    Kite Army, I was “was” a Toro owner and I was pissed about your review. Yesterday I went out and bought the Ego. 1st I bought the last years Ego model and then I returned it for the 2020 Ego. Both 2019 and 2020 were more fun to operate than the Toro. I did hit a few stones today and it sounded horrible compared to the Toro or a single blade mower. The Ego out performed Toro in almost every category! Battery life and recharge!!! Easier to turn and slightly quieter. The pacesetter function wasn’t as much fun as the Ego self propelled. Psychologically the feeling of your body slightly being pulled forward cutting grass may make you a little less fatigued. Sorry for Ever Doubting you Kite Army!!! A Thousand Pardons!!!

      Kite Army I can’t argue you took a lot of time to make this video for us so I thank you for that. Here is my thoughts on your points.
      1. Wheels you are correct the Ego wins. Shame on you Toro.
      2. 6.0ah battery compared to 7.5ah battery is not a huge difference as you state and for 150 dollars more seems like a rip off. Can’t argue about the rapid charging of the Ego being nice but some would argue trickle charging is better on the battery and promotes longer life even with lithium batteries.
      3. Cables being loose on the Toro being bad. Have you seen the posts on Ego lawnmowers having issues with wires breaking. Could it be because of the restrictive cable housing and sharper bends created from that housing when storing actually making the much looser cabling of the Toro near the mower better for folding and storing?
      4. Cut quality on UA-cam is almost always in favor of the Toro.
      5. Your deep grass test has the Toro making the first cut with deep grass on both sides which is harder on a mower and the Toro has a faster self-propelled system feeding more grass into the system not to mention an 1.5 inch larger cut. A better test would be to have both do the test with both sides full of grass.
      6. Personal preference but the LED lights are really strange and no one mows the lawn in the dark even with a quiet mower. The look of the Ego is like a cheap plastic looking child’s toy.
      I own a Honda so I am not a Toro fan boy and just doing a lot of research before I give up on gas😊

      I think the simple fact that you can self propel without using the blade is a very smart feature and makes the Toro look outdated in that regard.

    I bought the Ego 3rd gen mower and used it the same day. I Had one patch of grass to cut before the mower stopped because it overheated. Granted, I had the mower very low(set to 2), It was at night so I was running the LEDs the whole time, and the grass was somewhat damp. I barely used the self-propel because this thing is so damn light you don't need it. it stalled out maybe 4 times while cutting my lawn. I'd say it did pretty good considering I was driving it pretty hard.

    Pass by one of the Home Depot in Canada today to get a price adjustment on the EGO inverter as the price has dropped from $149 to $98 and decide to check out both lawnmowers. I do like the idea that the Toro has the hose connection build in; however, would not want it on a metal deck and wish that the EGO has it even though I just the Worx Hydroshot that takes 30s to clean up the plastic deck of the EGO with a water bucket. I found that the individual wheel adjustment leaver actually stick out quiet a bit which may hinder close cut when it is at lower setting on the Toro. When I try to pull the rear bag out I notice that it requires more effort to putt the Toro's bag out while bending over on my back through the opening between the handle due to the bag handle is placed at the entrance of the bag and cause the bag to fall backward (back heavy) once is dislodged from the mower while the EGO's bag is perfectly horizontally balanced (and is the same when the bag is fully full on my older 21" mower) at all time and effortlessly to lodge and dislodge once the handle is swim forward effortlessly with the spring loaded handle. Since I own the older 21" EGO I know how easy it is to dump the grass into the waste bag because it is always horizontally balanced and I can hold the waste bag open in one hand and dump the grass easily with the other hand by tilting it forward ; however, the Toro bag must use two hands (one on the handle and one on the bottom of the bag to dump grass into the waste bag because it is always back heavy. On a windy day it's going to be difficulty to keep the yard waste bag open without been blown away while try to empty the bag with two hands. I also realize that with white color bag on Toro it is going to show grass stain pretty quickly compared with the black EGO bag.
    I also was able to compare the Toro 600CFM with the (old) EGO 530CFM leaf blower and found that the plastic material on the Toro is like cheap and soft dollar store toy material and the part where two molds meets are not even complete sealed whereas the (old) EGO unit comes with hard strong plastic with the housing is fully sealed. I would not want to use the Toro unit to blow snow as I have been with my EGO 650CFM unit. The wet snow will definitely case a short circuit or worse, electrocution! No way the Toro would be a weather resistance unit... not with my life! I do like the front handle on the Toro unit that makes the handling easier ergonomically. EGO unit would need to flip side way to be able to be operated by two hands.
    I hope EGO will make a small >30" battery riding mower since the Zero-Turn is just too big for my need and a small riding mower will make it more fun to mower (and maybe with a spreader attachment!).

