My husband just said “I can’t believe you watch so many boat project videos”, to which I replied “these are the only things keeping me from buying a boat” - “keep watching” he said!
Your videos are a great sanity check on the amount of work it takes to maintain a boat, thanks guys!

Seriously? Boating means…. PROJECTS! That’s the nature of the beast! If people don’t like the project videos, they don’t really understand the true cycle of the nautical lifestyle.
All those sailors swabbing and sanding the deck daily on the old wooden ships were not there being punished. They were doing the daily grind that held the ship together in good working order.

You need a Oscillating Multi-Tool with scraper blade to remove the caulk. Quite a useful tool for boat repairs, sanding, cutting, grinding for most materials.

Too Funny! I just commented the same. I literarily look around for projects to use my Oscillating Multi-Tool. I purchased to do a few RV mods, and continue to find uses it for in almost every project. The scraper blade works amazing without causing damage, let the tool do the work.

I like these boat projects. Over at Adventures of an Old SeaDog, I watched him taking his boat apart and putting it together again on the hard in New Zealand for months. The fellow who took your windows out looked a lot like one fellow who worked in that boat yard- but then a lot of hard working New Zealanders look like Wal in Footrot Flats. Good to see you made it safely to NZ. It's interesting after watching Seadog and Sailing Uma, who seem to fix everything on their own without assistance, we have the Wynns who ask experts for assistance- which is what most of us would do. I enjoyed this one. Muchos gracias, mate, as they might say down in Aukland and parts of Queenstown.

I think we found your good luck charm
Bet that mattress had enough salt to supply a pretzel factory 😂 And Nikki saying she was tired of boat projects at the beginning is a big mood...not afraid to just let it all out. Another reason to love this channel, because of how genuine they are. Completely understand her thought process, the break was well-earned. It's important to recharge and take a breather, for your mental health's sake. Once all these projects are done, in the end it will all be worth it and you'll be glad you got them done when you did.
And LOL at the "If we have to hear about your caulk one more time" "I'll show you my caulk" ...wow you went there 😳🤣 now that caught me off guard

Sooo glad you’ve got help for the window install. I was a contractor for 25 years and was better than average at caulking frames and sanitaryware etc.
However, those windows have enormous beads that they are bedded in. I wouldn’t even dream of taking that on, especially in that environment, it would be a complete mess, literally.
In the UK, to learn that skill as a professional takes 3 years and these guys are amazing. The finish they get is unbelievable and I couldn’t even come close.

Wynns: Greetings from Canada excellent caulk show :-) great humor. But seriously I appreciate the balance you bring to your version of blue water sailing, its not all sunshine and sandy beaches. While you have the distinct advantage of being able to take your home with you, a home weather it be on salt water or terra firma can't escape the responsibility of maintenance. Good on you for showing it as it is and injecting some great humor along the way.
I've been enjoying your site since motorhome days the quality and content just keep getting better. As viewers we under estimate the huge commitment it must be to post weekly episodes.

Hey I know this is a late suggestion but I work for a marina anytime we have a lot of caulk to remove from surface we use a pneumatic angle grinder with 2” 80grit and 120grit sanding disks and it significantly speeds up the process. Just need to be delicate to not go into the fiberglass.also I seen Jason was using the Milwaukee vac. I just purchased mine from tool truck two weeks ago since I do majority of electronics upgrades I’m always needing a quick clean up and after buying the Milwaukee impact driver and drill I’m amazed how great their tools are and batteries are always better than 120.

I have a couple of the Ridgid "Hybrid" tools, that take either 120V or the 18V battery, and they are very handy. I wish that they had a small vac that was a hybrid so I could plug in if power is nearby, or battery if not near an outlet. The one downside to the battery vacs though is that they just EAT battery charge.

I bought a wire off of EBay for removing windshields, under $20,it has two handles which you use to "saw" between the window and base, takes two people but it took me less than 20 minutes to remove the glass.
Works pretty much as his $1000.00 tool, cuts the caulking and prevents you from cracking/breaking your frame.
Just something to look into for future issues, may be a tool you can order now so you have it later. (just in case)

For future reference there are tools manufactured very similar to the one he used that are battery operated they are a oscillating multi tool that has multiple purposes. They're also are ones that run on 120 volts, and they're not that expensive unless you go for the upper brands like Fein. They will cut anything from steel to plastic very well and they have bits that you can buy to do exactly what you're doing right now and not damage the surface.

