Freddie I bought a 2020 honda monkey 125 sold it 12mths later for exactly what I paid for it 3.5k the guy who bought it had a motorcycle rack fitted to the back of a new yellow suzuki jimny and then fitted the yellow monkey to the back of the jimny when he went away for the weekend a really cool setup..

Lovely that they brought this back. Back in 1975 when I bought my first new bike I was sorely tempted, but 17 year old me in leather jacket and a cigarette in my mouth went for the CB125 instead. I thought that it was cooler and gave me more street cred. Those were the days... 🙂

Cracking little bike there. One point I would mention, they're good for putting into a motorhome or on the rack at the back. Try doing that with Enfield, and it may end in grief.

In 1970-1972 I had a friend that had 2 of the Honda 50cc mini-cycles and one of the CT-Trail 70 bikes. This CT-Trail 70 became your DAX. We used to treat all 3 terribly and they just ran and ran... Amazingly, they became our favorites, living in the very flat terrain of the tidewater area of south eastern VA, here in the states. The DAX is a much improved version of this classic bike, and yes it belongs in the dirt and mud and running over little 2-7 foot high humps and bumps... Hours of fun for beginners to experts alike. I hope they bring it to the States.

My first bike! Did my cbt in December 2022 and bought it. It has made me fall in love with biking. Still learning, still confidence building but can’t wait for the summer. Never, ever sat on or ridden a motorbike before. Light enough for me to handle with confidence. Simple enough for me to look after. Oh and by the way I’ve just turned 66. Ultimately aiming to take it in the MoHo and ‘do’ Europe!

Hello Freddie ! I beg your pardon sir. But as a young lad here in the United States of America . We actually had a version of the DAX . It wasn't called a DAX of course . It was the Honda Trail 70 . It was a 70cc trail bike and looked very much like the one you are showing in your video . I know this because my Dad bought me one back in the early 1970s I started riding at the age of three on a Honda Trail 50 . I have owned many a bike since . Dirt bikes and street bikes . I'm old now just stick with my 04 Harley Road king and 650 H1 Arctic cat TRV ATV. Love your videos . Keep up the great work !!

Brought back great memories of the CT70 I learned to ride on in the US. Exact same shape and build but with folding handlebars that made it possible to put it into my dads station wagon. But here it really needs to be a 150cc because that is the minimum displacement to get it onto the freeway. In the US, you just have to jump on them for an exit or two as rural roads don't always connect to everywhere.

  • @ricatiman

Back in the early 70's my family used the DAX as a pit bike at the track while I was racing flat track motorcycles . My Mom, Sister and Dad all got around the track on it for years, sometimes all 3 at once - and all of us racers, being teenage racers, would stage impromptu short track races, sliding around some cones in a parking lot on our pitbikes. The fabulous, superb handling (way better than our Monkey bike), DAX ruled those little funtime races. And - they do great wheelis! Just hold down the foot shifter, rev the engine (the clutch is disengaged) , make certain you are pointed straight and are balanced, then lift your foot to dump the clutch and it WHEELIES forever! The DAX is, in my opinion, the finest small motorcycle ever built in the history of the world!
I am hoping they become available here in Canada, as I will get the first one available here...

This model was not just carried in Europe in the late 60’s early 70’s, it was also in the U.S. as a Honda Trail 90, and a Honda Trail 50..they were the most reliable, longest lasting bikes made..but back then all Honda’s were. This looks like the original Honda Trail 90..

At 55 I returned to 2 wheels in 2008 after a 36 year hiatus. Since then I have taken my CBT every 2 years and owned a new Vespa 125 GTV, a Vespa 125 GTS and a Honda Forza 125. In 2019 I bought my Honda Monkey new and still own it at 70. On those 4 bikes I have totalled 38000 miles including 10000 on the Monkey.
In summary I have loved 125s so much that I have never once considered taking my motorcycle test. I keep telling myself that I'll probably be too old to ride the next year but I just seem to keep on going.

It is awesome that Honda has brought back the retro minibikes, but in 125cc. 125 is pretty well the perfect size for fun and practical bikes for around town and on the trail. And the icon Honda engine layout is awesome👍 When I was a kid back in the 70s we all had minibikes. Great review, great video, Freddy. Glad to see Honda still making great bikes at the 125cc size and reasonable price point. Am based in Singapore and am considering a newer Super Cub but have a CG125 back in London and have always found it reliable and good on fuel. Used to ride two different BMWs but at the end of the day I just found I didn't need them in London nor could I afford to maintain them as a student back in the day. The CG125 took a fair bit longer to ride Europe the several times I did it but easily more fun and gets people talking than my GS ever did. I imagine the Dax would be similarly good fun for a longer trip on smaller roads abroad, and a great way to see a new place.

This video brings back memories..the Honda Dax appears to be an updated reissue of the Honda 'Mini Trail' series of bikes from years ago. My uncle had a Honda 'Trail 70' which as I recall looked almost exactly like the Dax. He had his 'Trail 70' on the pretense of having a small easily transportable bike to use for camping and hunting trips. I remember he brought it along on a deer hunting trip..nothing happening on that trip so we spent the afternoon zipping about on trails and backroads..two grown men and a teenager taking turns on that bike having a ball. I am so glad Honda reincarnated that concept..hope it's available in the US I might be tempted to grab one.

