    The normal type is seriously underrated. It has a lot of common moves under its belt, only one weakness, and can completely shut down some of the franchise's ghost trainers. AND so many normal types get great coverage moves. Terrastallizing into normal completely saved my recent Fidough challenge in Scarlet version, since it erased his weakness to poison. Just because it isn't super effective against anything doesn't mean it's bad.

    I think this is an interesting way to illustrate how much longer Emerald is than Yellow.
    Victreebel, currently the fastest Mon in Yellow beat the game in about 36 minutes IIRC.
    At that time, Exploud, who is on pace to be the fastest Mon in Emerald, had barely defeated the third gym leader, Wattson, and was on its way to beat up Maxie for the first time.

    As is tradition, Emerald guy is here.
    Today, I am going to work backwards through your video.
    Firstly, I have great respect for your choice to release your overlay for free. You could very well have made bank on this software, and I don't think anyone would have begrudged your right to profit off of your work. Despite that, you prioritized doing something because it benefits the community, and I have immense respect for that. On behalf of everyone who picks it up - thank you.
    As for the playthroufh itself, the ending was quite disappointing, but based on your commentary, I'm guessing you feel the same way, so I see little reason to discuss it further. You recognized and acknowledged where you went wrong, that's all good.
    You saw the value and made good use of Brick Break against Steven. That's a huge win, regardless of everything that happened there. Try to focus on that piece of learning as a positive to bring out of that video ending.
    You made excellent use of the Game Corner today. You have really gotten into the habit of doing this now. Great job working this into your standard routine.
    You may not have clicked it, but you made great use of Swagger too. It didn't work out the way you planned, because everything went so smoothly there, but you thought about preparing for Magneton. That was a good use of your problem solving skills, and that's what counts here.
    You also acknowledged the point about getting better at setting up on heal turns, so though you mostly forgot this time, you know about it it, and being aware of it is, itself improvement.
    I want to close by saying that this run is actually much more clean than the 10 resets would imply on paper. I'd even go as far as saying this is one of your best to date. Read this comment again. I wasn't pointing out areas in which you can improve, but rather one's in which you have improved.
    Great job, I've developed a soft spot for Hariyama after using it in my gen7 competitive teams, so I'm looking forward to your video.

You make sure to credit the other people who contribute to your videos. And not only do you go through the extra effort to provide your overlay to anyone who wants it, you insist on doing so FOR FREE even though you could have made a tidy profit because of how dang good it is. Hi Scott! Nice work with Exploud even with some iteration of strategy at the end. Always nice to see good design go hand-in-hand with consistent performance. In previous video you discussed utilization of Abra for Teleport during Emerald playthroughs. If you ever (or rather when you) proceed to optimized playthroughs in Emerald, you should change Abra’s catch rate to 100%. The encounter comes up at the very beginning of a playthrough. so in optimal play one would simply start over if Abra would run away. This is just to save some real time. Thanks for the content!

    • @skeetermania3202
      @skeetermania3202 10 місяців тому

      Wouldn’t that seem a bit cheap? If anything, having to grind a long time on Route 116 could open the floodgates for an Abra encounter, thus giving more of an advantage to Pokémon that can’t get past Roxanne quickly.

    • @teemutuovinen1904
      @teemutuovinen1904 10 місяців тому

      @@skeetermania3202 Not the encounter rate but catch rate, so that if Abra is seen it would be caught for Teleport. Since Teleport is quite significant time save, in optimized playthrough you honestly would not proceed without one. Just like you would restart the run if you had too many encounters in Mount Moon in Gen1, especially since restarting before Roxxane would be only about 10 minutes’ worth of playtime with 4x speed (so this change would just save time for Scott to produce videos). Of course the encounter rate is then a random factor, since exp and ev gains would be messed up of Abra would be boosted, but I believe this would be something to consider.

