Who ever made that thumbnail deserves a raise.
Casey, you make the best, most evidence-driven, and most entertaining Da Vinci Resolve tutorials on UA-cam. I'm very grateful for all you've taught me. Thank you for all of the time, energy, and attention you invested in your videos so that the rest of us can benefit from your knowledge and experience!
The settings video we've been waiting for! Thanks! I can't wait to learn Resolve!
Casey, I have spent the last 2 days trying to determine how to store my proxy files as they have completely bogged down my hard drive....then your video popped up! Thank you so much! All of your videos make Resolve so much easier and your description of the working folders was something I couldn't find anywhere else. Honestly, I rarely look at any other Resolve videos anymore because you teach the way I learn.
hell yeah Faris is back baby!!
Thanks Casey, extremely helpful and easy to understand based on your style of explanation- keep it up!
The thumbnail alone made me want to watch this video
You are by far the best guide for this. I keep having trouble with this retched software, but you manage to make it simple to follow along.
What happened now? I had 18. The Cache folder ballooned to 600GB. Yes, in one session, it filled up my drive to where everything crashed. I had 2GB left free. This is an editing rig, with nothing else on it, and it crashed. BAD. So bad, that now my Davinci Resolve is back to a 17....
All the settings crapped out. So I had to go through everything, redo my preferences. So anyone that edits, this is the guy to follow.
This is the most important video I've ever watched about resolve. Thank you for posting this!
Casey, this tutorial is so important and I've been searching for exactly what you have presented here. Understanding and beginning every project correctly starts with proper settings! Thanks again and keep the videos coming!
13:30 - "Make sure you set that to a drive that has lots of free space". That got me wondering, so I checked my Media Storage Location and it's sitting at 550GB right now. OUCH. Time for a purge!
This came one day too late for me though, as just yesterday I went through the Resolve manual and read up on every one of the settings as there were several there that I realized that I had no idea what they were! Some definitely have pretty cryptic names in the UI.
that thumbnail is brilliant
I think I've been using Resolve wrong for a year until I got to this video! Thank you very much!
That thumbnail 😂

I like, Casey, your philosophy; be bold enough to pretend you know what you don't know, and figure it out later along the way :)
That unfortunately does happen from time to time haha.
This man actually went in depht with everything, I loved that.
This is pure GOLD!! Thank you very much!
Great video, thanks. So important, nothing worse than getting halfway through a project to discover you screwed your settings.
ain't nobody got time for that! I love it! Excellent instructional video dude.
I've used alot of your tutorials, thanks!
Very usefull!! Thank you so much!
Thank you for this tutorial. Subscribed!!!!
I like these kinds of thorough explain-every-option kind of thing. It would be great if you can make these for certain tools or nodes, like the Planar Transform node. Go through and explain what every option does for that node. That would be useful.
Thank you very much for an and clear tutoriel
starting to learn resolve again....thank you
I was preferably using optimized media over proxies because that's what I learned a few years ago, but will switch to proxies now since Casey's recommendation. Lots of good info in here
Love your videos, I learn so much, thank you!! Unrelated question, when I output to a second monitor with video cleanfeed, the image has lots of banding, what must I do to get rid of it?
Very Useful.
Very, very, very useful 😊😊
Very nice video, thank you for your time and explanation
Thank you very much man, seriously you helped a lot i started from 0 to 10.
Thanks again,,,big help
very helpful. ty!
Thank you for reading the comments asking for "MORE ON SETTINGS!!!" on the previous "tutorial video for noobs". great going on listening to your audience, kudos!!! :)
Wow...👌 that thumbnail killed me
An excellent video. Especially for us noobs.👶 After reading a few comments, I went back and checked out the thumbnail & agree. It's a classic. I use Canva but understand a screenshot in Davinci can do the tricks even better. I think there was a clip on that.
Thanks for the video Bro.
If I’ve watched this earlier I wouldn’t be chasing the best buy laptop with a RTX card.
Great tutorial as always.
good job
and thanks
Great video - I have been watching you and learning for a month or so now and actually have started a screen saver with movement(animation) for windows. My issue is when I render my memory jumps to 84% usage and never goes back until I show off resolve - I have a new system I-7 10700K with 64Gb of Ram. Is the high memory usage normal? Would adding a GPU help? Thanks! Keep up the awesome Videos!!
Thanks!
Casey. Love your stuff plus with Daria. Everything is geared toward UA-cam posting. Would you be able to make something for exporting to Instagram ?
Render settings plus color space etc. i tried all the settings to no shift gamma to ig uploads but it keeps happening. In any case. Thanks for everything
I'm number 500! Great really helpful vid even though I have your course! Thanks!
