    Before doing this, you have to turn the engine over in the direction it runs untill the dots line up on #1 compression stroke! Most important step in the whole job.

      How do you turn it over by rotating the top gear?

      Abraham Frias You put the harmonic balancer bolt in the crank and turn it over with a long ratchet before removing the timing chain. If its badly stretched it will be a tad off, retarded cam timing.

      If those dots are lined up like that, #1 cylinder is not on the compression stroke

    Wish you would of showed the whole process of getting to the timing chain. I know its generally pretty basic stuff, but sometimes we can avoid certain headaches and eliminate guess work. There isn't any videos that I can find, so I guess I will have to create one. Looks like you took the head off..? I've only done a timing belt twice and thought I had to do the valves too but it was an interference engine so when the belt broke I actually didn't have too. I just wonder if yours wasn't making noise, then I may need to replace the timing chain tensioner too. ( the dark metal plate w 2 Philip screws behind the cam shaft pulley) Yours doesn't look quite like the one from mopars website from what I can tell, but your camera only glanced over it.

    Why do some people have to make this so difficult. If you are just replacing a worn gear set, and haven't MOVED anything while taking the old gears off, just line up the new ones the same way, and slide them on.

    Doing this on my 1993 Magnum 318 with 194,500 miles on it next week. Orange County SoCal Dodge Ram B250 in phenomenal shape (no plenum gasket leak so far) with no rust yet. Questions;
    1. The crank turns clockwise, right?
    2. Is putting my 3/4" socket on the crank bolt, & 1/2" 2' long breaker bar on the ground to the right side of the bolt and turning the engine over the easiest way to get a crank bolt off for the first time in probably 15 - 30 years?