    • @ScottsThoughtsPokemon
      @ScottsThoughtsPokemon 10 місяців тому

      I still have to think about Abra. Right now my thoughts are: it feels like too much manipulation to force it for all playthroughs. Feels like grinding for Roxanne should come with this benefit.

    Don't be so hard on yourself over the Steven Stone fight, a middling normal type pokemon is never going to be instinctive to use in such a fight, and the wide variety of coverage moves probably makes it more difficult to use there when you only have 4 move slots.
    I'm confident you'll be able to optimise Exploud and get a reset-free playthrough with a little luck in the future, especially when you're not having to make those calls on the fly and with the time pressure of being on the clock.

    Actually one of the most impressive playthroughs I've seen to date. It says something when a Pokemon dominates Yellow or Crystal, that's not free obviously, but it really sends a message when a Pokemon just dominates Emerald. Exploud has basically one difficult fight at the very end with Steven, and I'd even go as far to say that fight is less difficult for Exploud than a ton of other Pokemon. Just an absolutely dominant performance throughout.

    23:30, Brick Break would actually be pointless here. If Return has STAB, like it does for Exploud, it has 153 BP (102 * 1.5), Brick Break would be 150 (75 * 2) due to no STAB, so it'd actually be weaker, surprisingly!

    Congrats to Exploud on having a great playthrough. It's going to be blazing through the game once you do the replay. The Tate and Liza fight is making me wonder how well Lunatone and Solrock will do on their playthroughs. Lunatone gets STAB on its Psychic moves, but doesn't get much else besides Ice Beam, Solrock has a decent attack stat but is stuck with low accuracy Rock type moves until Return and Earthquake, and their defensive typing is kinda cruddy for both of them. Maybe low D, high E tier?

    • @DisplayName317
      @DisplayName317 10 місяців тому

      @Dick_Faggotson I don't see Levitate being that big of a factor aside from Steven tbh and most of his mons that have Earthquake also have a different move that's supereffective against them. I could see them getting through most of the story campaign fine, but Juan, the E4, Champion, and Steven are all bad matchups for them. Lunatone will probably steamroll the early campaign with STAB Psychic type moves & Base 95 SpAtk, Solrock seems like more of a struggle throughout.

    I'm not surprised Exploud did pretty well. Its stats aren't very well distributed for competitive play, where pokemon want to be either extremely fast or extremely bulky, and generally like specializing in one attacking stat. However, for solo challenges, Exploud is still fast enough to outspeed everything when it has a level advantage and stat experience, and its special movepool/mixed attacking stats really help it get by walls that normal moves would struggle with. It also gets setup, has a medium slow growth rate, and gets STAB return, all of which are amazing traits for a solo run. Its bulk also isn't amazing, but its generally good enough to take a couple of neutral moves, which is really all it has to fear since strong fighting types are pretty rare in gen 3.
    Essentially, Exploud may not look like a monster, but it has just enough in every stat to take advantage of its amazing movepool, so it kinda just doesn't struggle with anything the game has to offer. Its just fast enough, just strong enough, and just bulky enough to kinda beat everything.

      Exploud was actually kind of decent in competitive play. It was really good for a bit when it got Boomburst then defined some of the lower tiers. It had a niche in OU a few gens, although its speed and lack of bulk has made it kind of mediocre at best now

      While that's true, I feel like scrappy boomburst was the biggest reason Exploud found any sort of competitive success, which it doesn't have in gen 3. A base 150 power STAB normal type move with no drawbacks that can hit ghosts is insane, but its safe to say the move/ability carried Exploud in competitive, not its stats.
      I think its still fair to say that Exploud's stats and gen 3 movepool are much better suited for a solo run than they are for competitive.

    I think I actually like that Sound-based moves are a mechanic separate from typing, with abilities and special moves granting immunities, resistances, type-shifts, and pseudo-STAB to sound-based moves.

    Challenge: do an Exploud run using only sound based moves. I know it might be a bit limiting on the attacks, but I’d totally watch that.

