    Blizzard spent 5 years creating the most sophisticated and manipulative monetization system ever made, and then in the final couple weeks of development they ported over some Diablo 3 assets and called it a day.

      @@zygo0 You'd be shocked at the insane amount of very carefully crafted psychological manipulation that goes into theses "games". You have to frustrate the player enough to want to buy the solution you offer but not enough that they quit entirely, you have to have several different types of currency to help obfuscate the real cost of micro-transactions to the player and most importantly you need to trick players into thinking they ever had a choice; that they're willingly spending their money and not just getting squeezed for every penny they're worth. There are literally dozens more of these tiny factors that need to be fine tuned to make a "good" monetization system.

    • @lucidd4103
      @lucidd4103 2 роки тому +17

      Exactly, remember the EA representative argument to defend this kind of monetization as promoting "creativity in the gaming industry", that's exactly the creativity she was talking about. The one about making the most abusive, and profitable monetization system possible, with the least effort from those companies like slapping the same assets and just rename their game.

      There was a comment I read here on youtube that went more into the model it looks like they're using here. The basis being an old genre of browser games with scantily clad women who really like lingerie.
      For this kind of grotesque level of investment depth to succeed, the player can't feel like their investment is ever wasted. So you probably won't see the power ceiling being risen and rendering old money you've spent obsolete, like you see them do in a Granblue Fantasy or Final Fantasy Brave Exvius.
      He explained it as a series of parallel progression schemes. So today it's gems. Tomorrow, it could be charms. After that, it'll be some other thing to make the numbers go up. And so on.
      I'm unfortunately not versed in that specific kind of game so I need to research it more..
      The one thing I'm absolutely sure they'll never do though: Make characters with stories and 3d models and voices and animations etc, that you can purchase. That costs money and effort, as opposed to selling a number to people. Effort is pure anathema to lazy lazy Blizzard..
      This seems like extraordinarily early-market kind of poo from twenty years ago. That they're only able to make viable because they're Blizzard. Everyone else has long moved on from this kind of thing, as competition thinned out the greed and consumers actually want something in exchange for their money. For example, Azur Lane's profit model literally is nothing but cosmetic outfits, and they want everyone to be able to generally get every character.
      The field is a series of games meant to be played over a long period of time, like an MMO. Normies are only meant to buy the $5 a month subscription plan. Only the desperate, addicted or wealthy can afford imbibing raw gacha currency; that product is literally drugs.
      .... not even the worst one would sell you a bunch of dumb numbers for $500,000 though...

If people actually go bankrupt over Diablo immortal i hope this leads to people demanding regulations on micro transactions in video games. If it happened with loot boxes it will happen with regular micro transactions. No one should go bankrupt over a video game.

    you know what you should do? try this with the simulator:
    write down what kind of 5 out of 5 gem you first get and go until you get 6 of that one kind of gem and see how much it cost you.
    the estimation is based on the idea that every gem gotten is one you need. so 500k is super low balling it.
    and even if you literally played forever if you don't spend money you can't awaken or resonate which ever needs the cash shop only item. meaning you literally can't max out as free to play.
    the only way to max out is if you pay money.
    and the only way to max out within your life time is to spend too much money on slot attempts.
    and if you want a bank account after playing you only get gems from the trade house which means in the end the best thing for a whale to do is wait for other whales to mine gems and pay next to nothing for it. no playing, just buying and selling.
    blizzard even solved the bot problem since you can't trade games gotten for free. meaning the only people mining for 5 out of 5 gems are real paying people and not bots.
    no longer is it pay to win. it is pay to try. because no one is winning, not even the whales anymore.

    - 6 legendary gems
    - Duplicates of those 6 gems to get them to rank 10, which opens up the extra slots per gem
    - 30 additional legendary gems (5 per each one of the original gems), all of them ranked 10, which opens up the resonating feature.

However, after seeing all of this, I have to wonder if someone behind the scenes was trying to prevent the release of this horror of a cash grab, because they knew it would be a PR nightmare for Activision Blizzard. Before Diablo Immoral, I just thought that I would simply boycott their games. I wrote a program to randomly check the values here, and had it test 10,000 times how many rolls were needed to get 6 desired gems. And for the 2 gem resonance that I saw listed I calculated you will take an average of 31,106 rolls to get all 6 pieces upgraded at ~$77,765.
    I also included the minimum and maximum number of rolls found in those 10,000 tests and recorded everywhere from 3406 rolls ($8515) to 147,394 rolls ($368,485).
    So if 5/5 gems are even more ridiculous and need FIVE 5/5 rank ten gems instead of 1 rank five of a specific 5 star (2/5 - 5/5) and another rank 10 of another specific 5 star (2/5 - 5/5), then that number is going to go up a LOT! Because that is essentially needing 30 new specific 5 star 5/5 gems or at least doing this 5 more times, meaning min would be $42,575 and max would be $1,842,425 on 10,000 similar trials.

