- Tapping, Bossa, Technology and... Guitar!Chatting with Tosin Abasi
Hey guys!
Back in July, 2021 at John Petrucci's Guitar Camp, Tosin Abasi and I were chatting just before my master class . I thought the conversation was pretty cool so I decided to setup my phone on top of a chair 9 sorry about the audio/video quality) and filmed the whole thing.
Two guitar nerds talking about music : )
So here it is for you! Enjoy! Let me know what you think !

As a Megadeth fan, it's insane how over-qualified Kiko is for Megadeth.
Maybe, but remember that Chris brodreck too was an absolute beast
@@hrhr2466 kiko makes Chris look like Helen Keller. He is very 1 trick. Kiko can literally play anything and level with any style out there.
@@kevincomellas4908 seriously. Broderick is sloppy as hell, I remember being impressed by him when I was like 15 but re-watching his stuff now it's kinda embarrassing.
I concur
@@anomalyLG GUTHRIE GOVAN , THE NUMBER ONE OF THE WORLD

Kiko really needs his own regular show interviewing and jamming with other guitarists like this. To have two amazing guitarists sit down and talk about music is some amazing content.
I would fancy an episode of two or three hours talking like this with guthrie govan
@@tomasvitale5366 up!
Concordo totalmente. Talvez = Kiko toca samba com gringos...
Indeed
Absolutely!
Every Tosin interview I've seen he's blowing the interviewer's mind. It's cool to see it the other way around.
Lol please! Mindless technical wank e r y
Kiko is a whole different beast 💯
Kiko is ahead of tosin in experience. Tosin is learning.
FR 💪😇
i never saw kiko so serious he wanted to make an statement
Kiko knowledge about music is insane, what a true professional of music. He just dissected everything Tosin played and told him more about what he played than Tosin knew about it himself... amazing
True
He’s a master
Kiko is savant shit.
dude he;s literally like the best guitarist..damn Kiko is more amazing than i already knew..damn, go brazil eh ha
That's an accurate comment.
So many EVIL chords in this video muhahaha
Can you dissect some of these in a future video please? 🙂

It’s comical how many people in US don’t know Kiko’s jazz and Latin music background (referring to general fans) He’s so great because he embraces all genre. It’s not metal to reject clean sound.
Even if you listen to Angra, you get the latin influence from time to time
Kiko Identifies Tosin’s True Love for Bossa That No One Before Ever Noticed: A Documentary
To impress tosin shows how insane kiko is. You can tell his classically trained too.
Kiko's musicality is truly outstanding. No matter if it's a super technical part or just some chords, there's always an uplifting sense of flow, melody and feel to his playing. Very interesting chat, by the way. Tosin is amazingly talented and Kiko's communication style here sounded a bit like a Coach/Counselor talk. Very nice! 👏👍🤩
@@fondfarewell2 I think that everyone can learn something from someone else. But anyway I was referring to Kiko's chatting style. It sounded like a typical counselor style 😊
@@fondfarewell2 For reasons I can't explain I'm not a fan of Tosin's playing, On 2nd thought it's his band I don't care for
@@fondfarewell2 No player has reached the point they cannot learn something new.
@@prs149 he's sloppy
I think Tosin is a generational talent , but he is the type of player that still feel a bit nervous when improvising. That its the one area he can exchange knowledge with more experienced guys.
My life would be 100 times better... if I had a friend like Kiko.
you do. hes right here. what more do you expect from friends?
So would your guitar playing
@@calvinfreeman2112 LOL... agreed!
The world would be better off if we all had a friend like Kiko.
mas de vez em quando ele é meio azedo

*after playing... ALL THAT*
tosin: so do you read music?
kiko: eh, a little bit
One thing I really like about Kiko is he never keep secrets all of his practice technique and he's such a humble person with his big talent
I like how humble Is Tosin as he shows respect to Kiko, to His experience and knowledge... It shows a lot from him... Makes him a very good person and a very professional guitar plauer... To me, it Is still unbeliavable the fact that i was able to meet them and appreciate their clinics... 👏
Thank you for speaking about Stanley Jordan. People have seemed to have forgotten his influence.
i’m a recent a now big fan of both Kiko and Tosin…. These guys are absolutely unreal on the guitar and definitely inspiring to someone who’s been playing for 30 years! Never ceases to amaze how much more i can learn
That’s a great attitude to have man I hope I’m like that too when I’m 30 years in
every day is a chance to learn and develop
that was what kiko wants to validate himself you interview and demonstrate your skills through out ??????
your attitude is better than 95% of these UA-cam comments
love em both as well
Thirty years‽ This seems a *fake* profile...... . :-/ _:-/_
Tosin's playing is very hypnotic and unique, but it sounds best in certain keys using the open strings. While Kiko is more of a schooled musician that can transpose in any key, a little more versatile, phenomenal hand coordination. But Tosin sounds like Tosin, which is special, since so many guitarist sound like other guitarist.
Kiko literally has the whole package. This guy can even do what the younger guys are doing for example like Ichika Nito. This is what makes Kiko so unique he's extremely versatile.
I've really become a big fan of Kiko, being a guitarist myself, and watching his awesome channel. Very informative and inspiring!
00:01 Heroes of Sand ❤️ , such a beautiful and melodic song I’ve ever heard.
I like how humble and down to earth these guys are. Even though they're masters of their craft they see themselves forever students of the instrument. Tosin's face looking so impressed and picking up a few things of Kiko's own style and his own countrys culture on music. Very inspiring for anyone who is trying to learn the guitar.
17:55 Agree. Age is also a factor: clearly Tosin respects Kiko as he knows he has tons of experience in many styles, and the fact that Kiko is older.
'Cause we're all students forever...music is a passion...
Wow. As a "guitarist?", I found this as informative as it was intimidating.
Caraca!

