- In this video I am visiting REL Acoustics on my way to complete a Dirac Live calibration because I wanted to see and hear for myself the new No.31 and No.32 reference subwoofers that have just been released. What a treat to be the first person in the UK and one of the first in the World to get to see them.
The No.32 is the new flagship subwoofer but very close to it is the No.31 being designed for smaller rooms.
For more details about the No.32 see here rel.net/shop/powered-subwoofe...
For more details about the No.31 see here rel.net/shop/powered-subwoofe...

Thanks for watching the video, In case you havent seen it I also visited REL last year to learn about using High level for a home theatre system link here if you would like to watch it ua-cam.com/video/vG6kcWjiIjg/v-deo.html
Is there a reason no one is producing a 3D printed speaker box? From what I understand you can produce far more rigid structures using 3D printing methods.
Thanks so much for this very thorough story on these amazing looking RELs ! Real eye candy and ear candy as well. I have an S/510 - no slouch I can assure you but given the funds, I'd sure would opt for one of THESE! Cheers from Canada and happy listening to all!
Absolutely Terry I would love to see you put these subs through their paces, and I know there's no better qualified man to do that then you.
I have the G2. It is powered by a Class AB amplifier with mosfet transistors. This matches my power amp (Pass) that also has mosfet transistors. This sort of matching helps the integration of the sound.
The high level inputs are optional, but if your power amp is different from your pre-amp then (eg solid state pre and valve power) then the high level input is fantastic to again achieve integration ie your sub is getting the same signal as your speakers.
Another under appreciated point: If your speakers are ported then get a ported sub. If your speakers are a closed design, then get a closed sub.
But wait! there is more! If you can match the cone material of your drivers - speakers and sub - then again this assists in the integration of the sound.
My big shoutout to REL is their advice on placement. I obsessed on all the (well meaning and good) advice on placement. So many tips and tricks. REL said : plonk it in a corner so that it faces the longest dimension of the room. I did that, experimented a bit with angle, back and forward a few inches here and there, experimented with the phase. Experimented with volume and crossover. I kid you not: within 20 minutes - TWENTY MINUTES - it was dialled in.
REL talk the talk as do many other brands but on my first REL, and in my system, they walk the walk.
Good to see REL have chilled out in the stickers / logos department lol 😆
Props to those who buy these things and make sure the next generation of awesome tech gets made. In law has 2 REL beasts (G1) that he paid 9k for about 10 years ago. We have lengthy discussions comparing it to my (single sub) DIY job that cost less than 1k to make and the general conclusion is, better than one, worse than 2. But a shape, let alone a finish like that are beyond what's attainable in a garage, so there's that. To me this looks like (in GBP):
Driver 700
Cabinet building 500
Amp and electronics 800
Finish 1500
R&D, marketing, overhead 1500
Shipping 300
Service/warranty 500
Profit 2500
VAT 1700
Actually, reasonable pricing, even more so if you consider the profit has to be split with importers and retail.
Wonderful thanks for that video Terry! Great to see those subwoofers in the flesh and how massive they are. I will be eagerly waiting for you to review them in the near future hopefully. Your opinion is especially valuable in the frame of a hi-fi usage. I’m sure I’m not the only one wondering what a REL subwoofer like this could bring to my system. I would really really love to hear an a/b demo with and without subwoofer in your system, fingers crossed!
Great job Terry, REL can only be advantaged by allowing you to review these subs.
Yes, please do the review.
Would love to see you review the number 31 subs!
Yes, Terry. Looking forward to 31/32 review
Yeah wont be a 32 thats too big, 31's are on the limit.
Of course we want to see a full review of the 31s!
Oh heck yeah dude. I’m particularly excited by those remote controls! It would be so cool if REL gave those to the subs lower in the lineup
Review this! Especially the No. 31! This will give us a perspective in a normal apartment situation 👍🏼👍🏼
Yes, please review these!
Yes, PLEASE review the No. 31's!
What beasts! Of course we would love you to review a pair of these absolute units 😆
Review - yes please 🤩
I've bought a REL Carbon Special to match my Vivid Giya 2. There's no return, after I put that in. Bravo.
Yes we want a review!!!
Yes review and demo please
Absolutely review them Terry, when I'm ready to trade in my pair of S3 /SHO's it will probably be for a single 31
I would absolutely be interested in you reviewing these
I would love to see you review the Rel no.31!
