This bike was really good and it'd be fun to ride for a day....mmmm maybe I'll sell the 701 and buy this? ;) MotoJitsu.com for all my crap including a list of all the bikes I've had....so far.
KTM’s reliabilty is said to be not quite at par with Yamaha’s…
Another point in favor of the MT09.
My son decided last year to for it (Cyan Storm) and my 2020 SP has clocked 34000 kms without missing a beat - it runs better than ever and does not mind the occasional track day 😊
@SpeedLimitation
He is 19 and rides the A2 version limited to 48 hp for the first 2 years after the official practical test. Thereafter, he can take the test for the unlimited permit and at that point the engine can be opened up to 95 hp (which is still plenty for a lightweight rider).
Do you also have a son who is interested in getting his first motorbike?
@SpeedLimitation
I see - in CA you got the choice between coastal and canyon roads ☀️🏁
What is your current ride?
@SpeedLimitation
Cool! Sounds like a plan - enjoy 😎👍🏁
@SpeedLimitation
My recommendation if you also what to profit from training courses at the race track - the SP in combination with Bridgestone S22 rubber will have more reserves thanks to its premium suspension 😉🏁
"When it comes to performance, the best performance thing you could do is to look in the mirror and upgrade that person looking back at you, and not worry bout the bike so much"..
Always well said sir
🙌🏽🙌🏽
The CP3 is one of the most exciting motors to me with full exhaust and tune, the new XSR900 is nice as well and has cruise control. It's a beast down low to triple digits and feels more powerful than it really is with how it delivers it.
Two cylinders is thumpy.. three cylinders w/balance shaft is smooth to hi-rpm.. 4 cyl doesn't require a balance shaft, but makes a wide engine. I think 3 cylinder w/balance shaft is the Best of Both Worlds..
Or V4 theoretically might be even better.
I have been on Suzuki 650SV for 5 years and just bought a MT09, I was a little worried about handling the power but have found the transition very easy. Felt really confident on the MT09
I’ve been on my 01 sv650s for a summer but just want something new that I don’t have to work on. Have you found it to be too much? my sv is geared with a 14 T so it pulls hard in the first gear but doesn’t power wheelie.
Literally the upgrade I'm about to do! thanks for your comment 👍
I went from a hero 200cc to a Yamaha R1 In less than a year I can say they all the same, just gotta be very careful with your wrist and learn how to stop before you get to high speeds, the fastest I’ve been is 140 /150 so y’all be alright
As an owner of a 2022 mt09 gotta say folks this is one amazing bike
Got 21 SP ,
the more I ride, the more I like it
Every ride is a mind blasting.
I can't get enough of it for 2 years now.
Very agile, powerful, all day wheelie,
Using it every day,
Also done some loong trip's on it.
Did the brakes improve over time, mate?
how long the trips were?
@@test-ob7rq around 3k miles one trip. After i bought a comfort seat, was a good investment.
@@karaboc I agree the MT09 is a bike you don't get bored with. I found I get a sore butt after 100-150km but I picked up a lambs wool seat cover which should help.
HEY Mate !
Great review !!!! I'm 68 years of age and that's my ride in Australia !!! I had Mt 07 , then 2016 Mt09 and then was ready to step up ! thanks to you and the Fireman ! i ride after your tutorials ! As I'm too far away from any track days , but i do car park practice etc and it's so good what you guy's teach !
As I'm proof of your effort ! Cheers Guy's
I own the SP version, and I've tested the MT-10 and XSR900 (newest ones) and I prefer the 09 SP personally. The MT-10 has more power, but it is a significantly heavier feeling bike. The 09 feels so light, nimble and agile, it's fantastic to hoon around on, and it's also super comfortable and I can literally ride it all day without any discomfort. Put some bags on it and a screen on it and it can easily work for longer trips as well! That triple engine has so much character. Can't imagine a better bike for the money. The brakes on the Yamahas are good, it's just the stock pads that's really bad. Put some EBC's on there and you get far better bite and response. It's really sad that Yamaha cheapens out on the pads. But it's commonly known.
how does mt09 compare to XSR900? people say XSR feels more stable because of longer swingarm is that true?
