I remember an interview with the Edge about the recording of this song. He said Cash, who was a big man at 6'2", walked into the studio, resplendent in all black, with the presence of Mount Rushmore and that he never felt more in awe of another artist. And all that Cash asked in return was their permission to record their song "One" for one of his American Recordings albums. Edge said it was perhaps one of just 3 times in all the years he's known Bono where the singer was struck speechless.
I'm an avid fan, love them and this song is one that struck me most, no matter how we wander out of our life, God is always waiting for us and He won't give up on us till we make a turn and He welcome us with both hands. God bless everyone in this pandemic times.
Jay amazing gear, as in pedals, vox and fender amps. He has a great ear and vision for his tone, and technical timing. One of the pioneers of the modern guitar sound, I would say the founding father
not many youth know this, but in the early 90s, u2 used to be considered by my generation the greatest band on earth. this song and version are good examples why.
Honestly... if Bono hadn't edged {pun intended} himself into the lead vocalist roll... the Edge would've been the lead singer in U2 ---> a Three Piece band.
higher ground cover and fire cover and knock me down are all great pepper songs, under the bridge i didnt like. are you reborn christian, buddhist or what?
@goldenhourkodak Yes. I understand that. I know their discography backwards and forwards. I’ve been a fan of this band since I heard Bad on the radio in 1984. But this really isn’t even a complicated issue... The *only* reason they were asked to do this is to pay tribute to Johnny Cash following his death. On the night you’re paying tribute to an all-time legend, you don’t change the words he sang on Zooropa because of one’s own political biases and beliefs. It’s disrespectful. It’s megalomaniacal. It’s unbelievably selfish and self-centered.
u2 never die..the u2 fans and u2 live 4 ever on world..my daughter she have 7 years and love u2,,,genaration of u2 band,,love you boys..paul from portugal
This is a great post! Edge's Del Shannon style backing vocals really add a nice dimension to the song. U2 should do this song in concert more often. Thanks for putting this up.
This was probably the first Johnny Cash song I had heard, back when I was still in High School, I was shocked how wise and mature Johnny Cash's voice was, it led me to buy all of his american albums. I haven't heard this version before and i'm a huge U2 fan.
I was 17 when I first heard this song when it first came out. It captivated me so much I learned all I could about it, and a few months later I left home at 17 and went to Eastern Europe. Best thing I ever did. Changed the course of my life for the better.
Now if only the album version had Edge's backing vocals on it... I love the song as sung by Johnny Cash (and Bono!), but that little vocal part would make it even better.
I think there's a hit song from the 60's with the same falsettosong but the word "wonder" instead of wandering. But the similarity is so obvious that U2 might have been forced to pay the copyrightholder for using the lyrics. Or maybe someone in the band got the idea while rehearsing for this performance.
+Kyle Richard Hudson can you share how you happen to know that factoid? I'm a long-time fan of U2 and I've seen an obscene number of interviews and read even more books and interviews, but I had no idea that this backing vocal of Edge's almost made it onto the original record. I'd love to know where you learned that, this kind of thing is fascinating. I assumed this was an arrangement they created to alter the song and make it a little less obvious that Johnny Cash wasn't singing.
yes i agree, the Edges backing vocal really makes the song much better than the studio version was. This version is a million times better than the album and i think the Edge's vocal is a big reason
Hands up this is an Insanely good song written by the worlds greatest ever band , can’t believe this is the only time they performed it live , it’s so good then again do u2 ever perform badly?
That's the thing....occasionally I'll listen to a band sing something live. But as good as U2 is in a recording they are that good and pretty much better than that when they play live....like, Every Time they play live. They deserve the place they've earned in legend. I'm in awe of them.
Not the only time they performed it live. I was at the Vanderbilt U2:360 show and they did a shortened version of it. Bono tried his best impression of Johnny, he asked for forgiveness from Johnny after finishing it. ua-cam.com/video/dAdUEgZybZw/v-deo.htmlsi=FwLA_NMBiIaluyaE
@@Cyorke What a great show.. Maybe the only thing that upstaged the surprise of Wanderer was the blind gentleman who played guitar on All I Want is You. My favorite U2 live experience with POPMART Memphis close behind.

I still listen to Zooropa whenever my ears need some sonic beauty & feedback. Thanks for an Irish rock group who taught me the three chords & the truth.
Yeah, they have a way of making you feel like they're speaking right to you. There's a certain aura that surrounds them and it's unforgettable. I was lucky to get tickets way back pre-cyber age by literally standing in line, but it was so worth it. Saw Joshua Tree tour in Vancouver in the early/mid-80's and followed them for years after that. If you asked me today what band I wish I could see again, it wouldn't be Hendrix, it wouldn't be the Beatles, etc. It would be U2.

Johnny Cash is a legend

I love that fact that Edge can pull out really futuristic sound using most country-looking guitar ever

How DOES Edge get those sounds ?

Rhetorical question but thanks Jos - Edge get's so much stick for his playing but is indeed the master of understated guitar work.

When you see U2 in concert, you're not just hearing music, it's an entire spiritual experience.

First discovered them in 1981 and still listening and amazed to this day
They had the undisputed heavy weight title of greatest band on earth from 1983-1993.
The Young generations are totally ignorant of that , they consume just trash
