When Maynard did that “20 second scream” in The Grudge he was 36. When he recorded this he was 55. That’s sort of the overall theme of this song and this album as a whole. Everyone gets older, and as you age you lose some abilities and gain some new ones.
When I was blessed enough to witness this performed live... The entire Colosseum let out an emotional yell of excitement and then was promptly paralyzed by awe. Witnessing 4 humans produce such seemingly “otherworldly” art/beauty will do that to ya. Tool does that a few times each show and it ends up feeling like a religious experience.
"Tears in my eyes, chasing Ponce de Leon's phantom soul Filled with hope, I can taste mythical fountains False hope, perhaps But the truth never got in my way Before now, feel the sting, feeling time bearing down" Perfection

in the 2020 shows he plays it on this huge curved keyboard looking thing behind his kit with mallets...its a new synth addition to his kit on the fear inoculum tour...2019 they played it before the album was released
I was hoping someone pointed out that was Danny on the synth immediately following that. Something I wouldn't believe if I hadn't seen videos of it. I wanna say the only thing Danny can't do is sing just so some video will surface of him showing off outstanding vocals. He's not human.
Just a reminder. Tool songs only get better with repeat listens. I didn't like this song much at first...but there's just so much you don't catch or that isn't apparent in a first listen.
Descending and culling voices were my least favorites on the album, but the more I listen to them the more I realized they were absolute pieces of wonderful sonic art
I mean, 7empest..... Just sayin'.... I actually really like the false ending in this song, it gives it some serious flavor! As far as the album not delivering, I'd have to disagree, this album has helped Carry me through the pandemic, as I've remained working on the front lines the whole time, this album has been my solace. To me, it is absolute ear candy. That being said, there're obviously long stretches where notes go unresolved, and obviously (to some) that's intentional. Of course, there are always going to be haters. Edit: Tool for the win! (If I'm interested enough in the video and analysis to stay one full minute, I'm there until the end, with Geebz, anyway, personally.)
still remember hearing this for the first time, hearing the toms doing one thing, the bass doing another, and then once in a while, they happen to sync up. Stunning choices.
This album is so good it actually makes their whole library better, for me this album is like a key that allowed me to open the door to a deeper understanding of all their music.
What you gotta remember is MJK lays down his vocals at the very end once the instrumentals are completely done. So he's finding pockets. Also Adam has said they've done things at times thinking MJK would sing there then he decides to sing somewhere completely else that throws them off and blows them away essentially. He's unique for sure.
I never really expected i would enjoy just watching someone’s facial expressions while experiencing tool. Upon first getting this album, this song got 3 repeats before completing the album, a first for a tool album for me. It also happened to be the first tool song that my at the time 10 year old would request, and even put on repeat during roadtrips herself.
I feel like tool's metrics and timing force people to grow as listeners. Its not an idle listen. It takes a critical, practiced ear to wrap your senses around just how good thier music us. Tool tought me to be a better consumer of music. It took a while to acquire the ear needed but im so glad i stuck with it
What a beautiful song about getting old.... Some of us are further on the journey than others, but most can relate to the feeling of being long in tooth and soul. [Tool for the win!]
30 years later....they're still that friggin good.......what a band.......the definition of a band...organic and all necessary, no one star, they are all parallel.....what a band....thanks Geebz......keep going with the TooL
The way Danny forshadows what’s about to happen at 25:20 is extremely impressive artistry. I remember specifically the first time I heard that segment my jaw dropped. This song, to me, is one of the most beautiful they’ve written, along with Descending. I think that’s why they played them both first before the album released
I’ve been a Tool fan since I was ten years old. By the time I was 12 Tool became more than a band and became a part of me and my life both musically and personally on so many different levels. I’m 40 now and this song connected with me so deeply. I didn’t watch any of the bootleg recordings of the new songs they played on tour because I wanted to hear the studio versions first with all the amazing production. I took a drive at midnight when the album came out and invincible and decending made me so emotional I had to pull over. I was on a long road up here in the Pacific Northwest so when I pulled over it was quiet and dark, woods surrounding the road, and I listened all the way through the album two more times just laying back in my seat and appreciating the life I have had so far and that Tool was still such a huge part of it
"Beating tired bones , Tripping through remember when Once invincible, Now the armor's wearing thin" This makes me cry every time I don't even know why
The reason it does this for me is because I have always viewed this song as a metaphor of Europe, America and Canada(I live in Canada) and the once strong nations that have their "shields down", the whole album dropping prior to C-19 and the whole syringe theme. I don't recognize Canada anymore and I was born and raised here, our history is being torn down and applauded, this is why I tear up.
