I know this vid is 5 years old, but let me add a comment that might help others please. It may be tempting to not want to spend the $75 for the Suzuki Relay and instead buy a much cheaper one. I bought a cheap one first and it failed in short order. I popped for the Suzuki and it has worked very well. I also cut apart the old Suzuki relay and the cheap aftermarket one and you can see the big difference in quality. The cheap one was cheap in every way. The plastic case is way cheaper. The springs are weaker. And the way they swage the two contacts to the terminal is really inferior. Don't use them. Go with the expensive Suzuki one. Not perfect, but way better. Very interesting how these work. There are actually two springs inside that balance the contact plunger. The open spring is slightly stronger. When the starter button is pushed, it energizes a solenoid coil that then overcomes the open spring allowing the close spring to push the contact button towards the two terminals. Of course there is a healthy dose of current that needs to go to the starter and eventually this causes pitting in the contacts. Over time this can cause "insulation" and enough current won't flow. This is when you will need to replace the relay.
@@deanbradley6887 couldn’t agree more. Crazy how common this problem is and is usually overlooked. I’d rather pay sub $100 for a relay than a stator/rec fix! Thanks for the helpful info and hope we can continue to help other riders!
Yo my man My bike has been sitting for about 2 and a 1/2 years and I've been having this problem and this right here I believe will be my 2nd relay To be changed on it but I followed your instructions on here and it actually worked now I just got to buy a new relay lol thank God they're cheap In price and not expensive
If you have no power at all. Check the relay fuse. It's right on the relay. Usually a big 30amp fuse (some come with a spare) If it doesn't turn the starter motor then listen to what this dude says 🤙
Good call, this is a direct result of bean counters telling the Engineers the tried and true materials are too expensive and to make it cheaper. What is happening inside the solenoid is the contact surfaces either wear through or are so burned that they no longer make contact due to pitting and carbon build up. Being a sealed unit there is no way of being able to clean the mating surfaces for a few hundred more starts. Replacement is the only option.
Give it a try! If you can, be sure to check the voltage on the battery. When testing the relay and starter motor, it needs a certain amount of voltage to turn over. Just keep that in mind before spending a bunch of money on things that may not be the problem like I did :P
Good diagnosis, never trust a relay, i had the same problem with the car, you hear the relay click but no start, of course replace the relay is the cheapest option, when i inspected the relay after opening it, i found corrosion on the connection, once sanded down and cleaned it works again, so keep it as a spare, i made a video a bout that, nice bike you got there
Thanks for this, really useful. I’ve had a similar problem on my Triumph. I shorted out the solenoid this morning and it fired up first time, didn’t even have to pull the clutch in which was weird.
In the circuit power is supplied to the starter via the clutch switch, forcing you to pull the clutch to connect the starter switch to the relay via the battery, shorting across the poles gives power to the relay upstream of any switches, hence your bike started with no clutch.
I been havin this problem with my Triumph Daytona and I figured this out just a few days ago. Pity I didn't see this video earlier, would have saved me a pointless trip to the mechanic and him telling me I need a new battery (which I bought for no reason 🤦🏾♂️) Glad I saw this video though...confirms my theory. Thanks man.
thank you so much... same issue on my 2016 Kawasaki zx-10r... $15 dollar part verse $150 starter and pain in the ass install! I was like START when I watched this! Keep Ridin' bro!
Im sooooo happy this video helped!! I was depressed because the relay went out about 4 months after I bought the bike and felt like I got stooped! Glad you're up and running! Safe riding!!
Some Moto Guzzi's had a seemingly similar problem that was actually caused, I believe, by the wire feeding power, via the starter relay to the starter solenoid, being too small a gauge to properly feed enough power to said solenoid and giving the impression of a faulty solenoid contact. Problem fixed by running a 25A cable with inline fuse (experiment with fuse size 10, 15 or 20A) from battery to solenoid via the starter relay to replace the original solenoid feed wire.
A V-Twin needs a larger diameter wire than an Inline four due to the current demands. A wire with too small a diameter cannot handle the current needed to do the work and acts like a resistor which further exasperates the issue. An easy check is to physically touch/hold the wire after it has had a load placed upon it. if it's warm, probably not a big deal. If it's too hot to hold, your problem starts there. OHM's LAW. Look it up.
I’m in a similar issue as this. I can hear my solenoid click when I try to start. I’m getting your readings. Although I’m only getting 6v from my positive on my battery and my ground on the relay. Not sure where else to go with it.