@@alexk4804 The XSR900 might feel a tiny bit more stable doing sweeping turns than the MT-09. But at slower speeds, the MT-09 is far more stable to turn. I find leaning on the MT-09 far more stable and easier. I do have the MT-09 SP though, which has a significantly upgraded suspension. I've never ridden the standard MT-09.
@@neonix01 “significantly upgraded suspension”. 😂
The average rider won’t tell the difference between the base and SP, except the fact the SP model is more $.
The cruise control makes the SP desirable. But cc on a naked sportbike is a little dumb imo.
The all black base model is the best looking and best value motorcycle sold by any brand this day.
You stole my words
@@tg8150 Sounds like someone bought a base mt-09 and is trying to cope
2019 mt09 here. Been my absolute favorite bike I've ever owned. Yes fully adjustable. Hidden little screw.
I have the same bike, 2021 version, same color, love this bike!
FWIW, the brakes on mine are great, and after adjusting the suspension and the tire air pressures, it rides and handles like a dream.
Love mine. I wouldn’t change the suspension unless you really plan to track it. I’m a heavy guy and it works perfectly fine in the streets and hitting up a twisty mountain road. The brakes are mid but they get the job done. I’ve had to rely on them to save my butt a couple times. I think better pads would help on the street and definitely need to upgrade to steel braided for the track. I could be wrong but I don’t think the SP even comes with steel braided lines. I wouldn’t get the SP for the track either. I’d either get the base and upgrade it or go with the Street Triple RS if you’re still looking for a bike. The SP imo is a $1700 cruise control upgrade. I’d rather spend that difference on rcs master cylinder, steel braided lines, pads, custom front springs and rear shock. Then it’s built around you and not built for everyone
That has been on my list since its redesign. I LOVE it! If i ever get one, im hoping for the SP version. And YES, you should buy it!
Very nice bike. I own an xsr900 and it is a blast to ride. Light, nimble and plenty of power. Makes me smile just thinking about it.
I didnt get the all black model due to my daily commute at 3am (with freeway riding), but I really liked the all black look otherwise.
I was really between the MT09 and the XSR 900 also but don't regret my choice at all!
Great review!
mt 09 is simply jack of all trades.. awesome
I bought this exact bike last week. It rides like a dream, and looks amazing too.😍
+ I’m 6’2” & 100kg
Thank you so much for all your hard work and everything you do for us) I would really like to see you compare this bike to a new Triumph street triple R and your overall thought on it, thanks again and good luck!
I ride the model before as an SP and rode the S1000r and it really feels not like 115 PS but more like 140-150! And the pull is better in the middle and even lower revs. I enjoy my MT09 more than I did on the bmw S1000r. Wouldn’t switch at the moment from the 3 to the 4 cylinder bikes. Except maybe the aprilia Tuono v4 Factory
I watched this video last night because I'd booked a test ride yesterday for today. Agree with the positive points, it is a great bike. But I did not find the same problem with the brakes: From the first millimetre of squeeze they were big-time-bitey-bitey-stoppy-stoppy (that's a technical term).
As a bike, it was love at first ride. It has a depth of greatness unassumed that no other has. It is at first ride as good as you are. Or no. Or am...
It's quick. It can do slow.
It's not super zoom.
It's super quick.
If getting there, (to velocity), were the fun; this is the most rambunctious answer to riders ever.
It's perfect as it is. '22 and '23 are the best bikes of a lot of years.
