I worked at a computer store in Illinois. I sold Amiga's and Atari ST's. I remember when Atari purchased some Amiga 2000's from us for Atari Lynx development. Their offices were in Lombard, Illinois. It was a nondescript location. Got to go there to deliver Amiga's and to do service calls.
I had an Atari lynx back in 1991 that I bought with my Holy Confirmation money and the graphics blew me away because I had a Nintendo and it of course was 8 bit🤔 The games I had were Electro Cop, Gauntlet, And Zolar Mercenary. They were awesome and I miss my Lynx
I remember this Atari, chips challenge, Bill and ted were great!!! Batman was frustrating! the second version of the Lynx was the one I used!! I also had a game boy which I really liked a lot, lasted longer on battery :)
I'm a big fan of the Atari Lynx. And it turned out I was able to get one cheaply at the time. I found one at a local Charity Shop here in Australia. Came in a carry case, and with two games. It only cost $5AU. And it still works!
I've had an on again off again relationship with the Lynx. I got my first one in around 1993. I've bought and sold maybe 10 over the years. I just bought another one on eBay. Why?? CALIFORNIA GAMES!! Love it.
I enjoyed my Lynx, my younger brother had the Gamer Gear and My older brother had the Game Boy. So had access to all 3 as a kid growing up. They were all great systems and had their own great games.
A friend of mine was given a pair of Lynxes with link cable in the mid-90's. Fond memories of Todd's Adventures in Slime World, Xenophone, and head-to-head games of BattleWheels. What a time...
I know a guy who used to work on the games for the Lynx. This was also the first true 16 bit handheld ever made, based on his recollection. Pulling out the cards were a pain in the ass though, until they revised the design to have a curve at the end for you to grip onto.
Cool video. I always really liked the Lynx and preferred it to the monochromatic GameBoy. The new LCD upgrade kit that came out for it a couple of years ago is quite remarkable. It is a dramatic improvement over the original. Love the expression on RJ's face in that photo, LOL!
I remember playing California Games on a friend's lynx at school and hating it haha. I still think that the ability to shift the layout from right handed to left handed was an interesting idea (that never caught on really).
My brothers friend got an Atari Lynx when it had just come out and I was surprised at how the graphics looked for the time and the games were fun. New subscriber to your channel, I think your videos are great
I had an OG Lynx, it was really great. Mostly played it while plugged into the wall! At the time I didn't really appreciate how amazing the graphics were, but these days it's obvious. Not only did the graphics chip allow blisteringly fast sprite scaling and rotation, but there was no such thing as a background layer - everything was sprites, so everything could be scaled and rotated as needed and then drawn over the top of whatever else had been drawn in that frame. Shame it didn't get the software support it deserved, but there were some fun games.
If it had the support it may have really taken off like wildfire. The reason why it's initial good sales came to an end was probably because it didn't have much of that. People probably started to realize that they were never going to get any major must have titles and that the number of games released was not going to increase. It just didn't have a large variety of games to choose from. It's a real shame, because it had so much potential. Still, it did end up with a decent amount of good games and is a bit underrated.
I had the Lynx, cool video on this. Takes me back seeing the footage! Batman was so hard it was ridiculous. Slime World was alright and I somehow defeated Pit Fighter - that took some percavearance!
For sure. I think I played my Gameboy more than my SNES back in the day. I have a lot of fond memories of sitting in the back seat of my parents' car playing games during trips.
Man I loved my Lynx. The only real negative with the machine was that it ate batteries like a butterball on his first day home after fat camp. It was pretty hard to convince your Mom to buy you a fresh set of 6 batteries every single day.
A (VERY SPOILT) schoolmate of mine had one of these (first generation) and a load of games. I loved it. It was a beautiful handheld with some great games. The BIG, HUGE, COLOSSAL issue was the battery life, or lack of it. 6AA (iirc) was in the region of between 45minutes and an hour and a half...But what a brilliant way to spend an hour. Id love one now but they are so damn pricey.
