That would be me! I freaking love Blue Sphere! And I intend to beat the whole game, plus the Sonic mania ones too. Not sure about Origins, can't get over how they ruined Sonic 3 music. Oh well. Go figure.
In theory, if you changed Sonic 1/2's serial number to Sonic 3's the Sonic 1/2 would either
1: Be broken
2: work with broken textures
3: Load Sonic & Knuckles
4: SEEEEEGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Sonic 2 works thanks to Sonic 2 and Knuckles, but as soon as you get into the prototypes, aside fron the earliest ones which had S1's serial number and Beta 7 (Which had its serial number corrupted for some reason, giving you a new Blue Spheres stage) the Sonic 2 and Knuckles will try to apply itself but the first few different pointers will throw it off and cause it to get stuck in a boot loop. (Redhotsonic already made a video testing the S2 prototypes's compatibility with S&K. None of them worked, although the noise it made when resetting gradually slowed down as the prototypes advanced, probably due to more of the patch being able to be applied before the game would reset.)
So no, forcing the S3 or S2 patch on the wrong game wouldn't work.

from what i understand compatibility with 1 was in the works but got axed early enough for nothing usable to remain, someone has recreated it but thats a modified rom so it doesnt really answer your question

There is. Theres a guy who posts 1 video a day of himself beating a special stage. Hes done it for a long time, I cant remember the person atm I dont watch it, I dont sub to them, I found it randomly and thought it was hilarious

When I was a tiny lad, I had the amazing idea of trying to finish all of blue spheres. I managed to get around level 50 and then rage quitted xD
I toyed with the idea too lol but after doing the math (~2 minutes per stage), I found out that it'll take me a few hundred years to beat them all soooo nope 😂
@@kirotalksyt Each stage has a code. Find the codes and split up groups of levels into manageable chunks. Give different youtubers different sets of levels to beat and record. Upload the videos into an in order playlist. If you get enough people to work on it, them eventually, maybe in a single lifetime we could collectively beat every stage and leave a record for people to marvel at for generations to come. A playlist with hundreds of years worth of content. To fully document all that blue spears has to offer.

I tried to do that too and got to around level 650 (mostly with perfect clears). Shortly after, I found out there were millions of stages, and I stopped haha

When I was a child, I always hated the blue sphere in Mega Collection, simply because I had no idea how to start the game. The title screen always catches my attention whenever I see it, and it really annoyed me because I didn't know how to start it, and I felt like the title screen was just taunting me because of it...

Seriously though, I think this is my favorite bonus stage. Having it as a "secret" minigame to handle incompatible carts linked to S&K was fun, and maybe good practice to get Chaos Emeralds. My cousin, ever the liar to gullible young me, told me that attaching Comix Zone let you play as Archie Sonic.

Well, SEGA does have the bragging rights of releasing the first ever commerical backwards compatible console. The Mark III (otherwise known as the Sega Master System outside of Japan) had backwards compatibility with Sega SG-1000 games. When it was brought over to the US though, they were marketed as budget titles. They were really ahead of their time back then.

Genesis is also backwards compatible with Master System games but it needs an adapter for cartridges.
Sega was always a pioneer. they just ended up taking too many new steps in wrong directions.

You can also play all the blue sphere games by plugging in Sonic Classics. It’s a compilation of Sonic 1, Sonic 2, and Dr Robotnik Mean Bean Machine. The reason is because the game is actually bigger then 2 megabytes. But the compilation has each game individual rom. Sonic 2 is the first rom on the cartridge, and it takes up half of the total compilation rom. Sonic and Knuckles reads only the second half of the room when a rom size is too big. But the next rom file after Sonic 2 is Sonic 1. So it see the Sonic 1 rom header. Basically, it recognizes it as Sonic 1.

The best part is if S&K read the first 2 MiB, it would play Knuckles in Sonic 2 just fine.
The only thing better would have been if you could switch banks to play either option.
I remember having Blue Spheres running on Sonic 1 for days as I tried to beat all the levels. Little did I know there were 134,217,728 levels at the time...
Technically there's only 128,016,000 levels but there are 268,435,455 stages.

@@SonicandHighwayDude401 I'm in the 200-300 range going by the level counter but that's including all the times I've gotten perfects, so I'd say it's probably closer to about 50 unique levels
@@yeahitsscott On my Channel, I've celebrated hitting 1,000 unique levels and 1,342 unique levels respectively. After that, I've lost count. I'd say I'm somewhat close to 2,000 unique levels. (I've been playing since 2019).

I once screwed up a science experiment using this game.
Back when I was a kid, some of my classmates were trying to prove that video games stress people out. They tested resting pulse, and pulse after playing for a while in order to prove their thesis.
I was the only one whose pulse was lower after playing a few levels than before. They had to retest me after my heart rate normalized to make sure they didn't mess up somewhere.