Thank you so much for this! I had just a click, so I did this and now my starter is working normally again 🤔. Not complaining, I'm just thinking I've now corrected a bad connection by welding the connector bolts on to the starter relay/solinoid... 😳 It took a bit of turning-over as my bike has been off the road for 18 months, so there were a few sparks and my screwdriver is a bit messed up... 😩😂 It's kind of hard to keep a good, clean contact with just a screwdriver...
David Reid yeah buildup can seize the springs and gear cogs in starters and relays. Which is what happened to mine. It sat for a year and wouldn’t start. This little hack helped me get home a few times!! Haha Safe riding brother!
Thanks for the video !!! I fixed my motorcycle problem which had same issue and it worked. After couple of weeks I’m encountering the same issue after replacing OEM starter relay. I have a brand new battery as well. Any suggestions 😢?
I’m thinking my starter is bad because I replaced the selenoid and it still makes a single clicking sound when I try to turn it on. Can it also be the crankshaft position sensor? Someone told me a bad crankshaft position sensor has the same symptoms as a bad starter
Ay bro I'm working on this right now 05 fz6 just getting a click on ignition. Fully charged battery and load tested good. Gonna try bridging the starter relay, I ordered a new one too. But it'll rule out the motor. Bike has 56,000 miles. Thanks 🙏🤘
Like the other comment, you might be able to repair it. Try taking it apart before buying it? The springs might have corrosion which will block the contacts to close the circuit. I should have checked mine before buying a new one, but it works so Im not complaining! Glad this video helped though, brother. Safe riding!
Thanks bro.......I think I might have the same problem. Covid season.....left the bike standing untouched in the garage all year. Smh 😭 time to see if this works.
For slow cranking and starting problems if the battery is good then check your main ground wire, take it off, clean the connections good. Be careful with aftermarket parts, they may be cheap but may not last or worse the relay may stick closed like mine did.
Man thank you so much! My Sv650s wouldn’t start when i went to the lake and parked up for 10 mins, had to push it back to a friends place and then installed a new battery, but it still wouldn’t start until i tried this! It starts up but i have to bridge the terminals using a screwdriver, i am going to replace the fuses on the relay and if that doesn’t help i’ll swap the whole relay
My man! I hope you got it fixed by now, I'm glad to have helped you via the video! Nothing ruins a great day of riding and chillin by the water, then returning to see your bike wont start. Did you ever get a solid fix?
@@ejkmusic11 hmmm...when you hit the ignition, does the relay click at all? If it doesn't, it sounds like the problem. It usually starts with the battery, ignition, relay, starter motor, and so on so forth. This is assuming that the battery is fully charged and all your ground wires are secure. I would inspect the ignition switch on the handlebar. I've seen videos where corrosion built up in the springs or corroded contacts. Maybe even wires that connect it to the relay. Man, I hope you find a fix soon. :(
Nothing happens when i click the button apart from the lights dipping as per normal, and i replaced the battery also so its bound to be the ignition. Ill have a look tomorrow! Thanks dude me too haha
Starter relay due tomorrow... Fingers crossed she fires up!!! Thanks for the video very helpful! 🤞 Update: so the new relay was out in but still the same.. buzzing sound.. any idea what you would have checked next? Starts sometimes but mostly now it's like this?.. thanks for any help...
Looks like you’ve helped a lot of people with this video I hope it fixes my problem. My bike sounds just like yours when I push the start button. One click. I’m hoping it’s just the fuse in there but I doubt it.
Thanks for the video! Because of this I’ve been able to start the bike. Thought it was my starter relay but still having the same issue. The bike turns over just fine. I’m not getting the click from the relay when I hit the starter switch though. I’m thinking that’s going to be the problem
No clicks/fuel pump usually means low voltage (battery issue) at least in my experience with motorcycles. Is your stator/rec working? You can test it by using a voltmeter to make sure the battery is recharging while the bike is running
@@MotoCos88 actually through all the troubleshooting I did, the issue I had was caused by the "SteelMate" motorcycle alarm. I just removed it and put everything back to normal. Now it stats right up!
@@ItsPoppaB ahhhhhh! I had installed an alarm on my 2nd bike after my first one was stolen, and it would drain my battery so I eventually removed it and it was my fix in the past. I'm glad your up and running solid now!

Good video, I really liked the method you use to keep the mic in place
This sushi chef is pretty damn good with bikes
Yo my man My bike has been sitting for about 2 and a 1/2 years and I've been having this problem and this right here I believe will be my 2nd relay To be changed on it but I followed your instructions on here and it actually worked now I just got to buy a new relay lol thank God they're cheap In price and not expensive
Brooo huge thankss for the video u literally made my bike start right up!!! U are a fu***** mechanic!!!
Just changed my now it works , well done for making the video life saver!!!