Yes I'd dream of riding the Bonnie o'er the ocean as well as walking on water, but that's not going to happen. It's 6-7 miles a day for me on my go nowhere bike in front of the Tele. I will never attempt to ride a motorbike on American Interstates with 18-wheeler truck traffic and crazy distracted drivers. I will only ride in my town with its suburban streets. The max speed here for these streets is 45 mpg (72 km/h). All of the Honda 125 mini-moto bikes are perfect but that Dak takes me back to being a kid and watching the teens on their Honda CT70 “Trail 70”.

Monkey Z125 owner here since 2020, has a lot of same parts. It's still a thrill to ride and everywhere you park, people will look and stare and ask question about it. The fun per € is incredible. Same issue with brake pedal paint btw, but perhaps a powdercoat to fix it ;-)
FUN FACT: You can easily push the bike to turn it on in first gear!! (When my battery was empty I just was able to push it!)

I have a Monkey and Trail125. Had a SuperCub for a few years that I rode From California to Maine back to Cali. Sold the SuperCub a few months after I got back from my cross country road trip. Of the three mini bikes, my favorite is the Monkey. Most fun to ride and oddly being the smallest most comfy too.

We had 2 Honda Ct 70s from the early 80s on our farm in Canada for years . These things were bulletproof and could carry a 160 lb adult up steep off-road hills easily. We could ride all day and use 1 Lt of gas ! Nice to see this out now .

    First comment : Nice videography.
In 1977, I purchased a new Honda Mini Trail 70 ( ct 70 ) for $ 453.00 (usd) . When I rode it to school, all the other kids laughed at me , at that time most of the kids had either a full size motorcycle or a moped ( mopeds were quite popular but they were underpowered & expensive costing $ 8 - 900 dollars ) . The moped shops sold Motobecane, Batavia, Garelli, Peugeot and Puch. My ct 70 had orange paint, 3 spd semiautomatic transmission, 6 v electrics and 0.9 gal fuel tank ( 130 mpg ) with a top speed of 55 mph. I rode my mini trail from the Los Angeles area to Lake Tahoe and back & to Santa Rosa twice. I remember riding across the Golden Gate bridge.

My dear mum had a Honda C50. That had a centrifugal clutch and heal and toe gear change as well.

  • @Jagshemasher
    @Jagshemasher Рік тому +1

The gear change is exactly like the old C90. I think the basic engine in this has been around for about 50 years now in one form or another. It will likely run forever with minimal maintenance and get great fuel consumption. As you say simplicity is king. I hope they bring it over to North America (Canada for me) - We have Grom's and Navi's and Monkey's but not too much else. 160 mpg - my jaw just dropped. I would certainly get one as an around town bike.

I just passed one year of riding in the south central U.S. on a 2015 Honda NC700x, my first and only motorcycle. While I know the small Honda bikes would be pushed to the limit on the interstates I ride and the touring I plan to do this year, I can't help but yearn for a monkey or trail 125. The lovely blend of retro and modern styles combined with Honda design sense and practicality makes them some of the most attractive bikes on the road. Sadly the dealerships in my area don't keep any ready for test drives, so I'll have to wait till I have the money and garage space for a companion to my NC, before I can dip a toe in the 125 market. Your video just added the Dax to my list, here's hoping it hits the U.S. market!

A most excellent watch, Team Dobbs.
I'd have one tomorrow if I was running more than one bike. For local trips.
But I'd love to do one of my longer trips on one. Just for the gell of it. How about doing a longer trip for a few days as a challenge?
The exhaust is very Honda ss50 from the 70's, and of the Honda CL scrambler range from the 70's and also very like the pipe on the Australian Honda Postie bike. Very traditional.
    Good watch.
    Safe, happy travels 👍

Great video per usual - always top shelf. IMHO these bikes are overpriced for what you get, especially when compared to the price of the RE 350s - you get so much more in the 350s for a modest increase in price. Safe riding from Ohio USA! 😎

We took our CT125 "Trail", put it on a hitch carrier behind our Toyota Sienna minivan, drove it from California to Texas for a hang gliding comp, where we used it as a general runabout. Then we went from Texas to the world's biggest airshow at Oshkosh, Wisconsin, where again we used it as in-event transportation... and we weren't the only ones. A virtual pletora of people were running around in recreational vehicles with Honda Minibikes (Cub, Monkey, Trail, and Grom) on their hitch carriers.
You should totally haul the Dax on your Defender. I'm looking at a Dax for the wife to ride.

    Discs both ends? Good.
    Clutch-less, AKA semi-automatic. Good.
    Maneuverability. Good.
162 UK MPG. Good. Better even than my commuter (2015 PCX 150).
No basic fairing for winter commuting. Bad. Can it be fitted?
DIY maintenance of the semi-auto transmission. Maybe bad. Most DIYers will not be able to do this well.
    Price. Not so bad.
Would I buy one? As a toy, yes. As my commuter, no.
The Honda CT125 Hunter Cub is about the same price, perhaps. Or the current Super Cub 125, though its styling is too refined for a bike of that nature - a bike that should be wholly utilitarian, in my view.
    Great video, thanks a lot.
