Is it weird to say that Exploud was one of the last “monstrous” designed Pokémon? Gen 3 was the last time we saw Pokémon like Exploud and from the 4th Gen onward, we saw increasingly more animalistic looking Pokémon. I dunno where I’m going with this, but while I’ve never used Exploud on any playthrough, I can definitely say I enjoy his funky design :)
I’ve had a soft spot for Exploud ever since it helped me reach my first Pokémon League championship back when I played Ruby as a kid. Good to see it’s had success in competitive as well, even if it’s almost exclusively in lower tiers.
I would keep your eyes on Exploud for the next wee while, since Bronzong has now left NU (in yesterday's tier shifts) and there are few things left that can check it so reliably, as they have no way of sponging its coverage moves like Bronzong can. Same goes for other special attacks that use Fire coverage like Sylveon and Indeedee-F. I doubt this change would make it broken enough to get banned again but it will certainly be even more dangerous in NU, right now.
@@emiandnues Both almost always invest in physical Defense to match up better against threats like Decidueye, Golurk, Passimian and Knock Off spammers like Drapion and Sirfetch'd (and Vaporeon will need that even more now with Tsareena in the tier). And Sylveon mostly goes Choice Specs because of how strong and spammable Pixilate Hyper Voice is.
I was making some lowlevel analysis on all the Typings and how prominent they where over the Generations. Normal started out extremely potent up until Gen 3, then it sunk in usage hard, turning into one of the worse Types ever. Only Blissey made it into the current OU. Even Rock, Ice, Bug, Dark, and Ghost perform better.
To be honest ghost feels like a type that would perform well. Ice is good offensive typing. Bug while not good on its own is great as a secondary type. Would like to see a video on the topic tho
Bug while hitting three types super effectively, is pretty bad offensively. Alongside Grass, it is the most resisted type, resisted by 39% of the types in the game. Grass is even more useful due to being one of the two types that hits Water super effectively. Bug is only good as STAB, U-Turn and coverage for Psychic types (since it hits 2/3 types that resist Psychic, and most learned Signal Beam). I agree with the other types that perform better.
The lack of resistances hurts a lot, especially now with plenty of powerful moves and fighting coverage being everywhere. And unlike rock and Ice, It brings nothing offensively. The only Reason blissey and chansey are good Is because they are min maxed special walls
@@IgnitedQuils Yeah, I was thinking about it, because of a Video of how to buff the Bugtype and realiced something. The Number and Selection of Types weak to it is fine. Psychic is extremely prominent, but it is resisted so much, most of the Pokemon it could hurt are covered by Dualtyping. Poison and Fairy sould just loose the Bugresistance. Bug is interestingly a very strong Type in Combination whit other Types. Bug/Steel is better then Mono Steel.
@@Sunaki1000 Nah don't lose the resist on Poison. Poison is already a fairly weak type as is. But yeah, there was no reason to give fairy a bug resist.
I'm a big fan of sound based abilities in fictional fights, and I love the attention Pokemon gives to that with how many moves and Pokemon specialize in that. One Pokemon who does this that I would love to see covered on this series is Kommo-o. Sun and Moon's Psuedo Legendary. I love this thing's concept. An armored warrior dragon that hits its own scales to make sound waves, and those waves that can both attack enemies and buff its own stats. I remember Kommo-o being really weak with very few options when it first appeared, but Gamefreak kept buffing it with new moves in every game. I'd be very interested in seeing its competitive journey, even if it's only from the previous Gen. I've heard nowadays it's better in SIngles than it is in Doubles, but I haven't delved deep enough to know for sure, or for what reasons. Maybe SIngles just values its bulk, dangerous setup-options, and Stealth Rock access more than Doubles values its stab spread attacks.
Big fan of Kommo-o, it's my favorite pseudo. I don't know much about gen 8 competitive, but I'm glad Game Freak has buffed it. It was very clearly the worst pseudo legendary back then lol.
while I agree the kommo-o would be an interesting pokemon, given that its only been around for 2 generations, if feels like a waste to make an episode on it now, since most of its competitive history is more of recent history than not, in addition, they've said explicitly in various places that gen 6+ mons are currently off the table since there's not a lot to cover and it'd be weird to do mons from gen 6 or later when they haven't even done all the fully evolved gen 1 mons
Yeah, Kommo-o is one of my favorite pokemon because it has so many fun sets. Substitute + Belly Drum with Soundproof is amazing for countering roar and other sound moves that would usually counter substitute, just like Exploud did in Gen 2. You can also use a Clanging Scales + Throat spray set to get a +1 boost to all your stats except special attack which gets +2. You can also use the signature Z move and get an omniboost while doing big damage. You can also use a bulky set with stealth rock and take advantage of Kommo-os solid defenses. There's just so many things Kommo-o can do, and it's good at all of them.
Boomburst is just a really great move in general. Making almost any Pokemon who learns it so much better. Exploud, Swellow and Toxtricity are the obvious ones, but even something like Chatot got so much power from just how good this move is. How good is Chatot actually soon I hope?
This mon is kind of like Choice Band Aggron, it's scary no matter what tier it's in. There was a brief time in Gen 8 OU where people were trying out Specs Exploud as it had the new and improved Overheat that roasted Corvi and Ferro and Hydro Pump's extra power also was good vs Heatran. Boomburst still killed everything else.
a big reason was also because it was a Normal type and thus could switch into Spectrier freely and then obliterate it with Scrappy Boomburst - being able to retain momentum against Spectrier was huge
Considering Normal’s near neutral coverage with Scrappy, even Skarmory who resists Boomburst still takes a lot of damage from it. This frees up more slots for coverage, in this case of Exploud for using moves like Focus Blast.
Maybe next week? Latias was the second Pokémon covered last year, so maybe that’ll happen. Plus, it’d be the perfect excuse to have Joey commentate again.
Never used it once, but I've just evolved a whismer in my emerald nuzlocke I've been doing recently (not a plug to look at my channel, i don't even post videos) Soo who knows? Might survive, might not... Who knows really?
@@mr.krustykrust it’s great in RSE as well. It’s move pool is quite good even for the time. Return, Shadow Ball, Ice Beam and Fire Blast cover a huge portion of the late game regardless of which version you’re playing.
that it is, and thats mostly owed to the versatility of normal types who generally have wide move pools, especially useful on a special attacking normal
When I was a kid I always loved exploud because I had this thing where whenever I got a new Pokémon I’d never seen before, I would try every TM to see if they could learn it or not. I was so surprised when exploud could learn sooooooo many different moves it completely blew my mind. So I always just considered him as one of the better Pokémon arbitrarily lmao

