Given the awful direction Square Enix seems to be headed in, I'm glad these beloved IPs will no longer be under their control. Fingers crossed that Embracer will greenlight a Legacy of Kain project and do their newly acquired IPs justice.

An excellent point

Hang on a minute. So Square Enix, in its infinite wisdom, sold off DOZENS of well established IPs and THREE functional game studios, all for a measly $300 million that they're going to invest in sodding NFTs? Lolwut. Considering that a) NFTs have been near universally rejected by the gaming public and b) Steam, the largest platform for PC games by a country mile, doesn't even *allow* NFT games to be sold on their platform, I feel like Square Enix may have just tied its own noose. Ah well, the dumpster fire will be interesting to watch at least.
Its like pawning off the contents of your house to feed a crack habit
Not necessarily, it doesn't have to be embraced by the community to make a ton of money, ever heard of "whales" about gambling/microtranction/lootbox ? A few percent of players make most of the money in this kind of scenario so you only need a few players addicted to NFT's to make it viable
Also we know it's hated in the west but is this the same in Japan ? I mean they love their Pachinko's an Gatcha games over there so the reception to NFT might also be different
On PC Square Enix seem to have gone all in with the Epic Games Store.
Tim Sweeney is a vile psyxhopath and I imagine he’ll be all in on NFTs.
Yes, SquEnix sold 3 underperforming studios to invest their money in their JP studios (which have been doing much better), mobile games studios (more profit), and the Metaverse scam (I swear only investors are excited about Metaverse, can't defend that one).
Overall this decision makes a lot more sense than trying to keep investing in studios that deliver subpar experiences and profits.
@@candrian7 lol at least crack gets you high. All NFTs do is bring you dissapointment.
Oh I can’t wait for this to blow up in their faces. I’m just surprised that Square Enix did this before Electronic Arts did XD
Square Enix proved they are the better EA

Honestly, gotta love how in Squre Enix’s short-sighted greed just inadvertently opened up more competition and innovation in the gaming world. This is like a drugpin selling it’s high profile drug recipes to a rival for cookies.
Square Enix: "But those were damn good cookies."
Nobody wants NFTs but Square Enix thinks that they are the futuuuuuuuuuuuure! Ugh, companies are so out-of-touch. Video games are an art form! It takes heart and soul to make art. Art is never about the money. Art is about passion and creativity!
I can already feel the micro transactions about to seep into the MogStation for FFXIV to fund SE's insanity.
It's high profile recipes are all in 3 books, called Final Fantasy, Nier, and Kingdom Hearts.
@@Ukaran Still, it’s a really, realllllly dumb decision on Square Enix’s part. One doesn’t simply sell intellectual properties just to partake in a universally panned market like NFTs and *not* be an out-of-touch idiot.

This is just good news overall. Studios will still keep their lights running, old IPs have a chance to flourish, and the only people who end up losing are the decision makers who are all-in on the NFT money sink. Really, we should thank them for ensuring that the employees they've sold off don't need to worry about losing employment when Square Enix inevitably runs itself into the ground.
Couldn't have worded it better myself. As destressing of a news decision this is for them to make (things must be seriously wrong at their company with people being hired in to gut it for short term maximum profit from the top. I have seen it before), this is overall a good thing. All these franchises, some studios and employees have been saved from Square Enix's crazy impending disaster

Square has gone insane
You know what weird? The fact that they also sold the licenses for the games as well. Seems counterintuitive to want to invest in NFTs but get rid of the rights to produce some for games people would want them from
Well, when you're incompetent like Square Enix is, nothing is out of the question lol
They haven’t done anything with them in this long time so I want to re-hold hope for something to happen under someone else