You sir are a super star legend, thought i was going to have to change the starter !!!!!!! Thankyou
Can confirm is a legend now I don’t have to cry
If you have no power at all. Check the relay fuse. It's right on the relay. Usually a big 30amp fuse (some come with a spare)
If it doesn't turn the starter motor then listen to what this dude says 🤙
Good call, this is a direct result of bean counters telling the Engineers the tried and true materials are too expensive and to make it cheaper. What is happening inside the solenoid is the contact surfaces either wear through or are so burned that they no longer make contact due to pitting and carbon build up. Being a sealed unit there is no way of being able to clean the mating surfaces for a few hundred more starts. Replacement is the only option.
Thank you! My 06 Zx10r just did that exact thing to me a few days ago. I'm gonna troubleshoot this way. It sound like my exact problem with my bike
Give it a try! If you can, be sure to check the voltage on the battery. When testing the relay and starter motor, it needs a certain amount of voltage to turn over. Just keep that in mind before spending a bunch of money on things that may not be the problem like I did :P
Gotcha! Thanks for helping me out. Much appreciate brotha!!
That was clear and fixed my issue. I was getting the same clicking and no start.
Great video, followed the exact same steps to replace the relay on my GSR 750. Worked great.
Thank you. Just got my bike fixed after watching this video. Much appreciated.
Wat was It br
@@mikemyyers821 It was the starter relay fuse (green with #30 on it)
nicely done! going to have to give that a go on a dr 650. she clicks but won't start. was going to pull the starter but will check that relay first.
Took you over a year to figure that out? Ok, now you have it fixed, get out and enjoy that beautiful weather you have there!
I been havin this problem with my Triumph Daytona and I figured this out just a few days ago. Pity I didn't see this video earlier, would have saved me a pointless trip to the mechanic and him telling me I need a new battery (which I bought for no reason 🤦🏾♂️)
Glad I saw this video though...confirms my theory. Thanks man.
Was it the relay?
thank you so much... same issue on my 2016 Kawasaki zx-10r... $15 dollar part verse $150 starter and pain in the ass install! I was like START when I watched this! Keep Ridin' bro!
Thank you🙌🏼
Had a similar problem and finally got mine to start after watching your video and messing with my bike
Im sooooo happy this video helped!! I was depressed because the relay went out about 4 months after I bought the bike and felt like I got stooped! Glad you're up and running! Safe riding!!
Great video, on my case my bike wouldn’t start after I bridged the 2, I replaced my starter motor and bike started right up!
Did it still click when you replaced the relay
OHM's LAW. Look it up.

That seems to be right:)
Thanks for this vid, had a sticky starter on my MT09, as a result it fried the relay, this video had me sorting the problem in a few minutes!
Cheers!! So happy to hear that this video helped!!
Congrats on 100, Bro
Thanks! I want to add more to this channel! Just dont know what type of content works besides fixes lol
Bro you just save me i was having a headache becouse my 04 gixxer 750 wasnt turning on ... thank you thank you thank you 😊
I’m in a similar issue as this.
Well done. Have exactly the same symptons with a CBX1000/6 Honda. Thank you. Parts in the mail.
master blaster happy to have helped! Safe riding friend!
Thanks for this bro I've been trying for ever to figure out this problem as soon as I tried the screw driver trick it finally tried to turn over.
Experiencing a similar problem with my XR650L currently. Thanks for your input bru
Made sure you had 1000 subs🙂 it said 999 and im proud to be the 1,000 sub😁
Thanks for the video !!!
I fixed my motorcycle problem which had same issue and it worked. After couple of weeks I’m encountering the same issue after replacing OEM starter relay. I have a brand new battery as well. Any suggestions 😢?
Fixed her! Thanks for the vid. Turned out I had the same problem and was an easy fix! Cheers!
I’m thinking my starter is bad because I replaced the selenoid and it still makes a single clicking sound when I try to turn it on. Can it also be the crankshaft position sensor? Someone told me a bad crankshaft position sensor has the same symptoms as a bad starter
First time and I’m SUBSCRIBING, Lol, easy to understand, I’m try this on my bike right now
Ay bro I'm working on this right now 05 fz6 just getting a click on ignition. Fully charged battery and load tested good. Gonna try bridging the starter relay, I ordered a new one too. But it'll rule out the motor. Bike has 56,000 miles. Thanks 🙏🤘
Thanks for the video bro. this is exactly what was wrong with my bike. now to replace the relay.
Like the other comment, you might be able to repair it. Try taking it apart before buying it? The springs might have corrosion which will block the contacts to close the circuit. I should have checked mine before buying a new one, but it works so Im not complaining! Glad this video helped though, brother. Safe riding!
