Triumph Street Triple Starting Issues

- Strange issue with my Street Triple R - initially thought it was a battery issues but now believe it's a starter motor issue, possibly something more serious?
***UPDATE***
I have taken the bike in for a service at a Triumph Dealer - They checked the battery and found that even though it was reporting the correct voltage they found that the battery itself was only operating at 40% of its total capacity.
However, this was not really the main issue, simply replacing the battery would have fixed it temporarily but the actual cause of the battery being damaged and it not starting correctly was down to charging system regulator-rectifier, when hot it does not function correctly and overcharges the battery.
I am hoping this has fixed and will keep you guys updated - Авто та транспорт
STILL, WE DO LOVE THAT BIKE...
I love my wife's Streety (2013R) but this issue is really hard to crack.
My wife is a beginner so stalling the bike may happen more often. However, I can not let her ride along (or alone) with that issue.
Later it happened also when she switched off the engine normally.
She used the bike during her driving lessons (we are in Germany), so THIS was some additional stress on top.
What I have done so far:
* replacing the battery (first to LiFePo then to GEL) -> problem came back
* replacing the Sprag Clutch -> problem came back
* replacing the magnet switch -> problem came back
* taking out the starter and overhaul it -> engine turning was faster, but the problem came back
* checking the cable (battery minus to the engine) -> problem came back
* replacing the r/r -> for the first time I thought problem solved but my wife was telling me, it has happened again
* switching from automatic cam chain tensioner to a manual one (because after stalling the bike I always was able to run/start the bike but it made awful rattle noise)
* replacing the stator -> maybe today....
We bought a jump start kit and IF it happens, we attach it to the battery and the engine starts within a second. So it must be an electrical issue.
At least we can help ourselves with the jump start kit.
I also measured the current while switching the engine on/off, cranking etc.
* When you turn the machine off, the engine needs some 30 secs+ until the current really goes down.
* You hear that "sending a fax to the UK-noise" and after a couple of secs you hear a relais switching.
* After that, the current flow goes down.
* Starting the engine the current was around 80A. -> normal
* With the engine off I had only some 150mA running. -> I assume that is a normal value since there is some electronic running in the background.
* Cold start never was an issue.
STILL, WE DO LOVE THAT BIKE...
did you find the issue ?
Thank you for uploading this video. Atleast it made me feel slightly better knowing that it is not only my bike which behaves this way.
I had this same prblm on my STR 2012. Its the Starter Motor. Replaced it. No issues for last 2yrs.
Had exactly the same problem. After disconnect the battery for a few minutes, it works sometimes and i thought it was the software. So i gave my bike to the dealer, so he can check this. Finally he replaced the battery, since then (6 months) i had no more issues.
Same issue on my 2014 speed triple R. Went for a spin today, filled up after 30 mins and it wouldn't start, a mate came with some jump cables running off his van and it got me home. Left it for a few hours and it started fine. Turned it off and it started fine again. Got a new battery in May, this issue has been going on a about 2 months on and off. I'd rather not need to get a jump every time I fill up!
I have a street triple with the same issues. If it's hot and you shut it off , it will crank very weak...it might not start at all.
When that happens .Try holding the throttle open while cranking it. This has worked for me before.
i just booked my 2018 street triple ....waiting desperately for it....😍😍😍😍
from looking at all the comments, I think 100s if not 1000s of triumphs have this problem including mine , it does seem to go away if you leave it an hour or two !!! and its not a dead battery
Right
I experience the same problem with the engine. when he is warm and I turn it off he does not want to start anymore. when the engine has cooled down it starts again without problems. can I have the starter motor overhauled or should a new one be added. if a new one needs to have a serial number than the improved version?
A very similar thin happened to me, my 2012 started doing the same, it turned out the voltage regulator & stator were on the way out. The voltage regulator failed and blew a winding in the stator but it was still putting out some voltage. Be aware that when your charge system starts failing, some of the bikes sensors may not pick up the correct voltage and other issues can arise. I had some crazy erratic idle problems with the ICV randomly bumping idle up to 4K or 2K depending on its mood, once the charge system was fixed all the crazy idle problems stopped.
How you fixed mine was also no idle and riding belw 3 rpm its miss fire 2nd starting issue if the bikes was hot not starting 😕
I had a problem not disimilar to this with my 2002 sprint ST.