Look awesome. Hope REL send you a pair for review
Thanks Terry, nice to see REL doing well and honouring its founder. I bought the 1st original REL Stygian from Richard E Lord himself when his testing office was a portacabin in his back garden, also in Bridgend.
In those days he had also built a substantial subwoofer into a window seat in his lounge. There was an article about him in HIFI news at the time.
Yess. We need a review sir
Yes!
Yes, please review the sub. I have the S/812. This should take it to another level.
Another vote for a review of a pair of 31s. Would be a fun listen with the Mission 770 although it's crazy to think that the price of the 2 subs would be many times over the speakers price.
I’d be glad to add my voice to these others in requesting a review of the 31’s. REL is on my list of subs for my upcoming home theater/media room
Yes Tel.... Def a pair of the No. 31 at yours.... May I make the suggestion that you save on the return carriage... Just stump up the readies and keep em!... They'll blend seemlessly with pretty much all that you're Likely to couple them to....... C'mon You KNOW I'm right on this. 👍🏻
100% I would love to have them here but might need a few more Patreon supporters at the mo to raise the readies
Wow, what amazing pieces of kit, REL are clearly onto a winner with the 31 & 32 subwoofers. You must audition the 31's...be careful though I don't think you'll want to give them back!
Terry should definitely do so!
Thanks for this preview, REL are always the very best musical subwoofer on the market. I'd love you to fully review the No. 32 (or 31 in your environment), so please REL, allow the best english reviewer to put his hands on your awesome products. ;)
Wow thanks Alberto, appreciate it
I have just enough in savings to buy a pair or these monster subs, however I think my neighbour would dislike the bass and complain. I currently have a pair of Tannoy XT8F's in my house extension which is built on the gable end of my semi-detached house well away from the party wall. Despite this my neighbour complained when I played them loud with about 25 Watts per channel. I remember her saying that her whole house is shaking. Now if small Tannoy's can do that what would happen if I bought two of these subs? Thanks Terry for another superb video.
You would need to live on a remote island to play them
Jim, you need to buy the 2 subs and let us know how it goes with your neighbour!
@@ianstyring9602 yes we need to know what happens to the neighbors with the two subwoofers
@@qevoh hahaha 😂 i agree
Cannot imagine how powerful these 2 subs are….i own the T7i & they can sometimes rattle my kitchen cabinet already. But more than just bass output, i sm sure the bass is subtle, textured & above all musical as with all REL subs.
The T7s are getting up there right? Do you mind me asking what your power amp and speakers are?
Yes please, would love to hear your thoughts between the two REL subwoofers in your room.
The No. 32 is a MASSIVE SUBWOOFER!!!!!!! I'm still enjoying my REL Q108E! Please review the No. 31!!!
Review - yes! Be interesting to compare a single 31 (being within range of more folk) to a pair of 'lesser' Rel's at same cost.
That would work as well Rob but you cant blame a man for being ambitious :)
Yeah please review them
YES!!! We want you to test the new monster Rel subs :-)
YES.
Wish they had a utilitarian version of subs like this. Same dimensions but without fancy shiny coating and grill. Just unpainted plain Jane with appropriate price reduction.
They are beautiful to look at though. Well done
O yeah, please do review the 31’s
Great intro and hope you get to review either the No.32 OR No.31 or both. I use the G1-MarkII (Pair) and am keen to learn what more can I get from upgrading to the No.31 (Pair).
Great video as always Terry. 👍
Try your best Jedi voice on them once you have a six-pack of the No.31s in the van..."These are not the subs your looking for!" 😁
REL, please loan Terry some No.31s.
You know you've got to Terry, they have to lend you a pair!
I would definitely like for you to review a pair of REL No31 subwoofers
I wonder how much more nimble they are (i.e. how much faster they come to rest after a transient) compared to the S510s? Great fun finding out😉
Aww they certainly look gorgeous and just like the rest of the Rel subs they're probably gonna sound gorgeous! But the question is, will we get to hear it... well you can put my name down for it! 👍
I must admit listening to you while looking at those subs was getting me a little excited but when I heard the "meh" bloomer sound... I thought oh my god this video has got the full package 😁
Yes he should
Hi Terry, please do review these beauties 😊
I have 2 on order and am excited that you got the chance to experience them. I would be very interested in how you like them in your system especially if you try them in the theater space or even running with 3D base which is my current plan. Love the video as always.
