Generally well-detailed video. But I would add a couple of points: 1. “Strong” support for the preservation of the Union in Kazakhstan at the time should take into account the fact that often-marginalized native ethnic Kazakhs were far from constituting a majority in their own land (as a result of Moscow’s deliberate and targeted migration policies). There was a significant Russian population that were afraid of being cut off from Mother Russia (most of them left now). 2. At the time, Nazarbayev, the first secretary of Kazakh Communist Party, seeing the downfall of Eastern European dictators one by one, was terrified of losing power himself; so he saw the Union’s preservation as essential for him to cling to power. The referendum was not free and fair, so of course he would ensure the correct result. Guess what, the state narrative now is that he was at the forefront of the independence struggle. (P.S. By the way, it did work out well for him in the end: he was an insanely rich dictator ruling over the impoverished people, and the capital was named after him for a bit after he stepped down, though it's now back to Astana after the current government wants to move away from Nursultan). 3. The date of declaration of Independence is purely symbolic. Long before that, there had been no illusion about the continuation of the Union. Instead, it’s an homage to December 16, 1986, the start of the student protests (suppressed with massive, brutal force) that opposed Moscow’s replacement of the ethnic Kazakh Party leader by a Russian with no ties to the country.

The official Russian line is that by the time of its declaration on 8 December 1991, the Soviet Union had ceased to exist and that it was not seceding, but rather declaring an existing fact. Kazakhstan didn't purport to declare itself as independent, but rather signed the treaty creating the Commonwealth of Independent States, which similarly stated that the Soviet Union had ceased to exist. I tend to think that it was kinda symbolism. You know, on December 16 in 1986 there were a protests in Almaty. That day despite the fact, that protests were peaceful, a lot of civilians were massacred. And I believe that decision to secede exactly on December 16 was kind of act of respect for those, who sacrificed their lives 5 years before that
Yes, that's right. Day of independence was chosen as the anniversary of Zheltoksan events. Of course, if USSR was going to collapse in June or February nobody was going to wait till the 16th of December. However, everything gone so badly right before December, so why not to wait several days
Kazakhstan: “Russia could you help finance the Aral Sea restoration project since you destroyed it the first place and all?” Russia: “Not our problem you’ll have to take that up with the Soviet Union” Kazakhstan: “But we are the Soviet Union?” Russia: ”Exactly”
Same with Poland. Germany paid back for their invasion to Poland's governing institute, Moscow, which gladly spent money on themselves. Now as Poland became independent, they have no one to get to pay for the damage during ww2.
Actually it was the first to gain statehood and other territories still existed edit: thanks for 7 likes edit 2: you have *69* likes, it’s the number of years the Soviet Union existed
For symbolic reasons Kazakhstan waited until December 16 to declare its independence. It was the fifth anniversary of the zheltoqsan events. Like Belarus, they could have declared it 6 days before.

Do you know any good channels for learning about Mongolia and its history? I plan on moving there as an English teacher in the near future. 👍
@@ZeDawgearI don't really know about any channels about Mongolia, or to be exact, any channel that would provide accurate information. From my perspective, I would suggest you not to. Well, you might be able to live comfortably by Mongolian standards, get paid well by Mongolian standards if you get employed by a private institution like Absolute School of English, British School of Mongolia etc. By living in Mongolia, I mean living in Ulaanbaatar, really. Also you need to be aware of the climate. In winter, - 20 degrees Celsius is the norm, and in the summer, it is mostly dry(0 moisture in the air) reaching 35 degrees Celsius. About the people, you won't face like racism or sort of expulsion, as Mongolians are friendly towards foreigners. Most of the people will be able to speak English to some degree, especially the youth, and no one would expect you to speak much mongolian so you don't have to learn it. But the living standard here is poor, and you won't have much opportunity to grow personally. If you want to keep your previous lifestyle, it will likely cost much. I don't think you can save much money. Living here will be just "living", with not much to do else.
