Volunteer plants have survived and incorporated in their genetic makeup information about the soil you planted them in, the climate, and all sorts of information that will make them the strongest plants you have. I always save seeds from my volunteer plants, if possible, because they will have the most chance of sprouting next year! It's wonderful that you notice that,Rachel. Shows your gardening spirit!🌻
Take as many minutes as you want, Rachel. Once this video is over, I’m going to have to search for something else to watch, so I prefer the longer videos. I know a lot of people don’t because most attention spans can only be measured in nanoseconds.
I love sweet potato greens and eat them nearly every morning for breakfast from August-October. I even have some in the dehydrator right now so I can add them to a greens powder. Thank you for sharing your lovely garden.
Hi Rachel...great tour! I live in Ireland and would so love to grow the lovely peppers that you can. Volunteers are the best plants because they WANT to be there...they loved the garden last year and produced seed so they could come back! I currently have some of the biggest and best Swede turnips (rutabagas to you) I've ever had from one that went to seed last year and I keep finding enormous specimens that taste delicious all over the beds! Happy Gardening.😎
Dried beans are such a favorite! Plant and forget until they die back and rattle in pods .. harvest and shuck during a football game or while canner is going ❤
Hey, I am a permaculture and backyard gardener from India. Rt now I am in Mi with my daughter and wanted to see some gardens and how they work here. So happy that I came across your vedeos.
Leave shade cloth on until you have sturdy plants. Remove shade cloth gradually just as you harden off spring plants. Remove for several hrs a day, increase light each day over the period of a week or so.
My volunteer cherry tomatoes are still full of yellow blooms & green fruit. I have a chocolate cherry that is 12 ft. tall with the most delicious flavor. I have around 10 that have popped up & here it is almost Halloween. Your garden is extraordinary! I was really proud of my cantaloupes like you are your beautiful pumpkin. I cooked some of the sweet potatoes I grew for dinner Sunday. Awesome video! Thanks for sharing it.
Rachel you are absolutely beautiful In your garden! Just glowing! Long time sub here in Southern Ontario Canada. Just anxiously waiting to plant out ! We got a unexpected snow storm a few days ago but gone the next day so . My baby kale plants and cabbages made it through....whew!!! Anyways I've learned so much from you and Todd I think I can speak for everyone here and say a big THANK YOU 😊!!!! BEST of luck for the 2022 growing season 👍
From Ohio,Our volunteer cherry tomato is booming too. Kennebec potatoes were smaller than normal, best bell pepper harvest in years. Some years can be so pleasantly surprising. 🥳
Volunteer crops are the best because it is the seed that had the genetics to survive the harsh conditions and grow. There were probably many seeds there, of the same variety, that didn't grow.
Mine did great. I used tomato cages this year. Last my zucchini did nothing really. I harvested 3. This year with them up off the ground I am so pleased 18 off 3 plant's. I guess that's good? Lot's for a really small garden. I also used the cage's for my pepper's. Try it next year and see if it work's for you.
I feel crazy commenting 2 years after the fact, but... I feel so bad for your cabbage moth problem! We leave the wasp nests on the back side of the barn and the wasps are AMAZING at taking care of the cabbage worms. In the last few years, we have only lost a few cabbages and broccoli. The rabbits ate the tops off of all the cabbages last year (lol) but I cut the tops off and used the rest. Use your natural friends like bees, wasps, bats, mantis and ladybugs!
So gorgeous! I have a garden that big, and mine is weedy in places, with plants falling over and badly trellised, and indoors there are overgrown fall transplants because the green beans won't stop producing. : ) In other words, I admire your organization skills because I know how hard it is to keep such a tidy garden and get three harvests in. I did seven hours in the kitchen yesterday, so I clearly need more hours in the days of August.
You have no idea how much you inspire me!!! I like to tell my husband you remind me of me. Lol I love everything that you show us!!! You guys are Absolutely one of my favorites to watch!!!
I'm just waiting for this season to be over with, but Rachael, watching you wind down your summer garden is making me even more impatient for Spring here in Australia. Only a few weeks now, and I tell ya, it can't come quick enough! Hooray for your Cindarella, she's very pretty! I've got 31 varieties of pumpkin to grow this year (!!) I'm determined to fit them all in! 😊 Re the vertical zucchini, maybe try growing them on a 45 degree angle? It's less stress on both the plants and the gardener, they naturally want to ramble, but they just aren't climbers... This way still frees up space but is a more gentle approach. I'm trying it myself this season - rigging up some simple frames for the zucchini and planting leafy greens under. Volunteers often produce better because they're more acclimatised to the Micro-climate in which they've grown. It's why I save seed where I can, the resulting plant health and harvest increase is noticeable! Thanks for your tour! Loving the sunflowers 😍
Volunteers know the right time for them to sprout and grow. I also haven't grown a pumpkin to vine rips ever. Actually drives me nuts when people say pumpkins are fun and easy. Not for me! I've tried in 2 very different climates too, several times (zone 4 and 8). I'm happy for you!
by my experience i have been using marigold/ Borage for my veggie garden especially for tomatoes for repelling tomato hornworm, yikes grr don’t like them yes it work! Loved the garden tour Rachel.
