1994 is an epic year for Music. Peral Jam's Vitalogy, Soundgarden's Superunknown, NIN's Downward Spiral, Alice In Chains - Jar of Flies, Beck - Mellow Gold, Beastie Boys - Ill Communication to name a few. An absolutely unprecedented year of album drops.

Scott always wrote his own lyrics. The guy was a poet. His lyrics were always really deep. The man wrote books on the side.

Oh yeah btw the reason why you hear Chester Bennington in this is because Chester was a HUGE STP fan, so much so he even became STP's lead of a while. I believe it was back in 2014 or 15

I bought this album when it came out when I was 16. It was bought with my first paycheck and played it over and over again. It’s been a while since I’ve heard this album. Thanks! This is a timeless album. They don’t make music like this anymore. Great reaction! That’s crazy you said the big empty was the reason people bought this album. That was the case for me. It’s a great tune! The chorus is very powerful

Watching you react to “Still Remains” gave me life. I’ve never met anyone who appreciates the song for what it is… the fact that you said it was your favorite after it was done means the impact of its beauty really hit you. I’ve been listening to this record since I was in middle school a couple years after it was released. 30 years of this being one of the best songs I’ve ever heard and it’s sooo fun seeing someone hear it for the first time. Thanks for sharing with us. I saw them in concert when I was in middle school and fell in love with Scott Weiland after seeing him live… and now this summer I get to see STP perform (rip Scott - he was a rock god). I’m still mourning his death and cannot wait to hear these songs that were the soundtrack to my life live again.

Robert De Leo, the bassist and major songwriter is a very sophisticated musician -- if you dig into the details of the riffs and melodic/harmonic content you can see it. The Beato interview with Robert De Leo is worth it 100%. I'm a new subscriber, love your vibe, keep it going!

I was always hoping someone would react to Blind Melon "Nico". It was released after Shannon Hoon overdosed.
I grew up during this time period. I didn't cry when Kurt Cobain died. I didn't cry when Layne Staley died. But, I cried my ass off in my 1977 Monte Carlo when Shannon Hoon died. Such a beautiful voice/soul.

I discovered the Pilots in late 1992 around the time "Core" came out. I loved the record, and while you could point to similarities evidenced on a few songs, it bummed me out seeing the kind of flak the band took back then from some people quick to dismiss them as Seattle grunge knock-offs. Though a few of the seminal, breakout records by Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice did shortly predate the release of "Core", the Pilots had been a working band four or five years already. The criticism was overblown. To me "Core" was a strong statement, an album that endured, and was rich with suggestion of the brilliance we could expect in future albums (as they would come more into their own). I remember those critical voices being silenced after "Purple" dropped in 1994. Another excellent record, and for those who hadn't yet appreciated it, "Purple" demonstrated that Stone Temple Pilots weren't simply aping the sound of other bands - but were stepping into their own identity, taking more risks, showing a better understanding of what is uniquely them. By the time "Tiny Music..." music came along (1996), despite personal challenges Scott Weiland was wrestling with, there was a brimming confidence and swagger to the album, a fearless embracing of 'pop' sensibilities in the writing & recording of many songs, and loaded with amazing hooks, big choruses and memorable harmonies (the kinds you're constantly humming having stuck to your brain). The fraternal and creative bond between the DeLeo brothers adds something tangible, but not easy to describe, to the songs they write. Of course there are several more albums after "Tiny Music..." (equally worth one's time like the first three) but I've probably spouted-off long enough.

Stone Temple Pilot's Purple is more like Soundgarden's Superunknow and Smashing Pumpkin's Mellon Collie and the Infinate Sadness than Green Day's Dookie. All came out in 1994. Superunknown and Mellon Collie are the true alternate masterpieces in '94. They blew Dookie out of the water and Dookie is a great album. I know Smashing Pumkins won some Grammys for Mellon Collie, and I think Soundgarden would have won some for Superunknown a well.