Riding was fine untill i noticed a slight hesitation on opening the throttle when either changing gear or when pulling away from the lights, untill it became difficult to start, then wouldn't start at all. I had just serviced the engine, new oil & filter, air filter, plugs etc... when I found a disintegrating plug coil. I replaced this thinking it would solve the issue but no!
So I dug a little deeper and discovered the idle air conrtol valve body was cracked. Upon removal I found it wasn't just cracked, it was broken around one of the fixing bolt holes and wasnt sealing at all, letting more air into the engine than it needed and causing the problem.
I have heard that the idle air control valve can cause problems when it gets dirty causing it to become sticky and making it jam in place or give erratic starting and performance problems, particularly when the engine is hot.
When my (second hand) replacement arrived, I made sure it was showroom clean with some Carb and throttle body cleaner. and it hasnt been a problem since.
Battery problems such as a weak or old battery can give starting problems but this is usually caused by the charging system not being up to the job especially on older machines. Mine was constantly melting alternator connecting plugs as the wiring was not up to the job in the first place cutting power to the charging system but not giving a low chagre indiciator for some reason!. this needs checking out if you suddenly have this issue. Mine was cured by bypassing the charging wires to the battery from the rectifier with heavier gauge wire and an extra in-line fuse, and fitting a higher ampage rated connector to the alternator wiring.
Regulators are also a problem as the wiring then puts extra strain on them as well as the poor choice of mounting points for the units. The OE regulators are not really a good enough Quailty in the first place. They need a good air flow to stay cool and exessive heat Kills regulators!
Plug coils also give problems on higher mileage (or kilomitage 🤔) machines and need regular inspection. these are much easier to obtain than the idle valve bodies as triumph no longer supply them for old machines like mine, but the coils are everywhere!
There's a valve that opens the butterflies, actuator,I had trouble with mine sticking, the mechanic couldn't get the tick over set after new plugs.
Seems to be fine in normal use, just plays up very rarely when stalled now
I have had the same issue. Got my diagnostics kit out. Plugged it in and its ready error code "ignition coil 1, 2 and 3 malfunction" can be a short in the wires or a loose wire. Does not like a hot start at all.
I already have a new stator and regulator put in before this issue occurred which ruled that out for me.
Same happens to me on my 2007 speed triple multiple times with first replacing new battery then next year rectifier and battery then next year stator and new battery. Now after one season the battery is dead again
I ordered new one but this time it's going to be 12Ah not 10 all the new ones coming 10Ah but in owners manual it says battery must be 12Ah that's my last chance lol
I own my bike for 11 years and I have changed 8 battery already plus 2 regulators and one stator. Good job Triumph!!!
Did it work or still the same?what happen to your bike now mine is also new batt but starting like this happen to me after 30 mins ride i turned off and wont start again after a minutes the coolant was on the floor and an hour i tries to start and it works i dont know what is the problem of this fucking bike
I’m starting to have that issue with mine stalled it and it’s having a hard time turning over but it turns over and runs, did you figure out what the problem was?
any 2019 Street triple R with this problem?
Wow this same exact thing happened to me on my 2012 STR. I was leaving work on the freeway and it stalled out and wouldn’t start up 30mins later I was able to start it and get back home. Was sooo pissed and still don’t know what happened to make it not want to start.
I've had the exactly the same issue with mine, what was the problem and how did you fix it please
Hi, this happened to my 13 street R after I stalled or after a long ride. I dont think its the battery because I charged it the day before. Let me know if you know the fix for this.
my street triple 2013 r had exactly the same starting problem as your bike , i finally fixed it ,just by a new battery
Just came across you video re :starting.. I had a similar problem with my 2014 Striple 675R...Turned out a new battery fixed it. I got four years out of the original and replaced it with the same Yuasa type. The difference was startling, it cranked into life immediately instead of groaning..... hope you got it sorted
Has it stalled from that point on or are you satisfied after the battery change?
The actuator kicks in like a choke when you use ignition btw, hence it opening the valves, because it's all linked (ecu) I'm guessing it nerfs the ignition system that's why it sounds flat.
