An episode of The Whisk(e)y Vault hosted at Whisky Marketing School in Austin, TX. Today we talk about Talisker 10 year old from the Talisker Distillery.
Sorry to be so off topic but does someone know of a trick to get back into an instagram account..? I was dumb lost the password. I would appreciate any help you can offer me
@Kaiser James I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm in the hacking process now. I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
Just bought one two days ago in Ireland, Its half empty, and I have no idea what happened, but I have come across few whiskey's that make me smile, literally smile just smelling it. Maybe Redbreast 26.
"Become indispensable" this is solid advice for any career. Find a task that no one else can do, and figure out how to do it and you will always have a job.
As a noob myself, I really appreciate these very thorough reviews. Just got this after watching this review. I think I will keep and share rather than give as a gift. Excited to try.
Drinking and appreciating talisker is one of the many advantages to living in Scotland. I've even been to the talisker distillery one of the best days of my life.
I just got a bottle of this as a gift, it's my first smokey sort of scotch and I am blown away! I love how much it evolves with each sip. Trying to savor it slowly...lol
These two gentlemen are the kinda guys you really wanna meet at a bar. I'm glad you did this review because although I've always said that Glenfiddich 12 was my go-to whiskey, I tried Talisker 10 for the first time on the Jazz boat in Prague about 4 years ago and I've never touched Glenfiddich since. This, is an exceptional Whiskey.
I've been wanting to try Talisker 10 year, but in my area it runs roughly $85-$90 a bottle at any given store. Then today I walked into the local grocery store and they had it in the clearance cart for $35 because they couldn't sell it... By the way, love it so I am going to buy the rest of their stock.
Absolutely! I’d recommend, if you’re looking for good quality whisky or scotch and want to get a value on the price point to check out small local and or family run liquor stores- up here in Boston we have little corner store liquor stores that don’t always move a lot of the products so they sit on shelves and get discounted over time and they don’t always know the worth of a bottle. Last week I was able to snag a bottle of Laphorig 16 for under $45 which is a steal up here.
I was looking at talisker 10 and Cardu 12 today , both on sale, so I looked up your reviews. Talisker 10 is just incredible. Thanks for putting this stuff up.
Bought the Talisker Storm for my dad as an early Father's Day present after watching your series and he loves it! It was the first Talisker for either of us and the smokiness in this particular scotch is really different from what we had experienced before. Neither of us knows very much about whiskeys but I'm glad I stumbled on this channel and can't wait to experiment with other varieties as I learn from UA-cam's best. Keep up the great work!
Great review guys! Completely agree with the Bunna 12yo comment as the first step into Islay after the influenced blends. Totally love the Talisker 10yo. To me it represents everything that's good about whisky, with maturity, complexity, flavour and craft. In fact, if I don't drink some now I'm going to cry!
Talisker 10 changed my life. The best way I try to describe it to friends, is if you like a nice smokey Miso Soup, you'll love Talisker. Miso Soup is the closest thing I can come up with to describe the experience. It's very savory, makes you forget your drinking alcohol. You will not want to add ice, instead you'll have this knee jerk reaction that you want it to warm it up like your sipping a smoked oyster broth.
@@doc8125 These island scotches are VERY peaty and salty, so they tend to not do well in mixers. They are wonderful just as "neat" sippers though. Plus, that would a very expensive hot toddy lol. I'm not disparaging anybody's preferences. Just saying, if you are going to mix it in a cocktail anyway, might as well save some money and go towards something like Johnny Walker. But, if you have money to burn, give it a go and let us know how it turned out!! :)
@@mjmorden funny thing is ... this is considered "cheap" in Norway, or at least low mid end. Like it costs 50 bucks yes, but when the cheapest Islay costs 40 here (MacLeods Islay Single Malt Whisky) 50 is not really that much of a stepup.