Honestly we should thank square Enix! They're waving the red flags for everyone to see and are giving away beloved franchises instead of ruining them! truly an example of what these awful companies should do! :)
It's like wearing a "kick me" sign but on the front
Eidos was one of my favorite developers back when they were giving us really well optimized PC games like Tomb Raider and Deus Ex Human Revolution. It’s painful to see Square Enix, who have also made some of my favorite games, give these studios away to follow some stupid trend that will go nowhere and will tank their credibility.
Back in the day I used to get Square Enix games just for the optimization they had running on my potato PC. Time flies.
Man, Human Revolution was just short of being one of my favourite games, regenerating health killed it. With it stealth could only be incentivised by having one bullet of ammo on each enemies with less then ten bullets in a police armoury, the dev team went and made a massive billboard that tracks how much ammo each level has refused to look at the core mechanics. That, and the constant hacking minigame. The overuse of airducts and being a bit unwilling to challenge the player I can deal with but the hacking is omnipresent and ammo being too much at a premium for a "Terminator" build as a result killed the excitement too much.
Apparently it was made by a studio that was new to the genre, they actually did pretty well for a bunch of newbies, it probably explains why they were too afraid to challenge the player.
A decision they'll regret and will eventually bite them in the arse. Cant see a world where NFTs are integral to society, let alone beneficial to drive up the demand hence price.
welcome to capitalism, all we do is sell crap that's not integral to society
God help us if they ever succeeded in making them so...

The potential for this makes me happy. Love the soul reaver games. would be thrilled to finish the originally planned deus ex trilogy!
Same here! I really liked deus ex games (never played the original though). Square Enix was always not good in managing its western properties. Remaking some of the old games (like original deus ex, thief etc.) would be a hit but for some reason they didn't do it.
At the end it is a good thing this happened. Hoping for next deus ex game or a remake of the original!
Thank you YongYea, I've been looking for an all-in-one report that covers this story. I didn't realize how big Embracer is. Definitely was a smart move and little by little Square will be isolated from the gaming space and will consume itself in its greed. I've never played Legacy of Kain, but I know of it. Super excited of what's to come!

I sincerely cannot believe Square Enix sold Tomb Raider for NFTS
Who’s Tom Raider?
Poor Tom. He will be missed

At least now Square Enix will know how NFTs are a failing market.
Hell even Hitman is still going strong, but I guess they want that Activision style money that they will never get.
Me too. Tomb Raider has to be one of the most lucrative gaming IPs out there
Square Enix's perfect transparency in their lunacy is a gift to me. I've been laughing at people that misuse the term "cloud" for basically a decade, so seeing them lump cloud, AI, blockchain, NFTs, metaverse all into one forward-looking business strategy is beautifully poetic to me.
It's kind of sad in a way. It is like seeing a loved one or family member you love start to lose their mind over the years.

As someone who genuinely enjoys a lot of those "sold off" IPs, I definitely hope to see good things and resurgence in their brands. Deus Ex has always been a series that I've wanted to see more of and I'm glad to hear that the studio responsible for them has a new and hopefully better publisher backing them now.

A couple of things about the money side of things: I believe I noticed the $300M purchase was cash and debt free. Normally when a company is bought it comes with any debts the company has, so the net assets of the purchase is much lower than the amount the public hears about. So these studios are getting a fresh start that even new companies don't often get. Also, a cash purchase is rare. Usually payment includes things like stocks. Taking those two things into consideration, $300M is much higher than it sounds, though it's still much smaller than the $3B you mentioned ($3B US is $3000M US, for those who don't know).
Well considering how bad the treatment Square is giving to those classic IPs, i welcome the change. If you're not gonna do anything about those titles than sell them to those who cared. I'm still looking at you Konami, it's about time you let go those classic beloved IPs.

Seppuku (切腹, 'cutting [the] belly') “A grisly act typically involved stabbing oneself in the belly with a short sword, slicing open the stomach and then turning the blade upwards to ensure a fatal wound. Some practitioners of seppuku allowed themselves to die slowly, but they usually enlisted the help of a “kaishakunin,” or second, who would lop off their head with a katana as soon as they made their initial cut. The entire process was accompanied by great ceremony. Among other rituals, the doomed individual often drank sake and composed a short “death poem” before taking up the blade”

NFT’s not only speeds up the treatment of patients, but patients also gain quick access of testing results and through the blockchain, it would be instant the moment the information is available.
Even in the inevitable all digital future, NFT technology can save digital games and hence help preserve games a lot better than what they currently are by giving greater ownership back to consumers.