I'm no mechanic btw it's just guesswork from my experience hope it helps
Just back from mine letting me down (thankfully near the pub). One rotation and then nothing with all lights illuminated. Took the battery off, cleaned the terminals and the same thing. Jump started the bike and it sprung into life but it ticked for a couple of seconds when it was running. I stalled it after not being able to find the headlight switch and it started strongly as if nothing had happened. Very confused! I had the same issue when i first bought the bike and its been fine for a year until now. Dealers looked at it back when i first bought it and said it was battery terminals but i get the feeling this is not the case. 2019 Street RS with just over 5k miles on it, hardly an old or high mileage bike. Does anyone have any fixes for the issues?
Had this on mine. Turned out to be the cells in the gen battery rupturing. Sometimes had voltage sometimes not. Common on a lot oc bikes
I've got this same issue now with my 2014 Daytona 675R. I have a CTEK XS0.8 +\- cable installed (so I don't have to remove the seat) and charge it every 2 weeks. It has a newish battery as well and I was leaning towards replacing the starter motor being the solution. Is it definitely the battery?
No, if your battery is new then its likely the regulator rectifier or the alternator - such a common problem, i've since sold it as I had other issues with cam chain tensioner etc. Bought a GSR750 instead and very happy with it.
I had identical problems (2013 STR). Charged the 4yr old Motobatt battery, left it for a week and then took it to my friendly mechanic (off the bike) who did a health check on it and said it was healthy. Followed forum guides to check the outputs of the RR and all was well. Concluded that the bike MUST have a charging issue, but only when hot so made plans to change the stator. Before buying anything, the bike was due an MOT, so I got the same mechanic to check the battery on the bike. This time it was rated at 15% health! Had them fit a new Yuasa. All has been well ever since (3 months and counting). What surprised me is that a battery will last much longer on my other bikes so either the Motobatt wasn't the best battery or I still have a problem with the charging system on my bike that will kill this battery early too. Time will tell.
Any update on this? Was it purely a battery issue or was it something else?
mine does this ,have you found whats causing it yet,
I think there are some bad starter motors where the windings begin to short circuit when they get hot. When this happens the starter motor is like an exceptionally heavy load on the battery and the battery can’t deliver the power. You can see the display light dim right down so that means there is a power issue. You need to put a current clamp meter on the starter cable and check the current being drawn in this condition. It should be around 70Amps. I had a similar problem on my Ducati and the motor was pulling around 400Amps. Changed starter for decent Denso brand and now ok.
What was the problem in the end? was it the regulator for voltage or the battery? I got same issue now and service tells me my battery is faulty ? should i trust them or should i take youtube in consideration ? :))
any updates on this mate?. Has the problem fixed?
ive just taken delivery of a 675 recently and have a similar issue. Rode it round to my garage, tried to start it after parking it up and wouldn't work. appears jump/bump starting it fixes it
I have an 08 model that had the same issues. Upon contacting the local triumph dealer i was informed that the regulator rectifier needed to be replaced under a factory recall. I live in Oz.
Sleven Kalevra mine has the same issue. But now it wont even crank over. Im in Perth, hopefully the dealer here will replace the rectifier.
My 08 Daytona has had the rectifier replace under warranty (factory recall) and I'm now having this problem many years later. It also happening when it cold outside (-3 to 6C).
Hey guys, can anyone put down a good after market regulator/rectifier and stator since there are many issues with OEM parts. Thanks.
Any update?
Possibly ignition coils firing intermittedly It can crop up when it's hot, and disappear when it's oold. Also check to make sure your fuel pump is good. Test it for pressure, and also run the bike at high RPM on the freeway and see if the engine sputters out.
OMG... I have the same EXACT issues. Replaced the battery... twice. Was in the shop twice.. no one can figure it out. Mine will start and can drive it for a couple of errands, then that happens... have to get a jump. But, the next time, after its cold, it will start again. then I thought, maybe it’s a safety mechanism if the water level is low. It was a bit low and I thought I solve the problem... NOT. I have had two people now tell me it might be the stator. Can’t afford the dealer...
My bike shuts down on the second gear after I reach 40 km/h or higher speed i don't know my does it injectors problem ?
Soooo i am comfused....i ahave the same isue on street Triple R( model 11) everything charghing well, in normal conditions...After a few minutes and the bike was heat and when te lights are on(i have a switch) the charging is about 12.5-12.7... So is the strator the problem? or something else?