@@mjmorden and a bottle of Johnnie Walker red lable is freakings over 35 dollars, no way in hell I am getting that when I could rather get something like laphroige or talisker for around 50
and I dont agree that peaty and salty whisky does not work well in cocktails, as long as its a cocktail thats very whisky forward, like a hot toddy is just whisky watered down with hot water and maybe some optional lemmon or honey/sugar
spot on about just showing up and doing the shit other people dont wnna do, that is every job in the world, even just showing up to a bball game for the first time and playing defense and getting rebounds, doing the gritty stuff gets you that respect.
Exactly! Have to disagree with them. No need to pass by other whiskies to reach the islay/smoked ones. Just go for it and see if you like (you'll probably do btw).
My first introduction to Islay whiskey was Bowmore 12. I was pleasantly surprised by the smell, but what fascinated me was the sweetness right behind the smoke that was smooth and seemed to linger. My friends, who are not whiskey drinkers, thought I was crazy drinking something that smelled like a campfire and were hesitant to even consider tasting it.
My first peated scotch was Ardbeg 10. I couldn't stand it the first time I tried it but I came back a couple nights later and fell in love with it. I'm trying Talisker 10 for the first time right now and it's fantastic. It's well balanced and I'm glad I picked up a bottle of it.
Iodine, iodine, iodine! God I love Talisker! It’s like sitting on the coast next to a fire on a cold night, and the salt spray hitting you in the face! Also I don’t like adding water, it pushes something out that I can’t quite put my finger on, but I know I miss it!
I absolutely love this whisky. Complex, but not overwhelming, just like you said. With a nice oily texture to it. mild on the brine and saltiness. Much easier to drink than say Laphroig. I would recommend Highland Park or Ledaig before jumping into this. I haven't tried it for a long time, but maybe one level up in the smokey/oily/complex is Lagavulin.
I love Islay whiskey as a category. I fell in love with Talisker 10 as an individual! Holy hell. My first time with it gave me smoked cheesecake somehow. I don’t even remember what I’d had prior to it to set up that profile, but I was balls deep in love. I’m working on building my catalog of whiskey that’s wort sipping and this will soon be on the bar.
Recently added Talisker 10 to my collection. LOVE IT! Highland Park 12 was my “gateway” to Islay scotch. Love that one also! Still working on Ardbeg 10. 🙄 I can’t buy Bunnahabhain 12 locally but look forward to trying it some day.
very good advice on how to get to any industry :) ! also few days ago, we went on hunt to buy some whiskey to celebrate. there were aberlour 12 and talisker 10. looking at the colour and age of aberlour we took that one. but that was more of ladies drinking thing, and if you like smoke and bit less sugar, than aberlour was reminding me some rum and bit of bourbon. I really need to try this one since I can do ardbeg, kilchoman etc
Highland Park Viking Honour (the one in the fancy glass botle) is Highland Park 12 years old, not sure if you guys read these anymore, but it is probably the most common whisky in Norway 😀 and its the best every day whisky i drink.
They say it's not an entry level scotch but honestly got into scotch because of this bottle. Really enjoy the fruity notes with the strong smoke. I even think it's quite a smooth whisky...
I'm busy doing research for World Class 2022, with Regional Finals coming up, and I couldn't help but laugh at your description of James Bond's Shaken, Vodka Martini, because that is EXACTLY WHAT IT TASTES LIKE. hahaha, thank you for that!
I just bought the Talisker 10 and put it on the shelf, started with some other whiskies having some hard cheese on the side while eyeballing the new addition to my collection, then, after about an hour........ I opened, poured, swirled, nosed.... I's like seeing color TV for the first time, the aroma is so much more than even blended whiskies! Whoao! Ok, let's taste................ double whoao.... ! Ok, in short, whatever I paid, if it was double that, still a bargain! It is strong flavoured, but not overbearing, you'll notice immediately it has class, and it lingers..... I had it neat, few drops of filtered water and on clear ice.... like it in all three ways, paired with strongly flavoured soft, medium and hard cheese cuttings, with medium rare steak with some blues music in the background, all in all, a wonderful event!