300 mil seems a steal for all those studios and IPs. And its not just what games they may make under embracer in the future- think about it- all those studios ALSO have multiple games that are well into development- halfway made or more, some probably nearly done! Embracer will get to release all those games that were largely made on Square-enix's dime lol!
That's so weird to explicitly state they're shifting their business towards catering to the minority of players that don't like anything about traditional games and are only interested in it as a job.
If that very specific audience even exists, they're gladly giving up all the money and customers they could have had.
(And games that rely on player contributions do exist and have been popular. They're making it out as if that's a totally separate thing)
I really really want to belive that Eidos Montreal now can do a proper Deus Ex. I really wish for it.

Hot take: This is ultimately a good thing. Square reminded me a lot of Capcom in the early 10s, during their “push for the west”. Ultimately they are better off focusing on their strength, great Japanese games. For those “high profile IPs”, none of them moved the needle the past years. Neither the TR nor DE reboots been financially successful and IPs like Thief or Soul Reaver are relics from the past at this point.
Well, companies should focus on making great games and then localize those games in every region where they don't have to make so many unneeded changes.
You forget that SE considers that 'financially successful' is selling 14 billion copies at least.
They're so beyond clueless it's funny.
That is what I've been saying since 5 years ago.
Square Enix is spreading themselves too thin when they try to appease Western market through Western IP and some of them fail.
Now it seems like SE these past 3 years try to give attention back to their Japanese IP.'s
I hope by selling Western studios off, SE can finally give 100% focus on their main Japanese IP's
It just sad that SE has to invest/mention on blockchain and ruin their reputation even more.
If Square Enix has PR team, they've been doing a terrible job.
I am playing their game "Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning" which is under Embracer Group subsidiary THQNordic and it's an amazing game. Definitely have over 100 hours into it and barely halfway done with the game.
God Square Enix has fallen, I know they've been terrible over the past few years especially with their live service titles, but good lord, the greed settling in, at least they sold the IP's unlike Konami.
That, and Square Enix has _one_ game: Final Fantasy XIV. Konami doesn't even have Penguin Adventure at this point. That's like saying the dump you took after eating sunflower seeds is better than no dump however.
They’ve made great games on their RPG line, but the business practices and live service crap is ridiculous
At this point, I'm starting to worry my logic of "Dragon Quest isn't going to be affected by any of this, because no one is that stupid and short-sighted" was a *severe* underestimation
Their behavior as of late makes me worried for the Nier series
You know... Komami is actually profiting from keeping their ips untouched.
This decision is just baffling. The fact that they are selling over 50+ ips and 3 fully functional studios for 300 million is so pathetic. Just remember Bungie was bought for 3.6 billion and all they have is a single studio and 1 ip really. 300 million for all of that is so pathetically small and I am wondering what was going through Squares mind.
Even Rare cost more, and that sale was 20 years ago!
It's crazy. It's a steal. if 34 million profit from tomb raider is bad then SE will never be happy. CD and ED are amazing devs , i hope they can go back to games they actually care about.
@@InFiniTosEntertainment and look how turns out. Of rare is gone and focused on live services bs
@Shinobi hell the only games they have made in the past couple years is marvel games and life is strange avengers sucked ass because the studio was told to fuck the players and to focus on microtransactions then when they asked for feed back on how the characters looked they said they aint gonna do shit. so by default no one bought guardians of the galaxy.
There's three big reasons why Bungie is worth 3.6 billion. They made Halo. Sony sucks at live service. Bungie doesn't suck at live service.
As someone who worked at Eidos on Rise and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, I think it's a good move for Eidos, SE Montreal and Crystal Dynamics.

