Another great video, I have so many great stories and memories about the Saturn. The 2D fighters that required the RAM Cart, shooters, and crazy Japanese imports are go-to games to this day. I remember a buddy calling me that May it was released here in the states to tell me the Saturn was available. I was shocked, and rushed to the store to pick it up. Great times.---Gunstar Gamer

Great video! I love the Saturn, picked one up here in the uk day one for a hefty £399.99, but to be fair I still have it set up, modded to play imports, and probably play it more than any other machine right now so I guess you could say it wasn't money too badly spent all these years later! When people used to be down on the Saturn I wasn't too fussed as I was having loads of fun with it! Anyway, another enjoyable video, Merry Christmas!

Sega should have brought more games from Japan in the west.
So many true gems left behind that would have made the saturn more appealing on our continent imo.
Still. saturn is one of my favorite console to collect for.
But I have to disagree with you about Daytona USA.
This game was a mess with poor frame rate, clipping textures, horrible draw distance ... and was a reason that many people thought playstation was a better harware after seeing ridge racer running on it. Sega rally on the other hand was a much better conversation imo.

You blame SEGA of Japan but I don't believe it's accurate. SEGA of Japan did not want to work on the 32X (which, IMHO, was the biggest mistake ever) and it actually got SEGA in trouble has they did not have enough chips to share between the manufacturing process of 32X and Saturn at the same time. 32X was SEGA of America decision. I think that the 32X created a big marketing problem that added to the lack of libraries for 3rd party developers create games faster. Great video overall!

I'm not a Sega fan, just like games overall. The fact is that Sega of Japan first asked for a Jaguar killer (which started 32x idea so maybe you're right). Another fact is that Japan had to trust Sega of America in decision making for the 16 bit continuity as that market was a lot bigger in the US for Sega (so maybe you're wrong). But they're two different houses even if you think they aren't. They basically HAD to trust Sega of America on the 32X but keep their plans thinking on Japanese market.
The development of 32x was all done in America with some help from Japan (this being the usage of the chips created by Japan). Here, have a read around 7th paragraph (or the whole thing). For me Japan was to blame when deciding Saturn was a 2D console instead of creating an easy 3D development environment. www.nintendolife.com/news/2018/04/hardware_classics_unpacking_the_32x_segas_most_catastrophic_console_failure

    • @maroon9273
      @maroon9273 3 роки тому

Sega Japan wanted 32x upgraded genesis console instead of a add-on at first and when soa told them a add-on will be much better for current genesis customers. They agreed to release the 32x add-on as cheap entry to the 32-bit era. Once the 32x failed in the west they cancelled it and started to put all their resources on the sega saturn. With the pressure on competing with the ps1 they pulled a suprise launch while ps1 price in NA was 300 usd by itself. While the Saturn gave you a better deal with game, memory and maybe a second controller at 400 usd. They should have kept there orginal launch date. Even better they should let yu suzuki design the hardware (cut down hardware of the model 2 or 3 hardware) or reach out to pc graphics chips from Yamaha, nvidia, s3, ati, and power vr.

I remember being laughed at in college when I said I had a Saturn, everyone jumped on the PlayStation hype train, but I thought their release titles were utter garbage compared to Sega's, even without a Sonic game.
While they were playing Crash Bandicoot, I was playing Fighters Megamix - my first game.
When Panzer Dragoon Saga was released nobody had heard of it, but look how much it's going for now on ebay. I still have my original copy and can sit back and have the last laugh at those who tried to mock me in college. While they scramble bidding £300 for a copy, my original sits nicely on my collection shelf with my other 50 classic games.
Sega may have made a hash of the release, but I got my Saturn converted to region free when it started to bomb in Europe and it extended its life. I can honestly say it was probably the best gaming period I ever enjoyed with a console.
    Good vid.

I love the Saturn. I had a PlayStation during the 5th gen, but I got a 2nd hand Saturn in Japan in 2006 for a very low price. I picked up Panzer Dragoon and Fighters Megamix for ¥100 each. While I still think the original PlayStation was awesome, I can easily make the argument that the Saturn was better than the N64.

Growing up during the PS1/N64 era, The Sega Saturn was considered old news the very moment it was released. However in retrospect it was a 2D powerhouse with a handful of stellar 3D games to boot. I feel if Sega had not released the SEGA CD and 32X and just released the Saturn with a backwards compatibility for mega drive games, it probably would’ve done better. Also had it had the Japanese library of Saturn games, it may have done even better. There were tons of great 2.5D games and RPGs for it.

Or a backward compatible adapter for EU and NA would have been a 2nd option if the cost was too high to out it the hardware. Even the sega cd could have been replace with cd media for pc/dos games back then with added cd soundtracks, more storage for genesis/pc/dos games.