I think I am all set...🤪. Great stuff as always
thank you Casey! one thing Im still not sure is if my clips are 4k can I set my timeline to 1920x1080 so it plays better and export in 4k? or this dosent make sense :)
I have seen this some where before but Im not sure if doing right, thanks!
Clever thumbnail
I just have to know, what mouse cursor halo are you using in this video? I have been looking for one just like this for my windows 10 pc and can't find anything like what you are using. Thank you so very much for this video as well, I love your style, personality and the way you break down complex information. You Rock!
If I ever have a very public "special thanks" and credit speech when accepting an award (one can dream!😤) Casey F WILL BE #1, after my wife n mom of course😆 Amazing. Thank you so much!
great video man well so far anyway. Im at the 5:08 mark and you have talked about maybe not using optimised media since you can now use proxies, so can the optimised media be disabled and just use proxies?
Now this one had a good thumbnail
thanks casey!
Thanks for not having any music on this one. Awesome!
You´re fun 👍😎
what could be code error -59 ??
I've already downloaded the last drive from Nvidia Studio Driver and Game Ready Driver and I always get this error, until last week everything was working perfect, I don't know what else to do.
I've always used OpenCL and never had any problems.
Thank you for the video. Quick question. So I use version 16 still. At this point is it worth it to switch to 17?
Can i set the project settings to automatic so it will match the settings of the first video i import? final cut has this option
Yo. Thanks for this i have an option for ProRes as proxies and i am using the M1 iMac. Would you suggest to be best balance for speed and quality?
Is it possible to save the video and audio tracks and import them to another timeline? cause i have a custom named tracks with settings tweaked on them and anytime i open a new timeline i would like the same tracks with the settings i adjusted to appear.
That's a lot of stuff, dude. Good job explaining it all. I have several databases, and I want to use the same project settings presets from DB to DB, how can I do that?
Noti ganggggg
Hey Casey. In terms of the "working folders" portion, the software is not letting me move the Cacheclip folder to another location. I am trying to move it to my external hard drive and it is not letting me move it. What should I do?
How do I make resolve stop using the last remaining 12gb on my OS main drive? I installed it to an extra drive and changed the default folders all to be in the extra drive but it still keeps eating space randomly. I also have crashes happen too often and I'm unsure how to resolve it. The "glitch' FX is impossible to use because it wont render without crashing, even a five second clip. Would upgrading to studio resolve (no pun intended) a lot of these issues possibly? I'm scared to try 🤔
Why doesn't things I edit in the edit page such as image rotation show up in Fusion?
great video !
What do you mean when you change out your proxy before you render ?
It will automatically swap back to the high res while rendering (by default) so you don't re-convert the low res proxies and end up with a potato.
Beginner, ever time i do the same commands you do it resolves (17) looks is some other way so i get lost first thing, for instance i drag a movie down to the timeline its sitting out in the middle instead of to the left side, no way to move it over, very confusion for a newbie.
Hello I am new to this software, and I use it for basic color grading for stock footage. I am facing an issue that after rendering/delivery of final video, it's choppy/Stuttering, which was not the case in the original video.
I keep the fps @24 though the original footage is 30fps. Still I am getting a choppy final video, it's not smooth. Please help
I need help im having alot issues with my ultra wide settings
any solution to fix UI in windows 11 is like all big and can't find solution
Hi Casey thank you for making this kind of stuff....but I am making a trailer of one movie for Instagram reel....but the audio is not working in my davinci can you make a video on this...it would really be helpful...tysm
Thanks for the video. So there is really absolutely no reason using optimized media instead of proxy files?
Can you recommend a desktop Pc for davinci, a smooth workflow ? ty sir
Excellent, Casey. As usual! :)
I'd love some info on how to manage proxies and optimized media. What's the best way to get rid of them once a project nears completion?
🐨Gday Peter, Casey, folks. 4 minutes into this essential doco & I am thinking the same thing. Proxies seem like a good thing then I hear "Switch out your proxies before you render." How? If you don't does your render lack resolution? Sounds like a newby trap to me. Thanks in advance. 🙏
Casey replied to Larry: It will automatically swap back to the high res while rendering (by default) so you don't re-convert the low res proxies and end up with a potato. Chips anyone? 🍟
I was really hoping to learn how i can keep the full quality of my video, but get it to playbackat a lower quality while editing so it doesn't overload my computer, how can I do that?
This is the video I needed two years ago lol. Does anyone know how to get windows to remember the previous screen size and position when opening resolve?
(I use a 47 inch wide screen and don’t need resolve filled edge to edge on the monitor but it always opens up maximized)
In the Workspace menu Full Screen Window may be checked. I believe you can either uncheck it, or a few selections lower is Reset UI Layout, which should... well... reset the user interface layout.
