Kudo for me. Turns a lot of random white/green tokens better. Runs well with both Slime against Humanity or Hare Appearent since it turns the 0/0 or 1/1 tokens into 2/2s. Since they're also bears you can use something like Ayula to get the etb effects of her to either pump your board or to remove problematic creatures

2024 was an insane ywar for lands. I dedicated a whole 30 min video just to covering them and I didn't even do super in depth on a lot of them. That's crazy. One of my favorite Commanders of the year is Rendmaw, gifting everyone flying birds is awesome!
I got my surveil lands at rock bottom prices around 4 bucks or so and got play sets or more. so glad I did that. crazy to see them at 10 bucks average.
By far my favorite card this year has got to be Prisoner’s Dilemma. That card gets slapped into nearly every red deck simply because I love the chaos is causes. It gets the table talking and if anyone chooses to snitch it just causes drama. And I can flash it back. It’s the card for me in terms of flavor
@41:00 Be careful about using Shifting Woodland to become things like that Sheoldred that have "At the beginning of your upkeep..." or any upkeep type triggers. The earliest in a turn that a player gains Priority is during the Upkeep, however anything that triggers at the beginning of the Upkeep has already happened by that point. So for the Sheoldred, you would never get her triggers on your Upkeep or other players' Upkeeps.

thank you! i built a new mono green deck and grabbed this land out of a precon to play and was just looking through my graveyard during the first game for what i could use it on and thought Seedborn Muse was just perfect and only realized after the game that it was illegal to have done it.
@@MarquesAllenJones Oh snap, well hey, at least you caught it on your own. I hope it didn't impact the game tooooo much, although with how good Seedborn is, it probably did help out a ton. One cool thing I'll say that you can do with the Woodland, it take a lot of mana to do, but you can activate it multiple times, over and over and over, and have it become a different targeted thing each time. Between each ability resolving and it becoming a new thing, you can use it for what it is at that moment until the next activation resolves changing it to something new. I have done that a lot with my Mirage Mirror. Not handy for things that require tapping, but with other non-tapping Activated Abilities as well as Triggered Abilities (and even Static Abilities and Replacement Effects) it is cool to have so many on hand at any point.
I remember being whelmed by my play booster box but I opened so many surveillands which just crept up in price, and then there's these staply commons like Pick Your Poison and Aftermath Analyst at uncommon, which just prop op the value of that box. I think it's just nice when a lot of the value of a box is in the rares vs just in the mythics. You can draft this box and realistically expect some people to open surveil lands, which is always a sweet pickup.
I'm just old, or do others miss the block format of MTG? Like I started playing during the Onslaught Block. I can't even imagine playing in standard nowadays. There are too many cards. However, to join the spirit of the podcast, my favorite commander was Stella Lee, Wild Card, not because she was incredibly powerful but because of the challenge of making this deck. So, from the 99, I would need to say Haughty Djinn because of all the games won with this creature.
Block was much better. The chaos of current standard is multi fold. One thing is, there is no consistent story or flavor. That was actually one of the biggest thing that made Standard fun to play at least for me. You have standard telling a story across a Block of sets, and that also meshed with consistent strategies available in that standard block. The charm of a limited card pool does not mesh with the Universes Beyond. And the charm of a “limited” card pool does not mesh well with a rotating format. At this point Standard is just too bloated and yet too quick a rotating format with no good buy in moment. There are cards from two years ago still dominating standard metas. Why? So you mean to tell me if I want to buy into a certain standard meta, I have to buy cards that are out of the recent print cycle?!? It makes 0 sense especially with how valueless play boosters are for people who want to buy a box or two to get a lot of the cards from the set. It’s just such a confusing clusterfuck of decisions.
Leaving the block system imo is a top 3 mistakes wotc ever made. Funnily enough my favourite cards of the year are almost exclusively otters and I built an Otter deck… but two of the otters that didn’t make the cut were the two that Josh liked the most lmao.
I've been preaching Ripples as the most underrated card of the year and I still stand by it. Every time I play it someone goes "it does what?!" Value town baybeee
Delney in Sefris of the Hidden Ways is just dumb. Definitely my favourite addition to that deck this year. Ripples of Undeath is my favourite card from this year though.
@@russellcobb7578 It doesn't trigger the first ability, but it does return a second creature from the graveyard with Sefris's second ability as the second ability doesn't have the 'once a turn' limitation. And honestly, that is the more exciting part of playing Sefris...
@@SamySapphyre you're right. I remember not putting in Delney bc it didn't work with the dungeons part of Sefris. It felt like too much attention for only working with half the commander. But now that I'm thinking about it most of the dungeon creatures and support creatures trigger twice w Delney so I'll take a second look. Also you're 💯 on Ripples of Undeath, its a house in Sefris