Tips The strator are fixed twice ( fully wrtaped)
Giannis Kritikos it could be the regulator rectifier or alternator.
Hi, Yes thanks for that video. Glad it’s not just me. I bought a 2013 Triumph Street Triple 765 R last weekend. And to my absolute disappointment, on my third outing. I had this exact thing happen to me with the stalling. However, I managed to get it started again pretty quickly. Parked at my destination and a few hours later, now the Dash won’t turn on at. Alarm light still blinking. Does anyone have a resolution to this issue yet? Surely if there’s enough of the same problem, someone has cracked it?
2013 765 street triple? Either you have the year or the cc wrong there mate. 👍
take it for a ride leave the bike running for a while and check the voltage when the fans kick in, my old gsxr used to kill rectifiers when it got hot. i don't think it's the starter motor as it cut off when running, it's exactly how my bike used to die on me. hopefully this helps if not there's always fire lol
HAD THIS PROBLEM ON MY 09 TURNED TO BE CLUTCH SWITCH ON THE BARS CLEANED IT ALL OK NOW.
Same thing been happening to mine, I bought it a few months ago, fine during summer but since the weather got colder it's not started on me 3 times, managed to get a jump start but today off to buy a new battery, hoping its the battery and nothing else as I don't have a battery reader to check..
Any look with new battery I just brought one second hand in the summer it was ok now in the cold battery keeps losing charge
I had the same issue on my 2010 Street-R, I stalled it and when I hit the starter button it made the same sound as yours (starter motor not turning) and didn't start. Rather than turning the key off/on I just flicked the ignition killswitch off/on and it started immediately, not sure if it was just a fluke or something but might be worth giving it a go.
btw. mine is just past the 12k mark and hasn't had the valve adjustment done either. I did read somewhere that it may cause starting issues.
Tried that... in FL. Humidity is bad for electrical/electronics. Thought it might be a connection issue in the start switch or kill switch... neither.. still stumped!!
I just got 2018 st R and pulled out off a dealer stalled 2 tines on the third time when stalled same issue wouldn't start like dead battery jumped it it's fine crazy bike only has like 5 miles on the speedometer
I have the exactly same problem with mi 2012 street triple. What was the problem?
Problem i think is with the stator
Any updates on your triple? Mine is behaving the exact same way. I bought a new battery thinking that's what it could be because my dash goes really dim and turns off when i hit the starter. Most of the problems happen when the bike is really warm... let me know what you find!

Ok having this problem today. What is the fix for it?
The fix for me was a new reg/rec, new alternator and new battery. It's such a common issue that I am disappointed with Triumph for not acknowledging it, it's why I will never buy a Triumph again.
I fixed this issue on my 2013 street triple r. Check where the battery negative cable connects to the the motor frame. Mine was loose. Tightened it and problem went away. You need to remove seat and lift tank to check this. Previously had 2 new batteries and lots of mechanic time with no solution.
Hi! I also have the 13’ street triple R
Recently got a new battery, installed it, all lights turned on, clutch in and right when I turn on the switch. It died! Is this what happend before?
Checked whether the pickup coil is ok?
Not sure where that is but I will have a google, thanks
Just bought my Striple 660 S brand new, I am experiencing the same thing. Only have 438k on the clock. Something tells me that I should've bought an R6!!!
🏍💨Seems like all the triumph triples can have this issue when hot, `but no real problem to cause me inconvenience in five years of daily ridding❗❕

Of course this is a warkaround and it is not normal
replaced starter motor I have not solved
I had the exact same problem with my Triumph Street Triple solved with the battery I indicated above
This battery has the same dimensions as the standard one but delivers twice the power
it was not born for the street but works great
After about two months perfect hot starts
I hope it lasts Also because I was going crazy
Just got this problem so is the fix the charging system regulator-rectifier?
Not sure what the fix actually was - but the parts I changed were:
- New Reg Rec
- New Alternator
- New battery
After getting a new battery it was better but not fixed. After getting the new alternator it was fine for 2 weeks. Then got a new reg-reg and it was all OK.
Either way, I sold the bike soon after as it was the worst bike I have ever owned for reliability. 3 months after fixing these issues the oil pump failed. Then the Cam chain tensioner failed.
