Thanks for the video. I’m torn between the Dax and the Monkey, only because I prefer the retro style. I think the semi auto of the Dax is okay.. It’s served well on the C90’s for years.
Personally I'd take the Dax. It looks more like an original design. The other two seem to be like an updated version of an old design like the new mini or fiat 500.
Good review but I'll stick with my Super Cub 125, used it last year to do the NC500 great fun but getting there and back from nr. Reading was the worst part 1720 miles in a week but the small wheels on these would never have coped with the long days and wet roads like the Cub. Back up there next week 3rd June to do part of the four points trip so Dunnet Head and Ardnamurchan Point to get to but this time on my Rebel 1100 so no scary bits on the Motorways.
100% with you on the fabulous Grom. I rode one last year and loved every minute. I was so impressed with the engine that I swapped the Grom for a CB300R single which has an equally amazing power output - just more of it! Honda really know how to squeeze torque power and fuel economy out of a small and apparently simple engine.
I've got a theory we spend most of our lives figuring out we need to regress to our child experiences to gain true joy. It's all about the puppy dreams. These toys are a way to go back in your mind and get some smiles.
Hi Andy , at the moment my mini bike range includes 2 groms , the five speed ,1 monkeybike 5 speed and 4 benelli tnts , I told you the grom is the best road bike , but only just , the monkey is a riot , the benellis are impressive too , I’m of an age where I’m quite happy to not take myself serious , I’ve been there done that !! and still have big bikes anyway , I’d tern myself as a 60 year old teenager , and proud of it , any of the bikes are a bargain , it’ll be illegal to have this much fun soon , anything under 125 cc is banned by 2030 , and that will come round very quickly , 👍👍👎👎👎🏍🏍
Apparently so ,new 125s and under from 2030 are getting the chop , which is stupid , so even if they make them 150 cc your going to have a license upgrade , unless the government bailout , 🏍🏍👎👎👍
Yeah I’m a bike addict and have a rocket 3 , 2 Ducati diavels , triumph street twin , I bought a duel motor peddle bike recently , it actually does 32 mph up hill without peddling it’s ok as toy , I’m just not ready for a electric motorbike yet , I’m still keeping up my hooligan intent , but I’m toying with a scooter ( dragster 200 ) unless the 500 arrives first , as I’ve stated mini bike are a riot , 🏍🏍👍👍
The Grom it is then👍 All have been my favorite at some point over the last few months, now I just have to buy my bike clothing and book my CBT. Been 30+ years since riding on 2 wheels but time for some fun.🙋
Good choice 👌 Ive just bagged a 1st gen 2015 Grom. Bone stock, 1 owner with only 1500 miles. Black with red decals, gold forks & wheels. Been after one for a while and its a keeper. Its that good a condition im not sort i can/will modified it. 👍
Monkey is the best of all...on mods and cargo...racks...everything the monkey has the full minibike package...grom is more for a teenager that cant have a big bike but only this👌🏻
Thanks for this super review, I have the Grom or MSX125, as it was known when I bought it new in 2015. We have been carrying it with us in the back of our Motorhome and my wife and I amuse the campers and local residents when we produce it from the campers garage and take off, two up to explore the Cornish lanes. Following your review I am currently looking at a Z900 RS SE which should be a little more comfortable but will require a trailer due to size and weight.
Sorry to correct you but the Grom/Msx was available in Europe and the UK from 2013 same as in the US and Japan. The Monkey should not be less powerfull it only feels that way because of higher tires.(The msx has smaller tires) Engine output should be about the same (same engine)
When I noticed today's video was a short, I had to watch it twice and read all the comments. Since I live in a semi-rural area I could only safely ride it on strictly back roads. Then I'd have to worry about getting run over by enormous JD tractors or playful deer. Always a fun time watching the end of your videos. 😊😊👍👍 🏍🏍🏍🙋♂️
Great comparison. I agree the Grom is the best. I bought both the Monkey and the Grom… and sold both after 4-5 months. Although they’re a laugh, I found they were too big to be toys and too little to be of any real use😊
They're amazing second bikes. I don't think they could be an only bike but as a commuter / play thing they're great. My grom is easily capable of getting over 140mpg on the commute but also can scrape it's pegs, wheelie and let you get your knee down when you fancy it. The only downside is that whilst you can keep up with traffic on twisty national speed limit roads you can't overtake so it can get quite frustrating.