Wow 2 on order nice one
Wow a pair of 31s and in a REL 3D setup! You are a lucky man. Which RELs do you plan on running with the pair of 31s in a 3D setup?
when are you getting the other four? If you're going to do it, do it right. Go big or go home :)
31's for Terry Rel!
James
Beautiful Monsters!!!! I am going to keep it sensible though, and keep using my two "tiny" T/5x Subs. Exciting announcement, Terry. NICE JOB!
Sensible but still excellent
I’d love to see a review on the number 31, be good to know whether one of them does enough of a job to warrant only buying one, or if 2 really makes the difference.
One is often enough for output but 2 subs always has the edge probably because of the technicals of having dual sources of bass in the room
I vote for a review
Review 👍
I just took delivery of my 1205 yesterday im very impressed with the sound i love my purchase expecialy the price i paid i got it on sale for £449 amazing, but you go on and on about how fantatiscly well made they are contantly but a small thing like on mine the amp is not flush all the way round top and bottom are fine but there are big parts of the sides that stick up you can feel it with your finger and its not tiny amount, just saying they not as perfect as you make out. quality control could be better, i think thats something that could be done right everytime.
The 1205 at £449 is a little bit different to these subs at £7000/£10000 for build quality as you would expect.
Thanks for the great review Terry. In your opinion would it be a "worthwhile" consideration to actually upgrade from my current pair of REL 212/SXs to the No.35s? Apart from parting with more big $$$ will I experience diminishing returns or achieve pure bliss and low cycle ecstacy? The world of modern subwoofers are beyond incredible.
I cant answer that sorry
I want to see a review of these...double preferably
Love your enthusiasm Terry! Great video, certainly gets me excited! P.S how about a shootout against one of the Large JL Audio subs.
Given the technology on display I'd be curious to hear this REL subwoofer against the Perlisten Audio D15s or the bigger brother D215s.
Or Jl f113v2
Interesting that REL use Dynaudio. I use them, and have heard Evokes - they chuck out a LOT of bass on thier own!
Hi Terry, would love a review of these.
Definitely get a - pair ? - for review from rel if possible
Terry, I would love to see you review the number 31 REL subwoofer. Does the REL also have a LFE output. I’m wondering if you are able to compare LFE to the high level input widely praised of REL; maybe you already have a video on this. It’s also interesting how RF signals are used to shape the MDF wood, it’s interesting to hear about this.
Yeah they have an LFE input too yes on all their subs, high level is not on the REL subs designed for home cinema
REL headquarters looks like a mobile home. Was not expecting that.
Its an old bomb factory and its where REL started. They dont manufacture there anymore.
Six Pack, Six Pack! Review the six pack of these beautys 🤣✌🏽
Terri, you must review these…REL, if you are listening- send Terri a pair for review!
How would these compare to say, a Paradigm Sub 1 or Sub 2?
Great video as always!
Great video. Subsonic…. Did you get a lot of umpf?
Terry should review them, AND keep them...
Hey REL please let Terry audition these magnificent subwoofers at his place of residence. I would love to hear his audiophile opinion of these awesome subs. No. 32 & No.31 Thanks!
There might be somhhting planned stay tuned ;)
Wish i could afford it , nice .
I wish I could afford the electric to power it 😪
Yeah we have all got that coming Mark
Hi Terry, do you know of Rel have any plans for a 10” version? I’m sure there would be a lot of interest.
Could you mix and match the 31/32 in a 6-pack configuration ie a 32 paired with 2 x 31's per side ?
One thing what bothers me ... on their S/T/HT ranges Rel says "we don't use compensation functionality because it's bad and our subs don't need it."
BUT on their Reference series ... they HAVE compensation functionality ... analog, but it's there.
So going to buy Arendal subs next time 🙂 See how they do.
£7000 for the Rel 31. £10,000 for the 32.
For reference, you can buy used high quality 18" woofers for £250ish per channel.
One thing with large woofers is that you can have either high efficiency with so so bass extension or lower efficiency and more bass extension. For movies, bass extension is the way to go. For music, my thoughts at the moment are that high efficiency is a good route.