MS power toys
Set the size you want and close it while holding CTRL
i have 300 clips of vids from holiday. they are 24, 30 and 60fps. How do i handle that? I want to edit them all together.
hey Casey, really enjoy your content here. i do have a question when using Davinci resolve, when i try to rotate a clip in my timeline, somehow the video is distorted as i rotate it. if i rotate my 16:9 portrait clip by 90 degrees, the end result looks more like a 3:2 portrait. i'm really confused about what happened and if there was a setting somewhere i need to change. If you can shed some light, that'll be awesome!
Maybe from 7:40 on.
How do you use proxy in the timeline? you should of explained that when you explained what each proxy setting works. You said not to use optimized media because proxy does it better but how do we use proxy while editing?
I feel like I am all set :)
Thank you...and I laughed at the jokes as well
Great video. Are you really using a GTX 1070ti?
how & where do you save things that you use for every video IE...Call to Action. thx vinny
You might wanna try Power Bins within Resolve. On your top menu, click on View, and find Power Bins (it's around the bottom of the dropdown menu). Once you have that switched on, it'll appear in your Media Pool. Power Bins allow you to place media that you'll be using across multiple projects, as long as it's within the same database. You can even create bins to help you organise your files. However, take note you'll need to keep the files on the same directory.
Everything is confusing until you make it unconfusing ✅️
My vinci resolve is nuts bro, how to reset it back to default sir
When you start the program there is no preference setting button below! Each time a system preference is set and saved the program closes? I'll try the middle of your video but you are out of order for a new person!!!-- IT does not read my GPU? I can't do anything? Otherwise a great video! I just am stuck!
Good content. Once you get into bigger projects, these settings become a real bottleneck!
Wait, what is illegal color?
Came here cause of that thumbnail haha
Better then most but still would like an overview of every setting...
Im guessing this doesn’t affect OS X users?
Not dry.. great video. (as usual). But I am still confused .
Why use Preferences Media Storage for cache and images when you have already set up Project Settings Working Folders for cache and images etc.
Or are they different caches and images. Can you help this nerd get the logic clearer?
06:15 Unless you have no GPU use CUDA not auto. also lower fusion cache all the way if you dont use fusion. It will make the other pages run smoother

At 06:58 you discuss briefly "Motion range" (along with the other settings "Retime process" & "Motion estimation mode"). You state that I "can always change these for each individual clip". I have NEVER found any other place to change "Motion range", though I can change the other settings ("Retime process" & "Motion estimation mode") elsewhere. I believe I understand the affect of "Motion Range" to be the amount of pixel movement between two frames, if I choose "small" then DR-18 just uses small changes in pixel location to make the interpolated new frame and should process this faster than the "Larger" choice. Is this sounding about correct?
I frequently use Optical Flow w Speed Warp, yet 'Speed Warp' is NOT and option at 06:58, any idea why?
I subscribed long ago and have viewed repeatedly many of your vids, including some that have involved some extensive testing (e.g. resolution compare for YT). I am hoping to cajole you (via commentary plaudits) to do a comprehensive testing video of Optical Flow and/or a much more detailed/in-depth of the "Frame Interpolation" dialogue box in Project Settings / Master Settings.
Thanks all.
Is it possible to change timeline resolution to 2160 x 3840 in free version? I tried key in 3840 but only 384 accepted
Probably not.. The max width is 3840 and max height is 2160 in the free version. So anything more than 2160 will not be accepted.
@@wporchard thank you for the info
Casey 2 things: 1.) you and all should all say exactly what Version of DR you are using to do the tutorial. 2.) you forgot the very first important Project Setting (Presets). PLZ make or just referee to a follow up Tutorial on Presets are developed and used. Another great DR 17.3 Tutorial, Thanks.
its a pity that you just read the most of the entries.. i need to see what everything does... is there a manual for that?
You can try the Black Magic Design site for training docs: www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/training
I've been enthusiastically following your tutorials and telling others about them. Now, after updating my project settings as per your tutorial, all my clips have a big watermark in white with Da Vinci Resolve Studio on them! Obviously, it means I have to unlock them with a Studio password, but I never installed Studio, only the free version. I am up to date with 18.01. What in God's name have done?? 😬
Hey Casey, show us how we can add emojis in text.
Too bad there's not a setting for default timeline framerate. I NEVER use 24fps, and it's just wasted time to constantly be changing that for every project.
You can create a project preset that will be the default whenever you create a new project. First, in project settings set all the settings you commonly use. Once you're done, go to Presets, and Save As. Give it a title. Next, right click on the new preset and select Save As User Default Config.

Just wish it would not be all a dark letters on a black background - I can hardly see what it going on. And yes, I heard the "wonderful " reasons why a complete background is Oh-So-Cool!! but it is none the less just a nuisance.
