Speaking of Reisen, one of my all time favorite touhou fan works is Mamange (Mama+Udonge) features Reisen and other characters' daily lives as mothers to various 2hus as well. It's really well written in a way that makes me feel like the author definitely has spent lots of time around kids, and it shows lots of adorable yet authentic. Definitely worth checking out for some wholesome family slice-of-life vibes!!
It's like 97% fueled by fanon and "it sounds cute lol" But I like Pairing Clownpiece, Junko, and Hecatia as a sorta family Hecatia and Clownpiece get some cute moments in the Manga, Junko/Clownpiece trip to ruin the moon together, and the 2 moms teaming up in the extra stage It's a bunch of small things and it's been awhile since I've played 15 but plz I just want Junko to have A happy ending lmao
The big thing about that one also is it’s very thematically relevant. I love the idea that Junko would be able to get a second chance of being a mother
Also the fact that Heactia is assisted by JUNKO and not Clownpiece in her boss fight makes me think that those two have a deeper connection than “Oh you want Chang’e dead? Me too! Let’s work together and make that desire come true!”
Of all the things I expected to see a cover of mine used in, a Touhou mother's day video was not one of them. This was a fun watch, thanks for using it!
About the Moriya's... i want to say that there's also the dialogues of suwako and sanae in UNL (Soku) where suwako says that kanako was being worried by sanae.
The thumbnail artist brought up the exact same scene lol. Not motherly, but I also really like the scene in 17.5 where Suwako and Kanako just casually talk about Yuuma
Happy to have my art used as a thumbnail (and in the video !!) again! Thought i would mention that Hisoutensoku also has some of my favourite examples of how much of a family the Moriyas are, these two lines specifically: Suwako: Since you dare to battle here in the underground where I hold a natural advantage, you've grown up a little too, haven't you, Sanae? Suwako: I felt that Kanako was getting worried. Thinking "Would she know the way back home?" and such. It's amazing to me how much the Moriyas consistently act like a family every time they show up. Honestly i could ramble on for a long time about how good all their interactions are and how deep their connection feels, but i feel like i can't keep leaving absurdly long comments on touhou videos lol
I get a sort of stepmother and child vibe between Reimu and Sumireko. Reimu went out of her way to stop Sumi from doing something that can't be undone and ends up making her a protege.
You forgot the best mom in touhou - Toyohime. Not only is she capable of actually keeping her child alive, she also hooked her son with sexy lunarian princess. Now thats a great mom.
And with that the Touhou community became racists themselves. After all, the Touhou community are hypocritically racist against Lunarians, and they love it.
Looking into mostly-fanon familial relationships (Ran and Chen, Hecatia/Junko and Clownpiece, etc.) might be a good idea for next year's Mother's Day, but ya didn't hear that from me, yeah?
It looks like we're getting close to the end of Lotus Eaters, and I'm waiting to see if my theory is right about Miyoi being Kasen's biological daughter. If I'm right, imagine how upside down things would be if or when the two characters finally reunite after goodness knows how long. Also, for all the times Yukari trolls Reimu, I'm certain Yukari sees herself as a mother figure in Reimu's life; just not necessarily a good one since Yukari lacks the know-how (a major point in her arc of the story I've been writing and revising for a year and a half now). Toward the end of Forbidden Scrollery, Yukari even admits to loving Reimu with the Japanese phrase "The moon is beautiful tonight," and we all know there are many types of love in the world. It's like Yukari and Kasen have separate approaches to parenting Reimu, and Okina is that crazy, self-absorbed aunt who leaves a puppy no one asks for but promptly take care of anyways.
There are actually a lot of Motherly relationships in Touhou though many tend to get ignored for the sake of fanon pairings. Moriya shrine is literally canon since Sanae is Suwako's descendant so Suwako is canonically one of her parents. Reisen herself is a daughterlike figure as you mentioned to Eirin and Kaguya but she is also an older sister and at times, motherly character to Tewi as well. Tewi tends to prank her a lot more since she knows Reisen will let her off a little more easier and the two get a long well even though Tewi likes to cause trouble for her. We also have Yukari, Ran, and Chen the latter of which is considered to be something of a daughter to Ran. Yukari is technically a mother figure to Ran as she does care for her but she is also pretty strict as she disciplines her quite often. Like Kasen, Yukari is also something of an indirect mother figure to Reimu as she often checks up on Reimu to make sure she is okay even though she usually does it to annoy her. We also have Alice who is very hospitable and a bit caring towards younger youkai like fairies and more notably, Medicine Melancholy. Medicine is a very young doll youkai who manipulates poison and rarely gets along with most people since she lacks social skills. However, one of ZUN's interviews revealed that she is canonically has a close relationship/friendship to Alice so it's safe to assume that the two have a mother-daughter relationship. Though it's unconfirmed, Shinki from the PC-98 Era might be Alice's mom. Some people also like to say that Letty is Cirno's mother figure from what we've seen, Letty could be entertaining that idea. Even though her interview makes is sound like she dislikes the fairy, in actuality, she never said anything about hating her and only told Aya that she is superior to the fairy and thus, shouldn't be compared to her. Surprisingly or rather unsuprisingly, Marisa and Reimu are often viewed as mother figures to fairies with many fairies being very open to Marisa and Reimu herself being a nice babysitter to many of them. We can see this with Cirno and the Three Fairies of LIght who are quite friendly and open to Marisa even though they pull pranks on her. The Three Fairies of Light and Clownpiece are also given quite a bit of care by Reimu who, despite punishing them for pranks, tends to look after their wellbeing and play with them when no one is around.