  • Huntin season is comin quick! Gotta keep my truck running. I put in a new 5.9L and played hell trying to get it tuned right. This vid will hopefully help get your truck up and running faster than I got mine up.

I realized i couldn't use a old school timing light on my 99 dodge. So I just moved the distributor around untill it did the best burnout. Fucking MINT.

I get to it Monday and check for fuel and spark. No spark but I didn't have any codes on the dash. Cycled the key 3x to get a p done on the dash after the odometer reading.
I have verified Cam and crank sensors work.
I am using the snap on ethos edge scan tool and I can ready all the activity. I have checked for spark from ignition coil to the spark plug itself and it checks out. Used the scan tool to activate the injectors. Verified Crank and cam signals.
Based off this video, he is checking it will the vehicle is running which is why I gave my comment. Can this be checked if the vehicle is not running? Or does it have to at least crank?

I bought my vehicle from a friend who couldn't get it smog. Good price!
My vehicle was parked for a long time. Having been parked for a long time with a dead battery caused the computer to lose it's memory. The battery was dead for quite some time. Did everything I could think of to get it running again. New everything. The video referees to "fuel injector timing" or "initial timing" using the V8 stamp to set to #1 spark plug than the computer will adjust it from there. This worked for me it started right up.
Before finding this video it was hard to start, once in a while it started but seemed like only some cylinders were firing & some not. It was horrible.

Hello UtahHunter from Okie MoPar nut. That is not called a fuel sync it is called a camshaft position sensor & it's only purpose is to tell the ECU what cycle the engine is on (exhaust or intake) so that the computer can properly time the fuel injection cycle which, once the engine is running , is timed off of the spark trigger (pickup coil) on the bellhousing. Dodge magnum engines use a tone ring on the flex plate for auto trans & notches on a flywheel on stick shift units. Instructions straight out of a 1996 Dodge ram 3500 van, 5.9 engine. 1)Rotate engine until #1 piston is coming up on compression stroke. Align tdc mark on the harmonic balancer with the timing mark on the timing tab. 2)If the oil pump drive has not been removed install the distributor & align the rotor tip with the notch on the CPS labeled CYL NO.1. 3) install & tighten hold down clamp 3) Install the dist cap & make sure the wire sequence is correct for the firing order 4) Start & drive. Setting the fuel sync? Is that a GM term? According to an article in MoPar Action magazine on this subject the tech editor says that you can unhook the cam position sensor once the engine is running & it will continue to run just fine until you shut the engine off. It is only necessary (the CPS) for startup. I'll try that tomorrow to see if that is true. I have rebuilt a 3.9 V-6, a 5.2, & a 5.9 (the van engine) & followed this procedure & all performed as advertised. Fuel sync?? No such thing on the Dodge magnum engines.

Update: Ran a test. Started engine (already warmed up) & unplugged the cam position sensor. Engine will run just fine. Shut engine off & tried to re-start, no go. I can only surmise that the purpose of the CPS is to tell the computer what cycle the #1 cylinder is on.

@@larryhutchens7593 i was wondering about this too, I just rebuilt my 98 5.2L and I set the #1 CYL at TDC and dropped the distributor in and everything lines up.. I have the Haynes manual to this truck and this is what it States.. but nothing about "fuel synchronization". I believe you are correct on this subject because I have searched aawell.. I'm a mechanic and it just did not make sense to me the "fuel synchronization". Like you said the fuel injection is preset.. the computer relies on the CPS to determine what stroke the engine is on.. when everything is set the computer will adjust the timming on its own.. my chain was extremely strethceh and skipped a tooth and somehow the engine was still running decent.. sluggish.. but decent... It auto adjusts to always be on #1 TDC

I tend to overlook things and hang on every word when getting instructions. Just to clarify things you don't line up TDC on timing chain cover with the letters V8, use the recessed timing mark on the balancer. I know that sound stupid but I researched this for a half a day just to make sure. I'm a mechanic, but im saying to myself, "he said to line up where it said V8 to the TDC mark", lol! I got it and thanks for the video

Both you guys are not following what the master mechanic said. It worked for me. I've tried endlessly what traditional proto call would dictate. You should listen to what a real master mechanic can share. "Inital timming" for timing to fuel injectors. (V8 mark) everything works togather now.