Fun fact, in gen 3 there was an unused ability called Cacophony that was believed to be associated with Exploud and its evolutionary line, it was functionally identical to Soundproof. It isn't really known why the ability was left unused since there were other identical abilities such as pure power and huge power, cloud nine and airlock (and others introduced later such as moldbreaker, turboblaze, and terravolt; also protean and libero). It was removed from gen 4 onwards.
@@youtubewatcher6124 It implies a completely different reason why they block sound moves. Soundproof implies it lacks ears or is otherwise deaf (mr mime and voltorb for instance). Cacophony on the other hand implies that the poke is so loud that it drowns out other sound moves. It fits the exploud line so well.
Exploud has a colorful move-pool; Fire coverage, Ice coverage, Water coverage, yet all it needed was a super strong STAB move (and a Ghost busting ability) to bring it to prominence. It doesn't even hit anything super effectively yet still takes out just about anything that doesn't resist it. If it just had a 10+ buff to its Sp. Attack it would've been a real monster.
I loved my Exploud. I used it in Ultra Sun's Battle Tree, and it got me all the way to 74 wins as Choice Scarf Scrappy Boomburst along with a Kommo-o Clangorous Soulblaze teammate. I stopped playing after that because I couldn't go through that gauntlet again - but I'll never forget it as my most powerful strong-all-round everything-breaker.
This is the kind of buff I think is fun and wish there was more of. They didn’t just give it some stats or some random weird ability or move that doesn’t belong to it. They made a new move with limited distribution that specifically compliments this Pokémon’s character traits and makes it unique.
Design wise, I absolutely love Exploud’s design! A bulky brute with a massive mouth, so it can SCREAM it’s opponent to death! And it’s name, almost the perfect PUN!!! Battle wise, well, LOOK AT ITS STATS!! Yes, it’s a “Jack of all trades” when it’s on its attacks, but they mean nothing if the Pokémon can’t back it up. It ether needs a stats boost, or a new Region Form that upgrades it.
I think if Exploud got something hilarious as a unique move or ability like Meloetta…maybe something that protects its teammates from its spreadmoves or boosts sound based attacks that would’ve been awesome! But hey, I can live with scrappy and Boomburst
according to one of its pokedex entries, Relicanth doesn't evolve because it's already a perfect life-form. Shall we test this fishy tale and see how good Relicanth actually is?
Boomburst is certainly a perfect attack for Exploud since it fits perfectly for the loud noise Pokémon. Plus how Exploud has a wide move pool can lead to a unique set of moves can allow players to make Exploud a threatening Pokémon on their team.
Y'know, you never pay much attention to it considering how overlooked it is, but Exploud is kinda terrifying. Bloodshot eyes, resonating tubes that blast intense jets of pressure jutting out from every corner of its body, and a deep mouth that it can open basically as wide as its body. It's like a deafening hellspawn gremlin the more you look at it!
Thanks for doing an episode on a Pokémon I made a Mega Evolution for once. My idea for Mega Exploud was to see what would happen if it blew out its voice or got laryngitis; as such, it became a Ghost type with an ability called "Mute Button" that would render it (as well as partners in Double/Triple Battles) unable to use sound-based moves. Its base Special Attack would increase to 131, its Speed to 98, its Special Defense to 93, and its HP to 114. Seems like Mega Exploud would clash severely with the strategies seen in this video, though. D:
Man, gen 3 had some of the best early game Pokemon. Taillow, Aron, Ralts, Whismur, Lotad, Seedot, Makuhita, Shroomish, Meditite, and while not exactly early game, Electrike.
I don't agree Gen. 3 has the best early route mon. But some like Taillow, Ralts, Whismer, Shroomish & Lotad are pretty good. Shroomish & Lotad are probably the best ones. Taillow would have trouble against Roxanne. Whismer would get it's but whoop by Brawler & Ralts is kinda annoying to find as it's encounter rate is about 5% to find. Electrike is an little bit late as an early route. So it doesn't count. I usually get there first or fully evolved ones later down the road.