(a smaller case would be her warning to Daiyousei about the incoming typhoon since it looked as if she were offering the little fairy shelter from the storm.) Speaking of Clownpiece, we have Hecatia whom many consider to be Clownpiece's guardian. Even though she punishes Clownpiece, it's clear that she's actually trying to help Clownpiece leave hell and start a new life in Gensokyo by ordering her to stay on the surface and forbidding her to return to hell. Even Eiki herself knows and acknowledges this. A more obscure mother figure would be Yuuka. Canonically, Yuuka is a dangerous youkai that tends to tease others. She isn't sadistic and at times, really caring towards the people in her garden(provided they don't damage her flowers). Since they are many fairies who play and live in her garden, she is usually the one that looks out for them the most and can be considered their mother figure. Lastly, (I'm sure we were all expecting this one) we have Remilia and Sakuya. Despite Sakuya's status as Remilia's maid(as well as the fact that she is younger than Remilia), she is often described as Remilia's babysitter and from their many depictions, she is quite motherly towards the young vampire. She can often be seen feeding Remilia at parties(in a manner similar to a mother and their child), buying items for her, and doing things to ensure that Remilia is alright. Sometimes, other characters refer to Sakuya as the vampire's babysitter instead of her maid because of how childish Remilia is and the amount of care and attention Sakuya gives her.
@@Shyguymask Oh yes. The thing is we can't be sure about who is the mother figure in that pairing because sometimes it's Youmu who acts like Yuyuko's parent while other times, it is Yuyuko who is Youmu's mother.
Gotta love parental bonds between characters. Never really gave much thought to Eirin being a mother to Reisen until now. Pretty interesting ngl. Feel bad for all the lunarian rabbits. . .if Reisen has this much trauma imagine what the rest are going through. Also IDK what canon says, Yukari is definetely a mom to Ran and Ran is definetely a mom to Chen. It's just too adorable not to make happen.
Funnily enough I think the Windows CD Dolls in Pseudo Paradise probably had the best connection between the two, with it being implied that Marisa resembles how Mima did when she was a kid
great video! only criticism is the pronounciation of "chang'e" and "omake" the pronunciations are "chang - wo" (approximately, chinese is a little hard to transcribe) and "o-ma-keh" respectively
I kinda like Yukari as Reimu's "Mother" more than Kasen, partly because how Kasen tried to "fix" Reimu made me kinda uncomfortable, also it feels like a large part of her reason for actually getting close to Reimu was so she could use her to exterminate her arm, so I like the ending because it leaves their relationship ambiguos after Reimu finds out. Which is also why I hate the epilogue, because it just tries to act like Kasen using Reimu like that was just something that can be brushed over so they can go back to the good times. Yukari on the other hand, Yukari understands how Reimu works from the start and doesn't try to change her, if she does want her to learn anything or improve, she knows how to do that. She also supports Reimu without her knowing by giving her donations.
I think it’s important to remember that Kasen grows massively over the course of WAHH. It’s certainly true that she was only getting close to Reimu initially because of her own goals, but this changes massively over the course of the story. She makes mistakes, especially early on when she doesn’t understand Reimu that well, but begins to both show genuine care and understanding as things progress. It would be nice to see her appear again (then again, I’m biased because she’s my favourite character), so we can see more of the true friend she turned into. Everything you’ve said about Yukari is also true, but we need to hold in mind that they’ve known each other for probably the entirety of Reimu’s life, whereas Kasen was just entering into the scene.
@@Set666Abominae She was still approaching Reimu by the end of it to get her to destroy her arm, she does indeed start to care about her, but not enough to actually tell her this by the end. I’d argue that’s part of the reason Tenshi and especially Komachi play such a big role in WAHH, because they both see through Kasen’s reputation and bring her down a peg. I also wouldn’t call how Kasen talks to Reimu in the epilogue blackmail. She can’t just let the arm (at this point not freshly-sealed) be paraded around, but Reimu had already made preparations for showing it with the kappa; her saying Reimu should lie about the arm being returned to the oni is clearly designed to save the latter face, as if the situation is out of her control. It’s the kappa who strong-arm (heh) Reimu into having the festival go ahead with a fake arm, and Reimu who then lies as well and gets caught out. The whole point of WAHH is Kasen’s growth from someone lost, trying to run from their past life and taking any desperate measure to do so (even at the expense of others), to a genuinely caring person who’s found new purpose, friends (and in regards to Reimu, arguably family) and sense of self. I think, and this is me speculating here, that the two most indicative panels in the epilogue are with Komachi and Marisa, the two people who know Kasen and Reimu the best: both when Kasen decides to go back to the shrine, and when she is starting to chastise Reimu again, the two people standing by both grinning like idiots are Komachi and Marisa, because they’ll be the ones who recognise how good it is these two are making amends (contrast with how Sanae and Youmu seem to just be egging on Kasen’s rant).