@@guywithalltheanswers6942 I worry for you guys down there with the influx of people fleeing democrat states, fear it will change your political landscapes. I am in Alberta, so the most sanity out of Canada, but my Premier is weak compared to your Governor by leaps and bounds
I see you that you “get” this song in the brain. But you you’ll feel this song differently at listens number 10, 50, even 100. You’ll feel it deeper inside than the dissecting, on the surface appreciation you have now. This band needs time to permeate before you actually....... get it on multiple levels. Dudes our age are in for a treat once you add the layers of lyrics and historical references, metaphors, and symbolism. I used to get mental snapshots of Ragnar Lothbrok leading an English raid then growing old and going through the world passing him by (reference to the show). Then, over time It morphed by mirroring my turning 46 and having time and mortality show me who’s boss... It’s a huge world. This song alone. Paint your own details and give it the energy that lights it up for you. We’re over a year in and I still paint in my head differently when jamming to this song it’s a perpetual painting in my head, best I can explain it. Tool is like no other. 🤘❤️
Fear Inoculum is an album that rewards deep and repeated listens. The more times you listen the more deeply it strikes you as you begin to understand how the lyrics instruments and rhythm come together to tell you this story.
The face, the eyes, the twisting, the second guessing... makes all my figuring out the damn tabs worth it in the end... just when you got in a rhythm they made you second guess.. I love it
This song is a battle dude. An old warrior trying to maintain their place on the battlefield but ultimately dying a warrior's death. The inevitable finally catches that warrior but not before they have one last show of their true strength and power. An absolute masterpiece.
Geebz, you have no idea the torture it was to wait 14 years between new Tool albums. Hearing this song was worth it. This entire album is like a masterpiece of Tool doing what Tool does. Couldn’t have been happier with it. I’m excited to beer your thoughts on other tracks from it.
So polished! Been a long-standing fan of Tool (25yrs!) and just saw them a month ago and this was the last song of the show. Slayed it and I’m lucky to have seen them 4 times, Tool FTW!
I was psyched to see that you were listening to this song today. Invincible really strikes a cord for me. I've been a huge tool fan since first hearing sober on the radio back in high school, and this song just seems to reflect where I find myself in life these days. I've also been enjoying your reactions since you first discovered tool, and the fact that this particular song seems to have struck you uniquely resonates with me. tool for the win!
Rock 101 KUFO in Portland, Oregon was the station where I first heard "Sober" back when. That station introduced me to some great bands. It's a right wing talk radio station now. Revelance is subjective if you ask me.
I think you need to listen to some earlier Tool for your next reaction, specifically the songs they recorded with original bassist Paul d'Amour. A few good suggestions would be "Undertow", "Flood", "Sweat", or "Intolerance" 🤘🤘
That middle/end section is incredible: First Adam with the 'pull through' palm muting on his own, then Justin with the bass solo (tone and melody ++), then Maynard's weird vocal tone, with DANNY on the synth, then all back in to 'straighten out' (still in 7!), then smashing into the outro.
I love this song. Really makes me feel so much for them as a band and individually. The way it's arranged it's supposed to sound like they're struggling, the cadence is like someone limping but then finding their second wind.
i saw this song live - when the beat slows down during the instrumental part - Adam plays rhythm and Justin comes in on the bass with some whammy pedal shifting him up really high and other effects like flange, sounding like a synth lead or heavily effected guitar. then a little bit latter the drums also stop and Danny plays a synth line using some mallet controlled synth keyboard behind his kit- while Maynard sings along to that melody. when the last note of that rings out he turns around and goes back into the drums - all live and pretty flawlessly done. it was pretty amazing to see.