Imagine Adaptability Porygon-Z having Boomburst. Good luck dealing with that without Ghosts. 252+ SpA Choice Specs Adaptability Porygon-Z Boomburst vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Toxapex: 290-342 (95.3 - 112.5%) -- 75% chance to OHKO 252+ SpA Choice Specs Adaptability Porygon-Z Boomburst vs. 252 HP / 164 SpD Landorus-Therian: 514-606 (134.5 - 158.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Exploud is very underrated in my opinion. Base 490 isn’t bad, and by nature of being a Normal type gives it a very wide movepool. And when Boomburst got added, it had another sound based Normal move much stronger than Hyper Voice. But yeah, various other normal types surpass it: Tauros, Blissey, Snorlax, Miltank, Ursaring, and of course Slaking (if you don’t take Truant into consideration). It’s a shame. It’s very cool and deserves some more recognition.
@@roninwarriorsfan it doesn't have much of either the glass or the canon. Like you can be a bulky attacker and be amazing, there's plenty of examples on this channel of that. You can also be a glass Canon like infernape. But Exploude has the same problem that Blaziken had pre-Speed boost. It can get it done, but it needs more
Exploud's stats have always confused me. I always figured with it's design and nature it would have more HP than it has and I figured its attacking stats (or at least Sp.A) would be 100+.
I think it’s due to stat balancing. GF tends to make a lot of regular fully evolved Pokemon be between a BST of 440-535, Exploud in this case having a 490 BST
I love Exploud, it’s so underrated and it deserves the buffs it got. Hopefully it’s speed gets patched up to at least 80 at most in the next generation, it’s voice needs to be heard by more competitive users. :D
Whimsur was the first pokemon I bred to have perfect 31's across the board, specifically to have a maxxed out Exploud with Boomburst for the doubles battles in the post game of gen 6 with a shuckle partner. good times.
a shame they didn't mention that exploud was somewhat viable in gen 8 ou for a period, all because it could use spectrier as a way of switching in. i believe it was even ranked (very low) on the vr
I did not know that Bridger had a solid performance with Exploud once. Then again, he’s always used pretty interesting teams so I can’t say I’m surprised
While I understand that not every pokemon can be viable in competitive, I love it when an unusual pokemon can find itself a niche based on it's unique attributes. Exploud finding an OU niche because of Soundproof of all things, is an excellent example of that; loved to see it.
Sometimes, a niche is all a pokemon needs to make it in OU. It depends on its how good the niche is itself when compared to the current metagame at the time.
Competitive Career: Exploud started off as a small threat that used Salac Berry + Belly Drum Pass. Though, it was all he had in the beginning. But Gen 4 came and he could never come back to it. When Gen 6 came and Boomburst was gifted to him, high and low tiers learnt to fear the words of *”EXPLOUD!!!!”*
First shiny Pokémon I ever got in omega Ruby right after the first gym, and used him throughout the playthrough, I’ll never forget the fun those games gave me
Wonderful way to start off the year. The Whismur Evolution Line will absolutely always be my #1 Favorite Pokémon of all time. Everything I see in me, I see in them. To a point, I AM them (yes, I have a booming voice, but I also see a lot more in them that most people don't). Every FSG video I kept hoping would finally be this one, and as soon as I looked and saw this video in my Subscription Feed, I just smiled my absolute brightest, stared at the thumbnail in joy for about 10 minutes, pulled out my Exploud Figure to sit on my lap as I watched this, and then I proceeded to sit through this entire thing. And now I'm even more happy to see that Exploud didn't totally stink and had a lot of good moments, especially in Later Generations.
Slowly got slightly better each generation. First got the physical/special split in gen 4, Scrappy in gen 5, Boomburst in gen 6, Z moves in gen 7, and Boots in gen 8
Exploud is the rare normal-type that actually has a pretty respectable special attack stat for its wide pool of special moves. Wish we had more pokémon like it.