The marina guy was not using an oscillating tool, he was using an air powered "air saw", which is like a very small sawzall. The blade on an air saw does not go in an arc, but rather back and forth along it's length.

@@jayfitmob8645 A lot depends on the material being scraped up. I have at least 4 oscillating tools, but for some scraping jobs I break out the sawzall with a scraper blade on it. An old charter captain that also performed crop dusting in the off season and had been married for the fifth time said these words in regard to his point of view of life. If it floats, flys or the other F word it is better to rent it. Makes me smile every time I remember!

For the longest time, since watching back during the camper days, I thought you two didn't curse. It's nice seeing you do, makes you more relatable. Because I know I'd be letting them flow freely from my mouth if I had to do some of things you two have to. 🤣

They have to be careful because UA-cam demonitizes videos with certain words in them. Or too many words of that nature. I can tell you those windows would have caused a video for me to be demonitized or I would have had to bleep every few seconds.

Years ago I was keen on purchasing a boat and run charters in the Caribbean. My other half nixed the idea and now I am enjoying watching a few intrepid souls and living vicariously while watching various episodes. I am amazed at the amount of work it takes, it is not just fun and games but I can only imagine the payoffs in places visited, wind in your sails and the wonderful people met and befriended that makes it all worthwhile. Blessings! And thank you!

Those windows look really cool/nice when they are new. However, they seem too labor intensive to maintain over time. I wish there was a different more permanent solution for your sake. Perhaps the new plastic will be more UV resistant and last longer?

As an Auto Glass Technician I have a thought on your window projects. I am a little familiar with Sika though it is not a Urethane Adhesive I normally use. Anywho, on automotive windshields and other glass parts there is a black band painted on to the glass part. This black band's primary function is to block the Ultraviolet Light of the Sun from breaking down the adhesive. I am betting the lack of this Sun block on your old windows is the main reason the adhesive lost its bond to the windows. I think this is something you should look in too.

Just wondering, and I completely understand you have a lot of repairs to get done and a limited amount of funds, but how come you didn’t take out the forward port side window and replace that one as well? You did the starboard side. I would be afraid of that one starting to leak soon after sailing away. Love the videos though, and the boat projects. Nothing better than seeing the reality of owning a boat.

Under lock down only emergency repairs can be done. At least where the windows are going to be made.

    • @gonewiththewynns
      @gonewiththewynns  2 роки тому +1

Correct, under lockdown protocol only windows that are a life/safety issue (in other words, the cracked ones that are letting water in the boat) can be repaired. The others will be done as soon as lockdown eases in Auckland.

Being away from family is hard especially during special times (Grandma's 90th Birthday). Thank God for video chat, where you at least get to see, and chat with family, and friends. Leaving this country right now (or when possible) would be more of a problem right now..... more so then when you left Tonga and returned. The laws, and regulations outside of the U.S., are so different than expected. Most people in the U.S., just don't understand you can't just leave a country under lock down, and expect to return with no issues. We understand this from our past travels in Europe, and Asia while in the military. Make the best with what your dealing my friends😊
On an other note, you both are doing a great job with all the repairs, and prep on Curiosity. When done, Curiosity is going to be a happy girl ⛵⛵⛵⛵.
Enjoy great libations, sending hugs to both of you!!!

I've got to believe that there's a dremel-type tool that would help remove all that caulk, and from the number of times you wind up removing it from one place or another it would pay for itself.

I'm surprised that caulk is so dry and brittle. I wonder if that is what's contributing to the window cracks? Is there another more high performance caulk that maintains its flexibility over time?

Great job you two. Just wanted to add a pro-tip. The fiberglass and support around your navigation instruments looks sub-par. I would highly recommend re-enforcing it with pressure treated plywood strips behind the panel, or else it will crack again. Also the plywood will take the stress, instead of the fiberglass when you are out sailing. Thanks for sharing your adventures. :)