The 12" and 15" Rels will be using a lot of built in equalisation to get down to 20 hz.
I prefer to have a woofer solution where I can't see the woofers moving - for the cleanest most dynamic sound. Which will all depend on the frequency, volume, and total size of all woofers.
That means a huge box though Lindsay, especially for 18's
@@PursuitPerfectSystem The REL 32's come in 29" wide by 32" deep cabinets. An 18" woofer could be housed properly in a narrower, taller, less deep cabinet. 20" to 21" wide and 17" deep should be fine. Such a solution would be narrower and less deep than the REL 31's.
A bespoke or DIY 18" woofer cabinet could be used as the stand for the upper bass, midrange and treble drivers to help with the amount of floor-space used up.
The REL reference woofers are stocky to allow them to be stacked. But how many woofers do you need? Even in a barn sized room, a stereo pair of 18" drivers should be overkill for pressurising the room.
So REL use DSP on 32 and 31?
Where can i get info about that?
High Quality 18” for 250punds?
Don’t write Dayton Audio for love of god 😅😂
I have the older G1 subs , which are great, but I am interested in you reviewing both the 31 and the 32's . I have Martin Logan's Art speakers and need a extremely fast responsive contolled and expressly deep bassed subs, to supplement my large electrostatic speakers.
DEC
100% you should review no32 and in a dream world, you could do a Vs perlisten d215 I think there around £8500 (basically the same) A channel of your level, this challenge shouldn't be a problem???. Lol
Ideal for apartment in 4th floor block :DDDD
Yeah 2 of the big ones in there :)
Wish they'd shown the 32 in an array can you imagine a 6 pack of these bad boys
I dont think there is enough available to do that, this is so brand new I think I saw pretty much the first two in the UK
Have you heard the Perlisten D215s or D212s? How would you compare with the Rel 32/31?
Not yet no, I know they exist though, one of them is huge 100kg
Should I consider a pair of n°31 or a 6 pack of S510? I'd be happy to get a hint of an answer... :)
Great question and one I cant answer, but would love to know the answer. I have a feeling the dual no.31 would be the better option but I dont know, maybe contact REL and ask them
get a couple purchased terry and then tell us all. see if it keeps up with my svs 16 ultra's
If only it were that simple.... :)
REL: Really Expensive Loudness
What exactly was the sheep noise for????
I said the wrong thing, so had to bleep it out. Sorry the sheep noise was an "in-joke". I hope it wasn't offensive, I thought a few people would get it, most wouldn't
As an audiophile worshipper what would be a better option.
One No 31 or 2 Rel Carbons.
what is the Fink track / album you refer to? i need to check it out
cant remember which track but its the live album I put a link to it in the video description
Great content and please review the sub Also does the REL work well with my Wilson Audio TuneTot speakers in a medium sized room?
Thanks Yeah they will work with any speakers inc actives
Thanks - I meant REL 32 subwoofer?
But are they really better than my T/9i??
I live in the US and my local REL dealer tells me I have the first "full" No.32 6-pack in the country arriving next week-finally replacing my old G1 MkII 6-pack...So if the Earth shifts off it's axis in the next 10 days, my bad!😁
wow nice
Would be good to know how you are getting on with your new 6pack compare to older G1! Was it worth the upgrade!
👍👍👍
Yes please! End game subs for sure 😃
How would these compare to a dual 15" subwoofer with 1800w of amplification for $3000 from Rythmik?
Seems like the fanciness is what you're paying for with REL and they are relatively bass-lite for the size and cost.
Rythmik all day ! I have 2 f18s and they go down to single digits they might not look as nice as rels but they are incredible for the price
@@chrisrichardson958
Subwoofers is only a numbers game 🙄
10 gs?! No problem I'll take 6 of them lol
My whole system and all that’s in my living room, including windows and the paint on the walls is less than 10k pounds.
I wouldn't waste my money on a REL. I'd rather use an ATC SCM ASL low frequency sub that they use in the top recording studios.
I gather you've placed your order for a 6 pack number 32?? 🙂
I think I know someone who has so might get a chance to have a listen, fingers crossed
What do you mean with "quicker"?
resolves more information in the bass rather than it just being pressure
@@PursuitPerfectSystem do you have any articles or papers about this topic?
The articles I have written are on my website www.pursuitperfectsystem.com/articles/