Depends on what you determine as monstrous. There’s eternus
The trashbags and ice cream pokemon are monsters, for different reasons xD
@@kasPWI Same with the pile of sludge and a seeds with eyes.

Just thinking about this:
I need my kaijus to get love.
Wasted the opportunity with dynamax mot taking advantage of giant monsters
I’ve had a soft spot for Exploud ever since it helped me reach my first Pokémon League championship back when I played Ruby as a kid. Good to see it’s had success in competitive as well, even if it’s almost exclusively in lower tiers.
FINALLY a good Pokémon video that isn’t a special event. Maybe we can go back to these length in videos
How good was the toaster actually?
Depends on the competitive community of the past
not really a good pokemon. like he's not untiered but he's still an nu level mon. not that that's not ok just, not a good mon
15:29 lmfao, just noticed his exploud set had a QUIET nature. nice
Surprised they didn't give Exploud a Galar variant, to tie in with Linoone's "punk" galar variant
I saw someone else suggest a version that looks like a set of bagpipes. Such a missed opportunity.
Kiss isn't punk
That would have been so dope
@@yorecf9641 Makes sense. Bagpipes are a common Scottish instrument (with Galar being based on the UK and all) and are very loud.
@@beta511ee4 would’ve been a perfect team member for Gloria.
Don't SpDef Sylveon and Vaporeon check it though? They're already widely used
Nope. Vaporeon is 2HKOed with stealth rock up and Sylveon is near guaranteed with an 80ish percent chance to be 2HKOed with rocks up.
@@DARam4009 Sooooo... Exploud just literally screams louder than Sylveon? XD

I love Exploud, it's so fun for a casual playthrough
Plus in ORAS Whismur gets Uproar early on which in Gen 6 got buffed to the same base power as Hyper Voice
It doesn’t have any vgc coverage so it’s unlikely that it would get picked as it had been banned.
Imagine if Porygon-Z had it. We'd all be doomed
I love exploud's design it's so unique and the concept is amazing
Only difference is that Aggron kinda sucks. While Exploud isn't.
How GOOD was Latios ACTUALLY? Latias already had an analysis almost a year ago, want to see how her offensive counterpart is analyzed on this channel.

