Thanks for posting! Lot's of negative comments. Sometimes it's not about money it's about convenience. Consider those that live in small towns that can't just drive to the nearest store and purchase a fuel filter, and has to order it. This will relieve stress on the fuel pump temporarily until one receives their purchased item. The ones that throw money at problems will never understand the problems. Keep up the great work Error Code Guy, you are helping people.

It's $20 yes, but I don't want to keep blowing into a can, wasting gasoline to clean it. Time is money and I'm wasting money away if I'm spending this much time cleaning a stupid filter and using sandpaper on the gaskets, I've wasted 30 mins and gasoline. Sorry, my time is worth more than that.

If the Filter has to be removed to verify if it is bad you are doing the work anyway! Replacing it is not a bad thing - it will not hurt the vehicle to have a new one. The price is cheap enough as well. Although proper diagnosis is important - removing the fuel filter and reinstalling it - you are doing the work and for the money .. consider it a good practice. Every heard of the "Britian super bike"? Google it. It was built on these principles. A back yard bike that took on and beat the world. Some of you seem to mistake being smart with being cheap.

Thanks for the advise. Been about 10 years so it's time... Want to experiment with it a bit so will be trying some of these techniques to determine if the filter has been doing its job.
Just Replaced the Filter today. Will be testing the old filter over the next week see if my local fuel supply and my tank has been relatively clean meaning the filter has been on light duty or if its had more of a Severe Duty cycle...
I totally appreciate this. The fuel filter is just one item of many for me to troubleshoot. I hope I can check several issues without having to buy a new part ea time. Thanks
Watching again 3 years later. Still great stuff, and even makes more sense for automotive. Absolutely reverse clean and re-use the fuel filter if you suspect a dirty fuel tank. (If we could only blow it out too ) When satisfied all are clean THEN put on your new dandy filter. Heck yah ! ** I've become a stickler with cleanliness and anti-rust. Like to clean parts, including nuts and bolts, remove all grease with alcohol or some solvent, then when able prime and paint. : ) Yes lots of 'trouble' but it makes me feel good - for the next one. Or the next person who has to work on it. And did I tell you this, I despise lazy mechanics! Throwing stuff back on that's rusted, threads not polished or lubed, not using anti-seize, not keeping parts out of the dirt, grit, sand, allowing even ONE GRAIN of sand to get in places where it can ruin fine tolerances of parts - causing cross threading, destruction, early demise of valuable pieces --- just gripes me to no end.
As much as I like this dudes mind set, Ive done this for a while now myself but filters are only made to last so long, you can do this a couple times but after so long they just don't do anything anymore and you're doing this twice a month. Not worth it when I can replace it for $9
Yeah I don’t like the idea of there still being microscopic contaminants in my gas. a filter is something you want to be sparkly clean to keep other stuff clean
If you take the filter off, throw it in the trash, and it bounces off and re-installs itself back into the truck, then its still good. Same with pcv valves
My Nissan takes a $20 filter. I replaced with with the same size tubing, it's a clear filter for some Honda or lawn mower or something. Filters just fine, and costs $4 no or so. Fuel pressure is better and no negatives.
Thanks for the great advise & wealth of experience! I was doing food delivery for my grandma & ran out of gas. Now I'm having all the signs of a bad fuel filter. I have an 04 Kia Optima, so I have no idea what'll happen.
since you ran it out theres a good chance its not your filter and that its the fuel pump giving you the issues. the pump needs the fuel for cooling and lubrication. I hope the very best for you.
I never changed the fuel filter for the life of a car and never had any problem. As I was young I didn't even know it had a fuel filter. Now I'm older I replace all service parts as required, and I still don't have any problems.
That's not a good thing. Risk a $1500 fuel pump or injector replacement instead of replacing a $20 filter that's already removed? That's straight up stupidity.
I have a 1998 Buick LeSabre... having performance issues....I'm thinking the fuel pump because I don't hear a hum sound when I out the key in the ignition....we put starting fluid in the throttle body....and it started then stalled....does that mean for sure it's the fuel pump? Or try filter and relay?
Heck yeah, I believe in cleaning stuff and reusing it, especially like you were talking about, maybe you have a little trash in the tank, and you don’t want to buy 5 new filters.
I replaced mine because the fuel system in the s10 is known to have issues. It wasn’t nasty like this but the fuel came out clean but then I saw there was actually a lot of dirt in it . I always thought fuel systems would be super clean till I saw the dirt that came out. Now I want to clean my fuel tank. My fuel filter was only like $5 I went to o reilys and I do have a comercial account so you may pay more
What was the problm there.coz I realy don't knw if it is my fuel filter.car yerk.no start .start sometimes stalling ..don't know wht to do anymore fuel filter In tenk .Got stepway
There were a couple of cars before 1970, that had a reverse cleaning cycle for the fuel filter built in. But those were the days before the industry trained us all that we needed to BUY BUY BUY replacement parts. Just imagine: interchangable parts between brands and models: only one kind of spark plug, three tire sizes, headlights with their own reflectors that cost only a few dollars, and only two sizes of car battery.
I have a 2005 Dodge Durango with no check engine light on. While driving my car shuts off but it starts back up . what could be the problem?? And I just got a tune up yesterday..
PLEASE PLEASE wear eye protection AT LEAST when using that wire wheel , thanks ! FYI small bits of wire fissure and come off at 6000 rpm. You don't want that in your eye
I just had two gas fuel filters come apart!! The glue holding the cartridge media to the housing dissolved and it was loose inside , Any and all the collected dirt etc went right into engine along with the dissolved glue. In addition the loose media was intermittently blocking the outflow and over pressuring the fuel pump. Almost sure ethanol is the problem and any additives or increase is making things worse. Maybe a test of filters vs ethanol is in order?????
Good idea....You should be able to reuse the gas by letting it still a day or two and the dirt will settle in the bottom..you will not be able to use it all of course..but what you can use. filter it through a coffee filter..use in a mower or save for next filter cleaning.
Awesome video man. Man puts in the effort to help less fortunate people and and people who really don't have a clue hence why they watching take the piss thumbs down to all of you.
I am sorry but there is a special place for people who try to clean and re-use fuel filters or anything as such when you can just pop a new one in with little cost, i get it if you live far away from a shop it is hard to just go get these things at times so as a temporary fix sure, but if I knew someone who cleaned one out and put it back on and called it good id slap the back of their noggin.
Mine doesn't have a problem. It's just from 1996 and I'm restoring everything else so I figured it can't hurt. And $10 for a motorcraft on RockAuto was unbeatable.