    • @fmeraz37
      @fmeraz37 2 роки тому +1

      You have 6 slots in your armor, fill those with 6 gems.
      Each gem in itself has 5 slots, for a total of 30 slots. Altogether you have 36 gems to upgrade (6 slotted in armor + 30 slotted in gems).
      You need to rank 10 all 6 of your 5-star gems which all require exactly 73 copies of their respective gem, so 74 total (1 original + 73 copies, for 36 gems).
      36 gems each needing 73 copies amounts to 2,628 5-star gems.
      There are currently 9 DIFFERENT 5-star gems that exist in Diablo Immortal at the moment.
      Considering you can only MAIN 6 gems in each of your 6 armor pieces, you'll be going for 6 out of 9 possible gem buffs. This results in the 3 other possible 5-star gems in the 5-star pool going to waste (at least for the main 6), raising 438 (6 x 73) of the 2,628 gems you'll need to pull by 33% (up to 582) to our final tally of 2,772 due to some of the unwanted 5-star pulls getting in the way of the first set of six 5-stars you actually need.
      2772 5-star gems multiplied by the average of $15,000 dollars per gem will give us our grand bill of $41,580,000. Thank you for your patronage.

    • @fmeraz37
      @fmeraz37 2 роки тому +1

      For the math in ranking a single 5-star gem to rank 10:
      Rank 1 > 2 requires 50 gem power (real easy, just requires sacrificing 50 other useless 1-star gems)
      Rank 2 > 3 requires 75 gem power + 1 duplicate gem at Rank 1
      Rank 3 > 4 requires 100 gem power + 1 duplicate gem at Rank 1
      Rank 4 > 5 requires 1 duplicate gem at Rank 1 + 2 duplicate gems at Rank 3 (each of these two gems require 1 duplicate of themselves to reach Rank 3, for a total of 4)
      Rank 5 > 6 requires 3 duplicate gems at Rank 3
      Rank 6 > 7 requires 2 duplicate gems at Rank 3 + 1 duplicate gem at Rank 5 (this gem requires 7 duplicates to reach Rank 5, for a total of 8)
      Rank 7 > 8 requires 2 duplicate gems at Rank 3 + 1 duplicate gem at Rank 5
      Rank 8 > 9 requires 1 duplicate gem at Rank 3 + 2 duplicate gems at Rank 5
      Rank 9 > 10 requires 1 duplicate gem at Rank 3 + 2 duplicate gems at Rank 5
      1 (Original) + 0 (Rank 1 > 2) + 1 + 1 + 5 + 6 + 12 + 12 + 18 + 18 (Rank 9 > 10) = 74.

    At some point, you have to blame the customers as well. Because of them, these companies believe they can act out all of this greed because we kept allowing it.

      People spending thousands on the game to show how you have to spend thousands on the game. We’ve all figured it out now people can stop throwing money at it to have their own example of how bad it is. Blizzard evidently don’t and haven’t cared about customers or perception for years, they’re loving that streamers are spending thousands. People who weren’t going to spend money on the game wouldn’t have done it without streamers showing them how much they need to spend, and the people who were gonna dump money into it still are and aren’t put off.

    It was called Iron, Copper, Oil, Stone, and Uranium.
    They were all free, if I remember correctly.

      In a way they are doing a service to humanity by teaching the dumb and uneducated a valuable lesson about life while also stealing from rich scum. Granted, it will create a good deal of negatives as some people will be victimized and thus might turn to crime or suicide but thats not exactly something new for the greed based cultures we live in.

    if someone is crazy enough to spend that much on a video game.... well, those devs are genius plain and simple and they will keep doing it no matter how much people complain. Why would they stop?

    • @AlwaysANemesis
      @AlwaysANemesis 2 роки тому

      It isn't a matter of being "crazy enough" unfortunately; as someone who suffers from addictive tendencies, I can tell you that the entire point is to suppress the rational response. And people _can_ be extremely rational people, given the time to think out and chart their course of actions; that's why these gacha hells like Diablo Immortal are purpose-built to put immediate pressure on the player - you can have this _now_ but you only have a limited time, or you're being offered a _one-time only_ deal, so it's now or never. They prey on people who are hooked on the dopamine hit of instant gratification and number-go-up. These companies literally hire departments to research more manipulative practices, for fuck sake.

    the sad thing is the streamers who are playing it to "show how bad the monetization is" are the ones that have been helping feed Blizzard the money to make the game worth making, us gamers as a whole have already lost the war because of idiots like these keeping these companys in business. It's another step towards making this the norm.

    • @TyphinHoofbun
      @TyphinHoofbun 2 роки тому +2

      Not necessarily. One possible outcome is that enough people who would have spent money are dissuaded from even starting up the game that the $16k from one streamer is still a net loss. If the average person would've put $25 in to try it once, seen how little they got out of it and quit, and 640 of those people never play because of the streamer, it balances out. Out of the thousands and thousands of people seeing the streams and the resulting articles, there were almost definitely at least 640 people who would've been curious enough to give it a shot but decided against it.

    And this is before Season 2, where they add amulets for each gem slot that can hold five of these full awakened gems at once. And then nerf all the gems so you need to fill up all the amulets.
    And then a year later, Diablo Immortal Reborn, a new game with the exact same mechanics, but a cool new coat of paint, and new bosses (if you're lucky). Servers for the first game shut down at this point.