Latias was the second Pokémon covered last year, so maybe that’ll happen. Plus, it’d be the perfect excuse to have Joey commentate again.

I always make sure to use an exploud whenever I play gen 3, it's surprisingly one of my favorite staples

I’ve only used it in ORAS but yeah I can second this. It’s great in main game

@@mr.krustykrust it’s great in RSE as well. It’s move pool is quite good even for the time. Return, Shadow Ball, Ice Beam and Fire Blast cover a huge portion of the late game regardless of which version you’re playing.

My man!
Boomburst animation in SS is so cool
It was quite Exploudsive.
It's moveset is Insane.
that it is, and thats mostly owed to the versatility of normal types who generally have wide move pools, especially useful on a special attacking normal
Hey I do that too!
@@lockdownhamza lmao nice. I would also try every evolution stone that I had to see if they would evolve from that too. I remember that’s how I found out that murkrow evolved into Honchcrow in diamond
Not only did Gen 8 do Exploud a service in battling, it also helped boost it odds of creating a band by adding Toxtricity, Rillaboom, and Obstagoon
and dont forget miractus to add to the band
Fun fact, in gen 3 there was an unused ability called Cacophony that was believed to be associated with Exploud and its evolutionary line, it was functionally identical to Soundproof.
It isn't really known why the ability was left unused since there were other identical abilities such as pure power and huge power, cloud nine and airlock (and others introduced later such as moldbreaker, turboblaze, and terravolt; also protean and libero).
It was removed from gen 4 onwards.
Cacophony sounds dumb, Soundproof is way better
@@youtubewatcher6124 It implies a completely different reason why they block sound moves.
Soundproof implies it lacks ears or is otherwise deaf (mr mime and voltorb for instance).
Cacophony on the other hand implies that the poke is so loud that it drowns out other sound moves. It fits the exploud line so well.
@@Toast_94 thanks for explaining
@@youtubewatcher6124 No problem
cacophany should be a punk rock clone for exploud tbh
That’s pretty impressive
This pokemon deserved a mega more than half of the hoenn creatures who actually got one

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE
Always exciting to see a video pop up that's way longer than you'd expect from that pokemon
This is the kind of buff I think is fun and wish there was more of. They didn’t just give it some stats or some random weird ability or move that doesn’t belong to it. They made a new move with limited distribution that specifically compliments this Pokémon’s character traits and makes it unique.
6:52 I like it how there's Hitmonchan's Drain Punch in the background while you're talking about “offensive punch”. Nice detail!
Delcatty, Swalot, Torkoal, Grumpig, Spinda, Zangoose, Seviper, Lunatone, Solrock, Kecleon, Tropius, Huntail, Gorebyss, Relicanth, and Latios
15 hoenn mons left
Can’t wait to see Delcatty though, considering how before Gen 7, despite being an evolved Pokemon, its BST was the same as Sableye’s and Mawile’s.
Hopefully Terrakion gets covered as well
Besides Latios & Torkoal, alot of them are gonna suck.
Whismur was the very first Pokemon I found shiny, so Exploud always has a home in my heart
I have been subscribed to this channel for a very long time waiting for this day let's see the glory of exploud!
I've been waiting for this for quite some time
My first shiny ever was a whismur in gen three. Forgot to save though and I have felt guilty ever since.
I’m surprised how many comments have said whismur was their first shiny
Great analysis! Thanks for uploading! Looking forward to seeing more of you in 2022!
This reminds me of the first shiny I ever found; a shiny Loudred whilst grinding at Victory Road near Ever Grande City.
It's amazing just how much of a difference one move and/or one ability makes when it comes to making a Pokémon more viable
Maybe the first video on 2023?
I'm the ultimate life form

