  • Triumph Tiger 1050, Problem: Flat battery only when hot. Cools down & it starts fine...
To find the problem, I eliminated the battery & electrical cables out of the equation by hooking up my battery booster directly to the positive side of the starter motor & earthing it on the frame.
It's still acting like a flat battery!
Then once its cooled down, it starts just fine.
    EDIT
I dismantled the starter motor, nothing wrong with it! I replaced it with another one, Did nothing! Its still doing the problem!! If its not an electrical problem & its not the starter motor Then what is it?? It can't be the Sprag Clutch because that wouldnt act like a flat battery only when hot! & it definitely doesnt sound like this: • Speed Triple Startup N...
    *EDIT*
Hey yes I think I have the answer!.... It is a design flaw in the Engine starter idler gears! & there is a Service bulletin out from Triumph to fix it!
Here is a photo of the 1050 engine with the starter/crank engine cover off: i380.photobucke...
My Theory is, Those Idler gears you see rite there in the photo are The Problem!! They are the design flaw! When it gets hot, they run out of clearance & bind up. The starter motor doesnt have enough power to push through when they are hot & tight. Let it cool down, the gears loosen & it free's up.
    The new starter kit replaces the following parts;
    New version Starter Motor
New version heavy duty Sprag Clutch
New version different ratio Starter Idler Gears
    Different shape x2 Engine covers
    Required Gaskets.
Part Number for new Starter Kit: T1229901
Triumph Australia deny they know anything about my problem... But they do recommend fitting this kit & it 'Might' fix it'.
I think Triumph know EXACTLY what the problem is! & thats why they made this new kit! It replaces Starter Moter, Idler gears & Everything! Even new shape engine covers!!
The Kit costs $1258-AUD ..... Triumph expect the owner to fork out to fix this problem.
I think that's terrible! Triumph should have done a recall & fitted the kit for free to every bike!
Here is a link to the Triumph Service Bulletin about the required new starter kit: i380.photobucke...
Have a look at your engine number. The first number is 5. Its irrelevant, ignore that number 5.
Minus the 5 at the start, If your engine number is Under 502538, then your engine requires the new starter kit.
Minus the 5 at the start, my 2008 model engine number is 338478, So mine is way under & requires the kit. You's certainly does too.
Ive ordered the kit, I'll have it in 3 weeks. Going to take lots of photos & compare the starter idler gears & everything.
Its HAS to fix it. There is nothing else to replace!

Problem fixed for me: installed thicker battery wires, from battery to starter motor and negative from battery to frame. Problem completely solved.

Had the same problem on my 2007 sprint st 1050. Changed the battery and fitted thicker battery/starter motor cables. seems to have cured the problem. much cheaper than replacing starter motor.

  • @apamintuan

I had a 2006 Speed Triple and had similar issues. Ended up changing the stator along with the regulator/rectifier - seemed to fix the electrical gremlins that come along with a british bike!

ok cool, yea I've replaced my stator & regulator as well in the past, but it didn't help with this. Don't see how they would help with this either. This is a flat battery only when hot. Once it cools down it starts fine. I've now proved here the starter motor is the problem.
Replacing the Stator & regulator would only fix problems with charging while running.
Thanks for your info tho ;)
*Edit*... The starter motor is not the problem, the Starter idler gears are the problem. The new starter kit fixes it.

Hey dude, ive had exactly the same problem on my '12. It was extremely annoying.
Luckily i had an easy fix, replaced the stock battery with a higher amp battery and now its solved. Before that I had been looking for a fix for ages and its seems like there is not a similar cure, what works for one.. doesnt work for the other. So best of luck with finding out what keeps the tiger from starting!

My bike (2006 Speed Triple 1050) makes almost exactly the same noise during (failing) hot start. Just like you, I have already exchanged battery, alternator stator and rectifier, without solving the issue.
Could you maybe re-upload the mentioned service bulletin? The photobucket file is no longer accessible...
That would help me so incredibly much!!

I had this problem with my 2011SE, problem is caused by pressure in the cooling system - replacing the 5 years old radiator cap (as it was not letting pressure out into the expansion bottle) and bleeding the air out of the cooling system fixed it for me... took a while to track down.. Recommend everyone replace their radiator cap every 3 years as a rule.

Had the same problem on my 2012 street triple, did the same as you. replace the battery, relay and solenoid but still the same, as soon it gets hot no start. Turns out it was the starter motor, its was full of carbon dust, brushes where worn out. I think the carbon must raise the resistant's so the motor won`t turn when it gets hot. You can not buy replacement brushes for the motor from triumph only a replacement motor at £360, F**k that..... I have brought some brushes from ebay which are very close in size, I`m going to fit them this weekend, I mite have a go at making a video

@@plve82 after reading your struggles I'm glad to see you got rid of the POS. Triumphs are POS. How about them Daytonas right? I believe they're the ones? Always liked all the different aesthetic changes but then read several reports of guys riding them around at cruising speeds around 4000 rpms when the crankshaft shattered into pieces causing them to wreck. Have you ever heard of this problem?

@@kkc3009 Hey KC, no I hadn't heard of th Daytona's self destructing but it doesn't surprise me. My experience with Triumph makes me realise that Triumph doesn't have the R&D to keep up with their modern designs. They want to keep up with Japanese manufacturers but they can't build them reliable.
My Honda, 2012 VFR1200X Crosstourer I bought in 2016 has been an absolute delight, not a single issue, just perfect reliability. So so happy I made the change 👌

@@plve82 have some older Hondas I got in rough shape and only got the one with low mileage to run good. Go figure it was a 3,000 mile cx500 that ran beautiful then leaked coolant like a b!tch out of the water pump cover weep. Pretty sure it's due to a metal fan shaft bearing and requires engine removal because you can't get a puller in the space to remove and install a new bearing. Thought about just plugging the weep hole and riding til destruction but I put it up. Not a huge fan of Hondas but can't argue that most have a winning reputation with few major engineering flaws. I never had a little to problem free Honda but I would probably love an 07+ cbr 600-1000. Never had anything newer than 01 bandit 1200. I can say I'll never have a pretty Daytona or cool looking tiger for fear it'll be even worse to deal with then all my old rockets and big fours.