I don't know why exactly, but the closing of this video reminded me of Neneh Cherry, and I was half expecting you to start singing "No money man can win my love, it's sweetness that I'm thinking of"
I am a fan of atari and sega those are my only favorite video game companies but i do love all video game companies equally i just wish that atari lynx was successful just like gameboy i think atari lynx is an underrated handheld system even tho i have never heard about it back in the day
First and foremost your charisma is infectious. Nice video and I was a big Lynx fan. My mom got me a Lynx II along with Gates of Zendocon by Epyx and Ninja Gaiden which was pretty faithful to the arcade. I remember going to Toys R Us on 34th Street Harold Sq across from Macys during Christmas to get my shiny new Lynx, dinner at Tad's Steak on 34th and then headed to Macys to see Santa. What a day
Great vid! I follow you on Twitter and don't know how I wasn't subbed until now. I learned a lot and appreciate your sense of humor and style. Man, that Lynx sure had some impressive sprite scaling abilities from what I saw in your vid. Some of those games looked like they could have easily been on a home console of the time. Super impressive. Well done! And subbed 👍
Found out about your channel from Top Hat Gaming Man earlier. Love it! Subscribed and thanks for the great content! I never had a Lynx, but I was one of those few that had a Jaguar. My Alien/Predator fandom was literally the reason I wanted the thing as a kid.
S.T.U.N. Runner was the "killer app" for me and reason enough to own the system back in the day (as was Tempest 2000 for Jaguar) and yet was not even shown in the video :( great coverage nonetheless :) the Lynx model 2 was my jam
Things I learned today: Atari things. Also pockets of denim jackets were big enough to hold items similar in size to a large "marital aid". I don't have any marital aids, just my Handy Game and my Touch Me.
The PC Engine GT was seen as more powerful and called the Rolls Royce of handhelds by games magazines. It cost 3 times as much as the Lynx. It had a far superior screen and much better 2D graphics. Although the Lynx was superior at sprite scaling and 3D.
Found your channel today and had to binge watch all your content. Really like how your covering retro arcade games. Would love to see you do a retrospective of the super scaler arcade titles, they blew me away when I was a kid in the 80s. And obviously I've subbed 😄
I had a second model lynx back then with batman return, blue lightning, toki and shadow of the beast. It really was a great console but it was a real battery killer and therefore made his portability redundant.
I seriously LOVE your intro! It takes me back to the days of watching Punky Brewster and Muppet Babies on an old 100lb color tv in the late 80's! I subscribed and joined the notification squad.
turbro express is the pinnacle of handhelds for decades. An actual 'home console' in your hand did not happen again for decades took about 25 years for the Nintendo switch to come out after turbo express - nomad.... so sad the nomad did not come out 3 years earlier if it had we would have had a switch like system WAY WAY SOONER the genesis was DONE by the time the nomads inception. IF it came out when megadrive/genesis was hot we would be way farther alone in portable systems I think the xbox and sony both would have fully portible switch like consoles both PS3 and 360 would have had portable version. ALOT of us realized how epic that was people who had those 2 rare system understood it was only matter time something like switch would smash market if done right.
I have atari lynx 1&2, 10x Gameboys,8x Gameboy Colors,2x Gameboy Advance SPs,Nintendo DS Lite, Nintendo 3ds,10x PSP's, 3x SMS 2, 2x SMD 2, 2x GameCubes,4x N64s,7x Wii's,3x Original Xbox, 5x Xbox360's, 2x Snes's,PS2 slim. I may have missed out a few.
I always wanted one as a kid but alas it wasn't to be. I could have remedied that as an adult and picked up some of the new old stock that gamestation cleared out back in '03 for about 40 quid and a few diff games for about a tenner each, but never did for some reason. I wish I had now!. And on a slight tangent, your hair is looking great :D.
As far as sitting in one's hands, the Lynx I is vastly superior to literally all consoles until the Nintendo Switch. This machine to me, is a mini Amiga, but with more advanced hardware features.