Another top video. I can still remember how bitter I felt after the whole 32X disaster. Had it not been for that add on I would have jumped on the Saturn following my love of the Megadrive.
I think nowadays the Saturn is way more popular as 2D graphics have aged really well in comparison to the 3d games of that time. Despite me also opting for PlayStation I still found myself soaking up as much 2D offerings as I could as despite 3D being the PlayStation's forte I mostly struggled getting into 3D gaming at that time. It wouldn't be until the PS2 that I would properly embrace the third dimention but for me 2D games were always where it was at.

I’ll admit I didn’t appreciate the Saturn until I was exposed to its Japanese library. When I was a teenager in Arizona, I lived a mile away from a store that specialized in selling imports (that store closed in May 2021) and I sampled some Japanese Saturn games such as Dragon Ball Z Legends (being a big DBZ fan) and thought it was awesome. On the last day of school in 1997, my parents got a Saturn from my brothers and I for $50 new which came with VF2, Virtua Cop, and Daytona USA. And on Christmas that year, we got the best game ever for that console, X-Men Vs. Street Fighter.

  • @HajimeNoJMo

I find it funny that Saturn beat the N64 in Japan. PS1 in Japan didn’t 100% take off until FFVII take out. Lots of American Saturn fans tend to exclusively blame Bernie Stolar why the Saturn failed (over his “Saturn isn’t our future” comment), but he inherited a big mess. Sega’s US, Japan, and European branches couldn’t work together. Apparently, Peter Moore told Yuji Naka or some other Sega of Japan officials to go fuck themselves because they couldn’t understand the international market. During the Genesis, they were doing good but weren’t making any big profits because they were selling the Genesis at cost (maybe even less). Think of Starbucks actually selling their coffee at cost (which is about $0.03) and that’s what Sega was doing with the Genesis and Dreamcast in North America.

10:54 You're saying that the Saturn port of Daytona USA made up for the Saturn port of Sega Rally?
    That's... exactly backwards.
Daytona USA (awesome arcade game) was a Saturn launch game in the U.S. and Europe.
Sega Rally (also an awesome arcade game) was ported over half a year later and is considered the much better port.

4:14 But there was a distinct lack of 3rd party support. From MEGA August 1994 "Among the new generation machines, the Saturn and the Sony PlayStation are the favouritres. Sony and Sega openly began a "third parties" competition. Each month they both announce the number of third party developers who have signed up to develop for them. The winner of the competition will be the company that has the largest number of developers. The latest score is:
    PlayStation - 164 third parties (10 May)
    Saturn - 178 third parties (2 June)
The Sony PlayStation. An amazing machine, but currently lagging behind in the race to sign up developers. The current leader? Saturn of course!"

I also wasn’t personally into fighting games & there were little to no 3D platformers. No Sonic was criminal! The controller was also designed for 2D games.
It just wasn’t as good as the MS, Genesis or Dreamcast.

The thing with Saturn is that it didn't make the gamers feel they were playing a next gen console. While PSX and N64 users were happy playing Mario 64, Crash Bandicoot and other classics, Sega fans had to be content with poor 3D games like Daytona USA with 3 tracks only. Also N64 and PS1 gamers were bigger and had more replay factor, while Sega insisted on arcade boring 5-minutes games. Saturn has a huge library of games, many of them are very good, but I don't see any classic like Mario 64, Metal Gear Solid, Ocarina Of Time, Final Fantasy VII, etc. Dreamcast came to erase these mistakes, but it was too late.

Im sure the judo master commercials are confusing to the non Japanese so here’s a brief explanation:
The tag line is “Sega Satan Shiro!” which could be translated as “Do Sega Saturn” or “Play Sega Saturn”. Shiro is also a homonym for “white” which is why they show a white Sega Saturn. Now the pun is, there’s a fictional character named Sugata Sanshiro, an early Kurosawa film, about a judo master. The first phonetic character is turn into Se instead of Su, and the third and fourth characters switched which turns it into the phrase “Segasatanshiro” and rephrased into the tag line “Sega Satan Shiro”. So the white Saturn and the Judo character are both puns made from an anagram of the name Sugata Sanshiro.
    Hope that clears things up.

I mean, sure, the console didn't have that many Sonic the Hedgehog games, but it had tons of fighting games from Capcom, Sega, SNK, the Mortal Kombat series, Dead or Alive 1 and some other Saturn games that I never heard of. And the superior RAM cartridge that the Saturn had was the Action Replay Plus cartridge, which was a 3-things-in-1 device, meaning that it would allow you perform cheats in your Saturn games, save your Saturn's game data and break the region encoding allowing you play imported games on any Sega Saturn model of your choice, which was awesome and the Saturn was also backwards-compatible with music CDs as well.

