What I find hilarious about the "live service" fad, is that companies never seem to understand the logistical nature of what they are asking for. There are only so many ppl playing video games and even fewer playing specifically live service games. You can not expect to have 100 different live service games with healthy populations.... That just isn't feasible or realistic to expect. You would have to top other live services in order to pull their audience away from them and into YOUR live service.
So you better be damn sure you have a better game than the competition if you are even gonna fucking try. Otherwise just do not do live service..... Pretty fucking simple. Everybody out here trying to be GTA Online levels of successful when they make worse games than even that of Destiny 2, the most successful live service outside of GTA Online.
    Ridiculous....

No kidding. These companies are acting like they can replicate the initial runaway success of games like WoW without putting any actual effort into it.

    • @SmashBrotherX

Not only that but SE is basically cannibalizing their live-services. Babylon's Fall has to compete with FFXIV, Marvel's Avengers, Outriders, all also Square Enix's live services. Nobody will be able to keep up and waste money on every live service square enix puts out. So these services will eventually try to kill each other for a player base. Square Enix was insane trying to implement live services for every one of their games.

It's not always the publisher that makes the final decision for awful games that flop. A lot of the time it's just the developer's fault. Well yes and no, what battlepass do is gating contents and keep players in check.
However, in recent years, they become something like additional mini game or rewarding to those who have more time playing games.
Gaming already reach the general audiences and now they start to sink again into smaller groups. You have more selections of things to play. Single player games always has an end so those who want to spend only to play one product will need to find more environment for them.
We technically don’t see a lot of B2P one time games nowadays rather than something with dlcs. The tech is the same, only the contents are different. Hence the best games are the ones that live longer than having a short cycle and need to pump out often or ppl just bore and leave.
It’s interesting that online service games are better communicate than single player titles. You can hate that ppl are buying into those f2p with micro transaction games but they all have some points that it can roll big or small with a high risk than traditional gaming market demand.
Pretty much, if a single player title fail on launch. They might just get half of the way through for the next big thing (advertisement might work but not as you can get cheaper prices and stuff).
The only genre that should be a live service is mmo, which apparently with how social media work nowadays. I would take that a yes because you can technically play games on your fucking phones.
Video games aren’t restricted by platforms anymore but more of personal interests. Then gambling start to show up because it makes good profits.
Pretty much, I wouldn’t say that gaming is changing but more that ppl are getting old and have their own references of ways to play something. If UA-cam or Twitch start to ban ppl for X Y Z. Then you probably into the similar situation with modern gaming and the internet. Can’t trust any or take it as face value for every action you need to spend online for.

So how many more of these live service games need to fail until companies realize nobody actually wants them?

    • @mikoto7693
      @mikoto7693 2 роки тому +1

It’s actually worse than people not wanting them. There are only a finite number of gamers, and there are only a percentage of those players that are interested in live service games. And most of those people have already settled into one of the decent ones. Like with player numbers, people only have a certain amount of time they can invest into the heavy amounts of time live service games take.
Every time a new live service game is released it’s entering a market already heavily saturated. To release a live service game worse than FF14, WoW and a few others and expecting it to succeed is madness.

I'm not doubting everyone saying Babylon's Fall isn't fun, although I haven't played it. I am a little perplexed by all the "bad visual style" I keep hearing. I think it looks good visually. From screenshots, it does look like the graphics are a bit low on detail, but I think the environments and enemies have a really cool style.

I think a lot of gamers go into games like Postal to enjoy a level of stupidity that critics don't appreciate. I haven't played a Postal game since the original, but I think I know what's going on here. I had a game on Wii U called Devil's Third that got savaged by critics for: unoriginal, stupid story, bad graphics, ridiculous violence, objectifying women (apparently not noticing the men in the game were given the same treatment), seemingly aimed at a particularly juvenile mindset... Quite honestly, they weren't wrong, but I absolutely loved the game! It was basically, "Over the Top 80's Action Movie: The Game." A ridiculous murderfest were arms, legs and heads go flying 20 feet while streaming blood, twitching bodies, cheesy one liners, etc. And judging the posts on Nintendo's Miiverse, it seems most people that bought the game did enjoy it. But I suppose if you play games for a living, a game that revels in it's cliche tropes could just be tiring rather than hilarious.

One would expect SE's leadership to be in the position of shitting enough bricks to build a castle with this latest news. Coupled with the collapse of the NFT marketplace, investors have every right to be upset with the direction current leadership is steering the company in. I wouldn't be surprised if several high ranking executives are replaced for the good of the company.

Other than Nier: Automata, the games they develop don't bring in big bucks because they are based on IP's we don't expect to be made into videogames (like Legend of Korra and Transformers) or because how niche their specialty is (somehow hack-and-slash aren't as popular as one thinks of when Devil May Cry exists). I would not be surprised if a lot of people looked at the price tag and nope'd out of the store page.