This video and your Game Gear video still stand up as my favorites. I would love to see an Atari Jaguar video by you and tophat gaming man could do together. a husband and wife video!
I bought Gates of Zendocon. It is very poor. You could not have seen many Lynx games for this to be your favourite. I would have given you my cartridge for free had I known you would have liked it!

And your head is in her.
Probably cause you're a walking cringe-fest.
I have the same...

Great video the Lynx was an absolute beast when it came out featuring graphical effects even home consoles of the time couldn’t pull off.
I had a friend who had a lynx. It was good fun, I had a GameGear then a Gameboy later on.
I remember playing California Games on a friend's lynx at school and hating it haha. I still think that the ability to shift the layout from right handed to left handed was an interesting idea (that never caught on really).
Oh, that's why there was another set of buttons? I was thinking it was like the Wonderswan for some reason.
My brothers friend got an Atari Lynx when it had just come out and I was surprised at how the graphics looked for the time and the games were fun. New subscriber to your channel, I think your videos are great
This is one of the coolest channels out there! Love the Lynx love!
I had a friend in junior high who owned one of these. I remember being quite impressed. A shame it didn't do better.
Great vid....I still have a Lynx with a up graded Lcd screen...and a lot of games...glad I kept it ...

Crazy, I just started getting back into the Lynx last week and all of a sudden your video pops up on my UA-cam feed. Great video!
I had the Lynx, cool video on this. Takes me back seeing the footage! Batman was so hard it was ridiculous. Slime World was alright and I somehow defeated Pit Fighter - that took some percavearance!
I may have seen this in stores back in the day. Looks pretty awesome for its time
Always gutted I didn't get to own a lynx as a kid! On my car boot hit list now as an adult. Great to see you back :)
California Games on the Lynx had four activities: surfing, BMX, hackey-sack, and skateboarding. No flying disc or roller skating.
Handhelds have always had a special place in my heart. The mystique of having an arcade in your pocket was a big deal for the typical 80's kid.
For sure. I think I played my Gameboy more than my SNES back in the day. I have a lot of fond memories of sitting in the back seat of my parents' car playing games during trips.

There was always the one rich kid in school that had one of these, we all wanted it.
Love your videos! Very pleased you're back!

Love my Lynx 1 and Lynx 2 with the McWill screen..
Cool video, and sweet game footage. It's crazy that a handheld system in 1989 was doing sprite scaling.
Thank you! Glad you like the footage, check out Laird's Lair as that's where the gaming footage if from xxx
You make the best researched videos on some of the most rarest hardware... amazing stuff 👏👌

It’s a beautiful (in a fugly way) console isn’t it? This was the sh*t back in the day. I always wanted one.
The Lynx 2 looked MUCH better.
@Anonymous Yup.

I'd love a Atari cosmos release in some form hopefully soon I'd buy multiple of them one for me and my dad
I still think the Lynx II was the sexiest portable console ever, including the steam deck I have pre-ordered.
I had a lynx 1 and when I got the lynx 2 I remember not liking the lighter sound. Not as loud
Just found this channel! Can't believe I missed it.
Love the John Bartlett photo, "a succulent Chinese meal!"

Awesome review! I subbed in the first 5 mins. Look forward to watching your channel
Uhhhhhh……you say it took until the nomad for a portable system to come along more powerful…..you might have forgot the NEC Turbo Express from 1990.
It was actually my first gaming handheld/console, but I returned it the same day because of battery leakage. So I got a NES Mario/Duckhunt set instead.
But the 3D and 2d scaling is quite impressive.

Yet another great video LD. Didn't know all that much about the Lynx, but now I do ^^
Thanks for the video
Thank you for watching!
Touch me and give me a handy? :P Should have been an Atari commercial...
On a more serious note, I loved my Lynx, but always wanted a TurboExpress / PC Engine GT. I now finally have that (in Analogue Pocket form)
Nice on the Pinball Dreams/Fantasies music in the background ;)
Great review as usual Lady Decade. My childhood years, I never had a chance to get my hand most of the famous handhelds...but I used to had 'Tiger Games' on my hand . Especially the 'Tiger Wrist Game' . Try play Batman & Robin Tiger games.
