Ten Years ago I bought Genghis Tron "Board Up The House" and became a fan. It was like an industrial electronic version of Dillinger Escape Plan. It was intense. When Dream Weapon released, i instantly fell in love with the synthy progish rock sound. The new drummer is sick. The new vocalist appeals to "older me" than the old screamo vocals. The album starts heavy and slowly becomes more relaxed and it kicks. Love it when a band returns older and wiser. The 10 min track "Ritual Circle" is the highlight for me.

The really interesting thing is that Dream Weapon isn't THAT much of a departure. The guitar melody in the chorus is very similar to Board Up the House's title track, but the rest of it is closer to their previous album's final track 'Relief'. I'm sure that's intentional: The guitar is telling you it's the same band, but they're progressing from the _last_ thing you heard from them, not the first.

Board Up The House was sick. "Things Don't Look Good" and "I Won't Come Back Alive" were damn bangers. Haven't listened to the new one yet, but this is really different.

I was a huge fan of their music back in the day and when this new album came out, it caught me completely by surprise. There was such a massive difference in their sound but it was soooo good.
The Feast has a really cool rhythmic riff that I always loved.
Rock Candy was one of my favorites because it was all over the place. Laser Bitch was my favorite to show to my EDM friends 🤣

They have a more "complete' lineup on this comeback album with a new vocalist. Their previous lineup was 3 guys, one guy on guitar, one guy on a big Andromeda keyboard, and a vocalist with additional keys, along with programmed drums (they used the software Drumkit from Hell for realistic sounding drumming). I got into them when their first EP came out, and that thing throws a lot at you in a short amount of time and sounds more playful and less 'serious' than everything they released after it.

Absolutely love this album. Nic, the drummer, really nails it. There's a good podcast with him discussing the recording process of this album. He recorded his parts in Canada without ever actually meeting the other band members. He definitely overdubs on almost every song. He had two kits, one of them set up almost like a timpani rig, to do the awesome tom fills. He said he listened to tons of Phil Collins and Tears for Fears prior to recording. Tony, the vocalist, is one of the founding members of The Armed, another awesome band that does some crazy stuff (experimental hardcore).

Late to the party here, but some really great stuff coming along! This was a PHENOMENAL track, really blew me away!
What I love the most in music like this is the layers and depth that everything comes along from. Just every new measure brings something new from backing guitars, to layered choruses, to ambient background noise, to extra drum fills, to the fucking kitchen sink. Love, love, love it!
You said it before, Geebz, but it's the power of simplicity. Not too difficult for any of the musicians.
This brought a new dimension to "wall of sound" where it doesn't need to get loud and proud, it just wants to be complex, and add on and on and on without becoming muddied but what's tracked before it.
    Freaking amazing song choice here!
Thanks for the vid, Geebz, will absolutely have to hear some more from these guys. Hope they become another new addiction for me!
I'm still here! Keep on rocking!🤘🤙

Incredibly underrated band, and part of that is because the harshness of their early material definitely wasn't everyone's cup of tea. But this departure isn't even really them becoming more "accessible" so much as maintaining the complexity but naturally progressing from the end of their last album. Each release they put out is similar to the previous one, but nothing like the one before it; almost like going halfway into a new style, then next time it's fully into that style and halfway into the next one.

So interesting that you'd pick this band. I have a bit of history with them myself. Their first EP was released in 2005 and I was reviewing music at the time ending me up with a copy - it's a 5 track whirlwind that can't last more than twelve minutes, but that was kind of the point, grindcore never does anything more than it needs to; it ended up being a regular listen for me. So much so, in fact that I remember staying up and refreshing the store page of their label to get the limited print remix EP "Cape of Hate."
At some point I got to talking to Hamilton the guitarist and made friends. Enough so that he shipped me from the US to the UK, a CD-R of what would become their first album, with "do not share" written on it with Sharpie. This was months before the release date, so I consider it an heirloom.
Not long after they played at the Camden Underworld where I got to have a brief chat with everyone.
This video is actually my intro to their new material, so I'm more excited than usual for the Geebz rundown.

Also that triplet dugga da dugga triplet and possibly syncopated beat is what we old heads used to call a breakbeat. And tell me it's not the same. Jsrf-concept of love did it the same way in a eurostyle punk underground metal vibe. The exact beat sped up with effects. Dethklok did the triplet sweeps patterns. Hard to call Dream Weapon a cybergrind album. Their earlier stuff had a lot of elements of metalcore & grindcore weaving in & out of synth pop or industrial rock/metal. When they came back they kinda picked a side and took it in new directions, more electronic rock than crazy experimental metal (certainly not extreme metal like grindcore).
One of the album descriptions I read said it "picks up where Board Up the House left off" but it really doesnt, it picks up where half of it left off and pretty much abandons the more aggro punk/metal side for a more relaxed synth/prog thing. It's like punk vs. post-punk or something, you might call it post-cybergrind lmao. It's still really good but in a different way.
If you wanna see what I mean check out songs from their earlier records like Laser Bitch or The Folding Road, or something from their last album way back in 2008 like Endless Teeth or Things Dont Look Good. The differences are immediately apparent, and the direction they decided to go is also apparent in the tracks and passages that arent especially metalcore-inflected. Can't say I dont miss the heavier stuff. They sorta found a middleground but the dynamics between the light and the heavy were pretty enjoyable.

I love Genghis Tron, but the newer stuff is waaaaaay different than previous albums. check out a track like The Folding Road for comparison. chaotic electro tech-metal that's absolutely brutal in comparison to this which is a little more progressive and dreamy.

Board Up the House was a game changer for me, such a uniquely brilliant album. Love this song but am yet to hear the album, time to rectify that!
Another cyber grind band is Gigantic Brain, some interesting songs to be found.

Hi Geebz, I’m still here. I’ve never heard these guys before and I thought it was great. I think the last two min. of the song seemed like a tremendous build up. I’m still trying to figure out music theory but did they every really go to the “home” note in the last two min? I thought I heard the vocal hit it once but maybe I was just looking for it. Thanks 😀

They were on hiatus for a long time. I stumbled across their return when I wanted to go back to Board Up the House for the first time in ages. This song IMMEDIATELY grabbed me. So good.

Their first two albums were absolute bangers. I can't remember the name of the first one but I believe it had a coffin on it. EDIT: It was Cloak Of Love: Board Up the House though is just a huge game changer. When "The Whips Blow Back" hit after "City On A Hill" It's just the best.
I was lucky to find these guys around 2004 and see them live with Baroness and The Red Chord at Iowa City around 2006 or 07?
    I love 'em.

I loved Genghis when they were cybergrind but this album is a masterpiece. It's metal but it's also an art piece.

    Glad no mold.
It's hard to hear over the drums kinda, like they're too far in the front of the mix... maybe it is just me. Don't know why but im getting smashing pumpkins vibes. Good work/study music. I'm still here.
It's my b-day at the start of october and may i humbly suggest kevin sherwood - Drowning. I know you'll love this song because of its sound engineering, funky bass and a sick solo. I'd rather suggest Pareidolia because that song means more to me but Drowning has WAY better sound engineering (because its newer). It is basically one guy who writes/plays the music/ lyrics who has a guest singer (Malukah for this) along with one other guy scott eckert that does the sound engineering/mixing.... that's it. I know you got a ton of songs on your list be i thought I'd at least put this out in the Aether.
