- On part 2 of this engine swap project, I'm going to get the donor engine running smoothly with some work on the carburetor, and then comes the fun part: getting it swapped into the John Deere zero turn and seeing if it will run! As with nearly all projects, we'll end up with some road blocks along the way...but with some good old American ingenuity we will improvise, adapt, and overcome!

Last time I checked engineers and common sense never the two shall meet, I can hear the laughter now, let's put that bolt there, they will have to take the whole z turn apart to replace, a ground wire.... Laugh laugh laugh, high 5, and sigh... LMAO

I have same 2007 mower and have had to remove engine to work because of orientation. That ground wire bolt is hard to get to. Try a thread on bolt. They do have problems with sump gasket leaks. From fellow Okie

Had the same mower since 2009 n mow about 7 acres with it , Replaced ALOT on the 2 engine and tons of carb kits for it but she is still kicking to this day! Trans/hydros never once gave me an issue Love this mower!
Nice! I did notice the transmissions seemed strong for having over 1,000 hours. But then I turned one of my bypass levers the wrong way and lost over a quart of fluid very quickly (engine was running). I put the bypass knob back in and filled it up with fluid, but it’s not as sensitive and quick anymore. I think the belt got fluid on it and is slipping…at least I hope that’s all it is!

Bad head gasket can cause that damage to manifold, seen it several times, save all old engines

Nice engine swap project. You overcame the starter, carb, and drive pulley height issues. One point I would have done differently is to orient the motor with the carb to the back end, instead of sideways. There seemed to be plenty of room for that, unless I missed a part where an exhaust was just easier to go sideways.

I agree the engine would be easier to work on if it was oriented like you say. However, since the mower wasn’t designed that way I’m not sure it would fit. I think it is crosswise in an effort to reduce the overall length, so changing it potentially would make it hang out the back. Also, I would have had to make new holes for it and then find a new belt length.
@@garagestory OK, yeah, you see more than me what the layout is like. I mean, if it was just a pivot/turn the belt could probably stay the same. Otherwise, I'm surprised there was only that orientation possible. Again, nice work!
Love this video..I got a project going and I can see that I will have a problem with the clutch being mounted so it won't move when the clutch is engaged... But thanks to your video...I know about the problem ahead of time...

There is a socket head screwdriver toolset with 7/16 tool you can buy at Tractor Supply it'll do the job in keeping you from overtightening those 4 nuts on briggs v twin carbs
Is does it only let you tighten to a specific torque? Or is it just easier to not over tighten since you have less leverage?
Yes you'll have less leverage on how much you torque them down. When they bottom out just tighten each one snug in a criss cross pattern and your good.
Great videos. I have a John Deer Z425 and I can find and oil leak on up around the head on the oil filter side. I replaced the head gasket and it didn't really look bad but the leak came back. It's a pretty good drip that looks worse than it is because the oil blows back on the muffler. Was hoping you may know of common leaks on these. The mower still runs great.
I don’t really know of any common leaks on these. The possible leak point I can think of are head gasket, valve cover gasket, fuel pump vacuum line (off of the valve cover), or maybe a cracked block. If your engine is worn, it could be building too much internal pressure and push oil out, possibly even through your new head gasket.

Awesome video. You certainly are doing some great work. I have a tripod coming for my iPhone and I am psyched to start filming everything I am doing.What part of the US are you in? It looks like Oklahoma or Nebraska .You are doing exactly what I am starting to do. I have been looking for a terramite for so long. I would love to find one with no engine or even with no hydraulic cylinders. Right now I am gearing up to convert a 1967 Allis Chalmers B-10 into a backhoe/front end loader because it will be similar and I have the Allis. If I had a power King then it would literally be a complete match. Thanks for sharing and I look forward to seeing the Toro being built as well.
That sounds like a cool makeover on the B-10! I think the biggest difference between that and the Terramite is the manual vs hydrostatic transmission. The hydrostatic is very convenient for loader work, but a manual will still get the job done and probably last longer.

What model exhaust pipes are you using ? I see that you swapped the exaust pipes and I'm doing the same on mines. My engine is also sitting sideways and needing the exhaust to fit my muffler..
I actually used the original pipes and muffler. I took them off the bad engine and put them on the replacement engine.