I agree. I had a cucumber volunteer before that produced 25 cucumbers. I have never had success before or after this. None of the cucumbers I have ever planted even survived long enough to produce.
enjoyed your garden tour I see I am not the only gardener that Is dealing with problems In my garden my bush bean leaves are getting Eaten up by bugs but I know I have had some good luck to well maybe are fall gardens well do better
Your garden looks smashing. We grow our zucchini diagonally not vertically. We take a small wooden picket fence panel, lean it diagonally to a stake or fencepost and grow the zucchini on that. It has more support, the plant and fruits can lay on the fence and last year we grew radishes (even in high summer) underneath the "trellis". This year we had a bigger panel, cut that in half and leaned it against each other like an A frame, worked great too. And we let them grow wild, just redirect them to lay on the fencing, lots of zucchini that way.
I'm down in metro East and could not get cucumbers going this year! They got to about six inches high and stalled. Oh well, I over-pickled last year, so I'm good. : )
The sprouts might still recover, maybe don't pull them out yet. We've had cabbages that were absolutely devastated by something that ate them grow back the next spring, you get small heads but it's still good. Very nice garden, I'm dead impressed.
If you put some kind of bird bath in your garden they won’t go after your tomatoes. They do it to get water. I did it and have not had one tomato eaten since then.😊
I planted Contender bush green beans this year for the first time and mine didn't germinate real well either. I had to replant several to get a good patch going. I did get a good harvest from them but....... hoping that the late summer planting will go better. I haven't tried sweet potatoes or even regular potatoes yet, but wow! They are stunning! Oh, the birds are attacking my tomatoes something fierce. I've only been able to get unripened ones, little buggers :( I got a silver mylar tinsel backdrop to drape over the plants and put a fake snake around the bottom to hopefully discourage them, erg........
I love your cattle panel arch -- what a lovely place to be. I hope to have one someday. We also planted cucumbers recently and hope to get some before frost. Congrats on your success with pumpkins this year.
Wow that bean trellis!!!! I’m hoping to do that exact thing next year!!! Ill have to go back into your planting videos and see how many you planted on it so i know how to next year :)
What a beautiful garden you have thanks for sharing i just planted broccoli seeds last week and they are allready coming up and i planted some cactus flower dahlias and they are coming up also.
Glad your pumpkins and squash are doing so well! Unfortunately, mine are being destroyed by squash bugs and vine borers. Going to try the foil trick next year
I tried vertically growing zucchini last year. It was a fun experiment but I probably won't do it again. It was mainly a hassle. Your garden is beautiful!
I love your channel! I’d love to see a video on how you water it all. I have a smaller garden and busy working but love to see ideas on how you manage your big area.
I have seedflats about ready to plant. Parsley root, zinnias, and swiss chard. Cant wait for shirley poppies to sprout. Already put canary melon, zucchini, and butternut squash in. It will be a close timing on those. I have pole beans starting too!
Lol you are hilarious.... Squirrel!!!😂... Stay focused 😂 I laugh cause I'm the same. I hope my first time doing raised beds vs my patio containers is half as successful as your 2020 year has been. Cheers!😉
I honestly have more success with volunteers as well- I am having great success with my yellow zucchini (squash ) this year & am amazed but not vertically as I have planted in a bed with heaps of room for them. Loved this video Rachel & your garden is great. Cheers Denise - Australia
It’s so beautiful. Perfect places for your last hoorah before the winter comes. I love it. We were 103 today in Central Texas. I’m itching to get my fall plants in, but it’s still too early. Glad I can enjoy yours. God bless. 👏🏻💕👏🏻. Oh, what do you do with Borage? A lot of gardeners grow it, but I don’t know how to use it? Thanks.
the flowers are edible; toss on top of salads. Some people freeze the flowers into ice cubes for a very decorative serving of lemonade. They attract bees, and I think most people grow them for that.
Good to know about vertical zukes, which I was considering for next year. I was not impressed with the taste on my Super Fantastics. If you end up liking them, I'll give them a second chance (it's been so dry here, it could be the weather.)
The garden looks beautiful and bountiful...even with cabbage moth worm damage! I tend to expect at least one massive failure per year. Sweet potatoes were an utter fail this year for me! Speaking of which...those leaves I treat just like a spinach I would cook and throw into casserole, quiche, soup, sauce. Whatever. In fact I havent bothered with spinach because the sweet potato leaves fill that role while growing tubers at the same time.
Curious if you water by hand or if you have drip irrigation installed? Your garden is beautiful! Obviously you give it lots of TLC. I recently discovered your channel and really enjoy your videos! I learn something new every time. Thank you for your efforts to share with all of us!
Rachel, what are you using for audio recording/microphone? I didn't see a lavalier mic on your shirt but was really impressed with your consistent audio as you moved around the garden. I'd love to learn.
Living Traditions Homestead just had a fermented corn relish video. Is that the same? I guess I think of pickling and fermenting the same even though they aren't really, are they? Anyway, Sarah might know the recipe since Rachel doesn't.