I will never buy another Triumph ever again, their after care was awful and they fail to recognise this as a widespread problem, everyone I have spoken to has had this issue.
I have similiar but more mysterious problems with starting my SPEED. Do you have any idea what can cause mine problems? Video in my channel. Thanks for any advice!
happened to me a couple of times (2013)...just wait for 20/30 minutes the will start normally...
It's a classic stalling issue faced in many many street triples in India due to dusty conditions which triumph is unable to solve. Throttle body cleaning is offered by triumph as a solution. For permanent resolution is to use manual idler. Check Indian videos about issue and solution...it may help if that's t real cause...
Where i can find the video??
any update dude? mine barely starts at times, I'm very fortunate that it has never failed to start yet but it's a struggle
Hey, not yet. Its getting looked at next week Wednesday (28th of June) including a full 12k miles dealership service so I will hopefully have an update then. The service includes valve clearance etc so I'm hopeful.
I have had stacks of issues, Im about to replace my second stator. It doesn't help that you can't tell the lights off when starting the engine up, neither did it help that the start of my terracing dear properly, because it takes a lot at the battery. I take about 5 mile trip, short trips always a problem. But quite frankly it's clearly a design problem. I think a few to many corners got cut. I've literally been using two batteries and rotating them. The amount of times I've been stranded!! I had my bike since 2011
Sam Rumbelow yup, it's put me off triumph for life. The dealers were not very helpful either. All and all a terrible experience. I'm now very happy with my suzuki gsr750.

Roger Guiney Mine just ended up being a bad battery 👍
TheSaneRider thanks for getting back I might get a new one to be safe I did let it die once in the winter.might have damaged it
Had exactly the same issue. Replaced the battery, didn't help at the end. Went to the garage, mechanic did all the tests and said the stator and regulator were both burned. So I decided to change them. Waiting to see result...STR 2009
Vladimir Spektor how did it end up?
What happened
Finally only the stator had to be changed, was a bit lucky there. The rotor was intact. All worked fine afterwards. I'm avoiding anything that touches the electrical circuit...heated grips, or extensions. I find my bikes system way too sensitive
Thanks, well mine might actually be a battery issue I hope I guess lmao
Im sure they recalled them all and changed the altenator windings. I know they did two that i saw myself after constnt jump starting
Hi , ive had same fault on both triumph explorer xrt 1200 and speed twin 1200 both exactly the same as this sold the xrt because of this and bought speed twin and that has the same problem its only done 360miles took it in to dealer and was told it was the ecu learning the way I ride ( what a load of rubbish ) took it back again and spoke to technician and they ended up replacing starter motor which happens to be same across the range !! It turns out the starter motor is earthed through the casing and as it expands with heat it lessens the contact area lessening the earth contact patch . Triumph have a recall for it in America the techy told me but won't acknowledge it hear in uk !!!!!! Answer is to keep onto the dealer !!!!! Hope that helps
I'd contact Triumph directly
Happened to me.
Starter motor-Carbon brush is out and pending for change
Happen to me also and when i came home i tried to start again but it wont after a minute the coolant was on the floor and i tried to start again after an hour and it works im so stress to this triumph

I had the same problem, but I solved trying another process, I change the battery and the problem was there, so I cleaned up the engine, taking out the spark and using a product (here in Brazil is call CAR80) in fact is a Carbon off......I leave the product there, for a night, and in the morning, I use a vaccum to suck the product.....after that, problem was solved.....hope help you guys!!!!!
Thanks for your recommedation.
I will give this a try.
Ive had similar problems especially if ive been going hard, stop for fuel and then bang ..but lucky enough for me it starts in the end so far
Roger Guiney same here, did you ever find out what was going on or how to fix it?
Any luck? Looking for fix
will burch I did a lot of reading and found that it’s a common issue for the oem rectifier. There’s some r/r that people upgrade to but I don’t remember the name of it. I’m going to take mine to the dealer and get it replaced under warranty

I had the same issue a month ago and replacing the stator did help but I suspect my r/r had issue too so I did some research and found that a lot of striple owners upgraded their r/r to a mosfet r/r which is said to operate at a lower temperature than the stock ones.
Hey, I'm having the same issue with my bike. Was this resolved? Was changing out the rectifier the solution? Any input would help. Thanks.