Right on buddy ! My BMW filter is not in stock and I need our vehicle today. So THANK YOU
My Nissan takes a $20 filter.
I replaced with with the same size tubing, it's a clear filter for some Honda or lawn mower or something.
Filters just fine, and costs $4 no or so. Fuel pressure is better and no negatives.
Preventative maintenance never hurt nobody!
I mean, if you've already taken the time to remove it you might as well put a new one in
if u have one lol yeah,ok. car won't start and i'm stranded .
Thanks for the great advise & wealth of experience! I was doing food delivery for my grandma & ran out of gas. Now I'm having all the signs of a bad fuel filter. I have an 04 Kia Optima, so I have no idea what'll happen.
never let ur gas tank get low. u'll go thru a lot of fuel pumps that way. change the filter, he just showed u how.
since you ran it out theres a good chance its not your filter and that its the fuel pump giving you the issues. the pump needs the fuel for cooling and lubrication. I hope the very best for you.
Thank you. Now I know what's wrong with my car. BTW, love the way you talk American man, I'm from Down Under.
I never changed the fuel filter for the life of a car and never had any problem. As I was young I didn't even know it had a fuel filter.
Now I'm older I replace all service parts as required, and I still don't have any problems.
My grandpa used old washing machine motor for a bench grinder and it still works like new and its over 30 years old
Heat crush washers And dump in cold water to anneal . Crushing hardens copper
You could tell this guy works at a used car lot as a mechanic.
I thought _I_ was cheap..you are a Jedi Knight of cheap! 👍
That's not a good thing. Risk a $1500 fuel pump or injector replacement instead of replacing a $20 filter that's already removed? That's straight up stupidity.
@@mannys9130 Exactly! I Just replaced mine today
I was thinking Jedi master, personally.
Thanks bro. This is helpful since its hard to find fuel filter for my 1995 mitsubishi galant. 😅
Same problme stalling yerking .start no start could it be the fuel filter or pump
Once you have it off does it really matter .
Wow.....what a good guy!!!! I bet he could diagnose my car problem that todays so called mechanics cant!!!
My fuel filter was only like $5
I went to o reilys and I do have a comercial account so you may pay more
What was the problm there.coz I realy don't knw if it is my fuel filter.car yerk.no start .start sometimes stalling ..don't know wht to do anymore fuel filter In tenk .Got stepway
Heat the crush washers with a torch and let them cool it anneals them for a better seal
Thank you for this wonderful information!
what's the little tube that flushes the gunk out called to ask for? this is helpful
I like the way you think..."MC Guyver" ! That's Old School for you youngsters !
Devil Dog I still watch old school MacGyver feels just like yesterday I was waiting for that in Miami Vice every weekend MacGyver it