Volunteers are survivers. They're determined to live and be great....who can be mad at that🤷

Ha, thanks for hanging in with me Eric
Finally a channel with long videos to watch, learn and appreciate farm living!
Excellent! We're happy you found us ♥

Handy tip...
Rosemary & Sage (deter cabbage-moth) & Thyme (deters cabbage-worm)
😀😀oh, lets admire this beet for a minute...

Super fantastic tomatoes are so delicious!
Borage is my all time favourite! I've been saving the seeds from mine.
by my experience i have been using marigold/ Borage for my veggie garden especially for tomatoes for repelling tomato hornworm, yikes grr don’t like them yes it work! Loved the garden tour Rachel.
I think volunteers are more prolific because they’re already more acclimated to your climate, soil, etc vs the seeds straight out of the packet 😉
Thanks for your videos! I agree about the volunteers!:)))) Love them!
Aren't they the best
gorgeous garden. we only bought 3 tomato plants this year but our 7 volunteers are doing the best. love your videos.
I agree. I had a cucumber volunteer before that produced 25 cucumbers. I have never had success before or after this. None of the cucumbers I have ever planted even survived long enough to produce.
Love the trellis!!! ❤️❤️❤️
What a great garden you have this year, Rachel! So productive! I love how excited you get for your plants and harvests, you’re adorable!
Awe thanks, I do get excitable
enjoyed your garden tour I see I am not the only gardener that Is dealing with problems In my garden my bush bean leaves are getting Eaten up by bugs but I know I have had some good luck to well maybe are fall gardens well do better
I too have raised beds and love the clean lines. Your garden speaks to my heart. My broccoli never produced heads. 🤨
Lovely garden 😍😍😍😍 regards from the Philippines
Thanks for the August garden tour. Love your videos!

Big time cucumber harvest here in Central IL along with a ton of Kentucky Blue Wonder pole beans and summer squash!
I'm down in metro East and could not get cucumbers going this year! They got to about six inches high and stalled. Oh well, I over-pickled last year, so I'm good. : )
Every year we get better and better!
I’m a new veggie gardener this year and have really enjoyed watching your garden journey this year thanks 😊
Beautiful garden.
I harvested figs and a casaba melon today in my desert garden.
The sprouts might still recover, maybe don't pull them out yet. We've had cabbages that were absolutely devastated by something that ate them grow back the next spring, you get small heads but it's still good. Very nice garden, I'm dead impressed.
Definitely growing vertically at my own place. So beautiful too!
Love your garden!
Very productive garden this year!
Great garden! I always wanted to grow pumpkins by my front door to be ready for Thanksgiving & Halloween.
Oh I tried that one year, just not enough sun at me front porch but that would be amazing
Its All so beautiful. Love your tour
If you put some kind of bird bath in your garden they won’t go after your tomatoes. They do it to get water. I did it and have not had one tomato eaten since then.😊
You’re so talented with videoing and making it so interesting. Lovely garden.
Thank you
Thanks for update cheers 🍻
Wow!!! That sunflower!!
Crazy huh, my biggest ever
God plants the volunteers

Envious of your sunflowers 🌻! I have only a small garden, but had two sunflowers open-only to have the squirrels get them...
Wow that bean trellis!!!! I’m hoping to do that exact thing next year!!! Ill have to go back into your planting videos and see how many you planted on it so i know how to next year :)
I love your garden. It's gorgeous 🌿
Que bello jardín te felicito beautiful garden!!!
Great tour! Nice to see you again, from Alberta Canada!
Going to try the foil trick next year
Don't do the foil, it works ok but the knee high pantyhose works do much better
I tried vertically growing zucchini last year. It was a fun experiment but I probably won't do it again. It was mainly a hassle. Your garden is beautiful!
It all looks great. It’s so hot here I can’t plant fall stuff yet but I’m getting a second chance it squash and cucs. Happy gardening! 🌱
I can’t wait to see one on your pumpkins. We lost another years crop to vine borers. Idk what else to do. It is so depressing.
I love your channel! I’d love to see a video on how you water it all. I have a smaller garden and busy working but love to see ideas on how you manage your big area.

