Oh potato harvests are my all time favourite videos to watch. I'm pushing my bed space to produce as much as I can this year, so I've experimented with planting potatoes and peas together. Potatoes were put down and covered, climbing peas planted on top. The potatoes take a few weeks to come up giving the peas a chance to climb above the foliage. So far so good, hopefully I get a good crop of both from the one bed.
You have to eat a lot of green potato to eat and get sick.Oh and you can be gardening for 30 years and still learn something new each year I think you’re doing a phenomenal job.
I don't like having to dig potatoes either! So now I grow my potatoes in large planting bags. Makes harvest easy because you can just dump the whole bag into a wheelbarrow, pull out the potatoes, and re-use the soil (with amending).
DancingHorseFarm1 wish I had thought of this sooner! I’m about ready to harvest some red/ yellow potatoes from the garden bed... worried about these thin skinned varieties and how many I might damage in the process!
I grow my potatoes in 20# grow bags set in front of the cold frame and sitting on a big black hard plastic rubbery things usually used for under pet houses I guess. My son in law found it at Tractor Supply when we were setting up the rabbits house. On two sides and in front I let mint grow to its hearts content in the soil surrounding it. I can cut the leaves for Meadow Tea but also have found the aroma confuses many garden insects such as the potato bug. Haven't seen one in the years I have grown potatoes this way. Mint foils the moths that lay cabbage worms too. My cabbage is hole free. They look like the photos in the seed catalogs. I grow organically. Nothing is sprayed. I would like to try freezing a bag of O'Brien potatoes but no room left in the freezers. Need to put some of that meat in there in jars first. Love your channel! Great content.
You don’t have to let them die back. After they have flowered they are ready a few weeks later-so it’s the perfect time. I live in the potato growing capital of Ontario, Canada. I do about hundred plants a year. The farmers spray their plants so the tops die. That doesn’t happen quickly like people think! I started harvesting yesterday.
Thank you!! First time grower, Started to grab a few out of my garden, Alberta Canada... they were pretty big! Follow my channel at seeds and self reliance... newbie channel and gardener

My grandpa always planted his potatoes in hills. (3-4) eyes in each hill. He got pretty good amount from them. Not sure what type, I remember there were slit big to little ones! Tasted great washed and ate raw. He planted green onions and let some in ground knocked over green parts to get onion to get bigger before they went to seed . They got really big that way. Just wanted to share
This year we did the Ruth stouth method and just put 3/4 handfuls of humus compost on top of the seed potato and covered in hay. Then we covered in hay as they grew and it made 55lbs of potatoes in a whole row!!! I'm definitely staying with Ruth stouth method ❤️ we didn't get a single green one either
Especially for potatoes, I switched to a deep mulch method in 3 foot by 10 foot garden beds many years ago. With deep mulch the potatoes are just below the soil level and easy to hand dig out. Separated into beds mean one can go one bed at a time and feel more of a sense of accomplishment as each bed is completed. I plant mine 4" deep and mulch with meadow (grass) clippings. I don't get sun burned potatoes.
The green parts that had eyes went into my compost bin around the edges and actually produced potatoes for me. I used just a piece of chicken wire for my bins and keep adding more grass clippings and leaves. Nothing taste as good as fresh potatoes! Wonderful video, keep up the good work! 🙂
You're not experts. Who cares? Y'all are a fun couple to watch. I'd love to just cruise by after work and hang out, and see what y'all are doing tonight.

Keep them in some moist peat moss inside your garage to overwinter. You don't need to can them or freeze them. But since you harvest them too early, you need to cure them before you put them into the moist peat moss or they will start sprouting. Leave some potatoes in the ground. They will overwinter easily and pop up at the right time next spring. If you harvest them in October when the temperature falls low enough, you can start storing them in moist peat moss in your garage without curing them.
Thanks for sharing your harvest. Every year is a learning experience for all of us too. It was funny seeing the garbage lid potato collector as I thought only I did that. LOL Take care and stay safe, Rob
That's a good harvest for pulling them early. I did the Ruth Stout method for the first time on some of my potatoes and got big time slug damage so didn't get many.