I'm going to try a few things - firstly some Redex.
Garages seem to be fully booked for a few weeks but I am going to drop it off at a Triumph specialist in a week and I will let you know what happens.
Thanks, in my case it ain't the battery or the starter. The battery is new sinds a few months. Perhaps it's losing power somehow...
It will start. Give it gas while pushing the start button. Try it.
And?
Reg/rec and alternator, common failures on these triumphs.
WARNING!! You MUST have plenty of grunt in your battery with triumph triples. Continued starting with a weak battery risks shredding your sprag clutch starter mec. Super nasty, expensive repair fishing broken gear teeth out of your sump and praying to god that you found all the bits 🥴

Hello, it's been many years since your last comment here but I'll give it a go any ways. I just bought a Speed triple 09 1050 and it's not charging the battery. I tested the stator for electricity output and it seems to be working fine. I just bought a new rectifier and hoping that will solve the problem. If anyone has more experience with this issue please let me know. Thank you and ride safe.
I know it's really obvious but have you tested the battery? Some batteries report they charge but the actual health of the battery means its depletes within minutes. Other than that it seems your checking the right things, I would have guessed the reg rectifier to be the culprit if the battery is fine. Goos luck.
@@fabscams4136 Fabs Cams yes, the battery seems to be fine, charging fine I mean. But you are correct, I didn't check the battery since it looks like it is a new one. I'll test the battery as well. Thanks a lot.
@@hermeslpm2597 Did you find the issue? My 09 STR is cranking but won’t start as well. It’s a nightmare and I’ve already spent so much money trying to find the issue
@@joshvieira9976 it's the stator or the rectifier. I changed the rectifier on mine, cheapest fix, but then it went bad again because the stator wasn't good. I ended up changing both the stator and rectifier. And lastly selling the bike, too much headache although is a very nice bike.
Problem solved. It does not like going to work. 😂
12.36v is not that much and you should have 14.30-40v at 4k rpm
It wasn't a battery issue, the battery was replaced. It was the reg rec and alternator
@@fabscams4136 yeah these bikes have these electrical issues, i have a 2011 street and my regulator was switched years ago by triumph
Hi,I bought from someone a triumph Street Triple R from 2013 and he gave me the bill for changing the spark plugs, filters. . ..and today I stopped the motorcycle and I could not start it. .. pushed nothing. . .but I noticed that it also had a negative role and alarm. There was no sign of life anymore. . ... so I left it and the alarm turned on, then I turned off the alarm and and it seems like he wanted to start but he could not so a biker checked the battery and noticed that I had not enough juicebattery so I took from him he started, not so fast but started, AND now i have on check engine. anybody knows what might eventually be.
Engine light can probably be ignored as you must have tried to start it several times unsuccessfully which will make the engine light come on. If you cold start your bike, let it warm up for 10 minutes, turn it off, start it again the light should reset, if it doesn't then yes there is a problem which needs to be looked at.
If your bike started after a jump start then it does sound like it could be a weak battery or you may have the same problem I had where the regulator-rectifier needed to be replaced.
To test it, take the bike out for a 30-40 minute ride, turn it off and try to turn it back on again, if the start motor kicks but doesnt start then wait 30 minutes with the bike off, see if it starts after 30 minutes, if it does then it's the same problem I had with the regulator-rectifier. It will cost about £300 to repair with parts and labor.
Thanks for the answer. ... I did this after the encountered problem I drove 24 km till home. check engine is stil on
it can be just an error?? or it can be a major problem. . .. can i use my motorcycle? or better not
No, don't ride - just turn it on for 5-10 minutes, don't ride it. turn it off, turn it back on for 2-3 minutes, turn it off again and then turn it on, it should reset. if it doesn't you will need to get a diagnostic machine to see what code it is.
thanks for the advice, if the error persists I will return with a reply on Tuesday. . then the service will be open
What’s amazing is this video is years old and TRIUMPH STILL HAVE THE WORST ELECTRONICS out of any premium machine. My 2022 won’t start at all out of nowhere. Triumph are expensive garbage.
I hate this bike.... so much time wasted trying to fix an issue that's been around for decades, and Triumph didnt do shit with it. Going back to Japanese reliability...
New battery ,battery leads solve it bud if it’s not the regulator or stator
