Most important part is playing topless so the sound waves bounce off your skin and don't get absorbed by your clothing giving that crisp snapping sound
This is one of the first "sound like Travis" videos I've seen that is accurate. I'd recommend having just a wee bit more ring in that snare drum, but a A+ work.
A 21" or 23" Ride and Travis' magic combination of a 18" A-Custom Crash as well as a 18" A-Custom Projection Crash would have been the cherry on top. However, awesome job guys!!!
I bought the (non brilliant) 21" Zildjian sweet ride back in like 2004, 100% because of travis barker. still have it on my kit to this day, but i pretty much just use it as a crash. I always tell people it's the best crash i've ever played. i've gotten compliments from not only other drummer but also other guitar players etc. it blends sooo well with the rest of the kit and other instruments. it's very washy and has great dynamics. you can real wail on it or just tap on it and anything in between. thank you travis for making me get my favorite cymbal.
You know when something is iconic when, as a guitarist, you are scrolling though your suggested videos and you see this video start playing in silence..... and you stop and say, "Hey that's the intro to First Date!"
Great job. I’m a Travis barker fanatic. His drumming influenced me to the point where all the local bands in the area wanted me to play drums for them. I just expected this to be another half ass attempt at imitating his sound, but you absolutely nailed it.
@@ArtOfDrumming maybe it could be a multi part series where you take us through, sticks, heads, kits, and other individual parts like snares, cymbals, mics, etc...
travis is very influential in the circles i used to play in. i know at least three drummers obsessed with travis barker, right until this very day. they imitated his setup in pretty much the same way you see in this video. i was more into tom delonge. i still dream of that guitar he played back then. i used to get home from school and play guitar along to "enema of the state". with that said, i think this recreation is quite accurate! you can argue about all the small things as usual, but i'm feelin' this. fate didn't fall short this time.
please do part 2. His drum sound is a lot different now, take "forget me too" by machine gun kelly for an instance. thanks for the video, great as always
Was kinda looking for a Side Snare, as is seen so often on his kit (more of his later years though, so i understand, would've been interesting to hear and see tho :) )
Very good! I love his simplicity and energy. He just pulls it all off perfectly. I’d love to see the sound for the late Pat Torpey of Mr. Big please.❤️
Nice! I’m always liked how Travis tuned his snare which is a bit of a contrast to what you’d normally expect from a rock snare. Do Tré Cool next. Just to get Pascal to spike his hair and dye it bright green. 😛
please, at some point do a video on Takashi Kashikura, the drummer from the Japanese math-rock band 'toe' his sound and play are amazing, so expressive-he's easily among my favourite drummers
Hey rhynchocephalian - thanks for sharing your suggestion. To be honest I haven’t heard if him but now will definitely have a look. It’s always cool to get some fresh stuff infos like that!
In fact, Travis uses 2 different heads in the Take of your Pants and Jacket album....Emperor X coated for the heavy sound, and Controlled Sound in the higher snare songs :)
I've never really seen anyone actually do a great job at recreating Travis's sound. Many can play his beats properly, but no one plays with his insane technique or intensity so it never really sounds right. For a small guy he's one of, if not the hardest hitting drummer in punk.
Superb work once again guys. Love to hear/see in no particular order: Rage Against the Machine (Killing in the Name) Anderson Paak (Tints or Jet Black or JEWELZ or Am I Wrong or Come Down) Tool (Stinkfist) Queens of the Stone Age (No One Knows) Justin Timberlake (Like I Love You) James Brown (Super Bad or Get Up I Fell Like Being a Sex Machine) Red Hot Chilli Peppers (any song) Arctic Monkeys (R U Mine?) Jay-Z (Empire State of Mind or Show Me What You Got) Muse (Uprising) Vampire Weekend (A-Punk) Foo Fighters (My Hero) The Wombats (Let's Dance to Joy Division or Tokyo) Herbie Hancock (Chameleon) Madonna (Like a Prayer) Tears for Fears (Everybody Wants to Rule the World) Simple Minds (Don't You) Stevie Wonder (I Wish or Superstition or Master Blaster) The Police (Message in a Bottle or Roxanne or Every Little Thing She Does is Magic) I need to stop, this could go on for days.
Can you do Sleep Token's drum sounds from their Sundowning album next? Really cool drum sounds from that record especially from their snare! A good song to reference would be The Offering and another would be Take Aim.
Isn’t it funny though how so many of our kit configurations changed as soon as he blew up?… lol I know I’m guilty as hell! Like my drums got flat as tables and my cymbals went sky high… although to be fair, my toms are still pretty flat and very similar. I heard him say it was from his background in marching snare and drum line. There drums are always flat, and I guess he just adapted it to the kit. Than almost overnight the rest of us fallowed suit. 🤷🏼♂️
Overall this was really very close. But the one nitpick is also something I struggle with is getting the toms the same INYOURFACE level in the mix. That is so difficult.
With every sound recreation video, you guys should add the drums only like you did in a separate video with "in the air tonight. " Anyways, great content as always. Cheers
Hello vaughan, thanks for your feedback! By august we start releasing 2 videos instead 1 per week. We will then also release a playthrough video and gear reviews from every upcoming and past recreating videos

How did you like this recreation of Travis Barker's drum sound and which drum sound should we recreate next?
Decent. Great job guys.

Please do Where is My Mind by Pixies 🙏🏻
AVH!
Or how about Neil Peart’s Moving Pictures sound?
Most important part is playing topless so the sound waves bounce off your skin and don't get absorbed by your clothing giving that crisp snapping sound
💯😂 yes totally agree - the only thing what’s missing are the tattoos since the skin bounces the sound differently then

Just compared this to the original, thats really accurate, the original drums feel more used but this is as close as it gets 👏