I'm sad that I'm only just learning that the "& Knuckles!" meme is actually real. A special cartridge adapter that modifies the original games? Incredible. Technology has come so far since then, with game mods having become so much more accessible.

Blue Sphere is one of the most game ever created. When the game said "It's Blue Sphere Time", it's really the moment ever. This game is just really.
3DS Generations also has Blue Sphere(s) based on the Heroes special stages- Surprisingly, it isn't with the touch screen like most other DS Family special stages.

I played blue spheres all of the time and loved it when I was younger. Lol that intro
I remember during my summer vacation, I took one humid night to binge on blue sphere after playing the other locked on carts to death. It was challenging and sometimes frustrating to get through levels. Upon playing so much i was thinking when is the last level. Now over 30 years i find out from this video. Really mind boggling stuff.

Actually, the Levels aren't randomly generated. There is a set equation for the 4 chunks on the map. And there are 128 Quadrants numbered 0-127. In fact, The Top Right is the only slot to feature all 128 Quadrants. The Bottom Right only features up to 127 Quadrants (0-126). The Top Left only features up to 126 Quadrants (0-125), and Bottom Left only features up to 125 Quadrants (0-124). Here are the Equations:

Not only does the Japanese manual call the spheres balls, but old prototype versions of Sonic 3 *also* say "Get the blue balls!"

An educated guess as to why it only looks at the last 2 MiB of the ROM:
It probably isn't so much something Sonic & Knuckles is doing as much as it's the result of how any ROM data is mapped in the Megadrive/Genesis hardware. A game that would be 4 MiB would have its first half mapped where Sonic & Knuckles is already. Since Sonic & Knuckles is the cart connected directly to the console, its own decoding hardware is only going to ensure that the first 2 megabytes is mapped to the main S&K ROM.
Basically, when the Megadrive/Genesis starts, whatever is at whatever address is whatever is at that address. Sonic & Knuckles' main ROM is connected to the first half of the section of the memory map reserved for the game ROM, and passes through the second half of the addresses to whatever ROM it's "hosting." S&K isn't "choosing" to only look at the second half, it's looking at the second half because that's literally the only half of the ROM space that's physically possible to read that isn't S&K when S&K is connected. As a result, a big game won't give a serial number or the highly secure TMSS signature, so it boots the S&K ROM without going down any of the alternate codepaths that lead to S3K, S2K, or Blue Sphere(s) being booted.
As to why S&K doesn't remap large games like it does with 2MB or less games, in the sense the start of the larger ROM isn't shifted down like other games are? Not sure. My guess is it might actually be doing just that, but there's only so much it can do about the other cart's own address decoder and how the "guest" ROM returns data. One would probably have to analyze the actual PCBs and not just the ROMs themselves.
Are you saying that the Sonic Team members did REALLY take the time to design and test more than 100 million of Blue Spheres stages during S3&K development??? That's crazy!! even for the period it was made!
Fun Fact: Blue Spheres are also present in the DS version of Sonic Colors. It's basically a more refined version of the special stages in Knuckles Chaotix. Unfortunately, it is also called Orbs in this version.
There is a game that has a completely randomly generated map every single time you play it. In Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World, the Gladsheim dungeon is a randomly generated, 10 floor nightmare with each floor being up to 64 rooms, 8 x 8 wide. The game randomly creates each floor as you progress on and it doesn't drop you off in the middle of the floor each time... oh heavens no. It can drop you off in any room that is not a corner or along the outer edge of each floor. This dungeon is so frustrating and challenging you need to DRAW a map for it EVERY TIME. What I found to work best is using graph paper with large squares to draw where your portals lead, in which direction with arrows and it should be 15 by 15 wide with you starting in the middle and turn the map 45 degrees. This way, no matter where the game sadistically drops you on a floor, you can always map out the 8 x 8 layout for that floor if you take your time and draw it out very very carefully.
also the reason why sonic 1 inst like sonic 2 with knuckles is because the color pallete with sonic and knuckles got kinda broken so they made that little game so that it just didnt get no way! without the blue spheres

If each level takes 2 minutes, the entire blue shpere game will take a whole 5.1 centeries to finish which is kinda crazy impossible to complete because that's 5 times longer than you can live the entire life

As a kid, i was obsessed with these special stages in the full game and wanted to play more. I played over 200 or 300 levels before i finally realized it was endless.
I've played 2,000 and I'm still going. I have an entire channel dedicated to the game.

I remember seeing somethinf about this some decade or two ago and really wanted to play it on my PC version of S3&K. It had some decent detailing about it, but never understood how to get it to happen. Thinking on it now, I'm sure the music would REALLY haunt me, especially if I would try to muscle my way through playing all of them..
tbh the blue sphere will better be name as blue spheres and blue sphere means only 1 sphere but blue spheres means a lots of spheres so blue spheres makes lot of sense