Nice little review, just did a Yamaha test ride event last Saturday. Only allowed two bikes a day so a T7 was first ( been trying to find one for a year ), very nimble and fun to ride. Next I wanted to ride the MT 09 ( love the three cyl sound ), but realized when would I ever be able to try an MT 10 again ? So that was the machine, I really liked the way the gear indicator displayed on the screen, the way it slid from side to side while changing gears was nice. Didn't really notice mushy brakes, what I did notice was the sensation of what appeared to be a gorilla trying to rip my arms out of their sockets... Hole E FUCK, that was a powerful bike. 😳
I upgraded my 2020 SP (by now 182,7 kgs wet) to braided brake lines and added better pads “track / road” - now I can “attack“ at the race track (track day) und have no issues whatsoever up and down some of the most demanding mountain passes in Europe 😎🏁🏁
And yes, the S22 rubber is an excellent match for the bike…
What brake pads are you using?
@@ndthien
SBS RST 634😉🏁
FYI, the rear shock is preload & rebound dampening, not compression. Just bought one this weekend and was reading through the manual trying to get my suspension setup. :)
Awesome bike. I just traded my 19 R3 on a 18 XSR 900 and I couldn't be happier. That bike is a beast and it handles so dang good. It's still taking me a little while to get used to the upright seating position. Plus it is a tall bike... I am 5'6 and can only tip toe with one foot down. I accidentally dropped it at my storage unit trying to make a slow turn. I can't remember much, but I think I had the handlebars pressed all the way left and it started falling when I tried to put it in gear. Luckily it has the front frame sliders but it still scratched the bottom of the engine case a little bit.
If u can only tip toe with one foot then u need to lower the bike. Fuk those who say don't lower the bike. It's simply not safe, especially if u commute on the bike.
I have the same bike, i have had it for 2 years now and i am still not planning to swap it for another bike.
@Paul H I'm short. Pretty much every bike, I can only tip toe on one foot. It's not a problem.
@amococ2487 how short are you and what bike do u ride
@@paulh6101 5'6" and only 28" inseam. I've got a 2017 Suzuki SV650 at the mo
I miss my 21 mt09sp, but my next bike will either be the new XSR900, or the R9 (fingers crossed that that happens)
Great review. I’ve got the ‘22 model and love it. :-)
Great video en good information especially regarding the adjustable feet pads. I´m 6´3 / 6´4 and looking for my first naked bike. The mt 07 is too small for me. I hope the mt 09 fits me better
Well this video covered EVERYTHING !! Subscribed 👌🏽👌🏽
thanks!
An up-close look at the dash under good lighting would have been awesome
hi, just out of curiosity, of all the bikes you have ridden (which is a LOT), what is the most fun bike in your opinion?
hi! based on your experience with this bike and the suzuki gsx s1000, which quickshifter is smoother? this or the one installed on the gsx s1000?
Hi, I've been daily riding an Indian Scout Bobber for the past few years, kind of thinking about getting a second bike for something different. I really like these MT-09s, but wonder if I wouldn't be happier with an MT-10. Never really ridden sport bikes before, what would your advice be?
What gear do you wear in this weather? I like the look of your gloves.
Not a pillion machine, the Tracer is the thing for that. Very comfy for the Mrs she said, and plenty of power when you need it to carry both of you out of corners safely and confidently..
It does sound good with a full system! 😜🤙🏻
Hey @MotoJitsu, nice review. Btw is it possible/do you have the time/ to make kinda general review on different types of bikes - sports, supersport, naked, heavy enduro, adv, etc and to kinda explain pros and cons of each of them? I see lots of guys, jumping direclty on gsxr1000/or smth simirlar/ and then things go terribly wrong, super fast.
Also, I have R1150GS, now I got R1200R - the naked "roadster", which is btw bmw naked bike. Can you make comparrison between those 2 ?
Regards, M.
How do you find it vs the gsxs1000?
Hi man! i have a 2023 Yamaha MT-09 SP it a beast! Nice videos keep up the good work!!! Hi from Romania!!!