If you like mashed potatoes or twice baked potato casserole (with bacon - YUM!), you can boil or bake up a bunch (I usually leave peels on), then mash and mix together in a couple of big canning stock pots. Portion out and freeze in Ziplocks (squeeze out air) or Vac Seal Bags (on moist/gentle setting). Then stack like library books in freezer. To use, pop a bag in the microwave on defrost or toss in the sink to defrost, then dump into a baking dish (will appear juicy, but thicken up during baking) and bake in the oven on 400F until hot (about 20 mins). It's been our favorite way to store potatoes and makes for quick and easy side dishes for supper!
In Tennessee the plants are green when we dig. The ants will ruin them if we let them go to long. We never hill them . We always get the same amount off the plant. Its amazing how different growing can be from one area to another. Grew up in Illinois and we always hilled taters.
My first time gardening, and I planted potatoes. They are flowering and they look gorgeous. I would love to see how you freeze potatoes. I have a huge gallon of potatoes and I hope they are huge. Wish I can picture and show you my potatoe bucket
I always have a bunch of plants come back next year from little ones that got left in . We never cure potatoes , but it makes sense if you’re canning them
You could do potato’s in containers so you don’t have to dig. Then you won’t have to worry about putting your fall crops in (that’s my plan for potato’s this year)
My grandfather always grew potatos in a large round bale of hay. I have not tried it but I know there wasn't any issues with the sunbuning,...and when he was done with the bale of hay he used it in the chicken pen...which made compost which eventually made its way back to the garden.
Thanks for the potato storage/preservation tips! We just had our biggest potato haul ever and we don't want them to sprout in the middle of winter. We also harvested a couple potatoes that started to sprout... we stuck them back in the ground. Thanks for sharing! We tried the Ruth Stout method this year so we are anxious to see the results.
Nice potatoe harvest , maybe you try Ruth Stout again ? I grew in 20 gallon grow bags and was my first time and just fun and a nice show ,they were sweet potatoes and I just think they are beautiful and wild . I have them growing in flower bed near door this year mixed in some purple kale and herbs looking wonderful . I would love to grow a giant row to put up . Looking forward to canning video
Beautiful dirt! We like to can our potatoes for quick and easy side for supper but I need to tell Andrea about the freezer style because that sounds delicious.
So jealous of your lovely rich soil! You may be newer to gardening but looks like you're doing it right! Loved the O'Brien storage idea...gonna try that!😀
You had a great harvest compared to mine. Mine got decimated by two little green worms 🐛. By the time I found the worms it was to late. My harvest was one little spud 🥔. It's as big as my thumb ---hahahahahahahaha.
Personally I really do love the Ruth Stout method BUT you need to start with a good 24" of mulch and add more as it breaks down through the season. You have a decent haul there of nice looking potatoes. Nothing tastes better than home grown potatoes!

Can't get straw or hay in my area that doesn't have round up or herbicide on it. My beds got over taken by grass so this year I used grow bags. At my age they might be easier for me.

I have NO idea why someone would give you a thumbs down. 🤷🏼♀️ They just need to move on. I did 5 gal container buckets this year, just waiting for them to look ready!
My potatoes this year had some eyes growing too, as well as the seed potato did not rot often. However, we used leftover sprouted potatoes from last year. The potatoes did get hit with frost twice, so maybe that’s partially why? We follow the Back to Eden method, and always have volunteer plants coming up from some we accidentally left behind! I live in Pennsylvania.
Be good to see what you mean by storing potatoes diced up etc I’ve pull3d up 3x30litre buckets of potatoes so not sure how much in weight that is but it’s the best harvest I’ve had for a number of years. Looks a good harvest there and as you say possibly could of stayed in longer but if you’ve got ideas to grow peas go for it cheers 🍻
I'm pretty sure I have a video already on potatoes O'Brien, and noni don't have a video on Zucchini pineapple, but if I get more harvested I'll may do more
Ive been told that growing potatoes in a container is much much easier to keep and harvest...plus you got a chance to rotate the soil. You might want to give it a try next year.. God bless!