    Hariyama is so good. It's so bulky. It has seemingly middling defenses, but a colossal HP stat of 144 and 120 attack. It gets access to bulk up, earthquake, rock tomb, and vital throw. It's fluctuating growth rate. It's going to be such a monster.

    Just commenting on the newest video (not gonna watch it since i’m binging all of your videos) BUT i am thinking of doing these kind of runs for my stream and just kinda wanna know how you work your timer like do you reset the timer as well and if you do how do you know what time to go back to? Thank you so much for these videos they’ve inspired me to do pokemon challenges (something i usually have 0 faith in myself to do.) Hope you have a fantastic day 💪 Also my progress so far is Rattata’s run in yellow version. ^^

      I have a lot of custom tech to manage everything now. My autosplitter backs up every save file I make. It renames the file with the time code I took the save at. So if I need to stop for the day and come back later I have a millisecond accurate save that I can use to set the timer to the correct value.
      The reset counter is a livesplit plugin that can be found in the main website. I will be moving away from it next year and just tracking real-time and resets with my own custom code.

      @@ScottsThoughtsPokemonThat's so freaking cool!! well I want to thank you for inspiring me to do this. I've done a Bulbasaur run. And until I can figure out my own way of doing things I am going by level. (Venusaur level 92...won with struggle) yeah i got a long way to go before I can actually "strategize" but honestly I'm binging your videos and it just has me excited to learn how to do this efficiently like you have.
      Thank you for being an inspiration and an awesome person. And thank you for the response! Hope you have a fantastic day!

    I think the actual play would have been to keep shadowball over icebeam and then stay physical but having shadowball brickbreak rest howl for steven should make the fight a loot easier. Earthquake only gives extra coverage for metagross and shadowball instead would give coverage for claydol aswell, and also give 5 more power against skarmory. you do lose the effectiveness against armaldo though. but I think with plus 6 that should be no issue.
    But that's talking about the tiniest details, loved the video and loved exploud ever since I was 12 years old :)
    Ps. I also used to bully the camerateam xD

    You spoke about testing growth rates fully Scott. Would it be possible to, by modding, alter a pokemon's growth rate? So you could pick something that performed well in the tier lists (Kangaskhan or Victreebel or something IDK) and then do a series of comparative runs with each growth rate on the one mon just to see how much it changes the time.

    Using return to sweep Winona (except skarmory assuming no howl) is better than using shock wave if I did the damage calcs right. This is due to not needing to display the super effective message. The kingdra would not have survived at +1.

    Fun Fact: In gen 3, there is a fully programmed but unused ability called Cacophany. It has the exact same effect as Soundproof, and given Exploud's design and the fact that one of its cards in Japanese has a move of the same name, it is likely that the ability was intended for the Exploud line. But for whatever reason, it was given Soundproof instead, and Cacophany never returned in the data of any later generations, despite there being several other examples of multiple abilities having identical effects, like Insomnia and Vital Spirit, for example.

    You’ll have to mod a couple runs using the same Pokémon, only altering the growth rate to see which growth rate is best and at what points in the game you see differences! I’d be very interested!

    Exploud is a solid Pokemon in its own right, and what helps is that its a Normal-type that can take advantage of its special movepool due to its attacking stats being equal. Though the problem is that the Whismur and Loudred stages can be quite painful to go through.
    The other pure Normal-type lines in Hoenn could provide interesting results. Linoone for example, is really good at the Elite Four due to Belly Drum and a decent enough movepool. Kecleon's ability changes the way you play it in comparison to other Pokemon, and also Slaking, though Truant is a hinderance (add a Slow growth rate on top of that too and well.....). The other one-offs like Spinda and Zangoose can be interesting as well. To my knowledge, in this gen Zangoose gets Swords Dance super early which really helps it. Though you'll save that for a VS video with Seviper given they are counterparts most likely.