It'd be cool to see you do a video on your personal fav songs you've reacted too so far. Maybe top 5 or 10 list. And how often do you listen to a song after you react to it.
I was at Welcome To Rockville where Tool debuted this song live!!! It was epic on so many levels, to be the first to hear new Tool music in over a decade!!
I've been waiting for this song.. this is my favorite tool song ever. I would watch this where you do a lyrical break down for this. This song lyrically is masterful Just a true hitter.
Thank You! This song replaced "Stinkfist" as my favorite song of all time after I heard it the first time. It was amazing live as well! Truly a masterpiece for you to enjoy. Tool FTW!
They DO use synths. Live in 2019 they had the singer from the opening band walk out and play any synth parts beyond when Adam stepped over and used it occasionally. Justin WAS playing harmonics but he never put down his pick for the performance. He was just using pick+fret harmonics. Whatever it is called lol
Fear inoculum is Tool’s Magnum Opus. It is the pinnacle of their musical journey. What an incredible work of art. The synth sound that starts at 20:10 of your video is actually a marimba lumina played by Danny. I seen him do it live. It’s that giant keyboard looking thing that arcs above/behind his kit.
Being a life long tool fan a “OGT Back from '92, from the first EP” it is so enjoyable to watch you listen to their songs. I could watch the whole thing without you even talking. Just your reaction of the music over talking you, appreciating it the way they intended. Watching you become a full fledge member of the tool army has been a great journey. “Tool for the win” indeed.
the groove and snare at 21:40 are life changers. Whenever I reach that section, I stop what I'm doing, crank it up and enjoy before, all too soon, it's over.
seen tool at least 5 timee and the fear innoculum tour were all at there hest and nothing as ever felt or sounded like what justin does on bass the best live bass sound ive wver felt or heard it shook my bones and must be experienced
When I listen to this song I picture a movie depicting Julius Caesar on a field in Gaul lining up his troops, Cane Corso's and horses as they charge to smite their foes.
This song is what got me back into Tool. I had to listen to all of their albums. This song is the pinnacle of there music. Its so artistic and so new. No band had these engredients.
I enjoy watch your videos. My dear husband passed away just over two weeks due difficult battle with stomach cancer. He was my warrior and this song reminds me of him. Warrior Strugglin' To remain Consequential Cry aloud, bold and proud O' where I've been But here I am Where I end.. I miss him so much.. I hope TOOL/music will give me some strength and makes me a warrior..
It's hard to step through the portal, while analyzing the craftsmanship. Hehe. My first listen to any piece of music, I try to not analyze the structure. After that I; learn the lyrics, start to analyze the music itself, analyze production/recording techniques employed. Your challenge is very difficult in doing both on a first listen, especially with music as extreme as TOOL. But you are uniquely qualified and crushing it. Your insight into this music has been the next step in helping me enjoy it, by gaining insight from someone with the formal music training I lack. That vocal section you talk about around 22 minutes, sounds like a higher definition version of a 70's era Vocoder. Danny has a huge synth array that he loves to fuck around with (In my world there's Pink Floyd and TOOL - the "perfect albums" bands. Danny is like Roger with synths) and when you get around to the track Chocolate Chip Trip (drum solo) you'll see how he uses them to counter his drumming to incredible effect. My biggest suggestion in your journey that only can be taken by travelling through the portal that is TOOL's music, is to visit the source. The fist EP. Unlike everything else. It's brutal and raw. You will not be distracted by engineering techniques. You will not be having to worry about whether you can understand the lyrics. It will just hit you with raw force. No better way to appreciate the latest album and it's place in the progression of their artform, than to see how it all started. In dirty little clubs in SoCal, playing shows with other incredible bands like Rage. Music is the closest thing I've found on this planet, to magic. TOOL uses science/magic to enact their art. It's almost a new art form. Rich the Ancient Metal Beast
I don't think I could have clicked this notification fast enough Geebz!! "Invincible" is such an incredible work of art, one of my all time favorite Tool songs, and one which I seriously hear a new nugget just about every time I listen to it. OK, now it's time to watch your breakdown. Peace Brother Geebz!!
this song takes my breath away every time. the hairs on my arms get tired from standing on end for so long. so much of their music is amazing but this feels like the whole band firing on all cylinders. nothing left on the table after this.
