Bono was just starting to loose his voice, and it would get worse around/after Pop. Unsurprising after the wild, unhinged, crazy ZooTv/Zooropa tour. Tragic, but still a beautiful version. From the Passengers Miss Sarajevo single. Bottoms was kick ass great too!
This song saved U2, after Edge divorce, Techno and INXS influence and chaotic Rattle and Hum, they wanted to split, but ONE showed them how respecting differences they still could be ONE band.
Yep. They were in Hansa Studios beating their heads against the wall trying to find their new sound. Wasn’t going well at all. Meanwhile, Edge is over in the corner of the studio playing around with a second bridge/riff of what would eventually become Mysterious Ways. That riff catches the ear of Daniel Lanois. He isolates it. The rest of the band on the other side of the studio hear it and instantly knew that was it. They immediately dropped what they were doing and subsequently followed him down the path that would eventually become One. The bones of the song were done within 30 minutes. Crazy. The way that happened is seemingly so cliché, it almost seems made up. But its not. Thats the advantage of doing these sorts of things in the studio. Its all recorded. As an aside, most U2 fans know that story fairly well. But what a lot of U2 fans don’t know is the exact same thing happened after Pop. They were all set to break up if ATYCLB tanked. Fortunately Beautiful Day saved them that time around. The rest is history.
@ObamaFromKenya You won’t get an argument out of me. In the interest of full disclosure, I have been a massive fan since I heard Bad on the radio in 1984. I love their work in the 80s and 90s. I’ve seen most bands and big acts at/near their heyday(yes.. I’m old😂). And along with Queen and Pink Floyd, they are the best live band I’ve ever seen. Joshua Tree and ZooTv tours were jaw-dropping. I only say that to provide context for what I’m about to say.. At this point everything they’re doing now is damaging their legacy. As a lifetime fan, it pains me to say that. But it’s true. The Vegas Sphere residency was an unbelievably lucrative financial success. For all parties involved. But the actual performance? It was disastrous. So seeing them struggle so mightily (particularly Bono with the vocal) is really tough to witness. After seeing them here in Seattle in 2017, I decided to never see them again because I don’t want to remember them like that.

Growing up in Philly watching those iconic Sixers/Celtics matchups in the late 70s/80s was next level. Down in Philly it was at the Spectrum. Two great cities and venues. Even though the newer venues are objectively better in every measurable way, there’s some sort of magic missing compared to those old places. Anyways, back to the main topic.. I saw them later on in the ZooTV tour once they converted to outdoor stadiums at the old Veterans Stadium in Philly. To say it was spectacular undersells it. There are moments in our lives where we don’t truly understand the legendary nature of what we’re watching as we are watching it and only truly appreciate it in retrospect. Fortunately this isn’t one of those times for me. I knew what I was watching was history being made. As you said, even they couldn’t achieve that level again after that tour was over. Don’t get me wrong, the shows were still pretty good through 360° tour(although, despite the musicianship still being fantastic during Elevation Tour, by the time I saw them in Philly on that tour Bono‘s voice was shot.. come to find out he had the vocal cord polyps he just ignored and basically permanently ruined his voice by the end of the tour which is why he started singing so much differently on every subsequent tour). But I was genuinely surprised by much they lost off their fastball between 360° and Joshua Tree 2017. I was hoping the extended layoff during covid would have helped his voice to recover a bit. But after seeing a few Sphere clips, somehow it got even worse. I gotta be honest about this.. I find his vocal issues to be bizarre. He can still hit the notes. For the most part his range is fairly close to where it was when he was younger. Granted, he doesn’t have the power anymore. Which is fairly normal for aging vocalists. But his pitch and timbre are absolutely horrendous. And its not like he’s that old. Robert Smith of The Cure and Simon Le Bon of Duran Duran are the same age and they sound great. Hell Paul McCartney sounded great until he was like 77. So how terrible he sounds almost feels like it’s a product of laziness or indifference on his part. I will say that I suspect there is a factor that affected their performances in Vegas that I haven’t heard anyone else mention.. To my best recollection, the Sphere residency is the first time since the 1987 Joshua Tree tour that the stage design didn’t allow them to incorporate mingling into the crowd like every other tour since Joshua Tree. So I think they had a really hard time connecting because it had been so long since they were forced to try to do that. Anyways, I’m rambling now. I could go on about this type of stuff all night. So hopefully some of that made sense😂
