    Is a battery lawn mower worth it? My channel is all about smart and sustainable technologies, but I never thought that I’d be wanting to talk about ... a lawn mower. But here we are. I’ve been using an electric Ego lawn mower for the past 5 years, but just upgraded to the newest (2020) Ego Power+ 21" self-propelled model. How is it? And why should you consider going electric over gas?

      @Andrej Spilevoj Yes, gasoline trimmers offer slightly more run time that electric ones, at this point, (tank of gas vs. 1x battery) but the electric benefits FAR outweigh gasoline as there's no need to prime, pull the stupid chord a hundred times to get it started, the noise, smell and maintenance of a gas trimmer, which I'll NEVER do again, it's insanity, in my opinion. I have 3x batteries for my trimmer as I've bought a battery with every other tool: drill, and saw, so I just swap one out in a few seconds, and keep them charged and just pull the trigger and it works, every time. And, you can charge/fuel them with your solar panel sys., saving money on gas. Either way, all power tools are going electric within the next ~10 years, or so.

      I think you’re right regarding trimmers if you use them that long. I use mine for 10-15 minutes each time, so it’s great for that. I think gas is far superior still for long runtimes or when you need that extra power. Gasoline is just so energy dense!

    My battery powered lawnmower is the most lifechanging thing I have bought since my bidet seat attachment. Easy and pleasurable to mow the lawn now. The battery limitation is actually more of a feature for me. It ensures I never push myself too hard. They charge pretty fast so, the extra battery would likely be fully charged by the time you spent the other one. It would only matter if you needed to swap twice though because you can start out with two fully charged batteries.

    I've had an self propelled Ego mower for 3 years (so you know the generational age).
    It is nice for all the reasons Matt said as long as your weather, work and life schedule allow you maintain your lawn as a regular set priority. During mid season if the grass is not cut "on time" I'll need to take partial cuts, about 7 to 10 inches, or the grass just lays over and clogs the mower. To be fair cheaper, under powered gas mowers will do the same.
    I'm in the Chicago area where weather, especially during spring and fall cleanup, is never a scheduled event and grass can get extremely long and is worse when wet leaves are present. The Ego is slightly under powered for this and at least twice a year I have to bring out my gas mower to address the heavy load.
    To summarize I really enjoy the quieter, easier mowing with an Ego for ninety five percent of the year but, I do not see a time when I could ever toss my gas mower while still in this home. As I get older, maybe I'll hire a service to do the heavy work.
    Thanks for the good review

      If you refill a gas mower when finished, you have a full tank when you next go to use it.
      Popping a battery on a charger and refilling a gas tank are both extremely simple and easy.
      Electric tools have some great advantages. However, with you saying pointless things like this, it muddies the intellectual waters. How are all the lithium, nickle and cobalt mines treating the environment? Hopefully most electricity in your area is renewable. If you are burning fossil fuels for electricity, then your cool lawn toy just pollutes form a different place. People are so excited to get the new thing that fits the current social norms without thinking long term and big picture.

      @@ToxicityAssured Pouring gasoline into a mower is non trivial as it is estimated by the EPA that 17 million gallons are spilled every year (300 million burned). And mowers spew since they have no pollution controls.
      With batteries you never need to go the a gas station to share toxic chemicals and diseases. Unlike petrol all lithium, nickel and cobalt are re-cyclable. Burning gas is much less efficient than electrically powered EVs or mowers.

    • @ToxicityAssured
      @ToxicityAssured 4 роки тому +1

      @@johndonovan7897 Your comment was about starting off with a full "tank". I was unaware that research needed to be conducted on gasoline spillage. I rarely spill a drop, but I guess some people have more of an issue pouring liquids. How much of that spillage was filling up cars vs mowers? Mowers pollute much more per gallon of gas burned, but burn so much less than say a truck or SUV in a given week.
      Wow, you have no need to go get some diseases at the gas station... this corona thing has really gotten to you. What kind of gas stations do you have with sick people just leaning on the pumps coughing?
      Lots of things are recyclable, people still don't do it. Let me point the finger of ignorance back at ya, do some research on ewaste. Ewaste is a huge problem and all the Ego mowers will be ewaste soon, recycle that buddy.
      If you've read this far, I offer some respect. You say gasoline isn't recyclable, ever hear of photosynthesis. Plants, if we don't mow them down, take the CO2 and convert it into biomass. The biomass over centuries can accumulate forming... oil and gas. Long time coming, but gasoline is recyclable in a 100% natural way.