    I bought the 2021 Toro and am happy with it. Ego is great and you cant go wrong. Go for the Ego if battery life is more important or if you want a lighter mower. Also Ego may be better if you cant mow the grass as recimmended. Toro is heavier and will sit squarely on the grass if its too tall thus stalling more. Why did i choose toro?
    1. Steel Deck seems like it will still be here 10 years later.
    2. Personal pace. My 9 year old son is helping to mow whenever he needs $$. He can walk at his pace.
    3. I mow a 7000 sq ft lawn with one charge. I am planning to buy a second battery next season. If you dont plan to either buy a second battery in addituon to the 6 ah battery or getting the toro with the bigger battery, go for the ego. Batteries will decrease with time and the Ego has a bigger battery and charges quicker

    Always enjoy your reviews. I’ve been an EGO fanboy since I got my mower 3 years ago. I followed up with purchasing the blower, carbon fiber string trimmer, hedger, and 14” chainsaw. I have been doing lawn work for 30+ years, using all types and manufacturer’s equipment, and I can honestly saw that this line of equipment beats them all. So I recently upgraded the mower to the new Select Cut, because literally all of the little annoyances of my old EGO were resolved with the new SelectCut. At the time of my purchase I noticed the TORO model, and considered it for a moment, based solely on my experiences with gas TOROs I have used in the past. So I have been very eager to see a comparison, and you certainly put any of my doubts to rest that I made the right choice!
    As for my other EGO products, my only regret is not going with the multi-head option on the string trimmer, mainly due to EGO’s recent release of the power sweeper attachment, which I would love to have over the power load feature on the carbon fiber trimmer (which is very awesome in it’s own right, but something I only utilize maybe 2-3 times a season when I install a new line). The only product of there’s that I have found that now gets beat, is their chainsaw, by Milwaukee’s new 18v 16” chainsaw. Leave it to Milwaukee to find a way to beat the power of a 56V 7.5ah battery with a 18v 8.0ah battery...but I put them both to the test on a recent fallen tree in my yard, and there was no comparison. That being said, I have not tried out their newer 16” or 18” chainsaws. At the end of the day, EGO does not rest on it’s laurels, and keeps improving their products, while everyone else is playing catch-up to their older models.
    Thanks again for the review, and keep up the great work!

    I just returned my ego select cut. The run time we got out of it was 35 to 50 minutes. If you ever tried using the bag on the ego it sucks. The crossbar is right in the middle and makes it difficult to take the bag off and on. The reason we had to return it is because the ego would get hot in turn off. I lean more towards the toro for the fact that if grass is high you can put the Discharge chute on the side of the mower. Not the rear. Ego does have a better charger. But if you plan to use the ego for bagging you will notice real quick that it is not designed for that. Also the blades are thinner on the ego

      I believe the proper way for accessing the bag is by releasing the handle leaver and push the handle bar forward to have the full access of the bag. look forward to hearing your experience on the Toro once you used it. Since I only mulch this design done not effect me much. When I compared the EGO next to the TORO at HOME DEPOT I just can’t stand how cheap and flimsy TORO’s build quality is for them to ask for the higher price tag just because the brand name that has been around. To me it is a GM/Ford selling at Tesla’s pricing range and getting away with it. Only a few things I like about the design of the TORO: Big wheels (but they cheape on the ball bearing), shorter handle with no centre bar for easy bag access (but they cheap out on the handlebar material and release lever) and build in mulching flap (not sure how well it seals when compared with the insert type). First was the fact that I can bring the Toro in for repair at any Toro dealer. I read that the Ego could be in for repair for up to 6 weeks. Second was the fact that I can flush out the underside of the deck. My present Toro always has mulched grass jammed up under the deck. I really love the self propel function, its extremely intuitive. Very impressive. You walk faster and it goes faster, you stop and it stops, you slow down and it slows down. You don't have to give it any thought at all. I can't imagine having to adjust speeds with a throttle after using this. I also like the attachement for a water hose, makes it easy to clean. The battery takes a long time to charge. But after running it for 40 minutes and then another 15 with the Toro weed wacker battery I'm about to break for the day anyway. Seems well built and well thought out. I like battery much better than gas, I wear headphones and listen to podcast at a reasonable volume, this thing is very quiet.