if you don't need the motorway and can commute on them they are amazing, I prefer my monkey to any big bike ive had for commuting, its way way cheaper to run, easier to filter through everything and easier to manually move about the garage or wherever and round twistys its more fun for me because you can just ring its tits off where as on a big bike your braking before you've even accelerated, still love my big bikes for touring but day to day im a 125 convert
Thank you Mr. Flyer. What a fun series this was and I agreed that the "Grom" was probably the slightly better bike, although my choice was based on your review so maybe that's why lol. :>)
I am 57 years old and have had all sorts of motorcycles. I currently own a 2023 Multi V2S. Last year, I got the idea to buy a mini bike to transport on a hitch carrier (less complicated than a trailer) for my RV and also to take to my house in Florida for the winter. Anyway, I wanted a Monkey but none were available in Canada, so I got a Grom. I preferred the look of the older Groms, I can't get used to the look at all, in fact, I find it ugly... It's more suited for teens getting started with motorcycles. But for an old guy who wants a second bike, the Monkey is much better. I'm not originally a fan of old or vintage stuff, but the Monkey is a work of art in itself. It reminds me of my first bike; I had a mini trail from Kawa. And in the end, on the Grom, I just feel like people think I bought a bike too small for me (I'm 6 feet tall). Whereas on a Monkey, it's obvious that it's kind of clownish, but that's the point of riding a Mini Bike. So, I'm coming back to Canada next week, and will swap my Grom for a Monkey and play Coco the clown!😆
I just bought myself a Benelli tnt 125. We cant get new groms or monkeys in Australia any more and the 2nd hand market is ridiculous, so i got the Benelli. Its a real hoot. I have 2 “big bikes” but the little tnt is just for mucking around, short trips etc. i love the look of the Dax. I havent seen that before.
When there is a dax, there shoould be a hunter or super cub as well. It is basically same engine. I personally would want dax or some cub only with 5 gear kit and with 10-11 kw. I ride semi-auto with same power and it does not like hills. Otherwise it is super slow tempo fun and great in traffic, but really when I go to joy ride in my area there is too much hills, and when it is really windy it sucks.
Great summary mate and I agree with your conclusion. Your comment about Mario and Coco had me chuckling as it summed up exactly what I thought. Yep I would have the Grom.
I think you made the right choice, the GROM is more quirky, whereas the other 2 are modern takes of a years old design. The GROM is its own style, and the one i`d choose. Here`s a question for you Andy, which would you choose out of a GROM, or a Royal Enfield Hunter 350?.
A mate of mine had owned a Grom and currently runs a Monkey bike to work and much prefers the latter. I think it's mostly a comfort thing,I'm a bit under 6 feet and 200 pounds and I could live with a Monkey,I didn't even attempt his Grom,at my stage of decrepitude I'd need to be craned off of the thing. I wish Honda would bring in the Philippines market only XRM125, a cross between a commuter scooter and a trail bike, the things are bullet-proof and great fun with suspension suited to poor road surfaces. Same motor as these and same gearbox, heel and toe thing as the Dax. I ride most days in the UK and I adapted to to it very quickly. I think of all the "quirky" 125 I'd go for the Suzuki Van Van,which seems to drop out of their range then reappear again constantly.
I had a Sym Wolf 150 classic that was based on the Honda CB125, and that would put a smile on my face until I got on the highway. I thought it had a more in common with Grom than a large motorcycle.
I don’t know which one will reign, but I can tell you that I am just waiting for the Dax to be available in the US and go get one on its very first day :)
Being 5’6” (167cm) and my girlfriend being 4’10” (147cm), it’s the Grom because you can have a passenger on it and the bike is more of our mini proportion size for non-highway riding in the USA. The Monkey is not designed for 2 people (where are the back foot pegs!). Anyway, it will be my first bike (but I’ve ridden bikes all throughout asia during travel). 125cc is about right and I would never want a bike over 150cc (though I’m not interested in highway driving).
Great review, I have the 2023 Monkey and I agree with the Characature of the Monkey! the red and yellow look very childish....thats why I went with the Black.