Even though it was a hot day, and I was sweating at the end, it didn't really feel like a workout like my gas powered mower usually does. I bought it for the lack of maintenance, No Fumes, & Low noise. I no longer had to wear ear protection when mowing. I decided to wax the underdeck before mowing to ensure the grass didn't stick. That seemed to work great. You mentioned it came with a third blade in the box for switching out? I didn't see a thrid blade in my box.

    My biggest issues are the rear wheel drive that locks up all the time. In addition it's much more difficult to start and stop. My old gas mower was front wheel drive and you simply lift the front wheels a little by pushing down the handle a little and turning. I know this doesn't have as much grip but it makes it way easier than the rear wheel drive that locks up and that you must stop whenever you need to turn around a tree or simply make a 180° turn.
    This dual blade may be better but the one I have now just will not pick up leaves and other stuff on the lawn like a gas more. This means a lot more raking or leaf blowing.
    Another pet peeve with all the ego tools is the delayed start. With the hedge trimmers and the lawn mower and everything it's frustrating when you are starting and stopping a lot to have to wait that seemingly short half second or two but it drives me nuts.

    I bought an Ego mower on Amazon and the manufacturer refused to warranty it because it was a third party sale. No argument about whether it was new or not, just a flat refusal to fix it. It failed after one year. I pestered them until they sent me the repair manual. The problem was poor quality control in the assembly. A wire was routed poorly and cold soldered. The interior wiring was embarrassingly bad. Once I fixed the errors it was fine. The design is ok, it's just the workmanship. I hope they have solved that problem. Just be careful about their warranty. Check to see if they authorize the sale. I tried to review the mower online, but they had suspended reviews. I have never run the battery all the way down. I run down before the battery does... I use it for weeds and grass, and I like the way it revs up when the weeds are thick instead of slowing down. Definitely a big improvement over gas mowers...

    After a year of owning the self propelled model, my assessment is also favourable. HOWEVER, your review does sound a bit like an ad, because it omits all of the negative points that have become clear to me. To wit:
    - the cost is about double that of an equivalent gas mower
    - replacement blades are about twice as expensive
    - blades are thinner than normal, and more fragile
    - in thick grass, the mower will easily overload, stop, and flash yellow
    - the power is about equivalent to the weakest gas mower. So you are ok if your lawn is small and often mowed.
    - the mulching insert is a separate doodad to store and lose, same for the side discharge I assume, though that is an extra charge accessory that I don't have
    - and finally, the drive shaft for the self propel is a crude iron rod that began to rust immediately
    BUT, you did also miss one big plus - the plastic deck is strong and will never rust. Rusted deck is what ultimately killed most of my previous mowers.

    • @specialopsdave
      @specialopsdave 2 роки тому

      -You can (and should, IMO) get aftermarket blades, for all mowers, since all stock blades kind of suck
      -Overload to flashing yellow is much more pleasant to restart than a stalled gas mower
      -Definitely stronger than the weakest gas mower, I don't know where you got that from. Maybe weaker than Honda's weakest, but not weaker than an off-brand gas mower, not even close.
      -Gas mowers also require an accesory to hold open the side discharge door, as the chute itself is typically a separate attatchment.
      And yeah, I agree the cost is high and iron driveshaft is stupid. Hope they fix it in the next generation!

      it's not going to mulch, but I've never had the bag on it. I don't notice clippings at all when I'm cutting the grass. i get an even lawn, and it cuts through the damn dandelions that have crept in lately. the battery will slow down or shut off if the grass is too wet or too tall, but that's an easy fix; I just raise it and go over it twice, if that's even necessary, which is rarely is. For the ease of use, quietness, compactness (it folds up, stands on its end, and takes so little space in my garage), and with the long lasting/quick charging battery, you can't beat it. I live on 1/3 acre now, but used it happily on one acre. I've owned mine for over 6 years and it's been great! I'm just getting around to sharpening the blades now. I went on to the Ego company community to investigate, and found that I was not the only one to have that problem. It seems that collapsing the handle, which is a handy space-saving feature, causes a short in the wiring. Besides that, people were complaining that it takes forever to have the issue repaired, and parts are sometimes difficult to procure. Disappointed, I had to return the mower to Home Depot. Doesn't seem that Ego has worked the bugs out of this model, even though a good many have complained about it. The concept is great, but the mower is too expensive to have to put up with such inconveniences. Now I have come to appreciate my more primitive, but more dependable, gas-run mower.

    The biggest problem I see with battery electric mowers and other tools is the batteries. They die in the off season and after just a few years the companies change the design and stop supporting them. Maybe if they stop obsoleting everything they make every 2 years, it would be a better option, but then how do they keep ripping off consumers? I had the same gas mower from 1985 to 2013. It still ran then when I gave it to the guy that bought the house. Its hard to compete with that. It may even be environmentaly better to burn some gas than to manufacture 3 mowers and 6 new batteies to do the same work over the same period. I would prefer an electric mower for all the reasons cited, but big steps towards standardization and interchangeability need to occur.