Okay, this blistering hatred of early 3d by 2d fans needs to stop. 3d wasn't just impressive because people were graphics whores. It created a level of realism that put 2d efforts to shame. Suddenly Link wasn't just stuck in a corridor swinging at the knight before him. Now he could roll, block, parry, and jump in ways that approximated real life, Interactivity improved and people started making entire worlds. Worlds that are still eye-catching and appealing. At least people still make 2d games. When's the last time Disney did traditional animation? Another major reason the Saturn failed was not being able to push polygons as well in a future that depended on them. Not wanting change repeatedly messed with both Nintendo and Sega.

It's funny and sad when you take a look at gaming history. Nintendo asked Atari for help in releasing their 8bit system (NES) in America. Atari eventually walked away from the deal and Nintendo dominated the 8Bit video game market. Sony asked Nintendo (and Sega) for help with releasing it's CD based game system. Both declined. Sony released what we now know as "PlayStation" and destroyed both Nintendo and Sega (sales wise) in the process. Nintendo has been able to hang on because of the popularity of their handhelds. Sega moved to a games only based company to survive. I am a HUGE Sega fan but it's shocking to me to learn just how many BAD business decisions video game companies (especially SEGA) have made.

If the Japanese doesn’t bother you than the saturn is one of the best console for rpg.
So many great and unknown games on that machine. 1057 games... don’t forget it was the most selling Sega console in Japan and was even better than the n64 in Japan!
Great channel by the way 😉

I feel like Sega consoles 'uniqueness' in its hardware designs always makes up for being the platforms of choice for niche genres of gamers somehow. Saturn is regarded as the staple for shooters and 2D fighters, only to be topped by Dreamcast wich holds up as a fighting game powerhouse even to this day.
Btw, very impressive that you actually own a physical copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga. This one is sure worth the bucks these days.

Dreamcast community need a video documentary about the Great great advances our console had last years, hdd/sd support, operating systems, Dreamshell/Retrodream, arcade ports, homebrew games, etc. This year is the year of English/Spanish translation of Japanese games! Thank you for making this, your work is great and it's good to have a woman in the world who love videogames. When i was child always had the hope my single mom would play with me a little. I could never understand why girls were not interested in videogames being done girls games, now i try to introduce my 2 daughters to gaming and they are happy playing little times with dad, they love Dreamcast!!! And I always loved SEGA, the greatest videogame company? Greetings from Argentina

Nintendo bailed on Sony because Sony tried to swipe software royalty fees from underneath Nintendo's nose with the contract signed for the SNES sound chip.
I'm not sure if collaborating with Sony would have necessarily worked in Sega's favor either.
ETA: Very few copies of PD Saga were printed, since the Saturn was approaching the end of its life.

Kinda funny how you said "Zwei", the german word for two, as a german, it naturally sounds funny. Usually you speak the Z hardened instead of an S. You could say 'TSwei' but I guess that's hard. German seems a very hard language for english speakers - like a TH is hard for me personally, I always seem to say kinda an F.

As a 46 year old collector, I've seen, played or collected it all almost. Lots of opinions on the Saturn, especially with younger gamers who weren't there back in the day. To address the widely believed rumour that the Saturn wasn't made for 3d is absolute false. Sega had plenty of 3d developing experience by 95'. Virtual Fighter, Virtual Racing and Daytona had hit the arcades well before the Saturn launched. What the problem with the Saturns 3d capabilities was unlocking it. Sega had experience to do 3d on the Saturn immediately, 3rd party developers took longer to do so. I mean Panzer Dragoon and a premature Daytona launched with the Saturn, both inhouse made. So the 3d potential was always there, just that it wasnt out of the box like the Playstations ability. I get sick of hearing that it was a 2d machine that Sega threw in extra processes at the last moment. Not totally true. Sega knew it was going the 3d route well before hand. After all they were 3d pioneers. The megadrive/genesis was pushing polygons in 90' so I think Sega knew where the future was heading.Sega did throw an addition graphics processor in late wich complicated game development. More so for those companies that weren't aware of the addition till later. By the time other companies began to unlock the 3d on the Saturn, it was almost too late. The Saturn is more powerful on paper than the ps1 but difficult to develop for. The Saturn probably my favorite retro console.I have recently tapped it true potential. I have upscaled it video quality, bought a video card for it and unlocked its regions with the famous action plus key/memory cartridge. The problem with the Saturn was Sega. Not the Saturn so Much. Sega wasnt third party savy at the time, over confident in thier name.by releasing early unannounced and not helping developers initially helped push many away. On top of that dropping primary franchises was absolutely foolish. There was no real next sonic, golden axe, etc that made the genesis/mg popular. Finally when stolar announced the Saturn wasn't Segas future in 97' , Sega had pretty much screwed the Saturn yet once again, this time fatally. Developers pretty much abandoned it soon after that. Only a few third party's finished up what was in the pipeworks after the stolar announcement. What was the point afterwards? The gaming scene was so much different back then.tons of innovation with emerging technology. It was an age of many new frontiers from 89' to 99'. Probably the most exciting time I have ever experienced in gaming history.
