I never realized until this performance that she sings loud enough to be heard over two saxes. I've been playing music and sometimes singing for 25 years, there are very few songs I can sing that loud, and they're all 'scream'-y grunge, etc. tunes, and I'm a baritone/tenor man and LOUD. That's awesome. I bet she can't use some mics, that's wild. And her articulation and dynamics are AWESOME.

I think most people are so used to their preferred genre of music, whether it be Pop, Rock, Rap, Jazz, Country, etc, that you can't be open minded to something different. I don't like all styles of music but I respect artists like this who can create something unique. I love this band, and hope they keep making more music. It's refreshing to here something different.

A few years back, Stewart Copeland (police fame) pack his gear and recorder and went to Africa in search of unique sounds for inspiration for his next album. The Lp starts off with a sample of one of the tribes he met. All I can say it was powerful to hear the complex rhythms built into the harmonies. Then he proceeded to make songs supposedly built on what he witnessed. My opinion is he missed the mark in trying too heavily to westernize what he witnessed. Garbus in tuneyards I think nails many of these ideas with her multi layering of her voice and simple rhythms and yet brings a modern multistyle mashing. Very creative

I'll answer the kid's questions. Yes, she who sings in this video is a woman, and yes, she is (in a way) trying to be black, as all of us who work in music have been trying to be since at least the 1920s, whether consciously or not. I dunno, it's a mixture of influences, but pop music wouldn't be jack without the black influence.
Saxophones sound nice. Rebellious harmony. For a free bassless mix, just neglect to use headphones.
