I should have mentioned that you can use any type of Trainer cards you don't have to specifically use the ones I showed in the video. Also, experiment with different deck builds by playing with friends and family to see what works and what doesn't. That is the fun in building your own deck. Hope you all enjoyed! 😃
I love your channel very helpful you explain things very well and you keep us watching
@@crystalcactuis.w That's awesome I'm happy you found it helpful!😁
How can i fit Stadium cards in my deck?
@@certifiedw__a-a--tcher You'll most likely want to switch them with a trainer card either an item or supporter
@@TrainerTim1 was not expecting you to reply that fast but thanks!
By far the clearest explanation of WHY you build a Pokemon deck a certain way. Not just the rules for building a deck.
Pro tip: if you use 1 type, maybe also add some normal types. You are able to attach any energy to normal types, energy likely being your chosen type. This gives you a wider range of cards, that can use the same energies. (Plus, if you find a Pokemon of another type that only needs colorless/any energy or the type your using for its attack, consider adding that Pokemon into your deck as well.)
this saved me as i didnt have enough fighting energy to get 18 so ima mix some normal in there so i can use other energys iv got thx
@@v-KingSlayer-v Glad I could help!
But why colorless type specifically? I guess you're thinking of Squawkabilly ex as a draw engine (not an attacker) and/or Bloodmoon Ursaluna ex (or Radiant Charizard) as a secondary attacker. Also, do you play Regidrago VStar and if so what dragon type companion do you think you'll include for Regidrago VStar? Alolan Exeggcutor ex SSP is seen in play for Toronto Regionals few days ago.
Five minutes in and I’m already convinced this is the best beginners guide to Pokémon deck building. I’m trying to get a couple simple decks built for my daughter who’s just starting out. I suppose it’s not so incredible how similar the process is to MTG. Anyway, thanks a ton.
That's awesome! I'm glad you found my video helpful 😁
thats cool :) hope shes better now
That’s because this IS the best beginners guide.
The only difference IMO would be too switch step 2 and 3. When I play mtg arena i would pick creature cards first, then pick enchantments, instants, sorcery, auras, and artifacts that best support my creatures. Like if i choose bloodthirsty aerialist, which gains plus 1/1when you gain life, I would use a card that gives it life link like shadow spear or an enchantment aura.
I used to build decks and play at home, I always wondered. If I have trainers from different sets, can I use them in the same deck if they both do the same thing? Like instead of 4 Hops you use 2 Hops and 2 Haus (sun and moon)? But obviously you can’t use 4 Hops and 4 Haus since they fill the same role and Draw 3 supporters.
Man! The simplicity of this videos just makes it great! No fuzz, just simple explanation for people who just want to play with their kids or family at home!
I'm glad you found it helpful!😁
I wanna include Max Revive, Super Potion, Full Heal, Evosoda, and Rare Candy in my deck.

I was 8 years old when I first started playing Pokémon TCG battles, and since then the game got bigger and better! Now I’m 22 and this video got me hyped to play again and start a fresh Pokémon card collection :)
That's great! Glad I could help the passion start again!
As someone who starts collecting and try to play again since teenage this video was really helpful and well explained. Maybe next video you can talk about building a deck with 2 type of energies. Thanks a lot and greetings from México
Happy to have helped! I can definitely make a more advanced deck building tutorial focused around two types. Thanks for the feedback!😁
I had tons of cards and never knew how to play. Now i want to play, I played yu hi oh a little as a kid and another game that I can’t remember the name of, but used 40 card decks.
Digimon ?
What an excellent video - clear and informative, and very helpful to this grandmother who is busy deck building a deck for each of her four grandchildren - aged from 5 to 9 - all of whom have just started to play TCG. Thank you.
That's amazing! Glad I could help! 😁
I’ve been a Pokémon video gamer since I was a kid but Yu-Gi-Oh started to bore me so I wanted to learn this TCG too lol I would recommend this video to all new and returning players!
Thanks so much! I appreciate it!😁
This is so helpful. Your explanation is crystal clear and easy to understand. I haven't play Pokemon TCG for more than a decade, and basically I still remember the system so I can hop into the game with starter or theme deck immediately but kinda forgot how to build a deck properly. I just back in the online game and also back to buy / collect the cards. Thank you for this.
You're welcome! I'm glad I could help!😁
I just wanted to say thank you. My 8 y.o. recently started playing PTCG and I am trying to learn how to play so I can play with him and share some special bonding time. I was struggling with other videos and this (and your other one about how to play) were the most informative I've seen! You've clearly spent a lot of time and effort into it, you're doing a great job at explaining it in an approachable way, and I'm grateful for that! Thanks!!!

