STP is a fairly underrated band of the 1990s, they had so many hits and was a big part of what I heard on the radio growing up. They draw from many influences from smooth jazz to psychadelic to grunge to pure rock, amazing succinct but explorative. Scott Weiland was a modern rock star, with the highs and the lows, may he rest in peace. The guitarist and bassist are brothers and the way they work together without exactly following each other works like magic. The drummer has such perfect touch to amplify the flow of the songs. I miss the 90s!
Honestly Dean is practically the lead instrument of the band, I had no idea growing up but last year I looked at the writing credits. Humble band overall for being such a big part of our lives.
When I was a kid I was never a big fan of this song but it was my mom's favorite. A few days after she died a couple years ago I heard the song on the radio and I damn near broke down crying. Ever since then I try to listen to it at least once every couple months just to remember

Great choice, Geebz! This is one of STP's chillest sings, and the bass is very " goober worthy" 😁 The chord at the beginning is an Em7b5 (022330 for tab geeks) so you were spot on in hearing that b5 dissonance. This CD, the entire album, is what got me into rock music back in the 90's. So when I say it is perfect, and I do say it quite often, I may not be very objective...
Dean DeLeo's guitar playing is a master work of weird chords and voicings and I feel next to Robert's bass playing it's what sets them apart from being a typical power chords rock band.
This song holds a very special place in my Soundtrack of Life. When this song came out, I was in a phase of only listening to rap. Then this song was used on the trailer for the movie The Crow. And it hit me right where I needed it to help me realize that I could listening to more than one genre of music. Never looked back and now I enjoy a little bit of everything.

Crazy I heard this song on the radio on the way home from work at night and I thought this would be a great song for you to decompose, and you did it on the same day. I was just thinking of imagery of Scott driving a red or black 80's model camaro as he's stoned face serious in another place in his head late at night. The opening lyric with the slide just pushes hard the tone of the song.
As a guitarist when you listen to Stone Temple Pilots you think you've pretty much got figured out what's happening through the chord changes. But then you go to play it and it turns out just about every chord he plays is a very unique progression of diminished and augmented and odd notes thrown in and jazz positions. He's waaaay more clever than he gets credit for. It's like if a jazz guitarist really like a Nirvana so he wanted to make a rock band.
in my 20's I decided to start playing bass guitar (after being a rhythm guitar player) and became quite good. My teacher was DeLeo and stp. I knew the first three albums note for note complete on bass. Im 51 now and still use the intricacies that I learned from deleo to deconstruct the shit that is out there today. amazing
Love Deathwish :) Big empty has always been one of my favorite STP songs. When it came out for the Crow soundtrack, it had such a cool and powerful but laid back groove to it, it just grabbed me and drew me in as you said. Great breakdown of it.
With all those grunge and Seattle bands people remember from that time, looking back STP was probably my fave of the period, hard to beat their first two albums. And this being on the Crow sdtrk too, just the feel of that whole thing, really takes me back to the early 90s
Soundtrack of my life: when this was released, I'd shoot pool at Stix a couple nights/week, and this (whole record) would be playing. It was a long time ago, and I sure feel old.
I love the way you are describing the bass line as a telegraph, like it is sending messages. Robert DeLeo is an amazing bassist who crafts these intricate, yet mostly unassuming bass lines in just about every STP song. He is influenced by guys like Jamerson, Entwistle, Prestria, JPJ, and Squier, and in my opinion, his ability to meld the genres of Jazz, Soul, R&B, and Rock into one is like no other.

When this song came out, I was in a phase of only listening to rap. Then this song was used on the trailer for the movie The Crow.
And it hit me right where I needed it to help me realize that I could listening to more than one genre of music. Never looked back and now I enjoy a little bit of everything.
Just got to say thank you for doing this song and touching on the bass. Such an outstanding performance to me!
Oh man throwback to HS days watchin The Crow at the movies n how things added so much to the movie...
This entire album is a masterpiece. Still my fav STP album, Core is 2nd. They remastered those albums for the 25th anniversary reissues. ✌😁🤘
Vinyl?
Dang, man, I remember when I caught you with maybe a thousand followers, and my man's got a play button in the back! Awesome to see, keep it up!
My favorite Stone Temple Pilots song, actually.
Oh man, love this song. Used to cover it in an acoustic duo
Dean DeLeo's guitar tone and chord voicings, and Robert's bass playing, were both HUGE influences on why I started playing guitar and bass
The bassist and the guitarist are brothers. So much chemistry between those two.
I cannot be the only person who low key is more judgey about songs. G, you’ve opened SO many “eyes,” ears about music. I listen to the music first🤷🏻♀️.NOW, after watching these videos, I listen for each 🎸 instrument and it’s like hearing your favorite song for the first time. Aloha🤘🏽🤜🏽🤛🏽
YYYEESSS.!!! What an amazing song, off an amazing soundtrack and an awesome movie... Definitely one of my faves from way bank 👍👍
And...I'm back in the 90s again. Yeww!🥰
My favorite song of theirs.
my dad liked STP... till i made him listen to this album 50000 times when i was a kid
The same for the basse!!
in my 20's I decided to start playing bass guitar (after being a rhythm guitar player) and became quite good. My teacher was DeLeo and stp. I knew the first three albums note for note complete on bass. Im 51 now and still use the intricacies that I learned from deleo to deconstruct the shit that is out there today. amazing
"Its not a good day to be a bad guy" - Eric Draven (The Crow) .. this song plays to the trailer of the crow. Great Movie, Amazing Soundtrack.
This is a great video. Big Empty is such a awesome song.
Love Deathwish :) Big empty has always been one of my favorite STP songs. When it came out for the Crow soundtrack, it had such a cool and powerful but laid back groove to it, it just grabbed me and drew me in as you said. Great breakdown of it.
Oh! I love how you describe the good stuff in songs! I'm with you! 😊👍
Watch their MTV Unplugged performance
With all those grunge and Seattle bands people remember from that time, looking back STP was probably my fave of the period, hard to beat their first two albums. And this being on the Crow sdtrk too, just the feel of that whole thing, really takes me back to the early 90s
The whole album is epic
Just subscribed because you said "I am not Rick Beato"...keep it coming..love it!!!
This song always gives me visions of driving along the Great Ocean Road (Australia) with the top down, wind in the hair with sunnies on.
Cool Book sitting on your desk 👍. Had the pleasure of meeting Patch and talking about rando stuff for 2 hours. The man is a story teller for sure!! Cheers &👌👌
Probably my favourite song, still a great band live. Great wee bit banter about the track. Love it.
The opening chord is Emin7flat5 with no third (minor third being implied by the melodic structure)
Love STP, brings back memories of nearly 30 years ago now. Geebz, I want you to check out Church of the Cosmic Skull. I can't stop listening to them lately.
Hello from chicago-land.. Glad to hear your a "Death Wish coffee" fan. Been a DW fan since 2014.. Its great stuff !!
I never quite got how extraordinary a bass player Robert Deleo is until I watched Rick Beato break down Interstate Love Song.
Even got a chill “alright” in there👌
Aaah Geebz my brother... this is one of my top 5 STP songs...love it. I was starting my Saturday morning to your vid with my cup of coffee and my mood stabilizer meds..😉. This was a great way to start my day...thx brother. Keep rockin'...❤️✌️🍗
