It had the impossible job of following up The Fragile so there's no way that it could have ever met people's expectations at the time. I agree, it's a great record.

I agree, it's a great album but not really that underrated. It got good reviews but wasn't as ground breaking as the fragile or earlier stuff.
I'm not a hardcore NIN fan but to me the most underrated album is Hesitation Marks. Some great songs on there even though it's nothing like the old stuff.

Whilst “[With Teeth]” isn’t my favourite NIN record it has some of my favourite songs from them and “Beside you in time” is absolutely amazing in how it starts off as a bit repetitive then just unleashes into this absolute beast of a song near the end and every time I listen too it, I just get hyped so much by the drums.

I remember interviews saying he literally used all 64 tracks available (that was a new thing at the time) on some Downward Spiral songs. Just mics left open in the Manson house picking up creepy noise, wind, road noise from the highway, random distortion and bleed-throughs, layered and layered. I think of that album as Trent's "Dark Side of the Moon", just experimenting with the newest available technology, then "The Fragile" was his "The Wall" (Bob Ezrin-produced, of course).
"Pretty Hate Machine" seems so bare-bones next to those. "Broken" seemed like he was just figuring out how to better capture more live instruments, then "Fixed" was him tearing "Broken" apart with new technology on his own.
I miss great concept albums in rock being a regular thing. Kind of the main drawback to new listeners, I think, is not experiencing full albums when every song was specifically designed to enhance every other part of the album. The way "Antichrist Superstar" has some great singles, but taken as a whole is a total Bowie-esque "rock opera".

@@SamantherPanther I actually looked it up again (20 year old memories aren't so reliable), and I should've said Sharon Tate's house, called Le Pig Studio. Some of MM's "Portrait of an American Family" was recorded there too.
Trent said he didn't put much thought into it and none of the "Pig" lyrics had anything to do with the location, it was just a cheap place to rent, due to the bad history. Sharon Tate's sister accused him of glorifying the murders, and he became severely depressed thinking "Is that what people think I'm about?" He took the front door when he left, and put it on his own Nothing studio. Sort of a fucked up memento of misconception.

Together with Atticus, he has scored quite a few movies and documentaries lately (last 10 years or so)...."Social Network", "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo", "Soul" and many others. I remember very clearly when this came out, because I was a teenager who grew up in a very staid and religious household, and this music was cathartic for me. I found my own voice academically and philosophically during this time, and this music gave me a way to “act out” my anger and big emotions, which were not acceptable in my parent’s house. This is the music that kept me alive as a teenager. 💖

Love your breakdowns! NIN music is the whole universe in itself, just like Tool. Trent started in the industry with NIN, but already in the mid-90's he was involved in the movies (the song Burn for Natural Born Killers, for example, and then Lost Highway. David Lynch and Reznor are good friends). From the very beginning with NIN, he was taking that metal approach and combine it with experimental electronic sounds, which was quite unique thing in the Grunge years, and after that his music was constantly changing and evolving. When I was a teenager, NIN was my absolute faforite band, because it opened the whole new musical doors for me, I was amazed by them and how unusual this music was. and I'm still amazed by Trent's genius and what he's doing to this day.
I strongly suggest to listen to these two albums: The Downward Spiral (1994) and The Fragile (1999). NIN is soooo much more when you listen to the whole story told in the album. These two are Reznor's magnum opuses, and like you said, they are cutting edge masterpieces, with all these complex layers of sound and everything.
I'd be very interested to see you breakdown some of the songs from these albums! For example, Just Like You Imagined, which has mindblowing performance by David Bowie's pianist Mike Garson, or The Great Below.

NIN / Trent Reznor provide so much to learn about music and how to put songs together. He's a genius with this stuff and I've been listening since the Downward Spiral for that very reason. One of my all time favorite albums from start to finish is The Fragile, it's a double album and the entire thing is an experience!

This song spoke to me when I was working at a national insurance company, stuck in a half-cubicle day in and day out. The job eventually took me to a really dark place but this song kind of conveys the darkness inherent in stagnation and repetition. I like the analysis pointing out the repetition of the arrangement.
Also, obligatory request for Starset. "Ricochet" preferred, but any of their songs will do. Their breakout song was "My Demons".

My son turned me on to NIN in the 1990s they can switch things around so amazingly. Check out “A minute to Breathe” Video & Lyrics. Trent is pretty amazing. I think “Good Soldier” really speaks to the 20 year war lyrics. Another good album is Fragile. Have fun!