I live in Utah and my blue lake bush beans had a horrible germination as well.
Potato leaves. Who would of thought that they could be eaten. Thanks for the info.
Just sweet potato leaves
great tour
Lol you are hilarious.... Squirrel!!!😂... Stay focused 😂 I laugh cause I'm the same. I hope my first time doing raised beds vs my patio containers is half as successful as your 2020 year has been. Cheers!😉
Loved the tour! And congratulations on 50k subscribers!! ❤👏👏👏👏
Thank you so much
I have had a bad cucumber year as well pests and a late cold snap in central Florida.
BLESSINGS 💗
I just found you on UA-cam today and I love your videos. I do NOT love your chosen football team though 😂🤷♀️. Hello from Pennsylvania! We Are! 💙🤍💙🤍
I honestly have more success with volunteers as well- I am having great success with my yellow zucchini (squash ) this year & am amazed but not vertically as I have planted in a bed with heaps of room for them. Loved this video Rachel & your garden is great. Cheers Denise - Australia
Your garden looks fabulous! My peppers are going crazy too! I keep having to either cut up and freeze or I dehydrate them

I, too, always let the volunteers stay. I had amazing lettuce, sunflowers, and tomatoes that I wouldn't have gotten otherwise!
Whatever. Awesome thanks for sharing
Our garden didn’t turn out this year. Our Roma tomatoes all ended up with Blossom Rot. No beans, a few small peppers.
It's 2/10/22....just watching this...thoughts on the super fantastic tomato?
Curious if you water by hand or if you have drip irrigation installed? Your garden is beautiful! Obviously you give it lots of TLC. I recently discovered your channel and really enjoy your videos! I learn something new every time. Thank you for your efforts to share with all of us!
I do hand water to set seeds but then only have an overhead sprinkler system
I've never seen a squash borer in my area after 40 years of planting squash. Now squash beetles I've had major problems.
I love your channel. Do you sell the vegetables or they are only for your food? Hugs from Nicaragua. May God bless you.
Hey Rachel. Loving your videos/channel! Can you tell me what camera you used to film this? LOVE the quality and considering a new purchase. Thanks!!!
If you go to our Amazon shop there is a category for video production and our equipment is in there.

How big is your garden plot? I’ve really enjoyed following along this year! Fellow Michigan gardener here!
40 x 40. Pure Michigan baby ❤️
That 1870's Homestead yes yes!! ❤️❤️
So whats the squasg plant trick? Ive watched all the more resent videos and havent found it yet
Rachel, what are you using for audio recording/microphone? I didn't see a lavalier mic on your shirt but was really impressed with your consistent audio as you moved around the garden. I'd love to learn.
It just the mic on the camera
Do you plan on trying sunflower tea from the plant?
Use big tomato cages for zucchini
It is so beautiful an a dream of mine to have one your size. What is the square foot of your garden?
It's about 40x 40 ft
have you ever laid a board over your carrots after you moisten them ?
No I haven't
How close did you plant the peppers?
2 SQ feet per plant
@@1870s thanks!
Can you trellis the Zucchini?
Do you know how to pickle corn? It's a very old receipt having a hard time find it.
I don't
Living Traditions Homestead just had a fermented corn relish video. Is that the same? I guess I think of pickling and fermenting the same even though they aren't really, are they? Anyway, Sarah might know the recipe since Rachel doesn't.
@@sardee1315 I do believe Sarah was fermenting her relish, not sure if it would be the same recipe as just a plain pickled corn
❤️❤️❤️🙏🏻
What do you do with the borage?
It's mostly just for the bees to harvest nectar and pollen. And it's pretty 🌻
What zone are you guys in? I've meant to ask that, but keep forgetting.
Zone 6 a
Thanks so much. I'm in 5b. I just wondered how close our seasons were when I'm looking at what and when you're planting things.
How much land would you say you use for gardening? Thank you so much
It's exactly 40x40 ft
@@1870s Does that pretty much take care of y'all for a years worth of canning. Were wanting to down size some for next year.