    Finally picked mine (well the first of) up yesterday and after fully charging the battery I went straight to town... This thing hangs with the very best consumer gas mowers and it is most definitely king of electrics in terms of performance and design.
    In the interest of transparency, I did have to exchange my first one because it had a defect causing the rear right wheel to skip and bind during both SP and manual push modes. I removed the wheel and inspected the double gearing system and there were no signs of damage so I suspect the locking mechanism was defective and constantly engaging. My replacement works a charm!
    It feels very solid and the handle design is among the best I've seen. On a full charge, in extremely heavy grass and weeds (15"+ growth) it plowed through for 52 straight minutes with only 3 stalls in conditions that would have stalled any gas mower. I only used the SP a few times, though, knowing the grass was too heavy and the battery may have struggled a bit... Still, 52 minutes is not too shabby! I think I can easily get the claimed 60 minutes during yard maintenance cycles.
    I also picked up their redesigned trimmer with the PowerLoad feature and carbon fiber shaft. Haven't used it but it feels very comfortable and balanced. Will report back once I give it a go!

The Toro is strong and is holding up fine, but... it is a "loud" 100 lb beast. Also, I really don't like wearing ear protection and know I should. So electric here I come. What I really don't like about Toros, and still don't, is the 4 separate wheel height adjustments needed. I cut/mulch at 4" for a better look, especially when the yard is dry and off season. I bag, leaves, grass, etc. curbside and on sidewalks at 1." The up and down height adjustment is a pain! Also, the newest Toros still need a mulching plug (no slide adjustment) and don't have ball bearing wheels!!

    • @JeffreyHawkins
      @JeffreyHawkins 4 роки тому

      That would be fun to see, but no battery powered mower could come close to that. They aren't intended to. They are intended to be cleaner, lighter, easier, cheaper over the long run and lower maintenance. And of course, they have to do a fair to good job of mowing the lawn.
      The Honda HRX217VKA has a 201cc engine that puts out 4.1kW. If you do the math on the battery vs. run-time of the Ego (7.5Ah at 56V translates to 0.42kWh), we can determine that the Ego is using less than 0.38kW as it runs... Less than 1/10th the power of the Honda.
      There are all sorts of reasons to go with battery powered tools over gas-powered ones, depending on the use-case. But cutting cleaner and/or doing a better job are not two of them.

    I know you try to make these tests similar and fair, but I noticed you did not start the EGO in uncut grass but started in the cut section that the Toro had just completed. That made it so the EGO had about a 10 to 15% lower work load from the beginning. You over lapped the cut grass with the EGO making it easier to cut.
    I would like to see the same test done with the EGO going first and the Toro following. Cutting through a full deck of grass take a great deal more power even with gas mowers. I do think the 7.5 amp EGO battery has more power than the Toro 6.0 amp so the EGO should win the competition but I feel the Toro had the bigger disadvantage.

Its quite possible the cells of the larger pack are capable of higher sustained discharge. This would likely present as the voltage sagging on the pack and then the motor drawing higher current before stalling due to over-current protection, like where you went through the thick grass. It's possible here that the 7.5 Ah pack would stay at a high enough voltage that lower current could be drawn in this scenario and the mower wouldn't stall. How much of a difference this would have would need to be tested. The main takeaway though is that battery capacity can most certainly have an affect on output power and it cannot be assumed the 7.5 Ah pack would perform identically.

