You can spend there some time, but the city itself is quite boring honestly. It's beautiful when you look at it from afar and the top view is also great, but aside from that there is nothing to do there. There is a nice lake with stunning nature nearby tho(Borovoye). 2 of the best cities to visit imo are Almaty and Shymkent. Almaty is less picturesque as a city(arguably), but has a lot more activities, mountains and the infrastructure is better overall compared to Astana. Shymkent is more traditional and has a lot of historic places nearby, so if you want to know what kazakh means you probably go to Shymkent. All three of them represent different periods in a history of the country, for example Astana is from the collapse of USSR till now, Almaty is the USSR period, Shymkent is as I've mentioned very traditional and it has the least russian impact on a culture among three of them, so you can see it as "pre USSR" So overall, I can shortly describe it like this. Astana - beautiful soulless city. Almaty - the most "fun and interesting" city with the best nature(arguably). Shymkent - cultural and traditional centre.

The main reason for the underpopulation in Kazakhstan is, actually, the famine that happened in some regions of newly formed Soviet country in the early 1930s (which Kazakhstan was a part of) because of the extremely inadequate management of the Moscow. Kazakh and Ukrainian Soviet Republics have suffered that famine the most, losing almost half of their native population, about 3-4 million deaths in Ukraine, and about 1,5-2 millions in Kazakhstan. Adding the further loss of native population in Kazakhstan due to the forced migration to the East and South (about million), we can see that the current population of independent Kazakhstan could be >40-50 mln, instead of 18 mln

Astana, Kazakhstan is such a beutiful capital, would love to go there for holiday!
Yes come
I thought Nur-Sultan was the capital, you forced me to check and indeed Astana is the Capital!
"In September 2022, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed a constitutional amendment to revert to the name Astana."
All three of them represent different periods in a history of the country, for example Astana is from the collapse of USSR till now, Almaty is the USSR period, Shymkent is as I've mentioned very traditional and it has the least russian impact on a culture among three of them, so you can see it as "pre USSR"
So overall, I can shortly describe it like this.

Such low population has nothing to do with the land. Most of Kazakhstan is steppes and very much livable. The North-East alone could easily support tens of millions. The cause of such low population density is the Soviet genocide during the early 1930s. The Kazakh population was ultimately cut in half in a few years