I've got the same bike....unfortunately, I live in Northern California, and it's been too wet to ride it much. I've owned it for 6 months ,and only have 100 miles on it. I can't wait for the sun!
Totally agree, l couldn’t be happier with my decision to purchase one. I love my 2023 SP.

Jajaja I just bought an MT-09 last sunday; pretty fun and powerful
The brake fluid reservoir looks like it's about to fall off :D
I wanted the MT-09 sp so bad I went to buy and they sold it minutes before I got there so I bought the tracer 9 GT for the the same price . No regrets at all . Cp3 engines rock
Would you choose this over suzuki GSX s1000, since both are on the same price point?
I've got 33k on my 2019 mt 09 all black. Have you taken the "sp" for a rip.
Definitely go for the SP version if you can find one.
What is a quickshifter because I'm noticing you're not pulling in the clutch at all.
Bouta buy this as my first bike this weekend
Went from an R3 to a 2020 MT09, ridiculously fun bike. Not a fan of the new headlight though on these ones.
trying to decide this or the SP09 OR the MT10 it will be just for canyon duty cant decide money is not an issue unless it is to save money on non SP and use the money saved to upgrade standard suspension if that would be better?
If you get a chance could you try out the z900
Can you do a video on the riding differences between a scooter and a motorcycle ?
Got the XSR900 2023.. wondering if the MT has the Brembo master cylinder? You said the brakes were squishey.. but I think they're A- at worst,, What's the difference between the 2023 XSR and the MT? or am I full of it?? I'll admit, I'm pretty easy to impress!
Do you still have the 7? I must have missed if you got rid of it, and I don’t see much content where your actually on the 07
Great review, I test drove a ‘23 MT09 and the brakes were horrible, it was a dealer demo so the pads wearing in made no difference. Not a bike for guys 6 foot or taller. Throttle was really twitchy. Spend the extra and get the MT10 it’s so much nicer and better built, same mushy brakes but handles so smooth
Im 6'1" and I find my MT-09SP comfortable for my size. It does have a twitchy throttle which an ECU flash can really clean up. Coming from a 1st gen FZ09, its not nearly as twitchy as the old bike.
I just put a deposit on a 2023 Matte Raven Black MT09. Taking possession of it weekend of 4/28/23. One more week. I can't wait!
That’s my fav color. How’s the bike?
@MrFirstonraceday it's awesome! It's just about the perfect bike for me. I added the hyper pack from TST industries, some bar end mirrors, and the radiator guard. The comfort seat is finally available again through Yamaha. I just put one on. I highly recommend it. I bought another motorcycle as well, a 2023 Harley Davidson lowrider s. That's an awesome bike as well.
@@floridapatriot9776 sweet! I want that package for sure. My dealer has a brand new 2023 MT09 and MT09SP OTD price 9500 and 10500. Those prices are making the decision difficult regarding the 2024’s
Does it come standard with quickshifter?
I woulda got the black one if they had it. Endless up with the blue. It’s my first bike
I hate the wide ass gas tank on the MT09. It makes the bike look like it has the body of A cow if you look at it from the front.
Got the Tracer 9 gt with a full akrapovic. Insane sound! This motor is amazing.
Thinking this will be my next bike. I wish they offered better colors.
@@jordesign i have the red from last year. LOVE it. And I actually like this years new white with the gold wheels. In general, I can't stand the default yammy blue, silver, black. Bleeeh.
I wonder if the pads are to blame for the initial squishy feel. On my R1, stock calipers, stainless lines, and some metallic pads and the bite is really good. There’s gotta be an explanation for that so so brake feel
I am kinda torn. I have owned a 03 Sv1000s, a 03 cbr954rr and now I ride a 03 TL1000R. The smallest cc bike I have ridden daily was my uncles 1994 RF900R which was actually a 936cc with 135hp. The SV was the lowest horsepower one I have owned at 110 hp. I don't know if the MT09 would have the grunt that I enjoy or not. Right now I have my mind just about set on the new GSX S1000. The mt09 looks pretty sweet though and it is a little cheaper. I just don't want to be disappointed in power. I have been riding since I was 9 years old, I am now 35. I know my way around a bike.