    With so many people and UA-cam reviewer praising about the ease of access to the catching bag of the TOTO and complaining about the EGO design I decided to try it on my 21 inch first generation lawnmower for the first time since I only mulch to enrich the grass and not my own visual pleasure and this is what I found:
    Of course it is difficult to access the bag from the top on the EGO because the bar is there however with one lever mechanism design on the handle bar I only need to press the leaves effortlessly and move the entire handlebar forward to have way wider access than bending my back to pickup a heavy fully loaded bag on the Toro unit that require the operator to operate through the handle bar( and potentially break their back!). I also realize the reason TORO has such design is because they are not willing to put in extra materials to rovide telescopic handle bar so it can be shorter in height when the lawnmower is in folded vertical position. Toro makes two small levers (plastic) to be turned before the operator is able to fold the handle bar which may not be operable when wearing gloves while EGO provides one nice spring loaded long handle to do the job effortlessly. This shows me who is thinking more about the consumer’s pocketbook and who is thinking more about the consumer’s health. I love how TORO continues to do reverse engineering on EGO products to find where they can cut corners while selling their products at higher price to their vast blind loyal followers into their financial slaughterhouse.

  • @cpftank09

    I feel like the EGO is a bit gimicky with the lights. Here are a few points I think that were missed.
    -Bag install/removal, very easy on the Toro, the EGO you have to go from underneath the handle, bending over more and likely spilling more clippings.
    -Thickness of the side of the deck being steel vs composite, IE how close it actually cuts around borders, fences, against walls, etc. I notice with my composite deck Honda HRX217 (looks similar wall thickness of the deck compared to the EGO) that I have to pay more attention to how trim around edges because it simply doesn't cut as close to the edges as my old Toro did.
    -By the looks of the mowers the shorter wheel base on the toro looks like an HUGE advantage for maneuverability. Ball bearings rust, plastic wheels don't. My old Lawn Boy and Toro had the type of wheels, they lasted a very long time and are likely considerably cheaper to replace when needed.
    -Also, how often does a person really adjust the height of their mower? I feel like the EGO system is more likely to break.
    To me it seems there is heavy bias to the EGO in this video. Especially when the comment was made towards the Toro about the deck being the same as the gas models. The mode of blade drive doesn't matter, the deck makes all the difference in suction, mulching and cut quality...which Toro has been the top tier for decades.

      The headlights are gimicky but most of the other features are useful. But if you like a barebones mower the Toro is for you - but they should price it at $300. BTW - I adjust my mower height all the time

      @cpftank09 4 роки тому

      Kite Army ummm, according to Home Depot the Toro is $100 cheaper than the EGO. I don’t know that a mower like that should be $300. Especially being made in the USA vs China..... IMO the ease of the bag install and removal is more of a benefit than the height adjustment. Also having a dealer network like toro does is another huge advantage. The deck is tried and true, class leading mulching and bagging.

      @@cpftank09 I hate to be the one to tell you this, but the mower says "made in PRC" all over it - not sure that is the USA. I didn't say that in the video because I didn't want to hurt any Toro fans feelings - but, we must face this truth....

      Kite Army interesting, I wonder why their site and others say it’s made in the USA? Maybe just “assembled”? I am curious to see the cut quality though. I’m somewhat disappointed in my Honda with the composite deck, my old lawn boy and toro cut better I feel.

      - I never use the headlight feature for cutting the lawn; however, when I loan the self-propelled lawnmower (set to lowest speed) to my elderly neighbor who requires a walker to go up and down hills for day and night walk or getting garbage can to and from the hilly curbside it become an amazing feature! It's like Daytime Running Light when he use it for a short walk around the neighborhood and if he gets tired he can just sit on it (maybe I will get a seat cushion to put on top of the battery cover from AMAZON). All the neighbors are amazed abut the feature and it cost a lot less than an electric walker. It's his new best friend when I am not cutting the lawn. I never thought a lawnmower can be used as a safty medical equipment! EGO should build a smaller (white) unite without the mower section to the elderly people... I bet I will be able to sell it like hot cake!
      - The proper way of install/removal the bag on EGO is to press the arm handle latch (effortlessly) and swing the entire arm forward (effortlessly) so you will have WAY EASIER ACCESS WITHOUT BENDING (AND HURTING) YOUR BACK WHILE LIFTING HEAVY OBJECT like the fully loaded lawnmower bag. EGO cares for your back in their design... Toro cares to cut cost and make you "BEND OVER"!!! I broke my back once long ago and will never consider that is a good feature on Toro! Only benefit of this feature on Toro is to benefit the Dr. in the future.
      - Thickness of the deck side wall both have their pro and con. Steel is thinner, heaver and harder and can cut closer but can (and did on my old mower) scratch and rust easier. Double wall composite is thicker, lighter, more flex and can not cut as close but will never rust after been scratched (like my current EGO).
      - I like the shorter wheel base as well ;however, the sealed ball bearings does not rust out (haven't heard from any 1st generation old EGO owner complain about it yet)
      - I use the height adjustment EVERY TIME after finishing the cut to make it flat to the ground (1/2 second vs 4 second which is a 800% more efficient design. Imagine you can do everything 800% more efficient in your life!) so it is at it's flattest profile when I put it up against the wall vertically for storage. It's an excellent feature once you have it... but I will never do that if I have a Toro or at least not enjoying doing it.
      - Toro has been top for decades... but not forever. History tells for all countries, companies or athletes there is a prime time before someone take over its place regardless how long it takes. Perhaps why every auto company is trying to catchup to Tesla (I don't personally need one, own one or want one) after "top tier for decades" of success!