In my opinion: The best way to introduce yourself to smoke is to go all the way. I went from an aberfeldy 12 which has 0 smoke as my first decent scotch and then I bought a small sample bottle of laphroaig 10. I absolutely loved it.. been a peat lover ever since
I watched Ralfy's re-review of the Talisker 10 before watching this, and I'm so relieved that he must have just got a bad bottle. I agree with your notes, completely. This has all the aspects that I love most about JW Black, but with more smoke, and it fits into itself a bit better. JWB is kind of all over the place, by comparison. The Talisker 10 has depth and complexity, but it's also more focused. I did prefer with a tiny bit of water, because I like earthy, vegetal smells.
I'm a huge fan of Talisker 10. It's in my top 3 (Laphroaig 10, Port Charlotte 10 and Talisker 10) but it is the most variable of the three. Some less than great bottles do make their way out of there. Also it changes dramatically even from glass to glass from the same bottle. The first pour I ever had was one of the greatest experiences I've ever had with a whisky. A few days later I poured another glass from the same bottle and it was nothing but sulfur and brine. Pretty much undrinkable. What I have found (and yes I know this sounds crazy) is to give the bottle a bit of a shake before pouring. A little agitation seems to bring out the fruit notes I love so much. I'm drinking a glass now from a shaken bottle and it's wonderful.
If ever there was a time to do a STD style marathon episode for a single whisky, this would be the one. Talisker is of epicness that should exist in anyone's shelf who has decent experience in scotch. It could be said that Talisker is the scotchiest scotch. It's got it all.
Nice video guys! What do you think about comparing of "arch-rivals"? Laphroaig 10 vs Ardbeg 10 vs Lagavulin 16 might be interesting. Alternatively, glenfiddich vs balvenie, as closely related distilleries? Best.
Hmmm. Love it. There was a funny story told to me once about how a rep from some Highland Distillery brought a boat full of Highland whisky to the Islay Whisky Festival. Almost started a war ;-)
I've done this comparison... it went like this (and I love peated Scotches): Ardbeg 10, 1st (the richest and most complex, good nose, dark and earthy on pallet with a nice long finish), Laphroaig 10, 2nd (a nice punch in the face of bright peat both on the nose and pallet, great price point as well, about $10-$15 cheaper than the Ardbeg, just not as rich and complex), Lagavulin 16, 3rd ( good nose with some decent smokiness, but on the pallet just very one dimensional, no peaty punch to it and just kind of blah, and considering on average it's $25 more than the Ardbeg and $35-$40 more than the Laphroaig I'll never buy another bottle of Lagavulin 16... It's just a bunch of "Ron Swanson" hype IMO... a "peated" scotch for those who can't handle or don't really like the PEAT but want to be part of that club...
for my first smokey whiskey. I went straight for ardbeg 10 and laphroaig 10.. I fell inlove .. now after watching this Talisker episode i am afraid it is going to be a love triangle... thank you for this fun review
I would also not recommend Talisker as an entry level whisky. It was my very first whisky though. Months later came Laphroaig 10. And yet a little later came Lagavulin 16. Only after that did I start trying less smoky or non-smoky whiskies. Not the best idea in retrospect, but I did get hooked and to no small parts by the Talisker. It still has a very special place in my heart. Laphroaig 10 on the other hand I don't like anymore. I would find it difficult to recommend an entry level smoky whisky to be honest. Starting with smoky blends seems like a good idea. If it had to be single malt, I'd probably say Highland Park 12. The best idea (imo) is still to ask someone with a larger whisky collection to give you a few to try. Then you don't have to start slow but don't have to buy a whole bottle of something you might not like. Not exclusive to smoky whisky!
I mooch a shitton of cigars by hanging out in my local shop. I always help the reps set up and take down at events. I also painted and redid the ventilation systems at a new shop the owner bought. if I didn't already have a job that pays better I would be working there
single malts are the only thing I can find where I live so I started with single malts. I've enjoyed 6 different bottles of single malt scotch lately and Talisker is one I've been eyeing up and went in with the 10 year today. I love it and is the most peaty whisky I've had so far. I also get a lot of green olive on the nose which I really like.
