btw, it's funny because there seems to be a deeper legal reason on why neither Sega nor SNK can re release Pocket Adventure, heck, they aren't even able to say it's name for some reason, as said by Ian Flynn on why the Sonic Encyclo-speed-ia didn't even mentioned it.

I've heard about this story too, or what I also heard about is that SEGA didn't have the money to keep the composer of Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 until Michael Jackson proposed creating the music for Sonic 3 since he already had games of his own on the Sega Genesis. (I never imagined a Touhou channel suddenly talking about Sonic haha)

funny to think that the one place you’ll find this is in a game released on a console most people have either never heard of until now or never owned
*classic obscure sonic facts, never change*

I’ve alway found the situation with Sonic 3’s music to be really interesting, Sega is clearly still allowed to use the ‘Jackson’ music in multiple rereleases of Sonic 3, however the music must’ve been produced with some kind of deal where Jackson’s team or whoever owns his music these days get royalties from each game/rerelease that uses the music. So with the original PC port, Origins and any other games Sega decided to just avoid that. Pure speculation on my part but seems to make sense to me

It reminds how one of the vocal samples from the Sonic 3 Jackson tracks actually got used in at least 1 Sonic Superstars track (forgot which, though).

Peak vid 🔥. One of my favorite pieces of odd Sonic trivia in general is Sonic Rush’s “Wrapped in Black” ost sampling Malcom X, such a cool fact although maybe not as obscure.

I was disappointed that I already knew the fact, but I'm still really happy someone actually talked about the Sonic Pocket Adventure OST! I really love the game's chiptune arrangements, something about the drums speak to me.

Not 100% relevant, but something I've practically never seen people mention in regards to the music licensing that I noticed - Michael Jackson died in 2009, and the last times Sonic 3 was rereleased with the music were the year after in 2010

Megapig is a Sonic fan?! :O
    Awesome! That’s cool!
As for suggestions about Sonic music related content, let me think…
You know any cool facts about the Sonic CD ost? I like how Metallic Madness bad future has some short lyrics of “You can do anything, so don’t even try.” In contrast to the opening lyrics that is “If you try, you can do anything.” Neat little poetic detail. Also some of the original recordings have unused portions.

A lot of the soundtrack is missing portions. In the original soundtrack these are brief drum interludes used to serve as a loop point, while the American soundtrack has entire sections missing which can be heard in the Album version of the games soundtrack (titled Sonic Boom), long sections too.

Great video, it's nice to see coverage of more obscure games and Sonic music matters! 😃
Not covered in this video, but definitely worth mentioning, is the fact that Mushroom Hill Zone: Act 1 uses a percussion beat with a strikingly similar structure to that of Sonic 3's Knuckles theme. That still intrigues me to this day, was it a deliberate nod or a stroke of coincidence? 🤔

Nice, I was a big fan of sonic, growing up, but I had no clue about this
I would love to see some tracks from Sonic Unleashed talked about

    I actually didn't know this!
If SEGA did rerelease Sonic Pocket Adventure, people would probably buy it. Sonic's still popular after all, and I'm sure there's more than a few people who'd wanna try a Sonic game they've never played before.
As far as the legality of the music snippet? Ehhhh who knows? It's a short drum loop that plays once for a few seconds. I don't know that the rights holders would even bother to pursue legal action for that. If they really wanted to play it safe, I suppose they could swap the song out for something else, or just mute the music for that cutscene.

0:50 more so, the earliest prototype
those tracks are more similar to the ones from the PC version than they are to the ones found in that nov 93' proto
3:17 i don't think you can copyright a drumbeat, can you?

Dreams Come True owns the rights to the OSTs for Sonic 1 and 2. There might be some leeway with the original recordings from the Genesis/Mega Drive but I’m not too sure about that. That’s why in some games (ex. Lego Dimensions), the zones from the OG zones get replacement music. From what I’ve heard: SEGA has to pay royalties whenever the music is used.
