If only your sail maker had the integrity as the window company, what a great way to say oops. If you would let Jason get the caulking gun you could use it as a cookie shooter and cake decorating in the off season

Agreed!!! While I love the idea of living on a boat, I think it's going to have to be a docked houseboat because there is no way I could handle the physical demands of sailing and maintaining a boat, especially in remote locations where help and supplies may not be readily available.

From one Milwaukee drill owner to another, set it to 1 (little slide on the top that can be 1 or 2) when you are screwing, 2 is for drilling (very high revolutions/speed). You'll strip many less screws that way :) I saw it on 2 when you were anchoring the window for shaping ;)

We are sailing around the world in our 1994 50ft steel ketch and we love her. But the maxim 'sailing around the world is really just fixing things in exotic places' is never truer than on an old steel boat. This week whilst waiting out a low pressure system in the Azores we decided to tackle some very visible rust on our cabin top. I have been procrastinating with this job as i knew it was a bigger job than what it looked like. But it was unsightly and getting worse and we really do like our old gal to look as good as she can. So out came the tools.
So why am i telling you this??? Because I want to give you guys a HUGE thank you for sharing how you do caulking. I watched carefully as you always seem to get a great smooth clean finish. And whilst I have done a fair bit of caulking on Steely I am never that happy with the outcome (neatness, smoothness) and this job I had to tackle had a lot of very visible caulking as the last step. I used your small sections at a time and wet down with a spray bottle and no gloves method. and it worked like a charm!!
Thank you for sharing your tips even when you don't realise how helpful they really might be. You guys are awesome and we love watching you (even though we are sailing around the world ourselves!!)
Oh and we think we have worked out what your new boat is :) Happy Happy :)

This is my first day to watch you two and this is going to be
interesting. Please keep us posted on the windows and whether they leak
or separate from your caulk. I have never installed acrylic in a
fiberglass boat before but I did install a boatload of glass into cars
and trucks at the automotive glass shop that I owned and operated for 20
years. Silicone! I sure hope it is some kind of super-duper stuff
specially made to adhere acrylic to fiberglass and stand up to seawater
and wind! It sure looked to me like what you scraped out from around
your glasses was urethane, not silicone. I would have scraped the old
adhesive off down to the the fiberglass, then applied urethane primer to
the fiberglass and to the new window, let that dry and run the urethane
around the opening (pinch weld), not to the acrylic, give it a firm
press, tape it down for a day and remove the tape. With urethane, you
could have actually water tested the window for leaks while the urethane
was still wet. Anyway, as much fun as Jason had playing with the
caulking gun I hope it turns out good for you. Oh, and Nikki, you are a Cutie Pie! You tell Jason he had better keep you dry inside that boat! All the best to you both! My hat is off to you for your courage.

Nikki, I've been following the channel for a few years now, and even I get frustrated with those allergies! My wife has helped a LOT of people with their allergies using a combination of natural remedies, homoeopathy, and identifying and treating the underlying causes of these allergies. She might be able to help you with yours. She can't fix everyone of course, but she can usually make a difference at least. She's super busy, but I bet she'd be willing to test your hair if you sent her a sample.

A Tip for finishing of silicon is get a spray bottle and fill it with soapy water, when you have applied the silicon and you are ready to clean up the extra spray it all with the soapy water including the work surface and then remove the excess silicon as it will not adhere to the soapy water solution and you will get a very good smooth finish. No more need to used chemicals to do any clean ups.

One thing I like about my 42 year old boat is glass ports and lights. Never replace, only rebed unless the glass gets broken

Try any engine bay with twin mercruiser engines. Simple task: change spark plugs. Oh look how easy it is after changing the plugs mid engine bay. Moves to port and starboard side of engines and one seriously begins to consider training an octopus to finish the job... Hi Jeff meet my friend Bob, he's a boat mechanic.... and a contortionist.

Please take care in the sun in New Zealand. It may not feel like the tropics sun, but don't be fooled, when it is out in the summer, the sun is VICIOUS! Even on a cloudy day in these parts in the summer you will get FRIED! Looks like you are finally making some serious progress, well done!

Miraculous transition, those windows look Awesome! Just think how much that would have cost to have it Done! For amateurs you grasp things pretty quick! I love your solution for the gap issue with the windows and it Worked! Nikki, I knew it was getting to you when you were saying some testy things like "Don't Screw It Up"! Now that you are over the Window Hump, the End is In Sight! 'Good on Ya'! I am sure that Chocolate tasted sweeter as a reward for the Triumph of Finishing a Bugger of Job! Are those new windows tinted vs. the old ones? Your Boat is going to look like New when this Project is all Done. What is the Stat on the Sails? Gosh I hope that nightmare has a good ending! God Bless, be Safe, and Keep on Keepin' ON!

Chocolate makes everything better!!!! The installed windows look great and it’s obvious that your both learning a lot as you go through your task list. Don’t worry about the project supplies filled spaces as anyone who’s done any list of projects knows that it takes tools and supplies to do anything. The fact that you have many different projects ongoing would be a challenge for anyone. You ought to see our 2,600 sf home right now as we’re doing several projects to get it ready for sale next year so we can finally get on the road with our 2020 Fifth Wheel. Your doing great and moving forward…

As a daughter of a carpenter who worked summers with her dad during high school i can say that once he found out how neat I was the calling became my job lol. Not that I was always happy about it but at least there wasn't call every where you could step in! The guys didn't see the problem spending hours using a knife scraping excess off. I would have like an electric call gun though lol. Great job! As foe your nose get you some Affrin (or compatible off brand) nose spray in the power pump. One shot opens you for 12 hours easily. PS i an a nurse so this isn't the carpenter advising you!
