You’d think that a function that is designed to prevent piracy, and thus only benefits the company, would avoid screwing over the consumer so as to avoid being completely self-defeating… Then again, very few companies seem to acknowledge that good business practices are more profitable in the long term, so perhaps nonsense like this is to be expected.

This is exactly why I’ve been against buying digital anything, as much as I’m all for everything being digital, I am not ok with these corporations conditioning everyone to be ok with renting vs owning things.
Somewhat unrelated, but I remember years ago when Apple and Disney had a licensing dispute and some people’s digital purchases in the cloud were removed during the dispute. I myself noticed all of my digital movies removed from my cloud, including Disney classics, marvel, etc. Apple and Disney came to an agreement relatively quickly and everything was resolved, but that’s when I realized we don’t anything we buy digitally, we’re just renting them. This is why I still support physical media, until something changes how digital media is handled, because this is not ok.

The only thing that will change how digital media works is the government offering the SAME consumer protection as they do with physical purchases. We know that won't happen. There are countries with BETTER and STRICTER laws governing digital purchases, but is very little protection here. It's the top reason why these companies are trying very hard to push an "all-digital" marketplace for games and movies in N.A..........so that they can keep your money, even if they remove the product you "purhased" 2 days after you bought it....making it unplayable. Then...only to re-list it, and force you to purchase it AGAIN.

DRM never works; it exists purely to placate shareholders/to have an excuse to point at pirates for failure of a product whenever it happens while still claiming they did all they could.
Many times it actively worsens the experience of a paying customer compared to those who cracked the game, even leading some to purchase a game legit and then install a cracked and/or pirated version anyways.
If you are spending literal millions on making your product worse when not stolen, you are wasting your money. That’s the baffling thing about game companies- they’re not only greedy, they’re incredibly dumb about being greedy!

Piracy started just because people didn't want to pay more for a legit copy, wanted to pay less for a pirated copy, then pay nothing for a downloaded copy, but piracy persists not because price, because the pirated copy is better than the original copy, and often because there's no legit copy to buy.

"I can't play games I bought and own." If you think this about digital games you are dead wrong. Read the user agreements, you do not own ANY digital games, movies, shows, books etc. What you paid for was access to that digital content and this access can be terminated at any time for any reason. The very best user agreements say they'll give you "reasonable" warning time that access will be terminated, such is the case with Elden Ring for example, but the vast majority don't say anything about giving you a warning if and when they choose to terminate access to the content. No there is no legal recourse, no one will be suing anyone because you, me, everyone, we all clicked "I agree" when we "bought" a digital game. Yes legally they could give you access for a single day and then terminate it. That's how shitty our consumer protections are and far we've let this go by not reading and understanding digital content user agreements and just making huge false assumptions that it's just like buying physical.

Or if the DRM is so crappy (and there are ones like that) that you don't actually need to do anything special from game to game. This is why once a DRM type was broken once in some game, the same DRM in other games will be broken within hours, even minutes.

Access is everything. Getting a Pirated copy of certain games isn't easy to do and requires an elevated level of use that most people don't want to do and will pay to supersede. The Dreamcast Pirating, Saturn Pirating, Sega CD Pirating are an overstated Issue. Sega failed in the console market because of the shear gravity of expense involved in the disjointedness between Sega America and Sega Japan. Releasing the Sega CD attachment then Sega Saturn then Sega 32X and to top it off they had an extreme amount of Prototypes for the Sega Dreamcast that just made their stay in the console market difficult. Sega lost all that money for doing stuff that had no association with the console. It does make devs feel safer when there is at least some DRM to stop people from playing illegitimated versions of their games or dumping the ROM but that has never been an issue outside of the lack of Copyright law and against bootlegging in certain countries, where pirated games were mass sold in shops, making it difficult to penetrate the market with legitimate games.

I find a list of Digital downloads just doesn't hold the same weight or feeling and to a collector, that feeling is a reason why most of us started collecting them. I realize "collecting" is not important to everyone and I respect that, but what IS important to everyone that enjoys games is having the ability to play them when you want to without restriction.

I love when I tell people why I buy physical still, and they push back on me SO HARD when I say digital only games are risky, exactly because of situations like this. A disc lasts decades. A digital copy lasts as long as Xbox *lets* you have it. Or Playstation, or who ever else does this kind of stuff.

@@COMMANDandConquer199 having games on disc resolves a lot of potential problems, but if that's the case here, then its even worse of a problem. They should be sued. And I don't say that often, but a physical xbox disc should work on any working Xbox console (assuming the generation of the disc and console match). Otherwise, xbox is failing to meet their end of the business arrangement.

    • @Wulfereene

Most disc's today only contain a launcher or Downloader. You won't have a playable version without initial downloads. And drm ist still included, if it is in, and still will fail. If the game needs a service that is down, it doesn't care if it comes from a disc. And more and more you are account bound. So no easy selling either.

Imagine a scenario where xbox network goes out for a long period like PSN did in 2011. No digital games for almost a month, even if they are single player only. I have been playing Hitman recently (a game that already has stupid online DRM attached to it). I was sporadically able to connect during the outage, but it was usually only after long periods when xbox servers were slightly less messed up. Most of the time, i wasnt able to play. Incredibly disappointing that this even happened in the first place, and shows the dangers of DRM to the playing and preservation of games.

I went out and grabbed fallout 4 and halo the MCC and neither one worked. Even offline.