Unfortunately the little Hondas have been axed over here in Australia. In 2022 the design rules required every bike to have two channel ABS and these bikes didn't have it. The ABS models only have single channel and they miss out. It's a crazy requirement on such a small and low powered bike and it's a shame that they've become a dying breed. I nearly bought a Grom for a little city bike but the price over here was out of whack for such a little bike. For just about the same money I ended up with a Husqvarna Svartpilen 401, a total hooligan of a bike with styling as eccentric as the Grom.
I had an extremely nice red Monkey that had lots of great mods and regretfully had to sell it a few years back. I’m now getting a DAX!! I’m well aware the Monkey is technically the better bike but I really want the ability to ride two up and have zero interest in the grom. Also riding some basic dirt roads is a regular thing for me in Arizona so the Dax wins. And although yes technically not as good in performance it’s still negligible in difference from a real world day to day application but two up is massive!!!
Ah, security & garage door-pole wise - beware of limbo-dancing bike thieves! Never seen the place so empty, what you missed while filming was Carole holding a silent-auction in the yard for the rest of your bikes - new shoes ARE expensive y'know! : )
Grom makes the most sense, but I think its ugly, but I learned to ride on the original Dax MT70 and had a MT50 in the 70's. Did my rider training on a Grom and it was good fun. Ended up getting a ADV160 instead so me and the wife can ride 2-up. Nostalgia aside, riding just one person, the Super Cub makes the most sense to me.
The Grom would be an excellent toy for taking around the various fields covering 19 acres that one of my sister's and her family own. A farm for nipping around on a frugal machine would be a good home for it too.
Very explanatory video, going to see the others. I'm planning to get my license this year, mostly for obligation, for commute. I'm looking for something easy to ride, just around the city (Biscay, Basque Country) and a reduced size cause I'm short (1'59 cm). My researchs end with the same result, the Grom. Also considering the Super Cub for the passenger seat.
Purely on looks I think I'd go for the Monkey *because* it is so comedy but I can't really imagine buying one of these, unless I had a specific purpose for one.
Hi, the best choice is actually TNT from Benelli.. It wins in every discipline, maybe only the quality is better by Honda.. However, Id also choose MSX if the choice was outta these 3 :)
Great vid as always. Literally bought his and hers monkey bikes yesterday for me and the Mrs - 2 banana yellow for a bit of green lane riding and silly laughs on short rides… they will join the Street Triple RS, Speed Twin 1200 and 390 Duke…. Initially kept the visor down so as to not be recognised!!! Keep up the great work and always love your content….
I just asked this question in your Grom and Monkey videos a few minutes ago. I didn't see you did a pick the best of Minimotos video 😅 Same thing for me, the Grom has a lot more going for it at a lower price. In Canada the Monkey goes for 6,130$ and the Grom 4,780$. That's about 1,300$ more, I can't justify paying more just for cuteness 😂 Thanks for clearing that for me, going to buy my new Grom next month 👍
Me and my mate did the Prescott Speed hill Climb on a grom 2 up, I can still remember hearing the commentator laughing over the tannoy on the way up, we are both 6 footers, hilarious.
Agree the Grom is the best. I hade the Monkey for a couple of years, in the end had to sell as it used to give me real backache, having ridden the MSX the riding position is better. Having said all that, they are great fun however a word of warning the quality is not the best.
Hi Andy, interesting the price differences these things sell at around the world. Here in Thailand where there are many MSX / Grom’s on the street the sell for 69,900 THB on the road, that’s less than £1,650!! The Monkey bike is significantly more.
Defo the Dax as you can ride in sandals😂, and ironically the best handling Honda with you this engine with be the super cub, larger skinny wheels makes them so agile and chuck able. Great reviews!!
The clutch less 4 speed dax for me best 2 up and love the traditional c90 pizza bike vibes as for why anyone would want to ride 2 up on it easy coz it’s bloody hilarious
I wouldn’t take the Dax purely because at my ripe old age I’m not interested in learning a different type of gearbox! I’d probably go with the Monkey, if you’re going to have a mini bike, you’ve got to embrace the silliness. What other people think shouldn’t enter the equation at all (given everything is legal and above board). That said, I’ve got no use for a mini bike so I’m unlikely to be buying any of them any time soon.