Great harvest 🥔🥔🥔 our main crop potatoes King Edwards variety are due to-be harvested In about 20 days. Thanks for sharing love your little trolley truck, so handy🥘😎
First time growing potatoes this year and I got maybe two or there per plant. I'm going to check out the method you prefer. Jess from Roots and Refuge has a method I really liked.
I’m interested in the freezing. Often a five pound bag ends up going bad. If I could freeze some it would save me the smell! Especially in summer with no proper storage
Yanno, even though you said it was early, they don't look to bad to me, decent size , and big ole Potato's are super hard to cut anyways, so I feel like you did good :)
This is a reputable canner. You can be sure that she will adhere to the safety guidelines and be able to answer questions for you. The guidelines can make things repetitive in canning, but the safety of your family and friends are of utmost importance. ua-cam.com/video/lggFEG4eRNs/v-deo.html
Here in this area of wv the most common type planted is Kenn beck. We usually cut the seed potatoes into chunks with each chunk having an eye and plant them eye up. Our potatoes were a little small but we still got a 5 to 1 harvest. (5lb harvest to 1lb seed). And we didn’t get to Hill or weed them this year. (Health issues in the family). The Kenny Beck might not be right for your climate. From the looks of it I believe that you had a decent harvest though. Just keep experimenting. To the “hired help” I saw your red T-shirt in one of the canning videos and it told me who you were, I just wanted to ask “how far?” Brother. Lol
That 1870's Homestead lol You had an Airborne shirt on in one of the earlier videos. Once upon a time I was airborne long range recon, so the shirt caught my attention. Lol
I laugh when i watch ppl harvest potatoes... on you tube.... and they miss one... and i scream and point at my monitor. lol . I grow potatoes in 5 gal buckets and just dump them out (in a cement mixing tub) when ready.... no tools... cept my (son's) hands. ;) Plus i have never ordered a seed potato. I just keep some back from the grocery store and let them chit in pots of dry potting soil in the house. They are busting sprouts thru the surface so I am ready to plant my Christmas Potatoes on my concrete patio now.
I’d love more info too. This was my first year growing Red Viking potatoes. These plants look like they’re holding on as well. Should I pull them? Maybe I’ll try pulling a plant.
The longer you let them go the bigger the potatoes will get. Red potatoes will grow off the main stem so if you plant them deep, then fill as they grow, in you will get more and more potatoes. Kennebecs are not like that. If you plant them they will grow off he main seed potato and that's it. When first planted, a good organic high nitrogen like a 15.5.5 is good then once you have good foliage ( 10 to 12 inches) you want to go with 5.15.10 or something similar to grow big spuds Every 2 or 3 weeks. I have seen 5 20 15 which is good too. Just me others may have different ideas.
I pulled my potatoes early because they were soooo slow too.. and out of 5 pounds of kennebecs, cut into about 54 pieces, i ended up with 21 quarts of canned potatoes, and a few pounds to eat fresh. The skin was very thin and some were TINY but i dont regret a thing :) like you said, something else is more important! I replanted my beds with beans and a variety of greens. I’d love more info on how you do your O’Brien potatoes
Strange Year. Do not know what zone you are in but it looks like you have the same anomaly I had this year. My season started off weird by late sprouting out of the ground. Some are still just now sprouting. Lower yield, smaller tubers and finding solid seed potatoes for some odd reason. We are in zone 5 to 5b and have been mostly in a drought this year and it has been HOT. We are entering the bottom of the Grand Solar Minimum which may be affecting growth, harvest and yields. I have one new bed where I and testing out just placing the green tops and any old seed potatoes right back under the mulch and soil to compost over the winter or re-grow. Paul and I have talked about this and he has never seen what I am experiencing and yes... Paul harvests and plants potatoes at the same time, they winter over. I have one bed yet to harvest that I planted and let them winter over. Early Potatoes can be planted in the fall and winter over, but Late season Potatoes for Harvest in Sept/Oct should be planted later. Peace.