Being humble on yt is rare nowadays in my opinion. I watched all your tool videos and because of that started to like you and subscribe. Probably I can learn from youa lot.I make own music on laptop, weird one one, need to learn soo much. Thank You - for me Tool was the most important band always, I first heard them when I was 16 and not all was to my liking but as I was growing up my music hearing and taste grew also and expanded, started to listen to orchestral, ambient, weird shit sometimes but never stopped with tool, they were always there, for years. Always finding out something new in their music.
Tool FTW! It’s been awesome watching you go down this journey. If there’s one thing us fans love more than the band itself is watching someone else start to “get it” and see it click. Also don’t feel bad about missing things. I’ve listened to the same tracks of there’s for 20 years and I still notice something new all the time. Aloha

3:13 he’s in the “Deep Thinker” pose….love it
I think I just witnessed my favorite moment on this channel.
Geebz looks a bit stunned, pauses song, "I just have one thing to say there, Danny"
Also, he said that without realizing that section is immediately followed by Danny's synth solo.
I was hoping someone pointed out that was Danny on the synth immediately following that. Something I wouldn't believe if I hadn't seen videos of it. I wanna say the only thing Danny can't do is sing just so some video will surface of him showing off outstanding vocals. He's not human.
You madman😂😂😂😂 "obviously I can hear the change coming up" ... perfect pause. You're a talent sir. Love your work.
Just a reminder. Tool songs only get better with repeat listens. I didn't like this song much at first...but there's just so much you don't catch or that isn't apparent in a first listen.
Totaly agree. It is hard to imagine but there was a time when i didn't even like Tool, but after a couple of repeats i was fully converted.
Invincible and Right In Two took a long time to grow on me but may be my favorites now tbh.
Yep this song was just weird to me in the beginning, but now its one of the best tracks.
Descending and culling voices were my least favorites on the album, but the more I listen to them the more I realized they were absolute pieces of wonderful sonic art
You got that right!
"I just have one thing to say there...Danny."
Great breakdown as always.
this is the energizer bunny of tool songs. it just keeps going. :D
The whole album to me is like that, it never fully delivers.. it just goes on
I mean, 7empest.....
@@GimmeJimmy23 thats awesome dude glad it helps you out.
Are those batteries as bad as this song? Entire album feels like blue balls.. they never climax just endless build up.
Kinda the point of the song to me…just gotta keep on keepin on even though life doesn’t always end up how you want it to.
still remember hearing this for the first time, hearing the toms doing one thing, the bass doing another, and then once in a while, they happen to sync up. Stunning choices.
An old friend once said… “Tool has a way of tickling your chackras just right”.
Tool for the win!!
Danny is magic on this whole album.
MagicK...😘

I feel like tool's metrics and timing force people to grow as listeners. Its not an idle listen. It takes a critical, practiced ear to wrap your senses around just how good thier music us. Tool tought me to be a better consumer of music. It took a while to acquire the ear needed but im so glad i stuck with it
What a beautiful song about getting old.... Some of us are further on the journey than others, but most can relate to the feeling of being long in tooth and soul. [Tool for the win!]
Love when bands can get a 6/8 feel while actually playing in 7/8.
My appreciation of music is much more simplistic. Tool good!
30 years later....they're still that friggin good.......what a band.......the definition of a band...organic and all necessary, no one star, they are all parallel.....what a band....thanks Geebz......keep going with the TooL
so true. Maynard can only reach his top game with these guys. and the reverse is also true. so integrated.
As a 53 y,o these lyrics are 🎯
The struggle is real kids!