I did test ride a 2019 Monkey. Yes it was a grin. Don't think I'd ever buy a mini bike. I'm just too big (read 16 1/2 stone and 5'11" !) to want to ride one. Once passing a test, well things like an RE Hunter are available for very similar cash. Yes, not the same market, but appeals a real lot more to me. In reality, if I have £4k hanging around, I'd wait a bit longer, get a few more £K and buy a second hand Street Triple. I miss the 660cc one I had ! Don't tell the Speed Twin, the Street Triple was a better "fun for one" bike ! ( but useless for carrying pillions)
Only if they were the only bikes around, I would be forced to choose one. The Grom has the best looks, the most power. I would choose that one but I still wouldn’t like it. Luckily there are so many bikes around that I would like.
Interesting "little" vid. I think I've only really ever seen the Grom around & it doesn't look bad. It's actually quite cool in real life but still don't think I'd ever have a reason buy one. I just don't know what that might be.
The Dax should go off road just find the one I had as a kid I rode it everywhere off road lots of fun if they sell it here in the USA I’ll buy it just to relive my child hood again lol
Couldn’t pass up a recent deal on the Kawasaki z125pro “used” with a whopping 24 miles on it for a very reasonable 1,000 dollars off the out the door price of a new one. Love Hondas products but the deal was too good.
I would pick the grom if I had to choose but I wouldn’t mind owning all 3. I ride my Zuma nearly everyday and it never gets old. I’m taking it on a 2500 mile trip from Dallas to Oklahoma, Colorado,Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and back in June. Funny part is I only have 4 days off work to do it. Man I can’t wait! 🛵💨💨💨
I have a 23 Grom SP in white over here in the States, I love it but mine has the 5th gear loud whining noise when the bike gets good and hot. I just also picked up a 23 Kawasaki Z125 pro, I don't think you get them in the UK anymore? I gotta say in a lot of ways I prefer the Z especially the suspension, it feels way firmer yet still plush. In that way it feels like a more grown up motorcycle. The downside is it's only a 4 speed so it hits the limiter at 67mph the Grom with it's 5 speed is closer to 75mph. Given those are best cases scenario usually downhill speeds 😅
Grom is pointless. Just a small Street Naked. Mainly popular in UK, with ratty teens. Monkey and Dax are completely cool, unique and look like nothing else. People who like Grom because it " feels more like" a full size bike, completely miss the point. 😂
@mlws007 If you wanted a Street Naked, in 2015, there were loads of proper ones to choose from (all with foot pegs) and BTW Monkey was around in the 60s
I honestly would love to have the Monkey, or it's derivative the Gorilla. I like the higher exhaust for offroad use. Somehow, telling someone to come ride my Monkey sounds rather naughty. LOL.
If the dax had the same clutch n 5 speed it would be a clear winner (why do Honda do weird stuff) also buy a cheap plastic garden shed n put ur mower n garden 🪴 tools in 😂👍
Nothing beats the look of the Dax. It screams 70s and brings me back to my childhood with a 1970 ct70.

Thanks for a fun episode to tie up the mini-bike reviews. I wish I had a use for one of them, as the grin factor would be off the charts.
I pick my monkey up this week cant wait !!
They're banning under 125s in 2030 ?
Apparently so ,new 125s and under from 2030 are getting the chop , which is stupid , so even if they make them 150 cc your going to have a license upgrade , unless the government bailout , 🏍🏍👎👎👍
@@jimhedley7459 thanks for your reply, what a stupid rule ! 125 sales will go nuts in 2029 then.
@@jimhedley7459 love it 🙌
Cracking looking bikes, but the Grom does it for me too. I'd love a go on one
The Grom it is then👍 All have been my favorite at some point over the last few months, now I just have to buy my bike clothing and book my CBT. Been 30+ years since riding on 2 wheels but time for some fun.🙋
Love the Dax ,the gear box is super easy to use and make the bike fantastic around town ,great bike love the retro styling
It's a brilliant bike, I have one and I use it for food deliveries in my part time! Never let me down up to 17,000 now . Best bike I've owned
Good choice 👌
Ive just bagged a 1st gen 2015 Grom.