Awesome video! I never knew how to play or build decks as a kid, and now, as a 30 year old im picking up the hobby again, and im loving it. Built my first deck today and played with a buddy, and we had a blast. Keep up the good work :)

As risk of repeating what others have said, this is a fantastic tutorial for beginners. Thanks for putting this together. We’d resigned ourselves to only buying theme decks but the tip about only using one energy type plus normal makes a lot of sense. Think I’m going to have another go at it.

Thank you so much, Tim. I've binge watched your videos on how to play and now deck building. this is such a good video. clear explanation and motivation for all rules. it also helps that my cousin gave me some of his cards and they were pretty much exactly the ones you use in this video haha, but either way it's a great video
Great to hear! Glad you found it helpful!
Thank you for the information. My son (7) got the game board and it came with 3 decks but nothing in the manual explained about the item cards like "switch" doesn't cost you any of the energy we just agreed it would be a free swap and called it "house rules". As we couldn't find anything about it. Now I'm off to watch your video on how to play the actual game so we can be more correct next game.
Yea it can be tricky to learn at first but I'm always glad to help!😁

Oh man in really studying pokemon with this video but only 2 questions can you play any type of energy on your deck? and also play any pokemon of any type? Because I have a normal and fire water electric and also rock so I'm a bit confused
Generally you only should put up to two pokemon types in your deck. Similarly only 2 energy types. However its easier to make a deck with 1 energy and 1 pokemon type since a lot of pokemon attacks require specific energy. However normal type pokemon can use energy of any type so they can be used in any deck. Hope this helps!😁
I had very similar intuitions as this when it comes to building a Pokemon deck. Thank you for explaining the reasons why. 🙏

What type is best with psychic? I want to add a second type to keep away from weakness issues but I read most competitive decks are mono/white
Fighting type would probably be your best bet since more often than not darkness will have a resistance to psychic but be weak to fighting.
Very well explained!! 😱 I had no idea of how to build a deck from scratch, until now 😎 thanks a lot dude 👍🏼
No problem! Happy to help! 😁

Can you go over 60 if you are just playing casually or is that an actual rule even outside of tournament play? Thank you. Very clear and easy to follow.
If you're playing casually with friends and family you can have over or under 60 cards. The 60 cards is a just a suggestion to make your deck balanced so you don't draw too many of one particular card. For example, you could have too many pokemon in your hand and not enough energy to attack. However, if you play others at a card shop (tournament or casual) everyone will use a 60 card deck.

Best video to teach on UA-cam that I've found so far! Subscribed ❤️ gonna show this to my son to teach him thanks!
Happy I could help! 😁
Hey question so I built a mono electric deck and then my son purposely built a fighting deck and destroyed me. So what should I do there? Add some other cards that aren’t electric? And also would this be a reason to not build mono decks because you leave yourself open to annihilation. I’m new to hobby so thanks for great videos.
Haha yea I'd suggest adding pokemon cards with a different type. There are pokemon that can use attacks for colorless energy. For example one of my favorites is Sudowoodo from the sword and shield base set. It can use both attacks with any color energy so it can be used in any deck. I hope this helps!😁
Also yes that can be a drawback for mono decks having a one sided battle.
Thank you so much! I'm new to Pokémon TCG and your videos have helped me a great deal! You're just the best! I bought Battle Academy box to guide me through the game, but I don't have anyone IRL to play with so I practice on my own and play online.

What about Pokémon tools?
Tool cards are attached to a specific pokemon and give them whatever the benefit on the card says. You can omly attach 1 tool card and you can't remove it from that pokemon unless the card says it can be removed.

Thanks. I made a deck with my 5year oldson, we ended up around where you suggested in terms of numbers of the different cards.
But, I found it more intuitive to let him pick a pokemon (mew) in the beginning and then I let that be the type we used. We then filled out the pokemons of the deck. When we found items and supporters, but some of the trainer cards we would not have picked if he had different pokemon.
Lastly we found energy 18 energy and filled out the deck.