Mt09/Tracer 9 are the sweetspots
I’m 16 been riding for 5 years and on my 3rd bike. Right now I have a 700lb Harley Street Bob w/a stage 2 kit. Hopefully I’ll get one of these MT-09 as my 4th bike within a few months 🙏🏼
Also ik abt the Yamaha brakes, they caused my first motorcycle accident
the bike is rarely the problem...it's 99% the rider.
@@MotoJitsu that time it was the bike. I had been riding for multiple years at the time of the wreck, I had an older bike and the drum brake caught while I was driving and locked the tire and I was going around a corner and I couldn’t save it
the brake randomly locked without you touching the brakes at all?
@@MotoJitsu yea it was investigated cuz they thought of foul play cuz I just broke up with my gf and she’s a lil cookoo. I wish I was joking
Great review
How do you like it compared to the Z900?
is the throttle issue still noticeable to the v3 mt 09?
I love my ‘22 Xsr900, I couldn’t deal with the mt09s looks😮
But the XSR is better with its comical seat/rear end styling? The MT overall looks better.
Would I fit on that bike with a 30’ inseam?
Just got mine in November... Way too quiet for my commute so I threw that SC Project exhaust on instantly lol... My new neighbors love me 🙄😂😂
Side note: Also my first bike 😬
Yamaha also provides MT 125cc and MT 155cc for European and Asia Pacific markets respectively...
do the aprilia rs660 next
Could a beginner handle this bike? I heard you can put it in a mode that will lessen the power and then one once one feels confident enough they can go back to normal settings.
Ever thought of renting bikes like ridersshare to take them out to the twisties?
Great review, great all round bike... Best bang for buck naked bike, well here in Australia anyways 👍👍👍I have '23 Sp 😍
Same here Robboh, Love my 23 SP. what a great bike for Australian roads. I’m 57, Yamaha Champ school online training is highly recommend.
Hey mate, same here(Oz-23sp). As per many videos, i replaced the stock front pads with EBC "HH" Sintered pads and the bite and feel is much better. Amazon was the go. AMX has them but a bit more cash. Well worth it. Essential upgrade i would say. I am 50 and got back into the sport. Great bike and happy to have the SP. Yes more cash but as an older bloke i could afford it. Cruise is now a must have. You cop alot of wind and that is fine, but engage cruise and it seems to magically drop by about half. Cant explain it but i guess you know what i mean. Quick shifter awesome and comfy too. CP3....well awesome too. Very happy with the bike. First ride two up last weekend and a quick wind up of the rear preload and the suspension was great with the misses on the back too. Ride safe as you can.👍
Rear is rebound and preload only. No compression. Front is fully adjustable.
got the 2022 MT-09 SP as my first bike. Since I'm not exactly young anymore, and of rather larger stature, midweights (MT-07, CB 650R) were a bit too small for me. The rider modes save it, since modes 3 (lower accel) and 4 (3 + with limited total power) made sure the bike won't tear itself from under me even when I twitch the throttle. Love it so far, though I'm eyeing the new Hornet and new Tracer 9 too
I own a 2022 MT-09 SP which I love. For a service I was given a Tracer to ride and was impressed. Smoother throttle and the screen which at reasonable speeds at least put me in a really nice air bubble. If you do long distance/touring the Tracer is easily the better bike.
I believe i saw a few races with an mt09 vs 765 street triple and the triumph won
Brilliant review
Please review the new KTM 1290 Superduke R.
good transition from drz400sm?
Which would be a better starter bike? 07 or 09?
I recently test rode the MT07 and the MT09. The MT07 is a great bike but the MT09 just wow. Definitely a very dangerous bike in the wrong hands.