    Thanks for this clear review of the key aspects of the EGo mower. I've used a Works lithium battery mower for three years on a similar sized lawn to yours. It's not self-propelled, but as my lawn is level, this isn't an issue. The battery charges from zero in an hour and gives 30 minutes work. This is a cheap mower (150 GBP) when compared with other battery models. It collects efficiently but doesn't mulch. It reminds me of hoovering rather than mowing owing to the low noise and light weight. The only issue is the first cut of the season. I hesitate to use the Works for this as it could result in burnout, so I use my old hover plug- in cable mower, which has more power but not a lot of hover. This makes me appreciate the Works on the second cut.

    Had my Ego lawnmower for 2 years now and love it. It does tend to leave a slight trail behind no matter how much I overcut. My Honda handled this much better. But other than that, the mower is great. I have many of their other tools (edger, hedge trimmer, string trimmer). I like them although maybe the hedge trimmer is not as good as my Stihl gasser was. My problem with Ego is customer support. last year I bought one of their power station inverter generators. It'll run my fridge all day with 4 - 7.5 AH batteries during a power outage. Its a nice alternative (albeit a bit pricy) to a generator. Back in April, I had a problem and one of the battery stations failed to work. After going back and forth proving when I bought it (I'd lost the Home Depot receipt) they finally authorized me to return it. Then the problems really began. They would send ambiguous shipping information to me, and when I asked for clarification the email would go unanswered for weeks. Finally, complete radio silence (its now July). Like most people, the last few months have presented challenges more important than getting this thing replaced. But now I need to start bugging them by phone. I've heard other people complain about customer support issues (check Home Depot's reviews on Ego products). Its disappointing because I really like their stuff and have a lot invested in the battery ecosystem.

    Thank you for this honest review. I've been think about a ego lawn mower for over a year now. We own ego leaf blower and a weedeater. Each came with a charger and battery so I can interchange battery should the need arise. Also liked your ego snowblower review. Will watch again to catch model number. 👍

    I've had my Ego self propelled mower for 5 years now and it has almost been perfect. The self propelled feature has failed but Ego has told me where to bring it(local Home Depot) for a free repair. I have not done that yet as it has just happened and well Covid. I also have their blower and hedge trimmer. The charger and batteries have been flawless. The only thing I have ever had to do with my mower is sharpen the blade. No issues with grass buildup or the handle clips you mentioned.

    Moved into my first house a year ago and had to buy my first lawnmower. Did some research on battery mowers and went with Ego.
    So the model in between the one you had and the one you have now is what I own. They added the push key to the handle instead of making it dangle so that's been a thing for at least a few years.
    What yours has that I wish mine had is a battery that doesn't just glow with a single ring of color to denote charge level, and the LED control being on the handle as well. The self-propel speed dial is in a nicer location on yours, but it's not terrible on my older model, just requires a bit more coordination to use.
    But yeah, I love my Ego mower and string trimmer (though on the latter I'd suggest getting the self-loading model). I ran my mower on a single charge until it was drained to see how long it would last, and it was a nearly two full mows on my property using the self-propel feature pretty consistently (bumpy lawn). What was nice is when it finally died I just plopped the battery on the charger and went for a walk with my family and came back to a battery that was charged enough to finish the job. No need to either store gas in my garage for such situations or run to a gas station for gas if I didn't have any stored or ran out. Given it has no other liquid needs and I can store it upright, in addition to not having to store or go buy gas for it, are all reasons I cite when explaining why I very much love my battery yard tools over gas driven ones.
    That said, having used mine enough I can agree that offering models with metal decks would be a nice plus for some yards.
    I plan to get their new high end blower and the edger this summer. There's also ways to buy their tools "bare" without the battery if you have plenty of batteries already, which can save you around $100 per tool.

      I got one many yr.s ago, it's not quite professional grade but near ideal for my use with almost zero issues except for leaking bar oil on the shelf. It is somewhat bulky and heavy maybe with batt. but well worth it. I went thru several garbage corded saws in a couple yr.s before going EGO. (now have their blower, mower and hedge trimmer with weed wacker in my shopping cart) I've talked with pro tree trimmers who use professional batt chainsaws every day....Milwaukee I believe.

    I love my self propelled EGO! I had a Kobalt corded electric before it and liked its cutting better but the cord was a pain! My first mower in 1979 when I got married was electric with 2 blades and a cord but even then I had had it with gas and it’s breakdowns, fuel, plugs etc. I also have a full selection of Black and Decker electric trimmer-edger, blower, drill etc and an electric Ford Focus to drive! Tesla M-Y next year and we are set!