@@MotoCos88
I have a hyosung gt 650 and is making the same clicking noise and so is it definitely the starter relay that causes that problem.
@@simdoran8516 Did you try bridging the terminals on the relay? I hope that the video helps!! Safe riding friend!
Definitely a big help!!, this video helped me out with the same issue! My new switch should be here today. Thanks!!!
Thanks bro.......I think I might have the same problem. Covid season.....left the bike standing untouched in the garage all year. Smh 😭 time to see if this works.
Same bro...
Any luck?
Thank You MotoCos88, have a good day.
For slow cranking and starting problems if the battery is good then check your main ground wire, take it off, clean the connections good. Be careful with aftermarket parts, they may be cheap but may not last or worse the relay may stick closed like mine did.
Hey man? Your video helped me fix my bike. Thanks a lot!
did mine tonight. Cant get the rubber sleeve to go back on for anything!
Thank you sir, well explained in simple terms 👍😊
MotoCos88 Still havent got it fixed :/ i think it needs a new starter relay, which i will try and source this week. But for now - screwdriver sparks!!
Update - ordered new relay, bike still wont start without bridging terminals :( im thinking its the ignition switch?
Thanks dude me too haha
nice one. i had a similar problem with my CBR. firring up like a trooper now.
Starter relay due tomorrow... Fingers crossed she fires up!!! Thanks for the video very helpful! 🤞
Update: so the new relay was out in but still the same.. buzzing sound.. any idea what you would have checked next? Starts sometimes but mostly now it's like this?.. thanks for any help...
Thanks for this. My son's Street Triple 675 has the same symptoms. Will give your test a try.
Great Video I did the same thing to my motorcycle and it’s working fine now. Thank you for making that Video very helpful. 👍👍👍
Im so happy to hear that!! Safe riding!
thanks a lot buddy, it's definitely the relay what's broke on my bike 👍👍👍
So what you do is bridge the two terminals on the actual relay itself? Not bridging between the actual battery or anything
Looks like you’ve helped a lot of people with this video I hope it fixes my problem. My bike sounds just like yours when I push the start button. One click. I’m hoping it’s just the fuse in there but I doubt it.
Any luck??
@@MotoCos88 it’s the starter I picked up a used one for $40
Thanks for the video!
Good stuff bro! Thanks for having that video I was looking for. Having the same issue on same bike. Hoping it’s just the relay.
Thanks for leaving the love! Was it the issue for you?
@@MotoCos88 actually through all the troubleshooting I did, the issue I had was caused by the "SteelMate" motorcycle alarm. I just removed it and put everything back to normal. Now it stats right up!
@@ItsPoppaB ahhhhhh! I had installed an alarm on my 2nd bike after my first one was stolen, and it would drain my battery so I eventually removed it and it was my fix in the past. I'm glad your up and running solid now!
MotoCos88 thanks, appreciate it!
Thanks brother, I'm back on the road again. I highly appreciate it
2006 Yamaha Royal Venture Cruiser
Got a similar issue on my MT09... I'll try this and if it works you're a freaking hero... Be back later
Subscribed to all you Insta accounts and UA-cam. Thanks mate...
Did it work?
This is awesome. Thank you for taking the time to make this
I have the Same problem! I just ordered a new relay, I just have to wait now before I can replace it:)
Any luck?
@@MotoCos88 it was my start engine itself, so after i replaced it, the bike worked perfectly
I have similar problem but mine just makes the click noise already put in a new relay still the same might it be the starter?
Thank you buddy. You saved my time and money. All the best. Regards👍🍻
When you pulled the fuses from the old relay, did you check them ??? Could the problem have been a blown fuse all along ??? Cheers, Steve.
That was the first thing I did lol I usually start with that when it comes to electric work. Then troubleshoot the system in order from the batter.
When you bridge the bolts , was it the bolts of the starter relay?
Thank you!! I hope it works for me tomorrow! My bike won’t even turn on the electronic screen on. Bikes been sitting for a year. Got a new battery and nothing.
Carlos Isais I know how it feels!!! Be sure to check the fuse within the relay!! I recently helped someone and all they needed was a new 30amp fuse! $1 fix haha please let me know how it goes tomorrow!
It was the fuse!! Hahaha. I had a chat with the guy at chaparral motor sports and he said I was on the right track. However, the old relay fuse housing was too loose and finicky, so I just replaced the whole thing. Cost 94 dollars.
I’m just happy I didn’t pay the dealer $400 bucks. Thank you soo much, you saved my ass with this video
Carlos Isais dude!!! So happy you got it running!! Safe riding brother!!
Very good video 👍✨💯