Good call!
Sorry to correct you but the Grom/Msx was available in Europe and the UK from 2013 same as in the US and Japan.
The Monkey should not be less powerfull it only feels that way because of higher tires.(The msx has smaller tires) Engine output should be about the same (same engine)
I’m always happy to be corrected - watching this back I made a few slips of the tongue too!
Technically I don’t think this video is a short…think those have to be tagged as such and filmed in portrait mode….
Same here I’ll take the Grom. you gotta love the gear indicator. slick and nimble.
Great comparison. I agree the Grom is the best. I bought both the Monkey and the Grom… and sold both after 4-5 months. Although they’re a laugh, I found they were too big to be toys and too little to be of any real use😊
Yes I can understand that entirely and you’ve confirmed what I was thinking….
Loved that little series, I knew you would favour the MSX and that would be my choice. Keep smiling.........😄
Thank you Mr. Flyer. What a fun series this was and I agreed that the "Grom" was probably the slightly better bike, although my choice was based on your review so maybe that's why lol. :>)
Not sure I would ever want one of these, but each to their own, and as they say variety is the spice of life😮
I agree!
A brilliant as always review and what funky modes of transport i just enjoy your honest and unbiased comments.
Many thanks!
There's a NZ couple who did the trans america trail on groms with small modifications to the suspension and knobbly tires.
I remember enjoying that series! KiwiGrom is the channel name :)
I think you made the right choice, the GROM is more quirky, whereas the other 2 are modern takes of a years old design. The GROM is its own style, and the one i`d choose.
Here`s a question for you Andy, which would you choose out of a GROM, or a Royal Enfield Hunter 350?.
Huinter 350 all day long.....
@@TheMissendenFlyer I had an idea it would be, and it`s cheaper too.
Love the Honda mini bikes, and think how many bikes you could have in the garage if all you had were mini bikes 😁
Enjoyable review, if the Dax had proper gear change and clutch I think it would be more of a winner.
I agree....
Nice round up of the Honda minis.... I suspect it will get many views 😊
We shall see - so far it’s my worst performing video out of the last 10…..!
He he - either that or I just had to move my bikes out to make this video!
I like the look of the Dax, and love their stylised logo for it. Just wish it had the conventional 5 speed the others have.
I like the dax and monkey, looking get one after Xmas.. can’t choose lol
Is the Grom a stable, safe bike to ride on current British roads. Does the front brake have enough feel to not lock up easily
Yes and yes!
I like that quick TMF The Small Prints V5 😂
I’m glad you spotted it!
Andy, it was the gold wheels that did it for you, you can’t fool me !
I think it probably was!
Purely on looks I think I'd go for the Monkey *because* it is so comedy but I can't really imagine buying one of these, unless I had a specific purpose for one.
Really good for bag snatching I hear😂
Hi, the best choice is actually TNT from Benelli.. It wins in every discipline, maybe only the quality is better by Honda.. However, Id also choose MSX if the choice was outta these 3 :)
Great vid as always. Literally bought his and hers monkey bikes yesterday for me and the Mrs - 2 banana yellow for a bit of green lane riding and silly laughs on short rides… they will join the Street Triple RS, Speed Twin 1200 and 390 Duke…. Initially kept the visor down so as to not be recognised!!! Keep up the great work and always love your content….
Thank you Justin and enjoy your new bikes!
I just asked this question in your Grom and Monkey videos a few minutes ago. I didn't see you did a pick the best of Minimotos video 😅
Same thing for me, the Grom has a lot more going for it at a lower price. In Canada the Monkey goes for 6,130$ and the Grom 4,780$. That's about 1,300$ more, I can't justify paying more just for cuteness 😂
Thanks for clearing that for me, going to buy my new Grom next month 👍
Enjoy….
Me and my mate did the Prescott Speed hill Climb on a grom 2 up, I can still remember hearing the commentator laughing over the tannoy on the way up, we are both 6 footers, hilarious.
Nice one!
Agree the Grom is the best. I hade the Monkey for a couple of years, in the end had to sell as it used to give me real backache, having ridden the MSX the riding position is better. Having said all that, they are great fun however a word of warning the quality is not the best.