I took out one of the bigger and scarier threats in my list to put Delney in because it is so powerful with all the recursion and dungeon synergies from the other creatures, like you said. I do think my playgroup are cottoning onto its power though, still, it’s a great include!
Jamie's pick on the Dollmakers // Porcelain is spot on. This card is a legit win con in my Jeskai tokens deck. it grows your army every turn for 2 mana which establishes itself as a game ending 6 mana play along the way. No notes. All gas. Also, Fanatic of Rhonas is INCREDIBLE in my Miirym Dragons deck.
Melek has become my favorite commander i built this year! love having the super powerful counterspells cost just 2 blue or even FoF cost 1, frantic search cost 1, and mana geyser cost 2 red. really fun commander and love seeing Eric's input on it, wish i could see his decklist so i could possibly improve mine!
Favorite commander (and the only one I’ve built this year) is kambal profiteering mayor. It’s so fun playing cards like the hunted cycle, and giving everyone tokens that I also get. Favorite card is probably shoot the sheriff. A. For efficiency, it kills most things. B. For flavor (flavor of the card, and the flavor text) Honorable mention to disinformation campaign for being my favorite limited card

So many great cards from The Big Score list in Outlaws of the Thunder Junction Simulacrum Synthesizer and Esoteric Duplicator are some of my favorites for sure. And even the main set, Railway Brawler, Final Showdown, Bristly Bill, Smuggler's Surprise is a beast of a card too. Favorite commander has gotta be Satya. Love all the energy theme support that we got this year. Satoru the Infiltrator is great too, finally a good ninja commander to replace Yuriko.
Dang… new Melek might not be the most insane commander ever, but he does so much of the stuff I wanna do in a spellslinger game. Definitely on my radar now!
Wizards should implement a type of prowess or magecraft that triggers when anyone casts non creatures. It would make for good politicking and as a deterrent for stormier decks
What a great video! Overlooked a lot of stuff this year but was definitely a great year for commander. Got some interesting new ideas for decks I built or plan on building this year for sure! Favorite in the 99? Absolutely no idea but probably the surveil lands? Favorite new commander hands down miss bumbleflower! Favorite new card of the year and absolutely my favorite deck! 2nd is probably the green black winter, and 3rd is Caesar. Haven't built it yet but just started going through cards for it and just picked up the precon and very excited to build it. It does my 2 favorite things! A bunch of tokens and aristocrats! Only downside is no green but still seems great
Arabella was definitely my favorite commander this year. Made me not play my blue as much. You get enough 1/1 and 2/2 tokens on board she burns alot. And because its an attack trigger you can do shenanigans to pull her out of combat.
My new favorite card is quilled Greatwurm in my new favorite commander's deck, Ms.Bumbleflower. ALL in on +1/+1 synergy and hardened scale type effects.
My favorite commander of the year is muerra, is absurd how much mana and impulse draw she can make, is cool to have ultra busted cards that allmost only works in ultra niche decks, just feels right.
If you are upset about the price of the surveil lands, bloomburrow printed a common one that makes colorless mana so check it out if you are 1-2 colors!
I recall Screaming Nemesis being rather annoying to deal with. Tempt with Bunnies was just a fun card. There was a new Massacre Girl that released, right? Obeka, Splitter of Seconds was a fun card, I think? What’s that one red enchantment that makes 5/5 dragons from Foundations? That’s probably my favorite from there.
Screaming Nemesis is incredibly cracked in 1v1 because you don’t care about your opponent’s feelings. In commander you have to be so careful with how you play it because it can be brutal. I play it on turn three and get someone else to block it and we can turn off a lifegain deck entirely. That sucks. I have it in a deck because I love running my Standard cards in Commander even when they don’t fit, and my rule is just ‘the player that causes damage to it is the only one I can target with the ability’, if you bolt or block or attack into it, you can have your lifegain turned off but I’m not gonna collude with anyone else to do it.
i don't see how Sheoldred would work will with shifting woodland. You will just have a 6/6 with swampwalk, since you don't get priority before Sheoldred trigger would go on the stack.
Without hate can someone explain to me how surveil lands are as good as they are? I understand they are very good but i don’t see how just surveilling gives that much value outside graveyard decks, you get to fetch for them look at a card and put it in the graveyard idk it just doest seem THAT crazy to me, very good still but not insane.
Before watching: I'm going to be disappointed if Kona doesn't make the cut. Long term, that card is going to slap folks around. I have 4 decks with green, and only my Phyrexian toxic deck doesn't have one. Love Patchwork Banner as well. I have 4 spread across everything tribal
If you are playing a deck with at least some graveyard interaction (as most good decks tend to do), surveilling into the yard versus scrying to bottom allows you to have a chance to use the card again in the future. Scrying pretty much ensures it is gone for good unless you shuffle and draw a significant amount 20+) of cards.
@@Kbreezy13 it can actually be desirable. But i don't think it's a bad down side really, I can always manage it. The tokens can set up a win also, they have pseudo haste
I personally think surveil lands are just bad.... No option to enter untapped is just a guildgate with surveil. No thanks Metaporphosis Fanatic is amazing in my clerics deck too
Rachel, as a fellow Sidisi player, and as a fellow Metamorphosis Fanatic fanatic, those two are besties and they belong together. As a fellow Pia enthusiast (my Pia deck is called "Bring Your Daughter to Work Day"), Warleader's Call is great (as are other Tremors-like effects).
Big disagree. They are pricey, but very worth it. As soon as you're playing fetch lands, or any farseek, or other white forms of land fetch that get typed lands, their value skyrockets. If I didn't have them already, I would probably buy them before shock lands IF my deck has land fetch options.
@@paullloyd9331 compared to other lands maybe, but if you're someone who budgets their decks then alotting that pricing to other piece will often be more valuable