@@thecriticalghost4626 Ah yes, the original recoilless Head Smash user.
I thought we’re recovering from the last video but it turns out we’re not and I love it!
One of the main contenders for a "Sound type"
You can get Elektrike before Brawly
Yeah I agree. I have a lot of nostalgia for the bunch
Pumbloom was one of my favorite Pokemon, I'm glad it evolved into this awesome Pokemon!
How DESPERATELY do Normal types need Boomburst ACTUALLY?
Imagine Adaptability Porygon-Z having Boomburst. Good luck dealing with that without Ghosts.
252+ SpA Choice Specs Adaptability Porygon-Z Boomburst vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Toxapex: 290-342 (95.3 - 112.5%) -- 75% chance to OHKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Adaptability Porygon-Z Boomburst vs.
Ah yes, a 10 point stat increase to SpDef is what Exploude needed. Not a 30 point increase to Spd, or 20 to both Attack stats
Sometimes being able to take a hit better is preferred over being a glass cannon
@@roninwarriorsfan but not in this situation
Or 50 to hp so 8ts 154 instead the half assed 104 it currently has.
It can get it done, but it needs more
Awesome start to 2022. One of the Mons I wanted. Crossing my fingers for Ursaring, Drapion, Skuntank, Zangoose and Drifblim by the end of this year.
Gen 3 Exploud: “Smeargle, give me a phat beat!”
Smeargle: “Got you fam.”

I loved this Pokémon when I first started playing Emerald. Thanks for making this!
@@IgnitedQuils exploud has 20 points in each stat over loudred, same thing goes for loudred and whismur

If nothing else, I love exploud's design. He's just a mouth with legs and extra holes to make even more noise.
Awesome! This is one of my favorite normal types because of how unreal the power of Boomburst is. Thank you for making this video, FSG.
I love Exploud, it’s so underrated and it deserves the buffs it got. Hopefully it’s speed gets patched up to at least 80 at most in the next generation, it’s voice needs to be heard by more competitive users. :D
68 Speed makes sense for it, because its big and we can assume it’s lungs and its sound organs are very heavy.
Whimsur was the first pokemon I bred to have perfect 31's across the board, specifically to have a maxxed out Exploud with Boomburst for the doubles battles in the post game of gen 6 with a shuckle partner. good times.
I grew to love this pokemon over the years especially when it got choice specs boomburst
Luna Loud's favorite Pokemon before Toxtricity.
a shame they didn't mention that exploud was somewhat viable in gen 8 ou for a period, all because it could use spectrier as a way of switching in. i believe it was even ranked (very low) on the vr
My favourite memory with exploud was using a Scrappy one to sweep Phoebe's entire team in ORAS.
Like i said in the Venomoth video, it's crazy the fact that giving a Pokemon just one move can entirely change it's Competitive career
Exploding and Loudred have always been a sleeper hit type of Pokémon. I’ve never been let down in a playthrough
I did not know that Bridger had a solid performance with Exploud once. Then again, he’s always used pretty interesting teams so I can’t say I’m surprised
That team was also brought up in the Mr. Mime video.
OU: So tell me, how does one get to my ranking
for some time
Exploud: Stab Boomburst with Scrappy with Choice Specs
While I understand that not every pokemon can be viable in competitive, I love it when an unusual pokemon can find itself a niche based on it's unique attributes. Exploud finding an OU niche because of Soundproof of all things, is an excellent example of that; loved to see it.
Sometimes, a niche is all a pokemon needs to make it in OU. It depends on its how good the niche is itself when compared to the current metagame at the time.
0:28 Although I was a guitarist in a failed death metal band, we did have Exploud and damn, was he the perfect demon for our voice.
First shiny Pokémon I ever got in omega Ruby right after the first gym, and used him throughout the playthrough, I’ll never forget the fun those games gave me
Ah yes, one of the signature Pokémon of Gabby and Ty.
10 out of 10 best Pokémon! Thank you Patrons!
This is another case of adding like 20 points to its defenses or speed would solve its problems.
Exploud is the rare normal-type that actually has a pretty respectable special attack stat for its wide pool of special moves. Wish we had more pokémon like it.
Well Exploud taught us one thing, if you let your voice of love take you higher, you will succeed no matter what.
I love how the entire second half of this video is just Exploud spamming Boomburst
You said 'greatest achievement' and I immediately remembered my Exploud named Wario that I used to stomp a friend when we used to play at the uni! He couldn't believe it!
Yooooo I was literally thinking that they haven't covered exploud yet since last upload! I got my new year gift 🥰
