Hehe. The backlash for that song was almost entirely from the band. It's a great song, but it was too popular for the band's liking(!) They hated being "the Creep band", so much that, yes, they stopped playing it for a while.
But when I saw them a few years ago, at their spiritual home, the best place in the world, Glastonbury Festival, they played it, with happy faces, and with *gusto*. Jonny Greenwood's guitar was SO beautifully loud, it went through me like a lightning bolt!
What a night that was... another highlight was 'Everything In Its Right Place', a strangely put-together song which kinda signalled their transformation away from being totally guitar-based, and into a wider world...
And 'Weird Fishes/Arpeggi', probably the best example of Radiohead building and building the layers, and creating that weirdly satisfying feeling in your soul

I love this song. I know it's not their greatest, and I'm the first to admit it, but there's something so vulnerable and intimate about this. When they recorded this, Jonny Greenwood thought it was a boring song and wanted to sabotage it with the harsh guitar. I'm glad he did!

To over-simplify, it's like the guitar is adding angst and maybe a touch of bitter to the semi-self-loathing of the lyrics. Or to swing the pendulum in the other direction, it's the subconscious defying the ideology of being less than another.
It hit the scene when I was a teenager and was like the embodiment of that internal teen chaos. Again, uber-over-simplification, and it means something different (and likely similar) to everyone, which is why it got so dang popular. It's so bloody relatable, especially as a teenager in the maelstrom of hormonal upheaval.
Still an absolute favorite, but I almost love the PMJ cover better. Admittedly, that might be because I'm in a different life stage than when Radiohead first released it; and because she scats. #squeeforscatting

I always heard it as someone who was barely hanging on through their pain and longing, and the crunch (yeah, it was an attempt to disrupt the song but the band loved it!), was the moment the singer loses his grip and the power of his loneliness breaks out and overwhelms him.

Man, the progression of emotions was great. "So fucking special" a little smirk, the guitar scratch comes in and the look of shock, the guitar goes off and that look of true satisfaction within the soul. i really love your radiohead videos, they’re my favourite band and this is the song that introduced me to them. of course this is no longer my favourite song, there’s so many others, but it’s still close to my heart. i’d really like it if one day you had a look at some of their lyrics too - they’re pure poetry, just completely beautiful, and one of their strongest areas (which is saying a lot, seeing as all their areas of composition are so strong)

Here to the end and enjoyed all of it. Thanks for continuing to do Radiohead’s amazing catalogue of work. Are you familiar with Talk Talk’s work? Mark Hollis was the lead for the band (sadly passed away in 2019) and their album Spirit of Eden is considered one of the first in the post-rock genre and was also an influence for Radiohead. A good start would be The Rainbow or I Believe In You. Mark had a beautiful melancholy voice and similar style of singing to Thom’s.

Love that you’re diving into the incredible Radiohead! Yes, this was their first US hit, and it’s off their first album, so the sound is very “label involvement” driven, but once they cut those chords (see what I did there?!?), their uniqueness, creativity, and sheer brilliance really blossomed!

I love to watch your decomposing so much, because you focus so often on guitar and bass. I don´t for some reason. I only hear drums and vocals and then some sound around that. Especially bass is something I never actively hear. That is why it is so nice to watch your videos, because I get to discover parts in songs I actually know for years, but haven´t consciously heard certain details. But until this day, I have to actively search for the bass in every song. Don´t know why.