    appeared not to be a complete full width cut with the Ego so not totally buying the comparison for now, I'm inclined to think a steel deck can take a lot more hits when cutting around landscape objects where as the Ego seems a little cheesy with all the plastic.. As far as the control cables, I like the idea of having them somewhat expose like on the Toro as sooner then later they will need to be replaced and it looks a heck of a lot easier to access them compared to the Ego.. Last but not least,, there are many Toro dealers in my area and I have no clue where to find an Ego dealer so any warranty or repair work could become problematic. I think there was a problem with the tall grass test. The first pass with the Toro was with uncut grass on all sides of the mower. This caused the grass clippings to be trapped under the deck until the motor stalled. The Ego first pass should have been made under the same conditions. Instead, the Ego first pass was made with 2 wheels and some of the deck in the pre-cut grass. Toro makes best in class mowers
    Ego makes over priced machines
    At least the parts of the toro (deck, drive train, blades, self propel) are interchangeable with the gas mowers so they don’t cost a fortune to replace
    Also why don’t you open the side exit on the Toro? It’s a cut test, not a mulching test. Do the same on the Ego, oh wait you can’t bc that’s not an important feature apparently

    • @TheBasher05
      @TheBasher05 4 роки тому +5

      Colton Brown mulching puts the motor under the most strain so it’s a better test to see durability of the motor. Toro just plonked another manufacturers battery system (most likely stably black and decker) onto their frame. And they didn’t think to blank off the wash port. Ego make all their own products with the exception of the cells in the battery and chainsaw bars and chain. Considering all Ego do are battery powered OPE they are the industry leading brand in battery OPE. Toro are just trying to capitalise on an already overcrowded market. Simple things like ball bearing wheels make a big difference.

      I agree that the cut quality should be more in-depth on the review and yes the parts are interchangeable when someone already own an old Toro unit; however, I have to wonder if Toro breaks down that often so the interchangeable parts is very important due to the design flawed already existed on the current model for the past 30 years. George W i have not used an Ego but i use the base model Toro personal pace gas mower everyday for commercial mowing and they are easily the best I’ve ever used. They run constantly, honestly I’ve never had one bog down and shut down. I understand the stress Test but most of us aren’t going to use these units like that on a daily basis. My toro deck has never cracked and the side chute really helps. The one thing i will say is i do wish they had bearings in the wheels. Interchangeable parts isn’t a must but I’d rather buy a junker for $50 and get tons of parts than pay retail and shipping. And if the metal deck did sustain damage it could be welded. If the plastic breaks it’s done.

    • @Colton.ontheadventure
      @Colton.ontheadventure 4 роки тому +1

      Ashley Deacon i see the point of the strain test but most of us aren’t mowing grass like that on a daily basis. Furthermore it makes no sense for Toro to eliminate the wash port. That’s like a car manufacturer making the engine bay smaller for a 4 cylinder than a v8 of the same model car. Just because they can do it, doesn’t mean it makes the most sense. Ego only has part of the residential market. Companies like Stihl are making stuff not only of equal power to gas but better. Just because a company produces all their own parts doesn’t mean it’s the best. It just means they didn’t want to outsource. Toro took a mower that has been tested and used for years and offered up a useful variant. If the Ego deck cracks how do you fix it? Because if the toro cracks it can be welded. Not that it would need it I’ve stood on the mower deck and it doesn’t buckle.