I remember the first Talisker 10 I tried. It was a tiny 20cl btotle out of a three pack along with Clynelish 14 (also awesome - even if I was unable to grasp its compexities as a Scotch newbie) and Caol Ila 12 (sense a trend here? Also awesome). Its""smoked meat"-yness and camp fire-yness is what mde me fall in love with smoky Scotch. Since then I've moved on to love things like Laphroaig and Lagavulin, but Talisker 10 remains my "smoky whisky spirit eagle" :)
Seen various reviews of this and I find it interesting how people of different nationalities have their own interpretations of notes due to their own personal influences. Lets you consider things you maybe wouldn't otherwise have noticed. Definitely a divisive one this though. I can't make my mind up about it yet.
I have been on Stranahan's list for four or five years now with no luck. Their website says the list is upwards of 25k but it has said that for a while now. Would not be surprised if it was pushing 100k people.
Found Talisker at a bar in the outskirts of Tokyo near where I live. I was with a girl and turns out Talisker was the closest distillery to where she grew up. I haven't drank whisky before (other than jack and coke), but the Talisker was great and I don't see why it wouldn't make a good starting whisky.
I'd been reading/watching some reviews of Talisker 10 going downhill a bit in recent years. So I finally got around to picking up a bottle yesterday, and I have to say that it's quite nice and smokey, but I don't get as much depth or complexity or background notes like I get in similarly priced scotches such as Lagavulin, Springbank or Bruichladdich. Kind of on the fence with this one fellas. The 3 aforementioned scotches all kinda blew me away when I first tried them... This one, not so much.
Oh man, I love me some Talisker. Never noticed the green apple before so I poured a glass since I have some and totally get it now! So cool. Love that about whiskey! Also get some pear on the nose along with the citrus. Taste always gives me a strong fresh cracked pepper flavor on the back of my tongue which I love! Fantastic whiskey! Congrats on the license for your distillery! Have you decided on a name for the distillery yet? Or one for the actual whiskey you're going to make? If not, may I suggest making a batch and calling it "The Boosh"? That just sounds like a great name for a whiskey to me.
Oh nice! Thanks for that link. I was exploring that blog yesterday and read about the mythical Weiss Whiskey. Sounds amazing! BTW, just found out that you're a musician and fellow twanger. Very cool. I've played for 24 yrs myself. I play a total of 5 instruments currently but guitar is my first love. Does your love of music and guitars delve as deeply as your love for whiskey? Bc I could talk about those 3 things ALL DAY LONG!
You're the man! Maybe one of these days I'll find my way to Austin and we can talk whiskey, music, and guitars. And drink of course... If you're somewhat of a guitar nerd like me, check out FrettedAmericana. Very cool channel. They have access to some of the rarest guitars around and do videos reviewing them. The host, Phil X, is an entertaining character as well.
First whisky I ever tried was Jameson Black Barrel. Then I think I skipped straight to Highland Park 12. It was an awesome introduction to scotch. I'm goons try the Talisker 10 tonight
so question a year late... a friend of mine loves Talisker is it similar to bye him a Caol Ila 12 Year for present?? in order to taste something LITTLE different (not much)
As a beginner, go straight from Glenfiddich Select Cask to Talisker 10, you're gonna have a baad time. Half bottle later and after trying different types of glasses, it's actually quite good. Just need some time and practise with whisky
As a beginner I picked the Talisker as my first single malt (and first smoky whisky as well) based on some online reviews... absolutely loved it.
Had Talisker for the first time tonight. It is now one of my favorites. I can't believe I have waited this long to try it.
same here / preeeeettty good

@Payton Nova Glad I could help :)
Anyone else notice how the Talisker bottles seem to get holes in them? always empty too quickly......
Hahaha I have this problem myself! I got one and just flew off
They really need to fix it. My bottle was completely ruined in like a week
Just bought one two days ago in Ireland, Its half empty, and I have know idea what happened, but I have come across few whiskey's that make me smile.

