1992 Porsche 964 Carrera RS: Rituals of Rennsport

  • The power of Porsche is rarely measured on a dyno, but you can always tell when it’s taken hold of someone. Eli Kogan is certainly no stranger to the marque from Stuttgart, and today we’re joining him for a spirited run through the gears in the type of empty space in the Arizona desert that almost audibly eggs on right feet. In between heel-and-toes and counter-steering his Maritime Blue 964 RS (it’s not an RS America either, despite the US plates), he explains the reasoning behind his Porsche infatuation-from the first triple-digit speed run in the passenger seat of his dad’s 993, to the race-derived nature of the legendary RS line, but we’ll shut up now and let him and the flat-six do the talking.

My 2 cents: I think it's a very good film about the 92 RS, I also think it is a special car, but I am 100% sure you can modify a C2 to get basically an RS. Ditch the sunroof, mod the G50, take all interior out, reinforce couple welds, put in Carrera RS lightweight carpet and RS doorcards,, ditch the steering assist, change for bilsteins and let them be adjusted to RS spec, add an original Tequipment front strut brace, change rear bumper, put in Pole positions, ditch the front carpet, buy an RS programmed EEPROM for the motronic, ditch the A/C, replace the glass with lexan, put in a lightweight FW and clutch, replace rear engine mounts, give your 7 & 8s Cup1s 225Fr/255rear and an RS alignment, optional: put on big reds (although original 4 pots fr/rear should really be fine with good pads). Now you have 99% of an RS and it costs a third at most. I don't know how one can say an RS is so much different from a base C2 when it's almost the same car other than been very biased.

@@carsmedic true automotive enthusiasts will do whatever the fuck they want and please with THEIR car. I mean. Can you really enjoy the car if you are just worried about the value? There are individuals at festivals like Goodwood who throw these so called priceless cars as if they were in their hey-day. Your opinion of whether or not they ruin the car does not matter and you are really just a dick. However, I'm not an animal. Excerpt for a few of the uber-expensive 964 variants like the Leichtbau, Turbo 3.6 Flachbau, etc IMHO this is the epitome of 964's. Thanks Eli for sharing your gorgeous car!!! Also be aware there are no bump stops on the rear torsion arms so if a shock bolt breaks ( mine did ) you will be 3 wheeling down the road...

Nice. I don't mind a regular C2, but due to certain artificial "taxes" placed on theses air-cooled cars, I'll probably never own one. The way he describes the RS reminds me a lot like how Subaru engineers designed the BRZ. Maximizing this, minimizing that, adjusting things to the mm for the right balance, etc., etc. almost solidifies some pretty good arguments why I should buy a BRZ over other cars on my very short list. Analog driving experiences are almost non-existent, so the BRZ, and Miata for that matter, are two modern cars available today that replicate the analog experience. Cheers.

Beautiful car Nice to see it being driven since most are sitting in collections. I vaguely remember this one in either BC or Alberta Canada. A local dealer/speculator already bought and sold a rubystone and a polar silver 964 RS. The 90 c2 Baltic blue on blue I drove was a wonderful car. I can only imagine what the RS is like. Very special.

I'm 27 and I really miss the days of real mechanical cars not contaminated by electronic gimmicks that breakdown all the time. Simple, reliable, easy to maintain and a joy to drive.

Great car, great video. This guy gets it... this car, driving and what it means to be a car enthusiast. Though I am a bit surprised that the Porsche engineers decided to retain the bottle of water and Altoids in the RS.

Great video with fantastic visuals. A small tip for the owner, don't keep switching the car off via the kill switch. Each time you do that you clear the adaption values in the ecu and you'll find it will stall when cold a lot more. It's a lovely car enjoy.

Actually the 1992 964 US Cup was a USA street legal 964 RS. They imported about 45 of them for a race series that never happened. Very cool car. I owned and raced #21, an Andial car, for a couple of years in PCA.

To drive a Porsche on a road like this is really the icing on the cake, Where was this video made? I live in South Florida and don't have roads like that to drive my 911. I guess having the car without the road makes a big difference in the total experience. Great video and car! As always another great video. Thanks.

I came here for the car, not the owner. I try not to be judgemental, he could easily just have bought a Bentley or whatever. But the got the RS, and he drives it and shares it on UA-cam, I respect that. I’m never gonna meet him and talk to him anyway, so why care what he’s like? Are we really wanting to direct who gets what car?
