How to Remove Rusty Fuel Filter

  • Removing a fuel filter on a 2000 chevy silverado. The Fuel filter is located on the drivers side on the inside of the frame just below the front door. This particular filter had some serious rust on the nuts of the fuel line. I first tried to remove the nuts using an open ended wrench and just started bending the fuel line, and rounding off the nut. I later tried it again with a flare nut wrench. this and plenty of penetrating oil gave me the ability to get the filter off.

Guy, I want to thank you. I have a filter that is on a car from Ohio and has a lot of rust on the parts underside. The filter was rusted and stuck. I used the exact same thing you did and after soaking with the penetrating spray, it came right off.
Thank you man, I am 40 miles out in the country/woods and I would have been in trouble if I had not been able to get this off freely. Thanks again.

I just got mine to break free x 2. Whack estatic I am. It took me three days of off and on again soaking in stuff, krud kutter and Liquid Wrench. Wow, that is relief. Patience.

That sucks, hopefully you can get it off. I don't think I mention it in the video but one key to success is persistence, so just keep at it.

Amen to that! I have a 95 Tahoe and mine is not budging. I'm worried about damaging the line. I'm so pissed at Chevrolet for making these vehicles so difficult to do simple replacement jobs 😡😠😠

Started rounding off the nut with an open ended wrench so as soon as I can pick up a flare nut wrench its back under the truck. Thanks.

Mine looks a whole lot rustier than that it was a truck that seen a lot of gravel roads
I'm afraid to take mine off the fuel line looks like it might break if I even try
I don't know why the dang fuel filter isn't up underneath the hood like it should be
What do you think about running all fuel line hose from the tank all the way up to the tune port

My trucks fuel lines are so rusted, penetrating oil, and 2 wrenches, didn't work. I am looking at replacing entire fuel line from gas tank to tbi.

On my S-10 I got one end off and managed the unscrew the filter from the stuck end rather than try to turn the flare nut (the nut was rusted to the fuel line, not the filter). The one flare nut is still stuck and I’m here to figure out how I might free that up rather than put it back the same way.

    worst case scenario like me:
cut the fuel lines and use rubber hose with stainless clamps, you can add a filter in line easily with rubber tubing. get the gas rated and pressure rated tubing, stop busting knuckles and cut the line!!! trust me the fuel filter and lines were rusted together permanently

    • @baldeaglearrage3450

cut the filter instead and use a impact wrench on the nut

    • @ThisIsSolution

I am afraid but nothing to see what you are doing underneath the car. Torch would be useful