@@Jozavenue me neither
My 2007 jeep grand Cherokee turns on for about 5-7 seconds the turns off but it has no engine or transmission problems could it be the fuel filter?
You find out the problem? Fuel Pump and/or Fuel Pressure?
"And they are gooooooone..." Haha been there.
Very cool story about the wire wheel. Thanks for this tutorial.
just found your channel and watched a few videos. good stuff, thank you.
Thanks for your video...it was very helpful. I don't have the money to go get a new filter, so this might just get me by. 🙌🤞
Your wire wheel made from a washer machine is so cool!
👍👍
I have a 2005 Dodge Durango with no check engine light on. While driving my car shuts off but it starts back up . what could be the problem?? And I just got a tune up yesterday..
Great video! Fantastic tutorial on reusing the filter.
Clean the tank and make sure filler cap is on.Once clean buy a new filter ,job done .

Clean the tank and make sure filler cap is on.Once clean buy a new filter ,job done .
PLEASE PLEASE wear eye protection AT LEAST when using that wire wheel , thanks ! FYI small bits of wire fissure and come off at 6000 rpm. You don't want that in your eye
Great video! Your Grandfather sounds like he was a real gem. 👍
Any help here 03 caravan 3.3L
Sluggish and misfire. Also smell of gas under the van. Would a bad fuel filter do this?
I just had two gas fuel filters come apart!! The glue holding the cartridge media to the housing dissolved and it was loose inside , Any and all the collected dirt etc went right into engine along with the dissolved glue. In addition the loose media was intermittently blocking the outflow and over pressuring the fuel pump. Almost sure ethanol is the problem and any additives or increase is making things worse. Maybe a test of filters vs ethanol is in order?????
THIS GUY IS A MILLIONAIRE !!!! I KNOW IT !!!! LOL !!!!! IT PAYS TO BE CHEAP !!!! LOL !!!!!!
is a metal mesh 50 micron good to filter some fuel from my gas tank?
Didn't you dislodge the crud from the filter by shaking it?
What did you use to rise out the filter? Water or fuel?
awesome... but my mouth is starting to taste that gas just from watching you do that
Mine doesn't have a problem. It's just from 1996 and I'm restoring everything else so I figured it can't hurt. And $10 for a motorcraft on RockAuto was unbeatable.