I did get a brand new 2022 all black MT10 and wear all black gear and a carbon fibre lid with a limo smoke visor. I am the Batman.
Bike sounds great!
I’d like to see you ride a Honda CB650R.
I have one, it's a pretty squared away machine. Retains the purity of the MT-07 (i.e. cable throttle, etc.), but has much better suspension and brakes, and a good bit more power.
Bike feels planted in comparison (to me), I absolutely LOVE ripping through the countryside on her.
Why are the rider pegs referred to as "rear sets"?
I've heard this a lot, but don't understand.
Depends on where they’re placed. Super sports are the most rear set, with your feet near the rear wheel. This makes you lie forward, helmet on the dash and stomach on the tank.
Cruisers can be front set, so your feet are up and you’re sitting upright with your feet up, like on a couch.
Mid set adventure bikes have them in the middle so you can stand easily.
In this video he’s saying the pegs can be adjusted to move more to the rear, so you get more of a supersports position for track use.
I wanted to get this bike but i saw a ‘22 Z900 and that thing just looked 3x more attractive to me.. it felt and looked more like a proper bike. Although the MT has a more comfortable upright seating position, i bought the kawasaki instead.
I have a 23 SP that I love, but the mt09 often has some shortcomings that aren't present or talked about in this particular advertisement.
For tall people the seat is uncomfortable after a few hours because you start to slide forward into the low point and crush your nuts but that's an easy fix. Every sports bike I owned before with flatter seat this was way more comfortable. Upright does not automagically mean comfort. Seat shape = comfort. People seem to forget that and I don't understand why they forget it. Build up some core strength and your back will be fine leant forward on a sports bike. You cannot make crushed balls comfortable. There's a reason why one of yamaha's constantly sold out accessories for these it the "comfort seat".
For many bikes the gearbox is initially really rough and that flows onto the quick shifter being rough. It can take until the first service for that to improve but it does improve. I had a tracer rider tell me it took 5000k's for his to smooth out but mine is good after 2000.
It's a very noisy engine (rattles and whirrs) which can be disconcerting to someone listening for faults. You get used to it and there's nothing actually wrong. It's part of this engines character.
Well it does have the Triple straight cut clutch noise which some people don't like but still nothing like a old Ducati. You do get a fair bit of buzz through the pegs and bars which can become a issue touring. I recently ordered bar foam grip pads to go over the stock grips to lessen the buzz.
I think the soft brakes are just a Yamaha thing because at work there is a brother that rides a 125 but I am not fond of its brakes.
Thanks for the review I’m torn between this bike and the KTM Duke 890R. You should do a 890 R review if you get a chance!
No way i could support ktm.
Spite's Corner did a review of that bike if you're interested
The monotone black really masks the fugly aethetics...lol.
Great performing, 'value' proposition...fantastic motor...patent 'built to a price point' quality.
Very decent bike and I simply cannot get past the styling.
You could get the jvb-moto kit for this bike. Costs you an arm and a leg, but does make the bike look a lot better 👀
Very fun bike
you have to "mate" the breakpads. but nice bike I own the same bike :)
Hi brother, also possible for a starter? I’m looking for this one on 35kw
No
Would you recommend MT09 or the street Triple R? Im caught between the two. I hope Tirumph is as reliable as the yamaha though.
Triumph is not reliable at all. They’re built in Thailand. The MT is built in Japan, oozes quality and reliability.
Ok im getting jealous you riding so many cool bikes 😂😂
How does it compare to the Kawasaki Z900?
I wish they would update that stupid dash to the bigger dash that's on the MT 07 and MT 10.
Going to wait for the Zontes
Thoughts on street triple vs mt09?
Cost of ownership is night and day difference.
i hate it at frist.. then i buy it.. its masterpeice.. some cheap parts, but engine is great overall for that price best in class for sure