Warrior remain warrior regardless neverendless
Tool for the win! Fear Inoculum just sounds so beautiful and powerful as a whole. Descending would be my next pick
The way Danny forshadows what’s about to happen at 25:20 is extremely impressive artistry. I remember specifically the first time I heard that segment my jaw dropped. This song, to me, is one of the most beautiful they’ve written, along with Descending. I think that’s why they played them both first before the album released
What does he foreshadow exactly? I genuinely want to understand. Thanks!❤️
I think going back and re-listening to tracks is the way to go. That’s tool’s whole deal.
With a special emphasis on understanding the lyrics, which brings everything around and ties the song together.
I was on a long road up here in the Pacific Northwest so when I pulled over it was quiet and dark, woods surrounding the road, and I listened all the way through the album two more times just laying back in my seat and appreciating the life I have had so far and that Tool was still such a huge part of it
I'm reading your comment, and I'm not crying. It's just something got in my eye.
25:43 is just priceless!!! The "I should have known they'd blow me away" reaction!!! Thank you sir for all these!!!
"Beating tired bones
, Tripping through remember when
Once invincible, Now the armor's wearing thin"
This makes me cry every time I don't even know why
The reason it does this for me is because I have always viewed this song as a metaphor of Europe, America and Canada(I live in Canada) and the once strong nations that have their "shields down", the whole album dropping prior to C-19 and the whole syringe theme.
I don't recognize Canada anymore and I was born and raised here, our history is being torn down and applauded, this is why I tear up.
Tool ftw!
Heavy shield, down.
@@Imiss80sn90s I feel for you. If you can make it down to Texas or Florida sanity is still dominant here for the most part.
This song is just unbelievable... More than 1 year that I listen to it and it always pumps me up, leaving me speechless.
The face, the eyes, the twisting, the second guessing... makes all my figuring out the damn tabs worth it in the end... just when you got in a rhythm they made you second guess.. I love it
One of the best engineered albums of all time!?
Tool for the win !
This is my favorite song from this album, Maynard's singing and all of the clean tone arpegiated melodies are just so satisfying
At the end, you gave an incredulous laugh and said, "Oh, shit." That is the proper response. Well done!
This song is a battle dude. An old warrior trying to maintain their place on the battlefield but ultimately dying a warrior's death. The inevitable finally catches that warrior but not before they have one last show of their true strength and power. An absolute masterpiece.
This song was a definite highlight on the album for me. More subtle than pneuma or 7empest, but much more relevant to my own experience.
Danny is an absolute phenom.
Can't wait to see Geebz react to an early track like 'Jerk off' or 'Cold and Ugly.' LOL. 🤯
Or Opiate :P
Intolerance, Swamp Song, or Bottom
Or Flood. Probably my favourite bass track off that album.
^^^^^^ This is a must
I'm kind of sad how much he's neglected undertow and completely ignored opiate. They both bring something unique to the narrative of tool.
"allow the song to be the song" true words of wisdom sir 👍
Geebz, you have no idea the torture it was to wait 14 years between new Tool albums. Hearing this song was worth it. This entire album is like a masterpiece of Tool doing what Tool does. Couldn’t have been happier with it. I’m excited to beer your thoughts on other tracks from it.
To wait that long and to receive this masterpiece is something amazing!
Don't worry he'll get to experience it over the next decade or so while we wait for another studio album. Lol
I graduated high school, graduated college, and went through two jobs, and Tool still hadn't released a new album!
Yeah no shit.
I’m right there with you...same for me
+1
Yep. Me three.
Rock 101 KUFO in Portland, Oregon was the station where I first heard "Sober" back when. That station introduced me to some great bands. It's a right wing talk radio station now. Revelance is subjective if you ask me.
I know u did this 2 years ago but I appreciate you
I think you need to listen to some earlier Tool for your next reaction, specifically the songs they recorded with original bassist Paul d'Amour. A few good suggestions would be "Undertow", "Flood", "Sweat", or "Intolerance" 🤘🤘
Totally agree!!!
@CeleryFox it was the one that got me hooked. Now I just devour everything they do.
Why?
You lie! Cheat and steal!
I saw it, while on mushrooms. Indescribable.
I did too it’s on my UA-cam
It'd be cool to see you do a video on your personal fav songs you've reacted too so far. Maybe top 5 or 10 list. And how often do you listen to a song after you react to it.