Farmers suffer from dementia at a lower rate than the average person due to their constant learning. My grandpa a farmer always said the more you know, the more you know you don't know.
Hello from Ireland! I'm just wondering if you ever get potato blight? I grew my potatoes using the Ruth Stout method. Unfortunately we have had perfect conditions for blight this week so I had to cut down all the foliage and we harvested most of the main crop potatoes too soon so they won't store for long. My real question is do I have to dispose of the stray/hay I used to bank up the potatoes or can I use it in the compost bin or dig it into the soil? I'm a newbie gardener so don't know a lot. Thanks for your videos I am really enjoying all of them.
Lovely harvest nonetheless , we have tried to grow potatoes here in our balcony but always failed , it's just too warm here , no winter season and a shaded garden at that .
@@1870s Yes I have seen them but unfortunately my garden structure is such that it won't work for me , sun comes in at an angle . Do watch on my you tube channel to get a better understanding 🙏.
Probably due to water stress? If they don't have enough water they might be sending out eyes to grow to get more moisture. It's also been really warm early which may have stimulated them to produce eyes.
I don’t know Rachel, we normally do earth bed potatoes and to well with that. This year we did bucket planting which we will definitely NOT do again as the buckets get too hot with the summer heat. Just possibly our season was so hot this summer that maybe that had something to do with that. The potatoes we got were small like yours also. Not a total loss, but not worth the effort. Blessings
Thanks for the video. I have a question maybe u can answer for me. I dug up my kennebecs last weekend and none were green. A few days later they turned green. At first I thought that I sunburned them because I had them out on the deck for a day in the sun in a bowl. However, even the ones at the bottom of the bowl turned green. Also, not all of them turned green- maybe about half did. Also, they turned green over a few days time after I brought them in the house. So we can’t eat half of them now. Here’s my question: can I use the green ones as seed potatoes or will the toxins from the green skin cause any plants they grow to have toxins? One other question... would leaving them in the sun for a day cause them to turn? Or is it like u were thinking that maybe it’s just something kennebecs do? I always enjoy your videos! Keep up the good work and take care!
Yes they can't be exposed to sun for any length of time, best to harvest in morning or evening. I wouldnt believe that using them as seed potatoes would cause any problem at all but do your own research, since I've never done it. Definitely do not eat green potatoes
That 1870's Homestead for some reason my phone won’t open your entire reply so I can only read the first part, but I get the gist of it... you’re thinking it should be ok. BTW... just to reiterate, some turned green even though they hadn’t seen the sun. Thanks for taking the time to reply! HAPPY HARVESTING!!
I believe Kennebec potatoes are determinate potatoes and thus don't benefit much from adding additional soil. One article I read said they were determinate.
That jumper is the cutest thing! Love the open back style 😅 do you happen to know where you got yours from? Awesome harvest btw, I’m also waiting patiently for my plants to die back so I can get those potatoes out. It’s my first time so I’m hoping for a good one 🤞🏼
Some potatoes only grow under ground. Others will grow up the stem. Kennebecs will only grow off the seed potato. Red potatoes will grow up the stems and in the air. Thanks for this though, I enjoy your vids.
I should have been clearer. I mean they do not grow off the stem as others. Kennebecs will only grow off the roots of the seed potato or around them. Others wil grow up the stem if you fill in around them as they grow.

Great harvest 🥔🥔🥔 our main crop potatoes King Edwards variety are due to-be harvested
In about 20 days. Thanks for sharing love your little trolley truck, so handy🥘😎
Have fun Harvesting!
I just want to know where you find you bib overalls and who makes them.
nice harvest
You guys make me laugh, can't wait for a new video.
First time here, video pop into suggestion. Gonna subscribe, hope you two always work this well together.
You seem like nice folks. 😇
So happy you found us
First time growing potatoes this year and I got maybe two or there per plant.
Would love to see you can and freeze your potatoes.
I would also love to see how you put together the bags for the freezer.
