  • The Atari Lynx was an awesome handheld with, dare I say, the BEST collection of arcade ports from 1989-1995. It really is an underrated system and in this video, I play and review EVERY commercially released game for it! (Homebrews and later releases in a later video.)

I can't stand playing Lynx games in modern times on anything but a small screen. The best way to play them today is a small handheld with a GBA aspect ratio, just something dedicated to Lynx and GBA since they are the two that look really bad when enlarged. Lynx scaling was limited , if you wanted full scaling you had to write your own routines.

For what i,ve readed, the lynx does have builtin flatshade polygonal features but being very slow, but still it was very forward thinking for it’s time, also while it’s cpu is only 8bit but since it’s cpu runs at 4mhz,it runs more then twice as fast as the nes cpu and games such as lemmings, steel talons, hard driving and shadow of the beast etc,,, really do show what the lynx is capable off compared to those 16bit home consoles,
It simply is an amezing machine with lots and lots of untapped potential😁

I think I remember paying some $180 for at the time, which was a lot of money for a poor college student with a small Army salary. I'll have to bust it out as I cannot recall all the games I've had for it. I'll have to go look to see how difficult it would be to get more of these games for it as there are some on here that I recall seeing back in the day, but never having actually gotten. I may have to explore the homebrew scene as well.

    Background info on Double Dragon:
Knight Technologies Tom Schenck chatted to me and said:
"The Double Dragon game was the third product I worked on for Knight Technologies (the developer of the product, published by Telegames). It was the first where we had put together a complete Lynx game engine to work with for products, and I only worked on the game directly in the beginning months - it was finished by another programmer Alex, along with a few other products. I went on to start with some of the other titles you mention below.
It was based on the arcade and Genesis versions of the game, and developed without access to the original source code (but we did have the Genesis sprite source art). We wanted to showcase the Lynx graphics and used pretty big sprites - perhaps a little bigger than needed, but it worked pretty well. It was certainly better written and put together than my first project.
I think it only really suffered from some controller/input issues based on how the input was read in - with what I know now (about two decades more experience), I would have run an input system at a very high rate to make sure to capture button presses properly for attack/defend, but that meant you had to be a little lazy on your button pressing.
I would say that it was a reasonably good port from a couple of somewhat junior developers on a quirky platform."

Your right about Kung Food, it could of been better.
Steve Mitchell talked with myself some years ago about Lynx Kung Food being a fun title, based on an Atari design, but one which they had developed a 4-player version of..
This feature being dropped due to testing and debugging on this aspect delaying release and it had become apparent consumers were not making significant use of multi-player functions in Lynx titles.
A possible factor for this was the amount of cables needed and power adaptors for long term gaming.

lynx was an excellent console at its time it wasn't the most expensive but it was probably the most powerful and versatile...(yes, I know that the pc engine gt also existed but that doesn't count)....it had a library of games not as big as that of nintendo and sega...and it didn't have many great titles intended as the most popular and popular titles...despite this, as you have shown extensively, your library was still rich in more than valid games, some were just rare pearls capable of putting even sega and nintendo to shame...unfortunately in that same period atari had the very bad idea of designing and trying to sell that damned fake 64-bit jaguar...I wonder if atari maybe had recovered aiming to more on lynx and any future successors at least at the moment being that the company was already in a black crisis .... rather than focusing on home consoles that needed a much greater investment .... who knows maybe seeing the good results anyway collected by lynx they could have got back on track and after a couple of years of developing portable consoles they could have also gained the success they deserved to be able to bring back atari greande .... too bad .... I still hope to see before or then the return of atari somehow

An interesting list; it's one of my all time fave consoles. Best game Crystal Mines 2. I spent hours and hours thinking, "Just one more go!". Made a list of all the pass codes to each level; discovering all the hidden secrets and bonus levels. I rate Batman higher, even though I can find platform games difficult. I like puzzle games and place Ishido higher. The feeling you get for placing all the stones is great.

The decision to build the environment out of sprite rings, thereby utilising the hardwares abilities and capturing the essence of the arcade (the sense of speed), where as the home computer versions tried to replicate the polygon 3D of the Arcade Game, featured sloth-like speeds, was a very wise one.

Yeah, I'd like to see more Lynx reviews, particularly the homebrews. Zaku was a game I really wanted to like, but compared to its obvious inspiration Air Zonk, it just doesn't measure up. It's got that annoying Euro-shmup design where popcorn enemies take a billion shots to kill.

    Mutant food indeed.
My brother also had Scrapyard (Junkyard?) Dog and the Batman Returns game. Batman Returns was the most rage quit inducing game ever. At least until i played Cannon Fodder on thr PC. But Cannon Fodder at least had the excuse of being fun.
The only thing Batman had going for it was we had to squeeze $40 worth of blood value out of that dry stone.

A very entertaining video! For me "Steel Talons" is a AAA+++ game. Although it's not as good as the arcade machine, the controls and jerky graphics make it a different game. But it's a kind of "Gunship 2000" on the go. I really enjoyed playing Gunship 2000 on the Amiga back in the day, and Steel Talons was able to make that type of game possible on a handheld console. I still enjoy playing it today. I always use the cockpit view, which makes the game even better than it seems in the third person view in the videos. “Xybots” is also one of those brilliant arcade ports, which is why I bought the Lynx back then. But there were so many great games that I was completely sold on the Lynx. Unfortunately the Lynx was a flop. But that's why I was able to buy a lot of games (26) for little money back then because the prices for the games were quickly reduced back then.

This was the portable system that I chose to invest in soon after its initial release. It was neat at first but I ended up with mixed feeling about it within a few months. Liked Gates of Zendocon, Chips Challenge, and Xenophobe the most. Other games like Electrocop looked cool in magazine screenshots but didn't execute all that well in practice. Blue Lightning and Warbirds were impressive as portable games but they didn't hold my interest from the standpoint of game design. Finally Rygar was my first experience with the arcade version in any form and as somebody who long cherished the NES adventure it was very underwhelming as a Lynx game and just okay. Never paid attention to the Lynx version of Ms. Pac Man until this video but it looks, eh, like maybe they could have done that one better.

I think that looking at these games stretched to full screen makes them look awful. You could have zoomed out to about 50% of the screen and added a Lynx bezel, otherwise it's like I'm playing with the Lynx a few inches away from my face... Anyway, most games look and play great for such a "weak" system.