    I've had my ego mower for about 6 years now and I love it. I happen to love mowing and trimming the lawn, and do so regularly. I think the only time I have a slight problem with my mower is when the grass is too tall. Which rarely happens unless we're away on vacation. But even then, it still works, I just may have to raise the blades and go over it twice so it doesn't stop the battery from shutting down. Mine came with two batteries but I only need one per mowing and I still have power left over to trim (we live on about a 1/3 acre). It'll take more battery power if the grass is wet or tall. But it only takes about 15 minutes to recharge a battery, so it's not the worst case if you need to charge in the middle of cutting. It's super quiet and easy to push. It folds so compact, it takes up little space in my garage. I'm disabled and I could lift it if necessary, but it is heavy.
    Now I want the snowblower. My hubby doesn't want to spend the money but he's not the one shoveling, so it's gonna show up at our house sooner or later...

    • @ArtOfHealth
      @ArtOfHealth 4 роки тому +1

      Toni MP Thats a confusing story. YOU are disabled. YOU do all the lawn and trim maintenance and shoveling of feet of snow every year, and your husband must work extremely hard long hours on his job. Your HUSBAND does NOT want to make YOUR job easier? Huh? I use to sell vacuum cleaners in homes. They made womens jobs easy. The husbands would say that they felt their tools in the garage were more important than a vacuum cleaner. This is 2020 men. If your honeybunch wants to help around the yard, take care of her. Love works two ways men!

    • @tonimp4317
      @tonimp4317 4 роки тому

      @@ArtOfHealth while I appreciate the support, it IS 2020 and women can do the yard work and snow shoveling. My dad passed when I was 7 so my mom and I had to do everything around the house by ourselves. I learned how to do plumbing because we couldn't afford a real plumber. My husband loves that I can fix things myself because he honestly doesn't have the time. He works really long days, 7 days a week. He's the reason I get to be a stay-at-home mom and ever since my disability took over my life and made it hard for me to go to work so he works extra hard to pay all the bills.
      All that being said, when I have days where I CAN'T do stuff, he does it in the middle of the night when he's home. And I love mowing and trimming the lawn. I even do it for my neighbours when they're busy. It's exercise that I enjoy. Snow shoveling wasn't in the cards this past winter as I got worse so that's why we're saving up for the snow blower. We just keep having a lot of surprise bills popping up (like car breaking down, roof leaking, etc). It is what it is. Thanks for having my back, though!

    Bought my ego self propelled 3 years ago and Now look forward to mowing. I never thought I would leave the ice mower behind. But this mower cuts every big as good as a gas one. To reduce battery degradation I charge the battery the day of mowing, then when done just put it in my air conditioned shed with about 50% charge left. At this rate it should last for 10 years! I also have the 530 CFM blower. Very high quality tools.

    I bought an electric mower 5 yrs ago. Mine is a Kobalt. It is so much quieter and lighter than the gas Honda that it replaced. Mowing my lawn with that Honda always kicked my butt, especially in the heat of summer. My wife would never mow the lawn. But she likes this electric mower so much that I haven't even been able to mow my yard in several years now. She loves to use it. We have two batteries and between them we never have a range issue.

    I don't have an Ego mower but instead a 21" Ryobi 40v. Opted for the version without self propulsion since my yard is flat. It came with a 6ah battery that's enough to mow my whole yard, 60' x 130'. Only 4 cents of electricity to mow my whole lawn lol. Loving the family of tools that use the same battery.

    Thinking back on my childhood and growing up in the 80-90s, my family never had a gas engine lawn mower. I remember the classic two wheeled manual thing you pushed around, giving you a good work out at the same time. But we also hand an electric lawn mower already then, but it had a cord. I probably used it many times and I can't remember the cord being a problem, even though we had a lot of small trees and bushes you had to navigate around. If I end up in a house some day, I would probably go for one with a cord again for simplicity and price.

    I have had an EGO self propelled for 2 years now. It is single blade, vertical battery and has the better clips for the collapsible push handle. After two years of use the clips are still firm and hold the handle perfectly, so I think yours will be fine for years to come. We also have the EGO string trimmer, hedge trimmer, leaf blower, and chain saw. After we moved from a rental house with a small yard to the home we purchased with a large yard we added a Ryobi electric riding mower. The best thing is pick a brand, all of our batteries for the EGO equipment are interchangeable.

    I bought a Greenworks mower three years ago. It does a very good job and the benefits far outweigh the very few disadvantages. I also have the leaf blower to go with it. The reliability, for both items, has been excellent.