Heroes of Sand intro is so sick!!!
This is a musical goldmine.
I knew that Kiko is a great player but this level of KNOWLEDGE and UNDERSTANDING and ability to COMMUNICATE back to the OTHER person what they did and explore the options available... this is amazing!
totally bro
Thank You Kiko for playing the Samba and Bossanova and I appreciate you for inviting Tosin. I’m a fan of both of you guys. I grew up listening to Sergio Mendes, and Metal Music/Hard Rock both at the same time. I can resonate with this influence so deeply.
Just completely reassuredly astounds me Kiko's unlimited abilities are unmatched!!
This guy made tosin feel like a beginner
@@behindthen0thing lmao are you out of your fucking mind
@@ellipsoidi uuh no
Kiko has the magic of the Latino roots as Rudy Sarzo in the bass nobody play like them even though no Latino music players in the metal scene are monsters playing they never will have our pace and feeling when playing any instrument, we were born with that magic !!!
Turkish fans love you so much, Kiko! We can show you Turkish/Ottoman chord styles, you always welcome.🇹🇷🇧🇷
I'm really interested in knowing more about this. Do you have any recomendations for me to get in touch with Turkish/Ottoman harmony and voicing stuff?
@@luisrocha26 You can check out Selim Işık - The Message on UA-cam. It can give you some ideas of musicality of Ottoman on electro guitar. And by typing "Ottoman music style" you can get some gist of it. It is important to get as much as harmonies from all around the world to blend it in electro guitar and metal. Have a beautiful day.
That's a thing I crave for: Interesting harmony in rock/pop/metal. In everything!
I’ve studied depth psychology for around 25 years and I can see from this video that Kiko is inherently versed in that language. Pulling the idea of the morphing sphere was a good indicator. Metal isn’t as -blockhead as some might think, that’s one of the things I love about it, total sleeper ready to race.
You should totally make some videos talking about music! I’d love to watch it
@@Livvidicus that’s a fantastic idea and the second time I’ve heard it. Seems legit 😁
But 90% of metal head are blockhead, they don't even want to play CMaj7 or any simple jazz chords
Tosin is the type of player that you listen to when you feel that you are good at guitar....Just to humble yourself
Some of the bits that were played reminded me of Opeth.
Marvellous! This is why I say Kiko is the best guitar player that Megadeth have ever had
So basically the best part of the camp was happening in the backstage. Happy that you share it with us. More of that kind of content would be much appreciated.
Kiko, você podia fazer um disco de MPB, mas todo rock! Seria bem interessante! Toninho Horta iria ao delírio, assim como nós também vamos com ele, sempre!
tem o universo inverso né, já dá um gosto
Verdade! É ótimo!
Tocar umas Ana Carolina né
29:00 beautiful melodic harmony.
5:45 That’s not Villa-Lobos. That’s Registro (prelude) from Suite Venezolana by Antonio Lauro. Amazing music.
Exactly!
yes
Indeed!
Love both Lauro and Villa-Lobos. Gound it intetesting when Tosin said he would move a shape around to "change" the key-many Villa-lobos songs I learned looked so complicated on the page but then you realize its a single shape moved all around the fretboard. Great stuff in this video!!
whoo thank you so much, been a lot into classical guitar later and definetely checking this out
27:58, when Tosin said he's gonna steal that, I knew he was gonna say it lol, that syncopated rhythm is so in his taste, amazing talk!
damn that tapping sequence at the beginning is beautiful
@BRENO SILVA CHAGAS thank you!
I’m going to say it: this was one of the most fascinating explanations of Brazilian guitar and music theory I have ever seen in context to using decades old techniques and incorporating it into modern guitar playing! Kiko was the teacher in this case and Tosin the student. I could see Tosin’s mind expanding with the infinite possibilities he could take from this. Wow, nearly an hour of pure unadulterated insight!
Two virtuosos from different generations talking about their knowledge. I have no words to express how rich this is!
I love Tosin, have seen him live multiple times. He really is watching a different movie than the rest of us when it comes to playing guitar.
Kiko, what a great birthday present this is. This one is filled up with so many flavours, I can unpack it a few times. I will learn so mutch from it. Small reminder, also Jimi Hendrix birthday today. Greets from Belgium
Watching this all over again makes me realise that you Kiko and Tosin would be a mindblowing blend for a legendary album. This video is so huh 8'D
Boa tarde, Kiko!

