Timing cover seal
Coolant/antifreeze was leaking from where the upper part of timing cover meets the engine block and from the water pump weep hole
We also time the engine with new chain and install gears

Awesome video. I have the same problem on my 1995 dodge ram 1500 with 5.2 liter engine. I thought it was water pump but noticed when I removed the water pump I noticed water running from the upper left side of my block where timing chain cover is. Your video is so simple and very on point yet did in a timeless fashion, with all information that is needed to do the job. This was about the best video I have seen that was so on point and camera was very clear on every place you were working on. Thanks.. it really helped me

I like how you threaded the crank bolt out a little ways and used the puller with it. Much easier than looking for a socket to put in the crank hole, so you don't damage the threads. Great video!

For future reference you can remove the alt and ac compressor bracket off with the alt still attached as a shortcut.

@@FerKurl I'm doing it on my van just so it's that extra fun. I thought it was just the water pump leaking and there were 2 pinhole leaks in the radiator. I couldn't keep enough water in the system to pressure test and could never see where the leak originated. Replaced everything, belt, hoses, thermostat and housing. Put near a gallon of antifreeze in then heard a gurgle and watched the coolant run down the driveway. I must be getting old letting a MOPAR sneak up on me. What brand name is the blue gaskets you used?

I have replaced my timing cover gasket twice now the first time around it held for about a month with a rubber gasket and RTV because this is the first rubber gasket I'd ever seen on a car I threw RTV on it as a matter of habit and I think that may have caused the leak and the timing cover itself to get micro cracks in it and start to leak currently I am trying to redo the timing cover because when I ordered a new timing cover I got a crappy gasket and it didn't seal and I used RTV on it. So I'm going to try to get another rubber gasket and not use RTV on it and see if it seals this time. I never got to see whether your video actually worked out when it came to the timing cover I assume it did. So this time around I'm going to try your method plus it's been recommended that I replace the bolts because I've had to pull them so many times they may be stretched this is on a 5.2 98 Durango.

Good video but just a tip. If you remove that big bolt out of the center of the hermonic balancer, pull the washer's off and then put the bolt back on the monic balance or will slide over the bolt
Is this the same process on a 3.9 as well?

What was the torque spec for cam sprocket?
The pulley bolt is 31mm and it is a bear to get off. I am trying to use a big screwdriver against the cross member underneath, to keep the pulley from turning and a breaker bar on the 30 mm socket but the screwdriver keeps slipping.
Lock the flex plate or use air impact
Question followed all the same steps in the video but when installing the chain does the off colored mark need to be in a specific place

What is that second gasket that looks similar to the water pump gasket ? I didn't realize my kit came with that one until i found it sitting
not sure what youre tacoing about, can you specify? also some kits come with extra gaskets to fit a wide range of models
My 5.9L on my Durango runs rough, but then smooths out every 20 miles or so. I don’t know if it’s the timing chain though. 222k miles. Spark plugs look fine. I’m don’t really want to dig into the timing chain if I don’t have to. Any suggestions on diagnosing this?
Check compression, fuel pressure n spark first

Year later but - say yer chain "jumped a tooth" or they do not align whadoya do then? Rotate the cam clockwise around once, or rotate the crank around twice till they are lined up? Working with a Haynes manual here.
So let’s get some info here, the chain is still wrapped around the sprockets and is fairly tight?
@@FerKurl I have not opened the engine yet but I'm preparing to. I believe that it has all the characteristics of a jump chain. It has over 200k on this timing chain. I do not believe it is broken.
Most likely the chain just has a ton of slack.
So you will spin the crank sprocket til it’s straight up, if the cam mark is on the upper half give the crank another rotation clockwise and point straight up. That should get the cam close. Remove chain and sprockets.
It's called a water pump inlet tube & suspected that my dodge ram van has the same problem ( timing cover water leak).

Can you just note where the timing Marks are and not have to bump the motor to where they line up and just put the new set where the old one was??? Or is it best to bump the motor to where they line up
You can turn the motor over by hand to line em up, it’s not a big deal. Good luck!
If the timing chain gears have key ways, and you cannot put them on wrong, do you still have to line up the dots on the gears straight up and down? Or can you just put on the gears in the position they came off in?

How much a job like this, I think I'm need this done to mines ive been smelling cooling & I got under there to look for a link & seen wet spots on both sides up top of the trimming cover
It’s common leak spot for em. Depends on how much your local mechanic charges. I can give you labor time when I’m in front of my work computer if you want

Did you have some slack in the chain? I’m doing one right now and the driver side part of the chain has some slack and passenger side is pretty tight.
Yea this had plenty of slack. Chains will stretch over time. Always replace

This also appears to be a fairly common issue on these engines.
unfornatly this is way beyond my mecanical skill set, & i don't think i have all the correct tools to perform this task myself.

do you have to worry about getting coolant in your oil pan?
ChrisCG try not let the coolant run in the pan. Drain the coolant well. I always do a good oil change afterwards
@@FerKurl damn I just did my oil pan and rear main, biggest pain in the ass I should've done this at the same time. Guess I'll wait for my next oil change to do this, hopefully it doesn't get too much worse
ChrisCG always recommended to do the oil pan gasket when doing the timing cover but if you’re careful with the oil pan gasket you should be fine.

Man just doing one today and boy did someone do the timing all wrong camshaft pointing at 12 o clock and crank at the right position at tdc poor customer
I found the same situation on my 74 360, do you rotate the cam to six o clock? Or just put the new one on at six o clock?
@@angiebennetto957 It's a little late but cam mark should be at 6 o'clock, crank mark at 12 o'clock.
You are aware that the entire bracket for the a/c pump, alt and idler pully comes off as an assembly with 6 bolts, i hope.....
Andrew Knight yes I’m aware. Most people don’t have the ac tools I have and disconnecting the ac lines would involve a recharge. So do it this way and it’s just easier for your average do it yourselfers. It only takes literally a few extra mins. Like literally bud. Super easy either way. 👍👍👍

the 1st year 2002 the 1500 was new body 3rd gen and the 2500 and 3500 was still 2nd gen