Square Enix isn’t doubling down on its stupidity. It’s doubling, tripling, and QUADRUPLING down on it.
As fun as it is to laugh at nfts every time I see a company push for it, it scares the shit out of me. We’ve seen similar cycles when dlcs first came out in games, then micro transactions, loot boxes. Today’s laughing stock is tomorrow’s Konami business model.
Yeah, but unlike those, building a game that is fun in spite of NFTs seems basically impossible to me. Cause DLCs, microtransactions, and lootboxes were all really shitty, money-grubbing schemes but you at least got items or content relevant to the game out of them. In a game based around NFTs, all you would get is hyperlinks to JPEGs. Just like with Metaverse, it's literally something I can only see the 1% being interested in.
@@ManOutofTime913 Rich people tend to be very stupid
I am fine with DLC personally, at least you can choose to buy it or not and don’t have to pray and hope that you eventually get the gear or weapons it game that you wanted from the start. There are games where I have purchased DLC and greatly enjoyed them.
@@MrSpiritstealer DLC is usually just base game content that was put behind a paywall
@@Hauntaku Most DLC is costumes and skins or sometimes OP weapons and armor, which 15-20 years ago was stuff that was typically included with the game on release. DLC campaigns or expansion a la Fromsoft's games is the only kind I consider worth it. With this many IPs, I do hope Embracer Group actually starts putting out new games for them. So far the rereleases have been appreciated, but few, far between, and largely updates.
Mostly however I want a new Amalur game :/ Fatesworn was great but I can only imagine what a game in an updated engine that improved upon it would be like.
1) This is good for the companies they sold. Embracer is pretty cool. They are like Vivendi was back in the earlier days of Blizzard. They don't tend to interfere in game development and don't insist on microtransactions and crap, they just let their developers make games. 2) This is the final nail in the coffin for Square-Enix. I expect to see bankruptcy within a couple years. The entire company is being held together by FFXIV at this point. Eventually the CEO will force Yoshida to put NFT's in FFXIV, and that will be it for the company.
here is my opinion:
Square Enix, along with some other Japan's publisher/studio, have never been very good at maintaining international studios, some are probably unaware of how important these titles are outside of Japan, but the way they are determine, is only leaving me concern of the path they are taking, and it is a very thin line path, any wrong moves (like Kingdom Hearts NFT, FFXIV NFT, or rushing projects like FFXVI, Forspoken, and FFVII Remake Part 2) will likely make them fail, and the last thing I want is for Square Enix, to become the next Konami

Alot of publishers have the problem of having way too high expectations for a game (i.e. 'everything must start a new franchise that grows vastly forever') and as a result spend too much based on those expectations, and when the game inetivably do not meet their expectations, its viewed as 'underperforming' - no, you had the horse before the cart numb-nuts. Like when EA though they could turn deadspace into a multimedia empire rather than it being good niche horror series; there is no world where deadspace would be a mainstream empire, not everyone likes horror to being with, then add scifi, and so on - you have to correctly gauge audience size and put the resources relative to that, no just assume every game will be a massive hit.

I'm honestly torn about a potential Legacy of Kain revival; part of me really wants it (even a conclusion to the original games), but the other part knows it won't be the same game. Most of the voice actors are either dead or retired (Michael Bell who played Raziel is almost in his mid-eighties and Simon Templeman who played Kain is close to seventy) so the whole cast will likely be recast because it won't be great if one of these veteran actors dies in-between games because we know how long games take to make. Like by time they start and finish making the first game Bell could be 86/87 by the end of it and that'd likely be a Blood Omen remake which wouldn't necessarily need his voice.
for sure they will just have to rip off that band-aid and completely recast the voice actors from the get go. That's just how it is, there are plenty of other talented VAs that I'm sure could do a wonderful job voicing these characters. In pretty much all collaborative art you always have talent coming and going, it's the same in movies, TV, music, comics, you name it.