Yea The Monkey or the DAX ❤
Hi Andy, interesting the price differences these things sell at around the world. Here in Thailand where there are many MSX / Grom’s on the street the sell for 69,900 THB on the road, that’s less than £1,650!! The Monkey bike is significantly more.
Now that is a bargain!
Defo the Dax as you can ride in sandals😂, and ironically the best handling Honda with you this engine with be the super cub, larger skinny wheels makes them so agile and chuck able. Great reviews!!
Thank you very much Alistair!
The Monkey would be my choice... there's just something really endearing about it
I did test ride a 2019 Monkey.
I agree!
Awesome bud cheer's 👍🏻
Only if they were the only bikes around, I would be forced to choose one.
The Grom has the best looks, the most power. I would choose that one but I still wouldn’t like it. Luckily there are so many bikes around that I would like.
When I was 12 I working cub and dax both look good till now , hopefully they make cbr125 cbr150 xD look cool bro
Great review
Cheers!
Love the hoodie! Well smart
It’s nice isn’t it….
@@TheMissendenFlyer class!
Interesting "little" vid. I think I've only really ever seen the Grom around & it doesn't look bad. It's actually quite cool in real life but still don't think I'd ever have a reason buy one. I just don't know what that might be.
No I’m with you on that - fun bikes, but would I own one? Probably not….
I read the thing! Yes, my pausing skills are indeed good enough :)
Well done!
My favourite kid's show this.
I feel like the riding position of the GROM is better too.
Hoped to bump into you at the Bike Shed Show in London today TMF. Had to make do with Charley Boorman 😕 😢
Oh dear- sorry to hear that!!! :0) Hope you had a good time - cracking show isn't it...I went last year and loved it (no invite this year sadly...)
Very interesting 👍
I'd buy one of the little Benellis - like the TNT 150 or 125. Way more style and cheaper.
I just wish Honda would bring the CT 125 Trail to the European Market. 👍🏼
I love mine. Would win this hands down.
100%
Shouldn’t the cub 125 be in this conparement?
Small cc but not a Mini-bike IMO.
Well I’m not sure that’s really a mini bike is it? Yes it’s a 125 and great value…give you that…
@@TheMissendenFlyer I apologize, my bad. I was just thinking about the engine volume. Andy, have you been testdriving the cub 125?
I can imagine!! And no, I don’t think we do get the mini Kawasaki here….
Morning brother.
Morning….
Grom is pointless. Just a small Street Naked. Mainly popular in UK, with ratty teens. Monkey and Dax are completely cool, unique and look like nothing else. People who like Grom because it " feels more like" a full size bike, completely miss the point. 😂
Fair enough....
In 2015 there only was the msx the others were not available and do not have pillion pegs.
@mlws007 If you wanted a Street Naked, in 2015, there were loads of proper ones to choose from (all with foot pegs) and BTW Monkey was around in the 60s
Buy all three 😊
Braindead take 😂
My pausing skills are indeed, impressive.
Well done.....
I honestly would love to have the Monkey, or it's derivative the Gorilla. I like the higher exhaust for offroad use. Somehow, telling someone to come ride my Monkey sounds rather naughty. LOL.
Easy tiger!
@@TheMissendenFlyer 🤣🤣🤣
Come on andy it was them GOLD wheels that did it for you 😉.
did mrs flyer take the opertunity for a spin
Sadly the insurance on these press bikes didn't permit it.....
Tough between Monkey and Grom tbh
And next weeks video is….. Lands End to John O’Groats by Grom. 😂
You're confusing me with the big Scottish bearded one (an easy mistake)....
Monkey for 🙊 monkeying around 🤓👍🏻
If the dax had the same clutch n 5 speed it would be a clear winner (why do Honda do weird stuff) also buy a cheap plastic garden shed n put ur mower n garden 🪴 tools in 😂👍
Come on Andy, own up! you picked the Grom because it has gold wheels!!
That may be it subconsciously!
Just brought a Benelli TNT as a toy to play with On the Welsh mountain roads.
Cool!
Totally agree with your choice, the Grom just looks more “grown up”. Nice colour too.
Glad we concur!
No Navis in the UK yet lol
Good. They're garbage
Reminds me of my old Yamaha Chappy.