For how much people bag on Murders At Karlov Manor it definitely made this list a lot.

Solid pick. My pick was Kona, but when I got Jump Scare for Zimone, I threw Kona in for a nice stompy tutor.

Delney doesn't work with Sefris. Sefris doesn't allow Delney to have Sefris to trigger the second time.

Haven't built it yet but just started going through cards for it and just picked up the precon and very excited to build it. It does my 2 favorite things! A bunch of tokens and aristocrats! Only downside is no green but still seems great
Arabella was definitely my favorite commander this year. Made me not play my blue as much. You get enough 1/1 and 2/2 tokens on board she burns alot. And because its an attack trigger you can do shenanigans to pull her out of combat.
My new favorite card is quilled Greatwurm in my new favorite commander's deck, Ms.Bumbleflower. ALL in on +1/+1 synergy and hardened scale type effects.
My favorite commander of the year is muerra, is absurd how much mana and impulse draw she can make, is cool to have ultra busted cards that allmost only works in ultra niche decks, just feels right.
If you are upset about the price of the surveil lands, bloomburrow printed a common one that makes colorless mana so check it out if you are 1-2 colors!

What’s that one red enchantment that makes 5/5 dragons from Foundations? That’s probably my favorite from there.
Screaming Nemesis is incredibly cracked in 1v1 because you don’t care about your opponent’s feelings.
In commander you have to be so careful with how you play it because it can be brutal. I play it on turn three and get someone else to block it and we can turn off a lifegain deck entirely. That sucks.
I have it in a deck because I love running my Standard cards in Commander even when they don’t fit, and my rule is just ‘the player that causes damage to it is the only one I can target with the ability’, if you bolt or block or attack into it, you can have your lifegain turned off but I’m not gonna collude with anyone else to do it.
Giggling Skitterspike is easily my favorite in the 99. ❤
i don't see how Sheoldred would work will with shifting woodland. You will just have a 6/6 with swampwalk, since you don't get priority before Sheoldred trigger would go on the stack.
Shifting woodlands notably cannot make use of any permanants with 'beginning of upkeep' triggers
Murders at Karlov Manner seemed pretty boring at the time but looking back had some absolutely cracked cards in the set
Banner of Kinship and Three Tree City have been top tier for me.

Yes when a bestowed creature falls off it becomes a creature it is in the reminder text
Without hate can someone explain to me how surveil lands are as good as they are? I understand they are very good but i don’t see how just surveilling gives that much value outside graveyard decks, you get to fetch for them look at a card and put it in the graveyard idk it just doest seem THAT crazy to me, very good still but not insane.
I liked all those cards that had nothing to do with the lore and spit in the face of its fandom.

outside of graveyard decks how is surveil better than scry? in a non yard deck they're both equally meh
If you are playing a deck with at least some graveyard interaction (as most good decks tend to do), surveilling into the yard versus scrying to bottom allows you to have a chance to use the card again in the future. Scrying pretty much ensures it is gone for good unless you shuffle and draw a significant amount 20+) of cards.
Everyone still sleeping on perch protection. This is no doubt the best card of the year.
I think it is better than people give credit for, but I wouldn’t say it’s the best card this year
In your experience does the extra turn matter? That seems like a huge Gift but haven’t seen this played at all.
@@Kbreezy13 it can actually be desirable. But i don't think it's a bad down side really, I can always manage it. The tokens can set up a win also, they have pseudo haste

It is incredibly pushed, that’s all. It has an easy place in many many decks and is very powerful

Surveil lands are overrated. Not worth the price tag.
Big disagree. They are pricey, but very worth it. As soon as you're playing fetch lands, or any farseek, or other white forms of land fetch that get typed lands, their value skyrockets. If I didn't have them already, I would probably buy them before shock lands IF my deck has land fetch options.
