As outlined by our shared uncle Rick Beato, they lined the drum studio with plywood. That's the echo and also what makes it sound massive. That's why 02:45 doesn't sound clonky enough.
There were also 2 x 30 inch one off custom subwoofers (from Mitsubishi?) in the wall behind the kit and the drums were fed back into them to make the plywooded room even more lively and energetic. The live room remains in that studio, but the subwoofers have been taken out.
The kick drum Metallica had for this era and a bit after is wonderful. It was so thick and fat, but also with that cut through and slight tick over the top. It was exactly the same live when I first saw them in 99. I was drunk every time I saw them after that, so God knows what it sounded like. My recordings always aimed for this type of sound, but we never quite pulled it off.
During the intro when playing those fills on side toms, Lars also hit the hi hat via leg pedal on 2s and 4s and during the entire song, Lars hit hard on every accents on the open hi hat making the sound more wide and open. If you want to play thsi song like how it is suppose, it is actually pretty tiring.

Hey Christian! We did not use any samples in this video. The reverb might sound like it but the sound you hear is just the mics and no additional samples at all. 👍🏻
@@ArtOfDrumming Wow, so it's just played harder and with a different eq. Incredible result. The attack is clicky and the body of the reverb is just perfect. Good job!

The production is absolutely first rate. I respectfully disagree about Justice though. Great songs, but it sounds like it was recorded in a metal garbage bin.
Insane, man. These drum tones are extremely spot on. Which is cool, because the original recording had a sampled snare drum tone and this gets super close to the original.
Most underrated and slept on drum kit of the last 20 years. My rock tour has outlasted a Pearl Masters, Tama Superstar and Premier Genista which have all been sold while the yamaha remains.
On VHS A year and a half, you can see Lars using a SABIAN hi-Hat, and Ludwig toms, check it out. Specially on Nothing Else Matters, you can see more clearly
fun fact, Lars didn't record with the white Tama starclassics, he used Gretsch Maples rented by a company called the drum doctor. The kicks are 24" and pretty shallow, that's why it sounds big but short decay. The toms are from the other set and literally had floor toms mounted on the rack for that massive sound. The drums just sound that way in the drum room they tracked in. They also mic'ed the Kick through a PA to give it more bottom end and excite the room. The snare is a Tama bell brass. Good luck recreating that sound without those components, Bob Rock and his team of geniuses and they also modified the acoustics to reflect even more. It's a super expensive drum sound and anyone that tries to recreate it usually won't even come close.
Mr Ulrich used to play on very large floor Toms... you can see it on the enter sandman performance in the mtv awards when he played the big white drums...
you're joking right, show me any song where lars plays anything other than single stoke sticking patterns? just to give you an example of technical have a look at this: ua-cam.com/video/29-2XmadcKs/v-deo.html

Black album has the best drum sound ever, tu**in awesome. The snare on Sad but True, greatness. Bob Rock on the black album, doesn't get better than that
It’s apparent that Lars is not the most technically proficient drummer of his genre but he is PERFECT for MetallicA. Though he was never any Dave Lambardo he still has some pretty advanced drumming. Especially on Masters and AJFA. I ALWAYS loved his drum tone on the Black Album. I think a lot of the Lars hate came in with the St Anger album which yes, deserves some ridiculous. He’s still exactly the drummer Metallica needs.
@AoD: what currently available (retail) kit(s) would match the Yamaha Rock Tour? Apparently this series is no longer being offered. Just the regular Tour Customs?
Really great drum sound. I always naturally go.for this type of sound 😃 i usually use an Aquarian Superkick 2 on the bass drum though! My only suggestion would be to loosen the crash cymbals 😃 they look so crisp and new id hate for you to crack one 😅
First time I’ve seen the sound captured with actual drums and mics, nice work. Awesome sound! With the toms and bass drum, would the type of drums matter to capture the same sound, or is just the heads that matter?
Just like the Dr Feelgood album on this album samples or triggers were used and from that moment on their use became more frequent in metal or punk. It is not easy to reproduce that sound but it sounds similar .
Super great approach to the original sound. Would be nice if you guys used the Z Custom hats, those are the fat sound that fill all the beat and add more power to the snare.
my only way i was about to make Yamaha drums sound good, i took tha same approach as i did with Pearl, nothing but Evans but tha dude here made a yamaha drumset sound good with Remo more than what i ever could
Very well!!! It's awesone because if you would havetold methese were different drum I might not have found out. The only one giveaway would be the cymbals, they miss a but of ring
It’s so weird that I’m a huge fan of A Custom cymbals but they don’t seem to fit in here in this video as much as I would have liked them too. They are actually my favourite cymbals !!! Lars actually used 15" Sabian Rock Hats (that re-used on Hardwired to self destruct) eventhough he endorses Zildjian. Also always used 2x26" gretsch bass drums eventhough he endorses TAMA
Yeah, this happens a lot with musicians. They have deals where they publicly endorse certain brands and products, even if they don't always align with their personal taste behind closed doors. Doesn't mean they consider the stuff they endorse "bad", they just prefer other things when recording.
got it as close as can be!! :D :D in the studio lars recorded on a gretsch kit with big toms (which you can still hire if you book the same studio as they used). plus they used something like 50 mics all over the kit and room, including a neumann KM86 on the snare drum :) and there was some rudimentary samples applied to his kit as well in post-production, not many, but some :) one little known secret was that even though he's a zildjian endorser, the hi hat used on the record were 15 inch sabians (model unknown).
I would add some really heavy reverb, and most importantly gating. Make sure each drum has the proper amount of tail and cutoff to sound massive but controlled
Great vid, and info, but I also wish you would have went into the engineering side of it, too instead of just "bass drum mics, large and small phragm condensors." I wish I knew what you did and used, like go into notable eq adjustments, gates, compressors, saturation, parrallels, specific mics, mic distances, etc.
Or many other aspects of drumming. Joking aside, his drumming is perfect for the sound Metallica is going for. Which is the mark of a good drummer. Like it or hate it.

Agreed. The kit is close but not quite.

Those toms sound boombastic man!!!!!
Reverb trails are far too bright, that's the magic of the black album drum tones is that the ambience/reverb is very dark sounding.
Oh i love it! Lars always gets a bad rap. But so did Ringo. They both know what to play with what part of the song.