I was at Welcome To Rockville where Tool debuted this song live!!! It was epic on so many levels, to be the first to hear new Tool music in over a decade!!
I've been waiting for this song.. this is my favorite tool song ever. I would watch this where you do a lyrical break down for this. This song lyrically is masterful Just a true hitter.
My favorite Tool song as well. So powerful and heavy - musically, thematically… A lyric breakdown would be something else.
The BASS is outstanding!
TooL for the win, and I hope you know we love sticking with you until the end. Thank you for being the dude you are.
This is a prog masterpiece, thanks for taking the time for this reaction.
Honestly one of my favorite parts of this song is the sound that Danny’s cymbals have. The way they mic’d them is perfect.
His cymbal and hi hat work is likely my favorite part of his musical genius. I guess that comes from his jazz background.
31 minutes. Still here. You're the best!
Being a life long tool fan a “OGT
Back from '92, from the first EP” it is so enjoyable to watch you listen to their songs. I could watch the whole thing without you even talking. Just your reaction of the music over talking you, appreciating it the way they intended. Watching you become a full fledge member of the tool army has been a great journey. “Tool for the win” indeed.
@012wood
I've got some advice for you little buddy...
the groove and snare at 21:40 are life changers. Whenever I reach that section, I stop what I'm doing, crank it up and enjoy before, all too soon, it's over.
Finally the lyrics!!!! You are missing so much depth without them. The music draws you in, the lyrics bring you to ascension.
seen tool at least 5 timee and the fear innoculum tour were all at there hest and nothing as ever felt or sounded like what justin does on bass the best live bass sound ive wver felt or heard it shook my bones and must be experienced
this is definetly one of my fav songs on FI
as someone who loves instrumentals and rarely focuses on lyrics, i would LOVE to watch you react to tool lyrics
Its like Floyd Rush & Sabbath mixed into one band. They have been my favorite band for the last 30 years
When I listen to this song I picture a movie depicting Julius Caesar on a field in Gaul lining up his troops, Cane Corso's and horses as they charge to smite their foes.
Haha, I see a similar image but it’s of a Viking, lol
I’d actually love to see Adam do an animated short to this song.
This song is what got me back into Tool. I had to listen to all of their albums. This song is the pinnacle of there music. Its so artistic and so new. No band had these engredients.
Fantastic as always, Geebz! Gotta do Descending from this album next. And maybe a few from Undertow, too? 4 degrees is always a good choice!
I enjoy watch your videos. My dear husband passed away just over two weeks due difficult battle with stomach cancer. He was my warrior and this song reminds me of him.
Warrior
Strugglin'
To remain
Consequential
Cry aloud, bold and proud
O' where I've been
But here I am
Where I end..
I miss him so much.. I hope TOOL/music will give me some strength and makes me a warrior..
I'm probably the only one who's been waiting for this one, this is my favorite tool song, best notification to wake up to thank you!
All songs on fear inocoulum are my fav
I was hoping you’d note how melodic (almost “dreamy”) this song is compared to their other earlier fare. Maynard’s voice is such a smooth ride.
Your timing is once again impeccable. You talk about that tribal feeling on a song about an old warrior with a war beat rhythm in the breakdown
Tool is definitely a Portal I go through EVERY day!
that solo at 18:55 is justin and the synth at 20:08 is played by danny on this huge keyboard thing behind his kit that he plays with mallets
Tool ftw! And yes, definitely read the lyrics for Tool, even if it's something you do privately.
17:35 I've listened to this song enough times to be able to sing, headbang, and air drum, all at the same time, to every little thing.
Aloha
I had not seen this reaction of yours, and to see your face as you listen to this song... it's priceless, yeah, Tool is something so beautiful, I'm definitely grateful to have lived at the same time as Tool exist
I would suggest H for the next Tool vid. One of my favorite Tool tunes. Also give Third Eye a go. I think Geebz would really appreciate the Bill Hicks parts.
He already listened to My Third Eye if you want to go back and check that out. Think it was a few months or so ago.