My first Talisker I was introduced to was Talisker 10 as a gift and holy shit! top 10 single malts I've had / can afford.
It's freaking awesome.
got it as a gift to, drinking it right now

Im so happy you guys love Talisker. It was one of my starting smokey whiskeys and I loved it, though it took me a few tries to decide that I loved it.

I like Talisker 10. Very smooth and inoffensive with nice "sea side" like flavours while being smokey too.
Thank you for drinking Talisker with me. really helps when you point out the different under tones, since im not that experienced.
My wife and I went to the Talisker distillery a few years ago, and it’s absolutely stunning. It’s like physically being in a painting.
One of these days I will go to Islay and tour them all but in addition, there will definitely be a day reserved to head up to Skye and visit Talisker.
Just subscribed after watching intermittently for about 3years. Great advice from both of you on breaking into a new sector
My absolute favourite Whiskey of all time, and a great distillery to visit
Had this a few weeks ago at a Brazilian steak house. Absolutely fantastic!! 🥃😁
Hell yeah. Just got mine Talisker and watching a video to compare the thoughts

I agree, one of the best introductions to the world of smoky whisky. This and the 18yo of course. The peated anCnoc's are another good choice.
Yes! I need to do a video on AnCnoc.
Agreed! I love the anCnoc Rascan; it's like having smoked fruit compote.

My experience of Ardbeg was the same. Felt as though I had made a mistake at first, but not now.
Great advice my dudes!
Idk if this is an England thing but Talisker is everywhere here and was my first whiskey, was introduced to me by my dad, and we love it

I am a beginner but I freaking love this whisky...
Dark Storm is excellent. It is sold in travel retail, in a 1 liter bottle. My sister picked this up for me at Heathrow Airport.
Tell your sister to send us one next time.

I absolutely loved it.. been a peat lover ever since
Acabei de provar!! Whiskey maravilhoso!! Sal, turfa, fuligem, doçura, pimenta, maresia!!! I love it!!!
Lagavulin 16.
I'm in the exact same boat.
Talisker 10 was the first single malt that I loved and came to it via JW Green.
I also painted and redid the ventilation systems at a new shop the owner bought. if I didn't already have a job that pays better I would be working there
Such a good idea. I've always found that the people willing to step up and do shit no one else wants to do end up in the best places.
Both Storm and Dark Storm er awesome! Love most Taliskers
Funny...this actually is the whisky that gooot me into Islays. Not my first peated whisky but definitely the one. Now it's my go to everyday dram.
For the price can't beat the tailsker 10.. ❤❤❤❤
single malts are the only thing I can find where I live so I started with single malts.
You should definitely try the Talisker 57 North, It's my favorit Talisker.
Love this whiskey
I love Talisker I love it so much I have even been to the distillery. I love the Isle of Skye and I love peaty whiskeys, so what is not to enjoy.
My first smoky whisky was Lagavulin 12 and I drank it neat. I love it.
How's this comparing to the Distiller's Edition? I just picked that up and it's VERY nice
Music and whisky are blood brothers. of course. ;-)
Im a hard core Ardbeg fan, but didnt start there, but a great place to start is a Bunnahabhain and a really subtle step from speyside to Islay
First whisky I ever tried was Jameson Black Barrel. Then I think I skipped straight to Highland Park 12. It was an awesome introduction to scotch. I'm goons try the Talisker 10 tonight
so question a year late...
a friend of mine loves Talisker
is it similar to bye him a Caol Ila 12 Year for present??
in order to taste something LITTLE different (not much)
The best hipflask whisky ever made.
thank you..i love talisker 10
As a beginner, go straight from Glenfiddich Select Cask to Talisker 10, you're gonna have a baad time. Half bottle later and after trying different types of glasses, it's actually quite good. Just need some time and practise with whisky
Wait!!!!! After the bottle finished I stop longing for Elektra Elektra, but now Talisker Talisker .....what a whisky