This is a reputable canner. You can be sure that she will adhere to the safety guidelines and be able to answer questions for you. The guidelines can make things repetitive in canning, but the safety of your family and friends are of utmost importance.

Gretchen Alawneh me too! I want to try those potatoes!
Great video as always friend my potatoes are not doing to good in this heat and we have been getting to much rain.
great potato harvest!!!
Thank you
That 1870's Homestead your soil looks like black gold!
Lol
I gave no idea which red t-shirt your referring to
That 1870's Homestead lol You had an Airborne shirt on in one of the earlier videos.
Lol, that's funny
Amazing only 5 years you do awesome. Do you have any Ruth stout potato videos?
I have an entire playlist on it
I pulled my potatoes early because they were soooo slow too.. and out of 5 pounds of kennebecs, cut into about 54 pieces, i ended up with 21 quarts of canned potatoes, and a few pounds to eat fresh. The skin was very thin and some were TINY but i dont regret a thing :) like you said, something else is more important! I replanted my beds with beans and a variety of greens.
I’d love more info on how you do your O’Brien potatoes
That's awesome, I will be putting out a video when I get to processing them
That 1870's Homestead Great! I look forward to it! :)
Nice harvest! I'm trying Ruth Stout method this year. 🤞
We tried Ruth Stout as well. We will find out the results very soon!
Peace.
Good to here I'm not alone, I guess we will be ok since we plan on processing the majority but it was definitely a weird harvest
My dad used to send us kids into the patch with sticks to wack the plants down ....so they'd die off,lol then a few days later we'd harvest them.
Fun memories
Farmers suffer from dementia at a lower rate than the average person due to their constant learning. My grandpa a farmer always said the more you know, the more you know you don't know.
Olá i'm for Brasil . Love your vídeos. Very very Good. . You married is Santa-Claus? 🎅 kisses friends.
Great job quys!
Thank you
Debbie here......Please show us the process of o brien potatoes? I grew potatoes for the first time this year
Ok will do
Do you have to skin potatoes in order to can them? I like the skins, plus they have so many vitamins and minerals.
Yes skins have to be peeled for safe canning
Hello from Ireland! I'm just wondering if you ever get potato blight? I grew my potatoes using the Ruth Stout method. Unfortunately we have had perfect conditions for blight this week so I had to cut down all the foliage and we harvested most of the main crop potatoes too soon so they won't store for long. My real question is do I have to dispose of the stray/hay I used to bank up the potatoes or can I use it in the compost bin or dig it into the soil? I'm a newbie gardener so don't know a lot. Thanks for your videos I am really enjoying all of them.
I haven't yet, but know to expect it eventually
I love your videos
Lovely harvest nonetheless , we have tried to grow potatoes here in our balcony but always failed , it's just too warm here , no winter season and a shaded garden at that .
Have you seen the GreenStalk planters, I think they would be amazing for you balcony Gardener's!!
I bet you are right
You had a great harvest! Couldn't help but notice the cute outfit you were wearing can I have the details on where you purchased it please.
I purchased from Prana
What is the jumper you are wearing? Super cute!
Blessings
Yes I think the season oddities definitely played a roll
I mean, it’s still a harvest 🤷🏻♀️. Not amazing but not terrible!
That jumper is the cutest thing! Love the open back style 😅 do you happen to know where you got yours from? Awesome harvest btw, I’m also waiting patiently for my plants to die back so I can get those potatoes out. It’s my first time so I’m hoping for a good one 🤞🏼
It's from Prana
It's also 90$...dangg😵
Some potatoes only grow under ground. Others will grow up the stem. Kennebecs will only grow off the seed potato. Red potatoes will grow up the stems and in the air. Thanks for this though, I enjoy your vids.
I should have been clearer. I mean they do not grow off the stem as others. Kennebecs will only grow off the roots of the seed potato or around them. Others wil grow up the stem if you fill in around them as they grow.
Yes I understood, I just learned this this year from Living Traditions homestead.
It's amazing that y'all can calmly teach each other things and truly enjoy each other's company ❤️
What a most glorious beard 😎
Peas are more important than potatoes? Never! 😂