I really can't stand the standard tapping cliches/playing, but the stuff Kiko plays here is something else and sounds very musical and really nice. 👌
Tosin's ability to play chords/arpeggios in unorthodox patterns is very inspirational. It almost sounds like bells or harpsichord 😮
Those Brazilian licks blew my mind, I wasn't expecting that from kiko, very underrated guitar player
Tosin and all of us are impressed by your knowledge and how you make simple concepts awesome when you play
Best video I have seen all year. It was as if I was sitting and watching 2 masters chat. Amazing bro! Thanks for sharing and more please!
Kiko playing these things on the guitar reminded me of some Brazilian artists like Hermeto Pascoal, Yamadu Costa, Villa Lobos, Tom Jobim, Michel Leme and we can imagine how much we have to absorb in music around the world.
I wish Tosin creates a samba song in his own style now. I think he really got inspired. Two humble beasts these two
Two absolute masters of their trades appreciating each others unique voicings .. truly doesn't get better than this.. .. Once again i am feeling inspired to kick ass and explore these new directions ... Cheers Guys
Im so glad Kiko mentioned Guinga.. such an underrated composer.
Animals as Leaders faz parte da minha "playlist oficial pra trabalhos da faculdade", e ver que o Tosin é tão gente boa assim, faz eu gostar ainda mais do som que ele faz. Obrigado Kiko!
That’s actually a great idea, I usually listen to classical guitar music but I bet Animals as Leaders would be good for college work too

I put a lot of work into pick hand legato runs rolling between both hands so I have much respect for the pinky development on that picking hand. Thank you for posting.
Kiko please put out more content like this. It was very enjoyable to see you and Tosin talking about advanced musical concepts, culture, and musical history.
Thank you🤟🏼
I would love to see Rick Graham, Igor Paspalj and Kiko talking like in this video; I believe and feel that they are the most complete guitarists in the world. I hope one day this wish will be fulfilled
I believe Tosin has become what I would call a Modern Classical Guitarist. I would love to hear an Album or EP of just his clean playing!
Tosin defined the harmonic sound of modern prog metal. It's good to see that Kiko highlighted this at the start, and tries to break down how Tosin approaches composing with such rich harmonic depth from his love for Jazz.
You guys should do a collab at some point! Cool to see both picking up ideas from each other while going mental on the fretboard!
He doesn't want to make tosin look bad and have all the scene kids cry
@@behindthen0thing what are u talking about? Tosin has been playing with petrucci and many others awesome guitarrist, and besides that if they colab they would make music not a competition

Kiko you are a legend an amazing musician and a colorful guitarist. Thank you for all your music and also your regular uploads.
That little classical sounding bit that Tosin played is actually a Venezuelan Walz song by Antonio Lauro. known as Suite venezolana, Registro
It's so cool to see the appreciation and interest you guys have for each other's work! This is wholesome!
Honestly one of the most interesting videos you've posted, getting into the mind of these great players is very cool to see and hear.
43:56 "Yeah it's almost af if, yeah..." I love Tosin LOL
Thank you for posting this, we need more conversations with tosin
Everytime Kiko says the word Pop, Tosin makes a face like "they wouldn't play that on my radios" it's so funny
I'm 20 min into this video and I've been introduced to so many new things my mind hurts...
So glad you recorded this, I’m going to check out those guys you mentioned.need more of that in my life.

Kiko, your wisdom is vast. It’s a pleasure to witness this.
Kiko knowledge and good taste are outstanding. Can't think of a more complete musician nowadays. Could watch 10h of those two geniuses talking.
This is GREAT on so many levels!!
this is so pure and refreshing.
Very much enjoyed this, learning the techniques, and hearing this discussion and history lesson. Thank you for sharing this moment with us like we are there observing! :)
I really appreciate that you brought up Schoenberg and atonal music. It's interesting when you start working with tone rows and atonality and realizing that keys matter much less than just the relationship between individual notes. Understanding for instance the sound and function of a minor scale is important, but not as important to me as understanding specifically what sound a minor 6th has and knowing that it's also a major 3rd depending on the context. Context is everything.
Nice shirt by the way, as someone who's a few different kinds of nerd I couldn't comment without bringing that up. lol
I could watch this a thousand times! Amazing!
That's was some of the most inspiring talk I've had in a looooooong time
Alexander Skriabin is a composer, who comes to my mind, when I hear the harmony and note structure of the piece played in the beginning. Check out Scriabin Mr. Absasi (if you read this 😊), could be a great source of inspriration.
Scriabin é foda memo!
Great chat and insights into your influences. Like Tosin, I was pretty amazed at the variety of music and knowledge you have, not just theoretical but actually incorporating it into examples and improvising.
You guys are like my two favorites. This is amazing.
